I love how these remakes are called “live-action” when they’re like 95 percent CGI. So basically, “let’s remake an animated classic with a worse animated film.”
It’s a shame because they could have done some really nice stuff with a ‘less is more’ mindset. For example, I think it would have been a lot more in keeping with the spirit of the genie in Alladin if they made him the only animated character - something like they did with ‘Who Framed Rodger Rabbit’
The Princess and the frog was primarily hand drawn, showed the value of hard work and the black character wasn’t artificially wedged in at all. Disney needs to remember how to make movies like that.
I agree, it was a movie with genuine soul in it- I wish when Disney cared about their product instead of "Ehhh fuck it, throw in a black person and call it a day, who gives a shit we'll get money-"
They've never made a princess tiana live action...........But I agree to some extent. I don't know about some people but I really don't think the problem is that she's black.
Well the first Disney princess black people get is turned into a frog for the majority of the movie you dont even remember shes black through most of it.
Princess and the Frog has one of the best messages imo. I miss when conflict was based on classism rather than racism or sexism. Classism is more of a problem nowadays than any other social problem, but I guess big media wants to point fingers elsewhere since they’re some of the ones that cause it.
The problem with remakes nowadays is that they're remaking GOOD movies instead of remaking something mediocre and making it an amazing product. Why would I watch a remake of an amazing movie if I can just watch the original?
That's the point: soon, you won't be able to watch the originals. Kids today probably don't even know the originals existed. To them Mulan will always be about a mary-sue who fights an evil-not-so-evil witch for the sake of "honour"; Belle will always be Elon Musk in a skirt; and Arielle will always be black.
i just don't think they want to make the effort, as the drinker said its all about a quick buck. i also don't like alot of kids now don't want to watch older, less polished stuff, for example my nephew won't watch the original beauty and the beast but will watch Moana over and over again
Us 90s kids were so lucky to experience the Walt Disney renaissance. It was amazing and magical and can never be bettered. We have experienced the best.
Frosk was so clueless you almost have to like her. I love that she absolutely torpedoed her own wokeness. She's like my anti-hero, the poster child for go woke go broke.
Twenty years ago, people made fun of Disney for making direct-to-video sequels like "Return of Jafar" and "The Little Mermaid 2". If we only knew how bad things would get.
To be honest, they were bad, too and still are. Won't stop Disney, though, to remake them, too, once they actually run out of all their "big" movies to remake.
The thing is, there were still a number of good ones here and there, and they still felt a lot more creatively inspired and had a lot more heart than whatever the hell is going on with these remakes.
@@Veilfire That's true. Even though I said there are really bad sequels, some were solid to kinda good which had some more effort put in. Those were, in my mind, Lion King 2, Cinderella 3 and Rescuers Down Under. The differences between sequels in quality and effort sometimes really sting out.
@@NormanReaddis you know what else is a hell of a drug.....meth.....I'm just assuming people do it in Hollywood alot if they actually look at this and gave it the green light.

This is literally putting into my words EXACTLY how I feel about disney, today. Poor Walt would roll over if he saw the massive downfall his empire is goin through.
That movie wouldn't be getting anywhere near as much hate had they just casted a white redhead to play Ariel. There are hundreds of Danish women or even Irish women that would have been perfect for the role.
Hence why Manga and Anime have taken over the market. Not only is Japan not beholden to the grasp of woke political bs, but the fact is that after WW2 they became as capitalistic as hell. Finding ways to make the most profit without damaging their brands or names, which is a big thing for Japanese people as a whole. Just being associated with a box office flop in Japan could mean the banishment of that film creator or writer from professional work and destroy their careers unless they themselves had worked hard to the point that such a thing would not harm them aside from a simple statement about how it was the worst thing they as a professional writer or creator worked on. So as the 21st century rolled around now a days you don't see American made 2D animated films or shows that are made in different styles. And any that are made are normally made with what some have thought as templates from other works simply because they're easy to make. Whereas with Japan they've largely expanded both their audiences and talents in animation, with each anime while 2D generated, still has a largely distinct look for each anime with only using something like Pixar 3D animation in a very sparing way that has yet to really hit the fluid motion like normal 2D animation. From what I've seen such animation only is used for say monsters or certain characters during specific moments or items. Overall, this still just boils down as to how Western animation has taken a massive dive into going woke, and many people not wanting such things going to other sources for entertainment, and if that means watching Anime and reading Manga over Comics and whatever is considered American animation, then I'd say that ratio is 8 to 2 in favor of Japan.
@@RavenclawFtW3295 Apparently, Disney plans to go back to releasing 2D films, but I don’t know how true this rumor is because their upcoming films for the next 3 years are mostly live action. They’re even making a live-action “Snow White” and “Lilo and Stitch” movie, as well as, expanding on movies they already have like the”Lion King” and “Peter Pan”, so we’ll be waiting a while for 2D to come back if it ever does.
