Yup, hell (pun intended) look at the Charger and Challenger. Those platforms have been around for over 10 years yet the sales are consistent. I may not like Mopar cars as much, but Dodge listens to their enthusiasts.
Of all the factory car upgrades I've seen, those dual JBL 12" subwoofers are hands down the most impressive. I'm surprised Doug glossed over this feature as I don't know that it's ever been offered before as a factory option. Car manufacturers need to do more of this. Cars NEED to have awesome sound systems.
You would think that, but unfortunately the "premium" audio system in the Supra is barely passable. My last mazda 3 honestly had a better sound system than this car and I've had to do a lot off sub box modifications just to get is to sound decent. Suprisingly tinny and quiet bass out of two 12" "woofers". Luckily the exhaust sounds nice so I don't miss the audio system too much.
My friend has that option in his Supra and the sound system sucks hard due to the small cabin space. You could put whatever speakers inside, and it will sound bad in that car.
@@HansolControl Just sold my 21 supra and can confirm the factory stereo is just ok. Those subs actually rattle alot and I had to add dampening to make it bearable
Considering the world in general is changing to automatic cars only it was logical to go only AT. Seems they were wrong to go with simple logic and forgot that enthusiasts actually want a MT for their sports car even if it is slower nowadays. This car will forever be out of my budget, if you can even get it in finland to begin with. You can't even get the 380bhp supra here because of emission standards. They're also ridiculously priced here, I think we can get a 320bhp or something 6 cylinder and it starts at like 75k€, wouldn't be surprised if we get the MT it's gonna be a 90-100k car.
@@mayuravirus6134 Guess that will come in time too. I feel like I'm not wrong in assuming when toyota makes a sports car they aim at domestic, US and European markets. Not sure if people still buy manuals in Japan but I assume most new cars there are also some sort of automatic. But we should be really happy that they listened to the potential customers and made MT a real thing.
Regardless of toyota's intention of making a manual model of this, I really like the fact that they make small but important changes to it instead of just slapping a manual in and call it a day like the position of the stick being further back and the slope of the panel trim, its just little details like these that makes a difference.
I highly doubt it that they made the manual version because of "customer demand". It was already in demand since the beginning and probably even before it. I am pretty sure they did it because of Nissan's new manual Z and that's actually really good and a healthy competition to push each other again to the limit just like the old days. Hopefully, other legendary JDM manufacturers join in the competition like Mitsubishi.
You and i both damn well know its not from customer demand, it was the manual Z that was offered and they knew their fan boys would prob jump ship to Z just for the manual ..
The Z will enjoy more sales because its a recognisable and loved model especially in America since the 240Z. It’s also a lot better looking and you’re getting a Nissan not a bmw.
European auto group manual swapped the new supra within a few months of its release. They used various pieces from different bmws to make it work. They did a pretty good job with making it work. A manual parking brake handle would be nice too...
Ever since the Supra first came out, I was really skeptical about it being Automatic only, but now that the Supra has a manual, I am really happy that they listened! Thank you BMW and Toyota!
Choice is Always a great thing! they couldnt loose by adding the manual option to the 4 cyl version.. he said sales are not as good as the 6, so adding the manual to IT would only up those sales and be a win /win for toyota
I mean, do you really think they would invest even more just with people complaining. More than likely this always been in the clause when they paid BMW for this car, and been cheaper just to see how people, or other car manufactures respond, and if the response was warranted, could contract with BMW to pop one in when is time for a refresher, rather having to go into a second contract because Billy, Dewayne, and Sue cried enough they wanted a stick. They probably really did it because Nissan came to the table hard, not bvllshiting with a nice design, OPTIONS, and a strong marketing campaign that had even grandmas talking, even at times when Nissan grave was being surveyed.
This is now the most desirable sports car south of about $100K. Just needs the BMW s58 now and it will be the best BMW. C8 has no manual so is a fail/garbage.
One thing I would really hope they add is RPM to the Heads up Display, as well as Oil/Water/Boost information to the Instrument panel without having to go through a secret menu.

When Nissan announced the new Z with a manual as standard, Toyota didn't want to lose face. If it was about "customer demand", a manual Supra should have been in the works from the very start.
Exactly. It should have been a choice from the start. Now, this can interpeted to be a subtle mind trick to buy more manuals from the manufacturers by making an obvious time and feature difference, because manuals are still dying, but we'll never know for sure. I mean okay, this is a wild guess, but it would be so nice to be true, right?

