Watch Disney Channel's Descendants. That does a great job of building up female _and_ male characters with depth and flaws who start out as villains but learn to be heroes, but also does not have them begin as too irredeemable for us to root for them anyway. It also finds a rare good way to update classic animated Disney fairytales for modern audiences, by showing us why being good and evil are much more complicated than the way classic Disney films initially depicted it by showing Mal's struggle between both sides of morality.
fr this is what i disliked about the movie. you can literally see her lowkey manipulate and control the other two guys just so she can get her revenge going (kinda selfish) and i thought that the conflict would be unfolded more in depth but it just kinda ended with the dude saying "ok ill do this shit again bc we're friends yay"

I disagree that Disney are trying to recapture the magic of their glory days. They're not trying at all. They're just putting out half hearted remakes and prequels where all the money goes into politically correct recasting and soulless special effects.
Soulless special effects do indeed consume a lot of money. Politically correct recasting might actually be cheaper than the alternative, for one usually casts a bunch of newcomers for that.
There’s actually a disdain toward their legacy. That’s why we see them deconstructed, because it’s “fixing” the problems. Lion King treated like a documentary. Beauty and the Beast fixed Belle by giving her inventing prowess, having her intend to escape her life debt exchange, a town who didn’t actually like Gaston they were just paid, a diverse poor provincial town in an era with slavery, making LeFou “gay”… Maleficent men bad, mother figure love breaking a traditional curse requiring “true love’s kiss” regurgitation of Frozen’s nonsense. They hate their legacy. They hate their fans. But they want money, and people are too dumb to stop watching these trash movies which have mostly made a billion each. They see it to wax nostalgia about the original, so all these turds make money off the original. That’s why Dumbo flopped. Nobody wanted a Dumbo movie, because nobody ever even talks about it outside reeing over the crows being racist.
@@elvickRULES The thing is when you are trying to be "right" all the time then it loses it's magic. The bits that should be reasonable seem unreasonable and the bits that should be unreasonable are made too logical that they ruin the magic. In China, it is the state that rules everything. They ensure they do brilliantly at trade, they ensure corporatist oligarchs don't gain too much power (like breaking up Jack Ma's business when he took it upon himself to criticise state economical policy - f u, you're a business owner, not the country's leader, stfu) and are establishing a system where people are getting richer while the state doesn't dissipate. The opposite of the west, where there is increasingly smaller tax revenue to the point where health services can't manage nastier respitory infections, unelected oligarchs dictate state policy and are in charge of all major political parties, making all elections a sham at best. China does do nasty stuff, only to be expected from a place where state is top dog, but at least they're not pu***fying men and turning them into pathetic latte-drinking corposlaves. I'm starting to gain more respect for them than for the west, which at this point, is in its final groans of degeneracy
C'mon man, it's just part of their culture to be racists yellow supremacists that have ethnic cleansing camps, and we should respect them for it, not hold them accountable for their actions.
My reaction to this movie's existence was one single word: Why? Cruella DeVil is not just a one-dimensional villain, she is the quintessential one-dimensional villain. She was written to be one-dimensional specifically because 101 Dalmatians is a story that is told from the dogs' point of view. She has literally the same role as a stereotypical cartoon dog catcher except better, specifically because she is definitively evil (holy crap, that lousy 90s live action remake at least got that part right). The movie's existence is also proof that nobody at Disney actually believes in feminism, and is just using it as a cheap marketing ploy. Because nobody who actually does believe that "I am woman, hear me roar" is such a bestest ever slogan would want to tell you that the woman chanting it turns out to be a puppy murderer. This movie has no reason to exist, its underlying concept is so extraordinarily terrible that the actual presentation of the film is irrelevant. But the presentation of the film is probably awful too, considering Disney's live action remake track record.
I was about to go into my usual rant about how, if a character were truly one-dimensional, you wouldn't be able to see them. Bad characters are two-dimensional, good characters are three-dimensional. But Cruella is so skinny, you're just about right.
Considering the feminist movement kicked off with "Let's blow up buildings and kill people to get privileges we haven't earned and won't take the same responsibility as the men," I'd say that at least is in keeping.
@@viddork That's probably why they gave her that insanely huge fur coat, easier to see her on-screen. It's even a more noticeable color than the black dress she wears under it! I'm going along with your joke, just to be clear.