I know, they talk about inclusion and engage in nonsensical race swapping left and right but you don’t see them going to Africa and exploring the rich history and folklore that they could use to make an animated movie. They have plenty of source material to use but they are just satisfied taking the easy way out and lash out when someone points it out
Another thing that pissed me off about the Mulan 2019 remake (along with so many other things) was the fact that the writers omitted Mulan's cutting of her own hair in preparation for going in the army. THAT is literally the most PIVOTAL action in the whole animated film. It showed sacrifice, courage, and bravery to face the unknown and the terrors of war in place of her father. Seriously, why get rid of that?? Its so important.
I think as much as these movies preach about female empowerment ultimately all they care about is the $$$ and they weren't willing to sacrifice the quick buck they can make by having a "sexy looking" female lead
but if you are stunning, brave and courageous just because you exist, than actions cannot do that same thing. sacrifice is only done by others, not the me me and me group.
They removed the hair cutting part because during the time period that Mulan would've been alive men and women had long hair, so there was no need to cut it. That said, the impact of her parents finding her gone and being worried shouldn't have been changed to be so lackluster but it was :/
@@jcdesantis69 It's cheap and people have been grabbing that garbage up for years now. Why bother with something more expensive and time/labor intensive?
The 80's were a great time to grow up, and the 90's were pretty good too. What we have now, is an industry completely bereft of imagination and new ideas.
It's unfortunate. As was pointed out, these remakes look so lifeless with their color palettes compared to the originals where people put their blood, sweat, and tears into a single frame.
A major problem a lot of these remakes/ sequels have is the writers believe the women in the those stories were “done dirty” and that they must fix that (Trinity,Nala,Leia,Faye)
I absolutely hate how these new wave femenists, all act like women were in cages the last 60 years. Women were liberated in 60s, and been countless, countless, countless amazing women who have been own person since. Like days of I Love Lucy, despite being prototypical household wife from old era, shes way more strong, interesting and lovable as anything these girl bosses of today. I mean every subject, there were women at forefront of it, even video games and horror movies, places that people felt women were being treated as "pieces of meat", yet been the top place for the strong woman archetypes. Women who ran companies like Oddworld and Sierra, had immature and pervy stuff, cause in reality women like the same things as men. Even the old pervy movies like Slumber Party Massacre, literally directed and written by women. Reminds me of the femensists who hate Quiet from Metal Gear. Her body was sculpted from her voice actress. She was hyper sexualized, and these screaming women wanted her gone, yet if they did that, they just took work away from a strong successful woman, who launched her career into space with that character.
@@rovospire You're damn right, dude! I hate how feminists today keep whining about oppression, being "ObJeCtIfIeD," lack of representation, gender roles, etc. Women in the west and even women in my home country (the Philippines) pretty much have more freedom and representation in the workplace and films than they've ever had 70-120 years ago.
I don't get it. So many woman in those old movies are the main charackter. And as I saw them as a child I didn't think they are weak or sexualized. More often than not the man charackters of today are totally useless. At least they could put in some logic. I mean come on. Under the sea is less light. Your skin color changes because of light. how the hell should a mermaid living deep down under the sea get black skin color... What is next ? A black Snowwhite ? I am totally okay with changing te skin color of the charackters, but at least they should check if this makes sense in the stoy of this movie.
My daughter's little friend, whom happens to be black-and I'm only mentioning that because it's relevant, saw The Little Mermaid remake and said "why did they change Ariel and her pretty hair?" .. they noticed the hair, not the skin.. and no female empowerment or race discussion just "what happened to Ariel, why did they change her?" Exactly.. the groups they're trying to Pander to don't even like it
that's a very smart little girl that your daughter is friends with, she knows what's up and can see the big problems with these crap arse remakes that us old schoolers can clearly see immediately.
And there are also little girls who felt really represented by Ariel. There’s plenty of videos on the internet of that too… idk why people want to argue about the fact Ariel is black or that her hair is loced up 😭 she is literally living underwater, it’s not going to flow
Thats one girl though. I can understand that black kids feel left out when they only see white people in disney movies but remaking an old movie, changing the characters skin color and then calling yourself a hero for it is just cheap. If disney really cared about black people not feeling represented they would have made a new movie with a new story and with beautiful animation. Make something new and make people love it instead of just remaking an old movie. It's just so embarrassing.

At the time CG animation was still the new thing and all other methods looked obsolete. Looking back, those Pixar movies stood on their writing first and visuals second, they could have been made in 2D and they'd still have been Incredibles (heh).
@@gromm93 Eeeeeh, I don't really see it like that, at least not to such an extend as today. Black Cauldron for example, while noticeably flawed, had a much darker and scarier tone than films before. For example, the scene with the army of the dead really stood out, and it is still the cencored version. There are elements from other Disney classics, yes, but it did try somehing new. Brother Bear not only had absolutely stunning visuals, it's also the only Disney movie featuring North American native culture. Plus, the realization that the protagonist killed, and I mean KILLED, the mother of a pretty young child is really heavy stuff if you think about it. Normally, as with Bambies mom, the killer is just a faceless evil, they drastically changed that here.
The old hand drawn animations were superior in every way I can think of. Better looking, more expressive, more unique and always tailored to the story they were meant to show.
they'll have a forever special fond place in my memories, my mother still has a box full of VHS tapes on the attic of these old gems, nostalgia is something special right?