A eco tuning champ such the supra and the Z isn't that kind of car. The majority of the new car marked has shifted towards automatics so does the budget champs too. This is the point in history where the automatic become the normal and the manuals are the luxury. U can see this trend grow when a new car gets released. The new Z has a good amount of power, but is still essentially based on the previous Z platform which is almost 20 years old now. The modern BMW chassis with the S58 straight six powertrain will likely run circles around the Z.
@@Forzamon42069 Engine is new in the new Z, but it is essentially still on the FM platform/chassis, which is hella old. It's a good platform, and back in 2002 arguably one of the best RWD platforms out there, right up there with BMW even, but in 2022 it is showing its age for sure. Nissan is too broke to develop a brand new RWD platform, and probably wise not to do so now that EVs are the future, and I guess a new Z on a modified old platform is better than no Z at all.

The “fake vents” are to preserve the body if someone wanted to add in actual ducting to their Supra. It’s a smart move because if it’s limited then I would rather have the option to not cut up the body and being able to still add ducting without the permanent damage.
Most of the "vents" don't really help with making real vents at all tho. They just lead right into nothing, and would require a lot of modifying/cutting to "open up" (and workarounds to not destroy important parts of the car).

As a multi-decade driver of manual transmissions (by choice) and as a fan of Toyota's unsurpassed level of quality and reliability in their engineering, I lost the majority of my enthusiasm for this car when Doug mentioned that the transmission and many components of the car were initially designed by BMW, not Toyota. When I buy a Toyota, I want Toyota engineers and their top-notch quality system to have designed the mechanical components. Full stop.
I keep saying it but I really don’t get the hate with this being BMW derived. BMW makes great sports cars and allows this car to have a really nice interior as well. I understand it’s not a pure bred Toyota but for me it’s not a big deal

I love how the argument is made that, it makes sense that Toyota would possibly charge extra because a manual wasn't in the cards for the supra, and they only did it because of the demand. The true statement is that Toyota saw that they could get more sales by making a manual version and so, they did, because the demand for it was great enough and that not including a manual was a severe oversight on their part with regards to the options on releasing the MKV Supra. They are not doing people a favor by including a manual, first and foremost, if Toyota didn't think that they would make money off the Supra name, they wouldn't have decided to develop a new one to begin with, so I would really appreciate it if people stopped making it seem as if manufacturers do consumers a favor by doing certain things, because they're not. I am a huge fan of Toyota, but companies don't sit at the table and be like "I wonder what favor we can do for our customers today" It would always be "I wonder what we can do, to appeal to more people so that we maximize our profits" And that is what happened here, nothing else.
Them doing it because of the demand is the exact same thing as them doing it because they can sell more. Did you think about your comment before writing it?
Wouldn’t the flashing light when the car is technically on neutral, be better as an indicator of when to shift? Like how Dodge does it on their steering wheel? I think that would be better if it doesn’t already have it
I know the new automatics and DCT with their 7 to 10 speeds are faster but maybe I'm old school or a true car guy that just loves being able to actually grab a shifter and select the gears myself. I remember when I was a kid always checking cool or interesting cars to see if they were a manual or auto and when it was an automatic I would always feel disappointed.
I feel the same way. The auto may be faster but sports cars are about the total experience and engagement with the driver. Flappy paddles aren't the same as physically rowing gears and controlling the connection between the engine, the transmission, and the road.
we've established that EVs are already quicker than ICE straight line even with an automatic for ages the remaining ICE sports cars should prioritize fun over numbers, and the manual is a good step in achieving that