The Mandalorian was the last Star Wars Movie or t.v. thing that I was a little interested in and the truth is I thought it would be simple. That Mando would go to a few new planets each week. Sign up for a mission, a rare hunt for an artifact or try to collect on his next bounty and even that was starting to feel a bit crowded with " The hero of the week." So other than that if there are a few good independent graphic novels floating around or the old comics I think I'm just done. I'm good with Marvel's adaptation of Star Wars from the 70s where the heroes go off to different planets on adventures. That's all I originally wanted even out of poor ol' George Lucas but he got a little weird. I didn't need to see Darth Vader as a child. Just pick it up at the Clone Wars, they explain everything on the elevator anyhow and I get the gist of it that Obi One has been training Anakin and later Padme' says " You'll always be that little boy I met on Tatooine." The only disney villain who deserves a movie to be redeemed as a hero is Hades. Unlike Zeus, he's dedicated to his job and prefers to avoid any kind of drama, he helps those in need that come to his kingdom, and wether he had an affair or not, he genuinely cares for his marriage. He's overall the most fair god in the actual greek pantheon.
My thoughts exactly as I was watching this. By all accounts, Hades one of the most morally good deities in the Greek pantheon, making his villain characterization in *Hercules* utter 🐄 💩. His releasing of the Titans to overthrow Olympus in the movie deserves a special mention, because Hades’ position in the underworld made him the de-facto warden of the Titans’ prison; he could’ve released them to take out Olympus any time he wanted, but he didn’t, and that alone adds an extra layer of 🐄 💩 to his portrayal in the movie.

This reminds me of when back in the day, my kinda fucked up English teacher wanted us to write a story on a villain character, except in the genre of mentally deranged, cannibalistic, homicidal, or some sorta other dark area. It definitely wasn't my sorta writing area but I gave it a shot. Later, the teacher wanted us to give a backstory to their horrific identity, be able to see where they were coming from, almost sympathise for them... but considering I chose to do a cannibal... it wasn't great. It was an absolutely disgusting story that I would never want to do anything like again. It kinda reminded me of this because Disney is trying to make the audience feel sympathy for a character who was intended to be despised and showed the upmost disgust towards. Disney has really gotten a lot worse in the past decade.
Just go the Jeffery Dahmer route according to Bill Burr for sympathetic cannibal backstory. " Somebody shoved a tuna sandwich up my ass, and now I mistake people for food!😥"
At least with cannibalism, you could argue that it started as a necessity that grew into more as the character lost their humanity to their cannibalism. You have something there, rather than character who wants to skin puppies
@@lordhellstrande7188 Yeah I think I ended up going down that route, think I had a plane crash, stuck on a desolate island, two survived, one rescued, but then got a taste for it and continued it or something. Even then there's little sympathy you can have for a character like that, but yeah you're right, Cruella is probably even less sympathy cuz she doesn't even do it as a necessity, she just wants a fur coat for a laugh.