I’m honestly rooting so hard for Dreamworks right now- with the new Puss and Boots movie and the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 4, I think they might actually save us.
I think the dark colour palette in a live action movie is less about realism and more about how making everything dark hides the bad cgi and lowers the costs.
Theory 1: It's primarily a tech demo meant to test higher color-depth capabilities on newer cameras/displays Theory 2: It's designed for top-of-the-line 8K UHD HDR Dolby Vision screens, the rich are that out-of-touch!
The irony here being that the more "diverse" they try to make their movies, the less "human" or "relatable" they become. With far less expressionism than before.
i dont understand this diversity bullshit, do people of color really struggle to relate to a character that isnt from their own race? isnt that even more racist?
Literally. Just make new movies? Why do you have to change the og ones into a completely different thing. Heard someone say snow white was gonna be hispanic, it is ridiculous.
omg they casted Haile because she has the voice!! literally, someone saw her sing live and they wanted her to audition for the part. Notice how these Disney movies are MUSICALS?! they need people who can actually sing and not fake it. Chloe grace motez, who was originally supposed to play her, didn't have the natural singing voice. its not just about looks to get a role
I told my wife we should watch the new Mulan (I was trolling her. She didn't know about how abysmal it was and is a HUGE fan of the animated one). Anyway, we got to the roof part in the beginning and she turned to me and said, "This is awful. Can we watch something else?" LOL
This was also my Fiance in the first 15 minutes of Rings of Power with Guyladriel jumping off a sword and flying through the air to kill a troll. She looked at me and said can we watch Breaking Bad again 😂😂😂
Yeah, humanity kinda peaked until the early 2000s, then I think it went (not so slowly) downhill. You can see it in the quality of the movies: the masses started to consume mass produced movies instead of intelligent and well created art pieces. First small clue that something changed, and not for the best.
I saw the little mermaid a year ago with my daughter and was surprised by how brave Ariel was. She saved prince Eric the first time she meets him and he saves her back at the end. She’s very strong willed and independent. The story doesn’t need a “modern” retelling because it’s more feminist (in a good way) than any thing modern Disney writers will come up with. Disney exces don’t care that they’re ruining their own legacy. The more quick and easy money the company makes the bigger their bonuses (which is all corporate people care about)
The original Grimm fairyrale was a very feministic warning over what happens when you give up your body, your soul, your mind, your voice and your life for a man that doesn't love you back. And if parents overly shield their daughters away from the world, that every seemingly friendly man is worth dying for in their eyes.
The Disney films from the 90s are only slightly less unctuous than the current ones. I have always stayed away from Disney and if I had a daughter she wouldn't be exposed to that Disney brainwashing.
"(in a good way)" Yeah, there is no "good" feminism. Feminism is, in practice, just the push to get more and more privileges for women, often at the expense of men. Women are not equal to men, and trying to pretend that they are and to encourage them to be more masculine is a bad thing.
How do you know Disney is about to messed up the movie from watching a trailer where you barely see something of the movie? The only thing you can see is a black mermaid who is supposed to be Ariel. We literally got great remakes like Cinderella and the beauty and beast.
The 80s were pretty fucking awesome too. Nobody had any money, but people weren’t fake, music was unique and original, comedies didn’t inspire a bunch of triggered feminists, and movies had original ideas and great actors. Sigh…
I kept reading the first phrase over and over and was like, what the f, there was an Asian in Narnia? What are we talking about? Then i remembered the lions dumb name
every new project that disney puts out has something that they know they’ll be able to fall back on (race, gender, sexuality) if the movie is received poorly. Starwars is the best example of how they hired weirdly diverse main cast and then called us racist for not liking their movies
The old Mulan told people that you could work hard and overcome adversity and achieve. The new one says that you must be chosen, naturally gifted and predestined to achieve.
Exactly!!! And yet I’m called sexist for not liking the new one even after I try to explain why I hate it compared to the original. I saw it in theaters when it first came out, Mulan was a FANTASTIC film (the original) and even being a boy it didn’t matter to me that it started a woman, her journey was inspiring to me and I followed her throughout the whole movie. The new one…… I had no words
I'm only 23 and I'm honestly crushed by the fact that I don't know if we'll have the same kind of movies that I grew up with. Everything was so thoughtful, creative, and amazingly executed back then. Even in the 2010s with DreamWorks making things like How to Train your Dragon and Megamind are classics to me vs today's garbage. Each Pixar movies each had their own style. There's a clear style difference between The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc, etc. Ever since Coco came out, all the characters look like they came from the same model. Not only that but EVERYTHING is 3D now. I miss the mixed mediums between hand drawn, claymation, and 3D. We weren't over saturated with the same empty animation today. More and more I find myself using the DVD and VHS player than using netflix. I'm hanging on to all hard copies of movies, shows, and games. People might look at me crazy for not watching any of the new star wars, LOTR, or marvel garbage, but it's honestly not worth my time. I genuinely haven't had any motivation to go see a theater movie since 2017 which is tragic imo. As an artist myself, I'm just crushed to see everything get swept up into political correctness and even as a woman myself, see all these garbage women characters that are so full of themselves. Heck as a kid, the first character I related to was Hogarth from the Iron giant. I'm so sick of this mindless garbage that people eat up. I'm so glad I'm not the only one that feels like this, I just wish there was something that we could do about it besides not consuming the content.