What? 🤣🤣🤣😂😂 this thing is a laughing stock in the UK. Its a junk BMW it gets smashed by near 20yr old S2000 and RX8 on track and the biblically unreliable B58 lump you need to sign a waver disclaimer before they will even remap it to an "economy" stage 1 remap🤣 This car is known in the UK as one of the biggest flops of all time.
THERE IS A MANUAL?!
it’s about time gosh finally
Very good looking and very capable Supra 😎👍adding manual transmission will add 5% more buyers to join Supra family. As an ex-owner of the 1985 5 sp manual transmission Supra, I drove that beauty for 23 years of single life and was happy with every mile of the 295K miles. Traded in for a minivan because of the kids 😂
Hey Doug, I look forward to your first drive review. You mistakenly stated that the strut tower bars are unique to the A91MT. I have a 2022 3.0 and I have the strut tower bars. I believe all Supras from 2021+ have the strut tower bars. Only the 2020s with the 2 port 3.0 do not have them.
I've been really excited waiting for the New Z to come out mainly because of the manual. This is giving me options...
Probable reason for the Supra manual. Executive personnel watching the new Nissan Z commercial. All eyes get wide. All mouths open. One brave individual utters it......"Oh crap".
I am glad they brought that new Stratosphere Blue color on board 12:35. I've been waiting for a new blue color to buy my Supra. Probably pissed off all those people who have the special edition blue that came out year before last as this blue color does look very similar. Looking forward to seeing the driving reviews of this new manual.
Thank you Nissan for making Toyota get their act right. I was already looking at a Supra and the manual just made it that much better. Doesn’t hurt that it outperforms the Z too 😎
Nissan didn't make Toyota do shit. We've been asking for a manual since long before the Z was even an idea.

Even tho Nissan nickname started as the Japanize BMW, its fair competitor never been targeted towards BMW. They understood their lane, and most BMWs aren't in their lane, so trying to out perform them never was an aim. This Supra is a BMW point blank. It doesn't really look like a Toyota, and sure as hell don't drive as one, or have Toyota spirit. Even if it does out perform the Z, it will never get that respect, or clot for it, on the streets, or track. Its an impostor that does not deserve any challenges, when it obvious a Supra owner is trying to present one at the red light. Not worth the waste of gas, or getting pulled over by cops over a past battle decades ago, knowing the Z never left the scene with time gaps, and when the other party finally come back decades later, its a fake, with the battle already won, no challenge needed. Come correct, or retire your legend status with dignity.
True 🤡
I thought after the Supra has been out a while that its design will warm up to me. Sadly it hasn't. And like Doug, I'm not a fan of the fake vents. The new Nissan Z runs rings around the Supra in looks IMO.
Supra eat z all day.
@@tomjohnson8737 And that's probably why the Supra looks bloated.
@@fatmanoverlanding 🤣
So youre saying you'd buy the z over the supra (which let's be honest you wont be buying either) solely because of the looks? Suit yourself but when I buy a car I look for reliability and build quality so I don't waste thousands fixing it every year I own it
@@fabbricatopersonareale I know all about Toyota reliability and quality. I currently own two. And one them is a '96 Toyota Land Cruiser (80 Series) - my overlanding rig. But don't forget this Supra is electronically and mechanically a BMW built by Magna Steyr in Austria. Not a Toyota built in Japan. FYI... my daily driver is a BMW X5 (F15), and sadly I've had more niggling issues (too many to list) with it than all the other 5 vehicles I currently own combined. I'd sell it in an instant if I didn't lose a lot of money doing so. So yeah, between this Supra and the Z, I'd get the Z. Full disclosure: I also currently own a '71 Datsun 240Z (S30), and a '83 Toyota Supra (MA60). You decide if there is any bias on my part.
Doug, I would love to see a review on the Rush SR. It’s a 1000cc Suzuki powered track car that weights only 980 pounds. Makes an Elise look big!
Agree with Doug, hate fake vents, fake exhaust pipes/tips, fake exhaust sound, etc. But still really excited about the car…
Manual transmissions are like vinyl records. Rare and highly sought after by those in the know how..
Depends more on the car i would say, but in this classic it makes total sense to satisfy the fan base 💯
*laughing in European
And to those with small willies.
I've got 2 manuals, 5-speed & a 6.
Trust me, if you'd go drive a Porsche with a PDK, that whole clutch thing would change your mode of thinking. You'd be amazed at how fast it shifts, its mind-boggling.
@@danielfair4675 PDK is incredible and on another level compared to typical autos but still doesn't quite scratch the full manual itch
if a company similar to amg focuses on this one to make it semi track edition.. remove back seat, place nice roll cage.. add lil nice wing.. light wheels.. racing tires.. add some bolt ons and nice tune to reach around 500hp.. this would be sick af
REMOVE BACK SEAT? It’s a two seater lol

You can all thank Nissan for this. Without the Z coming out with a manual you can guarantee the Supra never would have.