@Christopher Heskett We bitch about feminism because it is a perspective that has been beaten into us since we were small children. It is old, worn out, annoying as hell and we are tired of looking at it. It is time to move on to something fresh and new, and less toxic.
@Drip Shameless A John Wick vs Cruella de Vil movie would be awesome. Cruella is out of prison and is determined to have her puppy skin coat. One of the dogs she kiddnapps belongs to John Wick. Now John must battle Cruella and her army of henchmen to save not only his dog but 98 other puppies. I don't just want to see this movie, I want to make this movie.
I saw this movie and the whole time in my head "This woman is going to kill puppies!". I thought it was good, decently written and very well acted. I like the one car chase. But when it was over, I didn't know how I was meant to feel let alone how I felt. To further complicate matters they tried to tie it in to the 101 Dalmatians storyline. I think they made it seem like Pongo and Purdy were gifts from Cruella which made NO F***ING SENSE whatsoever. And they made the decision to change Roger and Anita's racial profile. The made Roger a scumbag lawyer who get's fired by Baroness Von Mayonnaise. I didn't even know it was the same Roger until they showed him writing the Cruella DeVil song at the end. Which made NO f***ing sense because it was right after she gifted him Pongo. Imagine if when John Wick after receiving a puppy in the mail writes a song about how much his dead wife was a b*tch. That would have been an entirely different vibe for that movie.
@@TRUMP_WAS_RIGHT_ABOUT_EVRYTHNG They didn't. They tried to just gloss over thee fact that in a few years this woman was going to kidnap and mrder dogs. They just expect us to forget what Cruella stands for as a villain. She's going to slaughter people's dogs to make coats. We know this. Unless this is an entirely alternate time line. That is never clear.
Usually, when writers try to make the villain sympathetic, they go for the sad backstory kind of deal to, if not make us sympathise with the villain, at least understand them. There isn't really a justification for vanity at the cost of killing puppies. Not one which isn't just incredibly forced. "At 1 day old my whole family was killed by dogs, then at 2 days, a dog shat in my face, etc etc".

Nobody thought about the actual character. Some director or VP somewhere said "looks like 'chick villains with multicolor hair' movies are trending. Do we have one? Write a story around her!"

I second that as well, but you won't get evil from Disney. You especially won't get an evil woman from Disney. Got to remember that Disney doesn't believe evil exists. Personally I think they should go look in a mirror.
Nah that guy was probably a white male who owned a gun, so they probably actually see him as a genuine devil. That's kind of the opposite direction they are trying to go here.
This movie began development in 2013, at the time they were trying to set up a scenario where Cruella Deville could run for president so they were trying to make her more likeable. Trouble is she got the nomination too early and ran in 2016 before the movie was ready.
Well the equivalent is RUclips monetizing and protecting animal abusers on this platform. So yeah. I can see Disney protecting their fellow sociopaths.
Disney once built up childhoods and now they're hell-bent on destroying children's childhood AND the "Disney of old" cherished memories in every adult. I wish they would seriously stop. I know money is lovely but they'd make even more if they stopped being so preachy and demonizing everyone and focused on entertainment everyone can love.
The only Disney antagonist that I cant think of who could realistically be remade as a tragic antihero would be Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, but Disney would never do that as he is a textbook example of classical masculinity. Edit: Hades would work well as well, given he’s the only God in Greek mythology who wasn’t a terrible rapist POS.
I was just thinking that! He could have been raised in a household that conditioned him to think showing emotions or crying is weak. You could give him a billy Hargrove type backstory (stranger things) once he started getting recognition for being big and tough it would solidify all he’d been taught. After a while it would totally develop into self destructive narcissism and a need to be the best or ideal. (It’s actually shown how insecure he gets when he realizes belle loves the beast. It’s a person who didn’t praise him for his body and wits and he lashes out because it’s someone he sees as being better then him.) (Also hades really got the short end of the stick being older then Zeus and maybe Poseidon yet getting stuck with the underworld.)
About the narcissistic Gaston... yeah, he couldn't ever be redeemed because he's masculine, unless his masculinity was to be somehow reduced to a bumbling immature fool or an obedient lapdog under the pink leash of some "empowered" princess.