@@k-mashup1144 you're the one that needs to grow up and stop coming onto these types of vids and try to control folks. If you like the crap they make now then go watch it instead of being a pathetic troll.
Intriguing. I am a dark skin male myself who grew up with Little Mermaid, Disney shows, Dragon Ball, Power Rangers, Toonami, and other legendary shows during the 1990s and around early 2000. I think the Little Mermaid film released the year I was born. I worked at Pixar as an intern in Summer 2019 in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, and I am currently an animator at a game company. I don't like how, whoever inside of Disney, decided to make Ariel a dark skinned person. It makes no sense. I am also someone who is only attracted to caucasian or latina women, and I probably like redheads the most because of Kate Winslet as Rose Titanic and recently Isla Fisher haha. I also remain single and avoid relationships. I have my good time on the weekends with a woman and continue working throughout the week. All of that aside, I am disappointed with the decision. It makes no sense to make Ariel a dark skin person. It also makes no sense that Rey kissed the man who was trying to capture and murder her in every episode, and the dark skin man who was by her side and rescuing her received nothing but random women thrown at him. They could not stand to see a dark skin man with a caucasian woman. Companies should stop changing the characteristics of legendary established characters and be more creative with original ideas. They could have made a part 2 live action film after this one where the beautiful redhead caucasian mermaid Ariel meets with a dark skinned mermaid in different part of the sea, and they join forces in the film to triumph over a threat or obstacle. Anything is better than rewriting history or changing the original design. It will only make everyone dislike darker skinned people more. I also think that is the secret agenda when these top people make decisions like this. It's quite simple. Change the color of a famous character and make everyone hate the new color because of that major change.
Everything everywhere all at once was the last movie I saw in theaters. Was an incredible film, I’d highly recommend it. So much better then all this blockbuster garbage
The biggest insult to me with Nulan, much like most feminine characters today, is them making her so masculine. Disney seems to hate everything feminine in their female characters. What message is that sending to young girls?
That gender is just a construct designed to keep them down by malicious and misogynist predecessors, rather than an evolving reaction to the realities of genetics, economics, and society; and that they should therefore dump everything feminine like a slave dumping chains. And paradoxically, it encourages little boys to try to become women, since they are held up as a nebulous and all-encompassing moral good only achievable through self-rejection.
What I actually liked about the original little mermaid and Mulan was that any message that could be found inside of them was perfectly natural and made everyone enjoy the movies rather than dividing their audience and losing them in general
I’ve talked to people born in the 90s who wanted to grow up to be old school cell animators because of the Disney Renaissance animated movies. Their disappointment with how animated movies have not only devolved in quality but also made cell animators practically unemployable is immense.
And what do you do exactly when you are essentially BORN to be a talented animator? Its not just something anybody can choose to study and eventually become good at it. People tend to have natural talents for such things which evolve quickly.
To be fair, all the Disney movies shown in the vid experimented with and helped pioneer 3D animation. The key difference is it was used to magnify the cell animation. You see the techniques still at use today by movies like Klaus and Series like Arcane (though in that case, 2D animation to enhance their 3D).
We are cursed to see it all go to shit. Maybe things will have a proper restart in the next 50 years or so. I'm personally hoping for nuclear devastation or a giant space rock to flatten our precious planet.
Man oh man, am I eternally grateful that I grew up in the 90’s. It really was a cultural Renaissance in terms of television, film, and animation. If you take even so much as a cursory glance back into that decade, and compare it to where we are now, it’s immediately obvious that filmmakers today are, by and large, creatively bankrupt.
I think some of the TV shows of today are better but with the 90s it was fun because everything was so different and full of imagination. I might rather watch Better Call Saul than Ally McBeal but Aeon Flux is so much cooler than anything we have or Ren and Stimpy.
I never thought about it that way. Disney hired Halle Bailey knowing fully well the reception she'd get. It's so easy for them to lump the genuine criticism with the racist and bigoted takes, and basically let her take all the heat because she is the face of the movie. She's a good singer and is pretty. She'd do well as a lead in a new IP, but god forbid Disney ever do anything like that. Just do performative virtue signalling, wring the nostalgia bait dry, rinse and repeat. God, Disney and MCU is unbearable...
I bet Ursula isn't actually bad ,and she surely would have some backstory , showing her good. Because if they show a woman as a bad person it won't fit ..... THE MESSAGE !