More important to have with a MT.

Something to look forward to! Thank you!
We moved from the standard manual which is lighter, easier to fix and cheaper, to a optional manual, which is lighter, easier to fix, but more expensive. Just think about it.
People always complain about an MSRP being expensive but if it’s in the second hand market you’d get very excited and say “the manual MK5 Supra is skyrocketing in value! I’m so glad this is happening!”
It's almost like automatics are the standard now because they're easier to produce, have better fuel efficiency and by now are pretty much all faster than manuals, especially dual clutch automatics. Car enthusiasts in the "manual only" crowd make up such a small percentage of car buyers (and ones who can actually afford a car like this are an even smaller percentage) that there's no point in car companies trying to appease them and spending more money than they need to in the process.
@@flobama3247 Automatics are the standard, so to speak, because most people prefer them. It's simple.
@@flobama3247 true. Autos are more suited for normal cars, but dual clutch in sports cars are insane. People who say save the manuals are the ones who don’t buy manuals. They just pandering around
@@drippgxd Yup, a lot of "save the manual" bros would go with a DCT in a heartbeat if given the option, because they wanna race their friends and other dudes at meetups. Even they know the DCT is the faster and is gonna give them better chances in street races.
@@kadeonines5178 I did, did you?
If Toyota was worried about profits, then the supra wouldn't exist at all. It's more marketing and creating additional brand loyalty than anything.
Wouldn’t the flashing light when the car is technically on neutral, be better as an indicator of when to shift? Like how Dodge does it on their steering wheel? I think that would be better if it doesn’t already have it
Finally a manual version. I'll think about buying it now.

Flappy paddles aren't the same as physically rowing gears and controlling the connection between the engine, the transmission, and the road.
we've established that EVs are already quicker than ICE straight line even with an automatic for ages
the remaining ICE sports cars should prioritize fun over numbers, and the manual is a good step in achieving that
YES. Supra Manual, the new Z. Glad some companies are thinking of enthusiasts and delay killing off the manual.
Thanks for early access Doug!
Enthusiasts don't buy BMWs with new clothes on.
One of a kind transmission… Sounds expensive to fix when the clutch goes
And being a BMW, repairs will be frequent and expensive!
My thoughts exactly!
@@SWTrailsAndWheels It's probably a lot tougher than any BMW manual. As with the engine, Toyota must have developed it to their own durability specs.

Customer demand is definitely correct.
So is the new Z having a manual transmission as well…
Can’t wait till Toyota releases the GRMN Supra

As awesome as this is, the fact that the transmission is some sort of bespoke BMW/Toyota hybrid, means that find parts will be extremely difficult

Maybe it will eventually

There's rumors that there will be limited edition of the Supra with the S58 in the works.
At the Dallas Auto Show this year, my best friend and I tried to sit in one they had. He’s 6’1, and I’m 6’0. I took a pic of him from about 5 feet away, and all you could see was his smile and below.
He said that if he were to check his blind spot, he’d have to crouch down.
I got in it, and he stood in the same spot.
All I could see was his belt buckle and below.
Not ideal. Very sardine-can-like.
Not for anyone that’s a little husky or corn fed.
It felt more like a BMW Z4 it’s based on, than a Supra.
Having owned MK2, 3 and 4 Supras I'm glad they decided to go with a manual! Maybe the wife will let me have one now 😉
I think orignially when the were talking about body design, the vents were actually functional, but they blocked them off to allow more "Aftermarket development" Just like those bars that they have introduced only now in the engine bay. Provisions were always there for aftermarkets to develop products for them.
Yeah, the fake vents are functional. They put fake vents in so they could sell them at a lower cost i believe. Not sure but i know they did it so that the people could swap the fake vents out when the customer wanted more airflow
That reverse lockout is something my 2006 E90 has, and I hate it. When it breaks in over years of use, that lockout is a little less resistant to going all the way over. There have been a few times I almost shifted into reverse at an intersection, or when downshifting into first. I really wish BMW would do what the VW group does with their lockouts.
Ya, that bothered me, should always be far right past 6th or have a something you need to pull or push to go from 1 to R