It's truly ashame because when I first saw this trailer I thought it was going to be about Estella being in insane obsessed fashion designer who is obsessed with the Baroness until the Baroness's cruel nature breaks Estella with a need to be the best, she finally mentally snaps dyes her hair black and white and embraces Cruella. Captures Baroness's dalmatians and skins them, wearing them. The way she talks about herself could imply her self arrogance and insanity of thinking she is the best and only the best. Baroness tries to comeback by trying to destroy Cruella. Cruella burns Baroness and her mansion to the ground. The police find her with ash all over her. She gives her speech "I'm Cruella" and the police take her in, Horace and Jasper break her out and they escape to Hell Hall. Cruella plotting her next "project" aka 101 Dalmatians. Okay I know my idea is not great or anything but still. I would've loved to see a dark Cruella movie, especially from the trailers not the watered down redemption story which sucks for any villain story.
It will be over when they'll stop making money with them. But don't worry, even if they keep profiting, remember: time is inescapable. Years will pass, until one day those live action reboots are considered in the same way we consider blackface today: pointless, stupid and embarrassing.

Or the other surrounding characters take constant digs and jabs at the character's cockiness. The Flash, in particular, is a great example of this. A cocky young guy who can move really fast. Smart dude to boot. But to balance it out, you have his anxiety and lack of confidence (at certain times), along with most other super characters making him the butt of the joke. So he becomes likable. Cap Marvel... has none of that.
I'm calling it now. Ursula from the little mermaid is going to be the portrayal of " fat shaming " . Shell be about men not finding her attractive, father figure was abusive..... you get where this is going.
Oh they're for sure gonna make Ursula into some kinda tragic villain or some kinda crap. I have no problem with tragic villains, but from Disney? Yeah no. And as often as they've tried it's just another trope Disney has done to death.
Life deals you a shitty hand in life. But it's what you do in spite of that hand that determines who you are. Look up people like David Goggins, an obese, timid black man with an abusive father who became a Navy Seal because he looked up to Rocky. There's a reason stories like David Goggins resonate through history and not stories like Ted Bundy. People like stories of others overcoming the odds. Tragic downfalls are not people to aspire to, regardless of how sympathetic you make them. They're usually a warning and something to avoid.
On a real note though I could definitely see a live action Treasure Planet having some real potential... as long as Disney doesn't have anything to do with it.
Why are they trying to redeem Cruella? She's literally trying to skin puppies, I'm not sympathising with that! Edit: To everyone in the comments wondering about the redemption arc, according to me, from the looks of the trailer, they're setting Cruella up to be a not like other girls designer who had to suffer because she was "unique" and "different" (in the movie's words, "a little mad".) Now, framing Cruella as some misunderstood anti-hero is terrible because she's a VILLAIN. She wants to skin dogs because she wants to, not because the cruel world forced her to! And that's what makes her infinitely creepier and more evil, not whatever the trailer is portraying it to be. She cannot be turned into some woman others should look up to, or someone who is redeemable because she is evil. It was more powerful not knowing why she wanted to skin dogs because it makes you realise how truly scary some people may be. No one who I know is wondering "why does Cruella want to skin all those dogs" and expecting this Rise To Evil Because Society Sucks™ narrative. If I wanted to watch society corrupt a villain I'd just watch Joker instead because the Joker is still a bad guy, just in a different light. Not to mention, a popular comic book villain with multiple storylines is very different to a Disney villain. Disney has potential to provide a brilliant Cruella backstory, which could still show her to be a terrible person and get the point across, but to show her as a "lesser evil" would be rather disappointing. I could be wrong but that's my take on this.
Cruella literally ordered for a tiger to be skinned just so she could have a fur coat, and wants to skin puppies for another, and I'm supposed to sympathize with her. Wtf?
This movie doesn’t make you sympathize with her, and this Cruella seems to be from a complete separate storyline to the 101 Dalmatians so there’s no puppy murdering-in fact, she even has a stray dog friend.
The moment she said " i am woman here me roar," I just knew this going to be a major box-office flop. Disney keeps digging there grave deeper and deeper
@@my_name_is_desh727 I am really getting to the assumption that someone in the higher ranks wants Disney to dismantle itself, because I can't believe that they don't see that this forumla is a straight ticket to damnation for them.
Disney: Hey guys! Remember Cruella? The old lady who wanted to make a coat out of puppies? Yeah so we've decided to make a live action to explain why she's misunderstood and ultimately change her origin story
She is a strong independent woman who don't need no man. Unless it's a henchman. Who she orders around. Because you know, women need their rolemodels too.
“First, there was the animated movie back in the 1960’s, then a live-action remake in the 90’s and a sh*tty sequel in the year 2000.” And TWO animated series: “101 Dalmatians: The Series” in the 90’s and “101 Dalmatian Street”, which premiered a couple years ago. So…yeah. Disney is obsessed with this story for some reason.
I honestly haven't been not pissed off with anything Disney does for at least 2 years now. It is nothing but greed, hypocrisy, spite and stupidity nowadays.
It has nothing to do with puppies...until the sequel. Even from the trailer I can easily tell the dalmatians are nothing more just fan service. *Hint:* She's not "old" enough
I miss the days when villains were villains and didn't need a SOB story for their motivation. Sure it adds "depth" and "layers" to their character...but I don't need to feel bad for a warlord who just genocided half the kingdom because he was bullied as a kid and his dad walked out on him.
to answer your question why, it's because a lot of the biggest companies are so greedy that they'll do the lowest amount of effort that they can get away with, so basically if they gain a net profit they have no incentive to do any better
It's fine though if they side with China against Hong Kong protesters. Or if the strong woman in the movie is literally the most evil person a child could come up with. "She's SO EVIL, she would... kill a puppy! No, ten puppies! 100 puppies!"
Cruella is just misunderstood. If only everyone had given her coats--each one made with the skins of 99 puppies--a chance, her genius would have been appreciated!