My main issue with making Ariel black isn't really about the fact that she is black, I understand diversity is important in this day and age, so I'll be more than happy if they make an original movie and story with a leading black character. No my issue with black Ariel is that The Little Mermaid is based on the story of H.C. Andersen, an important author in Danish culture and history, he's like one of the only authors from Denmark that has any real recognition on the international scene, so him and his stories are very important to us Danes, so when Disney decides to make HIS character black it feels (to me anyway) like they are trying to blackwash Danish culture and history for the sake of "diversity" and quite frankly that pisses me off. Imagine if Disney took a traditional folklore from somewhere in Africa and made it an all white cast to "make it diverse" that would not go down well. Why not just make those folklores from Africa into movies? Make the western world aware of those stories like with Mulan. Nobody gives a shit about Denmark on the international scene anyway, so it's fine that something that is important to our culture gets shat on.
Exactly. I'm from France and I love old fairytales from Andersen, Grimm, Perreault, the 1001 nights... They are interesting and teaching stories and moments, and the fact that they tried to change characters that were white, while not daring to touch the other "races" (I really dislike that word, but I don't have an other one in mind) tells you everything you need to know about Disney's mindset while doing those films...
@@stitch77100 Yeah if its diversity we would get a white or black mulan (or side characters), a chinese, black or whatever alladin (or side characters). Or LBGT... But no those are ''cultural,'' and correct while a crapton of diversity is to be found in anything European or American. IMO i dont need it either way, like blade wich they basically wanted to kick blade out off and make it about females. No blade is a badass black character, not about female empowerement. Nor would i need a male Ariel.

This is part of why I liked Zootopia so much. It was a whole freaking world that they built up with its own rules, different areas, amazing colors, and wonderful characters. Even the music was welt jazzy and lively.
The main problem with the little Mermaid's remake isn't the darkness, but her darkness, it means Disney tempered again in our childhood memories and killed again another redhead on the altar of diversity in order to virtue signal to the world. I want my pale ginger redhead Ariel I first saw when I was 9 years old!
Honestly, the lie of "see yourself" irritates me. I related to all the female princess save for snow white lol. It was so beautiful and enchanting to me as a little girl and it’a what inspired me to learn to paint for myself. New Disney could never inspire me like that.

another remake that's so bold and so empowering that everyone will forget about it like all of the others. Disney really is saving the world by fabricating outrage and controversy instead of making an original story with real diversity :/
When we saw the trailer for Little Mermaid wife said they were making another live action movie like they did with Aladdin. We had forgotten all about the live action Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and Lion King.
If I remember correctly most of Disney stories are not original, most of them are adapted old stories and sometime even folklore. Even Lion King is an adaptation of King Lear. Of course I am sure there are some original ideas, but Disney started by borrowing other people's stories. So...
It’s ON PURPOSE! It is purposeful demoralization and degradation; everything we’ve once loved or enjoyed is being destroyed. From art to pro sports to video games and everything in between. Not only that but in this case, it’s just more anti-white garbage, which in turn adds to the divide and conquer as well. And it’s all 100% on purpose. How many times can this happen before the excuse of “it’s just pandering to people” or “it’s just SJW propaganda” The profits do not matter. They’ll destroy billion dollar franchises like Star Wars if it means they’ll piss people off or divide them or demoralize them or what have you. The AGENDAS OF THE SYSTEM come before “making money,” let alone putting out a good product.
A day after watching this video, I saw an article about a live-action remake of Muana. Showed my six-year-old daughter. Her response was '"Why?". Simple, yet brutal.
You know what I love about _The Little Mermaid?_ If you watch it with the eye of a creator, it's obvious that the artists who designed and animated Ariel absolutely adore her. She's full of energy and life. Even the stupid decisions she makes are still endearing and representative of her flawed character. There's real talent behind that film, and that energy translates to a palpable viewer experience. Current Disney isn't even on the same stellar map with their live-action work. It has zero life and is therefore deader than Dumbo's Mom, and the audience knows it.
I hope that you meant to write "Bambi's Mum" there, unless there's something I don't know. LOL. Dumbo's mum was _imprisoned_ for flying into a rage and attacking the visitors while defending her son, but I don't recall her ever actually dying.
Drinker you’re absolutely right. I thought about the fragility of these classics when I get pregnant. So, my husband and I first gift to our daughter was a a very expensive collection of the Disney classics. Of course we had to dig in the flea market to buy a DVD player but after your final speech on this video, I feel that I bought to my daughter a treasure that no one can take us away. Of course, I refuse to pay a cent for Disney plus.
"I refuse to pay a cent for Disney plus" You damn well should! Nobody should be wasting their time on this crap. If more and more people stop giving these bastards what they want, then maybe a change can be made and Disney will come back to its roots.
Weird. The market where I live still has DVD players out the ass lol. I have one, and a back up. I get your sentiment, though. I love physical media. All my books, manga, games, DVDs, etc are physically. Except for a few download-only games I have. But with those games, once you download them, as long as you don't delete them, they're yours.
@@brandyreads Exactly. And DVDs are cheaper. At the Wal Mart in my area, DVDs are, at most, $10. Unless you get a season or whole series of something. Then it costs more. Though, if you do that, then you own it for life. You don't have to pay the streaming cost or be connected to the internet to watch it whenever you want.
"There's an entire world of rich cultural traditions, legends and folklore from every conceivable country, race and creed just waiting for you to try out." e.g. anything from Studio Ghibli perfectly exemplified this point.
That scene where Ursula gets cornered at the docks and indignantly says, "Diplomatic Immunity". While Ariel iconically replies, "It's just been revoked" and impales Ursula in the dome with a vibranium powered, laser speargun... It was so brave, stunning, and totally KO'D the patriarchy in Mordor.

I was born in 2003. I might not be a 90's kid, but I am still close enough to feel this disconnect between the generations. Nothing beats the originals. A remake has to be absolutely amazing to be considered "better". Studios just need to stop remaking everything. It's not terribly hard to come up with new ideas.
Hey david, you grew up in the 2000s eh? You manage to find a decent chunk of good content to watch? Remember the 2000s marked the Disney 2000s downfall where the first half o d the decade films barely grossed any decent money and almost quit the 2D film department once Home On The Range bombed in 2004 until Peincess And The Frog in 2009 got them to return to that to close off the decade. The 2000s also saw 9/11 that caused quite a bit of sadness for a long time, George Bush became US president, DreamWorks animation released two of their worst films ever in Shark Tale and Shrek The 3rd, Cartoon Network had their panned liveaction block phase and youtube got created

So just because someone wasn't born in the 90s, it absolutely doesn't mean they won't ever get to watch the originals and see the difference between the old and new. Maybe they'll prefer the new ones or maybe they'll prefer the old ones like we do, but only time will tell.
My wife and I have this discussion all the time. When a series or movie that we love gets removed from a streaming service, I remind her that we own it on BLU-RAY or DVD and she complains about having to change the disc and how inconvenient that is. And I can't help but poke fun at her laziness by sarcasically telling her how hard her life is. You are spot on Drinker, as always.
What pisses me off about a lot of the streaming is the alt audio options. Blu rays have French audio, but the same flick on say Disney plus doesn’t. Important in my house because my wife is French and our son is in 1st grade in a French immersion school. Ratatouille doesn’t have French audio!

Same. I loved the traditional cell animations. They brought so much joy to me and when I realized I could do that as a job it made me so happy. I still want to do animation, just sadly not for Disney anymore. I just don’t like them anymore and it feels like most of their passion is gone

Just seen the original Little Mermaid last week again: for me Ursula is one of the best animated villain, her movement is so mesmerizing, powerful and scary.
Who are these movies for? Seriously, for adults crying when they see a hint of nostalgia, kids, young adults to get them into the Disney stuff? The animated movies are timeless classics and still look super good in 2022... what is the point of this? Also, as a kid I always thought Arielle was incredibly attractive and a beautiful princess (just from the way how she was drawn and presented), here she looks reaaally ugly tbh, but maybe it's just me getting older lmao
Designed after a drag queen and voiced by Pat Carroll. The design was great and Pat Carroll did an amazing job voicing her but now she’s going to be voiced by Melissa McCarthy and who knows what CGI abomination there going to use for Ursula
They are already retroactively editing and censoring old media so be careful using streaming services and buying digital copies of "original" movies/tv. It's best to have a physical copy and use caution with anything that's been manufactured in the last 5 years
Well, one could say there is a _modern_ audience because whenever there's a huge generation of new people, this new generation has new ideals, different humor/interests, etc. Meaning that movies have to change to meet the interests of this new generation, or modern audience. However, I am in no way saying that the people themselves are different. New generations still like good storytelling and creative content. There's a fine line, and Disney is just throwing stuff out, regardless of audience interests.
Yeah. Showing up for their highly marketed expectation of....magic? I always find seeing the same crwp in a different version for the 6th time magical. How 'bout you?
My biggest confusion about the Little Mermaid. I couldn't figure out why more people weren't complaining about Halle Berry being cast as the Little Mermaid, I mean, she is in her 40's, no one is going to think she is a teenager. Finally I looked it up and realized it was Halle Bailey.
I was born in the late 90s and grew up in the early 2000s. Thankfully, “the message” I grew up with was to treat everyone with respect no matter what color their skin is or what gender they are and to always be willing to be friends with people who are different. Even during the 2000s, I had Disney movies on VHS and would always watch them at my grandma’s house when I went up there for a visit. I remember my favorite one being Beauty and the Beast with Aladdin being a close second (though my new favorites are Emperor’s New Groove and OG Mulan now). I would always sing along to the beginning song! But now my love for Disney has shriveled up and died. I can go back to those older movies, but it only makes me feel sad because that era is just gone now. There’s no hand drawn animation. There’s no heart. There’s only computers. I’d argue that Pixar managed to put heart and soul into its movies even though they did CGI, but that magic also petered out under the influence of modern Disney. Originally, it was rare to see them flop and even then those flops weren’t too bad. Now, they were beaten by the *Minions.* This is a bad timeline for the entirety of entertainment as a whole.
Ayyy, Aladdin and Emp's new groove are two of my favorite Disney movies. The art style of emp's was so vibrant and creative and how they implemented all these cool little mesoamerican themes and details into everything. You don't see that level of minute detail and dedication these days when it comes to art design.