I disagree that Disney are trying to recapture the magic of their glory days. They're not trying at all. They're just putting out half hearted remakes and prequels where all the money goes into politically correct recasting and soulless special effects.
I agree, it doesnt seem making a good movie who also creates lot of money is no longer the first priority, political propaganda bs is!
Preach it bro

My reaction to this movie's existence was one single word:
Why?

The only disney villain who deserves a movie to be redeemed as a hero is Hades. Unlike Zeus, he's dedicated to his job and prefers to avoid any kind of drama, he helps those in need that come to his kingdom, and wether he had an affair or not, he genuinely cares for his marriage. He's overall the most fair god in the actual greek pantheon.
Not to mention, in the actual Greek myths, Hades is ironically one of the much nicer gods.

This movie began development in 2013, at the time they were trying to set up a scenario where Cruella Deville could run for president so they were trying to make her more likeable. Trouble is she got the nomination too early and ran in 2016 before the movie was ready.

It’s a person who didn’t praise him for his body and wits and he lashes out because it’s someone he sees as being better then him.)
(Also hades really got the short end of the stick being older then Zeus and maybe Poseidon yet getting stuck with the underworld.)
About the narcissistic Gaston... yeah, he couldn't ever be redeemed because he's masculine, unless his masculinity was to be somehow reduced to a bumbling immature fool or an obedient lapdog under the pink leash of some "empowered" princess.
This woman is literally buffalo bill but with puppies.

Captures Baroness's dalmatians and skins them, wearing them. The way she talks about herself could imply her self arrogance and insanity of thinking she is the best and only the best. She gives her speech "I'm Cruella" and the police take her in, Horace and Jasper break her out and they escape to Hell Hall. Cruella plotting her next "project" aka 101 Dalmatians. Whoa, can already see the pattern reused.
That fake trailer with Ariana Grande as Ariel actually looked a whole lot better.
Oh they're for sure gonna make Ursula into some kinda tragic villain or some kinda crap. I have no problem with tragic villains, but from Disney? Yeah no. And as often as they've tried it's just another trope Disney has done to death.
I said that on another video. They'll say Triton called her fat and that turned her evil.
That "I am woman" line was about as subtle as getting hit with a freight train that's carrying anvils.

Even Mr Burns is less evil because he eventually decided he couldn't go through with skinning puppies