You people keep bashing this " The message" idea... Tell me, what exactly is "the message" in your minds? Seriously think about what you are hating on. What is your point in hating this " message" cause clearly you people do not have an honest answer.

8:33 the whole minute starting here is exactly my issue with not just the little mermaid, but pretty much every live action remake Disney has created so far
The last message about streaming really hit me: altering past publications because they don't fit the current narrative and then pretending it's always been this way, is exactly what happens in George Orwell's 1984. Soon the original is forgotten.
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” -Orwell
I never though ‘1984’ would become so frighteningly possible & realistic. Is it bad that I suddenly have a strong urge to take all of my physical copies of these classics & put them in a war bunker for preservation? Or that I suddenly want to sequester myself in the woods & raise my future children far away from all of this modern garbage?
If they were merely reheated it wouldn't be nearly so bad. It's when they start making changes that it gets so much worse. The animals in Dumbo literally ARE the plot, and yet they are all but excised from the live action remake in favor of an anti animal cruelty diatribe and another unnecessary plot point about girls in STEM professions. FFS Disney just give me the talking mouse, isn't that your wheelhouse??!!
It astounds me how The Critical Drinker hits a fucking grand slam every single time. The hit/miss ratio is off the charts, and no one else is even close.
well he shared two dumb opinions here, that they look like ass because they're live action as if cinema hadn't produced jaw dropping vistas before and that changing iconic character's race is ok
What's even more depressing is that DVDs have a shelf life. They start to delaminate after a decade or two. Even if you have physical media it will not last forever. The same thing is happening with books. People 'buy' the e-book edition but it can be edited on the fly by the company that you paid to 'borrow' it from. You didn't really buy it.
That's why you got to upgrade your physical media to Blu Ray discs. They will outlast you if you take care of them and store them properly. If you want books, buy the physical hard-cover editions if possible. There are books out there, TODAY, that were printed in the 1800s and are still in good condition.
This is why I buy the discs and books but backup everything up to HDD/SSD when possible. I used to have about 500 blurays - without recompression that's about £1800 in SSD's and worth every penny after they take up less space than 2 bluray cases, weigh roughly the same and provide me instant access to all of that material. With ebooks I buy them and then find a source to download it DRM free so that I can view it in whatever reader I want (Amazon Kindle is far from ideal for my eyesight problems). (also Kickstarter's for books often provide the delivered reward as a DRM free ebook in multiple format - well worth the investment) Either way I've paid for it and I don't feel the least bit guilty doing any of that whatever Hollywood wants to say about backing up films that you have already purchased.
@@chrisortiz7487 "There are books out there, TODAY, that were printed in the 1800s and are still in good condition." Books printed that long ago did not use the crappy wood pulp paper processes that they use today for mass market supply in the millions. Further back they made pages out of vellum (cured animal hide) which would literally last centuries if properly cared for. There's no reason to be afraid of ebooks so long as you are prepared to seek out less reputable sources for backups of the popular stuff. For Kickstarter books they usually provide a downloadable ebook files in multiple versions like EPUB, MOBI and PDF as I already got 1 of this year and am expecting 4 more next year (Brandon Sanderson fan 4 life 😁).

35yr old here... Mulan was freaking awesome... She starts out humble and then earns the respect of her peers the way live should be... and the Eddie Murphy character, just brilliant...
It was perfect and had very little fantasy in it compared to the remake. I hated the remake because was promised something more with the actual story then to find out got bait and switched.
The fact that Disney even thought the Renaissance Era movies needed remakes (regardless of the final result) says more than anything else. Those movies can stand the test of time as is, in any market.
Never before has anyone showcased the problem with spoiled millennial filmmakers as well as this video has done. People who grew up in the 1990s watching filmmakers who were not afraid of taking the right risks to be very creative and entertaining for all, now think they do not have to take any more risks and dwell on the past way too much for the wrong reasons, encouraging every major studio to run on nostalgia fumes for the entirety of the next generation of filmmakers, and tweak a past that was already diverse to appeal to more modern diverse audiences for the wrong reasons. 😢 September 22, 2022, 11:09am

That is absolutely the decision of some suit who's never picked up a sketchbook in his life- and odds are good he's older than the millennials. No creative person gets into their field to soullessly parrot other people's work. A cover-band may pay the bills, but everyone wants to make it on the strength of their original content.
I think The Princess and the Frog is one of the most beautiful of hand-drawn animated movies, though I'm sure they did a lot of stuff digitally, as well. It was also the last of the Disney hand-drawn movies because it was fast becoming a lost art.
Yeah. That's why I stick to anime. They do a bit of 3D mixed in with the 2D lately, but it's still very primarily done by hand. They use 3D and bits of CGI to enhance, not replace.
@Marav Reviews Eh, not as much as you'd think, really. A prime example is Megalobox. Sure, it was made using digital means just a few years ago, but the studio "retrofitted" it, if you will, to make it look like it was made in the 90's. And the new Dragon Ball movie being CG will likely not be a trend for the series, as that movie made quite a bit less than the last few at the box office, while costing more. Pokemon is still hand drawn before being colored digitally, Spy x Family uses a mix. The focal characters being done in 2D, with "extras" or background characters being done 3D. Berserk being redone in 3D was a DISASTER, and lost the studio a fortune. My Hero Academia is still done almost exclusively in 2D. Same with One Piece. The new season of Bleach will feature extremely little 3D effects. 2D animation is also a lot "easier" in comparison, as in anime, it runs on "twos" or at 12 frames per second when there isn't any crazy Sakuga animation. Sure, the artists have to redraw the characters every frame, but if you get people that are good and quick enough, that's not an issue.
I’m from 2000s, I grew up watching certain 90s movies however I can tell kids or people from 90s are really lucky, must’ve been a magical experience not only with movies but music and songs.
The 2000s was still a fairly good and simple time to grow up in the United States comparatively speaking than today (pre-2008 banking and housing crisis). Homeland security and the NSA was also new and it wasn't quite as powerful as it is today where the US government spies, tracks and uses it's own citizens meta data, wire taps, and cracks down on the freedom of its citizens using its own governmental bodies. Also while the internet still existed, it wasn't quite as powerful as today where it often takes up a person's entire life. Smart phones were also practically non-existent throughout most of the 2000s with very limited use of social media (which has now become an extremely powerful force today and embedded itself into the fabric of our society), and people still generally had to engage the old fashioned way through meeting in person and communicating face to face. The 2000s was that transitional period between the 90s and what you see today. In many ways they got the best of the 90s while getting access to much of the technology of the 2010s and early 2020s without it overpowering their daily lives. We also had comparatively more freedom. That being said the 1990s was dope lol!🤣
You do not even know I’m from 85z when I watch the predator, terminator. It shocked me. It was groundbreaking for me. I still watch those movies eveart once in a while. Disney classics. I love the 80s more than the 90s by far. Running man, total recall. And many more. It was a great time for a kid to be alive.
I’m glad you called out Pixar as well, a lot of people don’t usually criticize them that much bc their movies are usually pretty good but their animation has looked about the same with each movie recently and it’s getting really annoying
I feel like Pixar is caught in an awkward spot, visually-speaking. They have a *distinct style* now. If they change it, long term fans will go They Changed It, Now It Sucks. If they don't, people on RUclips will criticize them for not changing it. There are already people doing better (more realistic CGI), so if they try to improve their quality, they'll have to compete with those people now. Cue the people complaining that "Pixar is trying to be all the *other* companies now." I don't think there *is* anywhere for Pixar to go, visually-speaking. They unintentionally painted themselves into a corner and now, since Uncle Disney owns them, there's no chance for them to change it.

I also had the spectacular privilege of being a kid in the 90's. The release of a new Disney movie was a magical event back then, and you were never bored throughout the entire thing, always looking for that one moment or sheer fucking marvelous display of art every movie got here and there. I'm still able to pick an old DVD and watch The Hunchback of Notre Dame and be in awe when Frolo sings while the choir chants the very _Act of Contrition_ in Latin. Or still cannot stop the goosebumps while Simba returns to his homeland and steps up the rock to be recognized as king under those few notes of "Remember" from no other than Hans Zimmer himself. Or just loose myself over the ceiling animation when Bella and the Beast dance; amuse myself with the Muses and Hades in Hercules; feel completely immerse in the adventure of discovering Atlantis... It was magical, it was - and still is - unforgettable. Disney today is absolutely unrecognizable in comparison to what it was in the 90's.
Hi daniel! Early 90's child here. Used to be a baby in the year Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the charts and remember Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King. Missed out on Hercules and Tarzan but saw Mulan
MY favorite Disney film from the 90s... was their live-action remake of the 1960s Jay Ward cartoon "GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE". Which, crazy enough, is much closer to the first 2 ERB "TARZAN" books in its story than it is to "GEORGE"! Ursula was just ADORABLE, and reminded me of a girl I knew in art school who, tragically, married the wrong guy.
I often thought that being a 90's kid was a lucky thing. at first i thought it was just nostalgia and rose tinted glasses, but it genienly was a more upbeat time.
Disney destroyed themselves when they started rejecting 2D animation as their medium for movies. Now that everything is “live-action” it zapped all the magic from the stories they previously made. The downfall really started when they canned Treasure Planet. They didn’t want it to succeed, so they sabotaged it by not marketing it all. Shame. I hope the execs burn in hell
I remember winning movie tickets for the premiere of Treasure Planet. They build a a lifesize replica of the spaceship near the movie theater, with live animation, goodie bags, etc... It was actually pretty cool. But I also remember as a 90s kid, this movie confused me because it felt very little like the Disney I knew. It felt like the end of an era. A swan song to traditional animation I realised later. I still love the older Disney movies. Alice in wonderland, The Great Mouse Detective, The Sword in the Stone,... those older movies had such amazing world building and atmosphere. I would have loved to explore those worlds as a kid.
Just in case you never saw this, I think you'd enjoy it: ruclips.net/video/MlRHxllnEnA/видео.html Disclaimer, I have no idea how it was animated. It could of been by computer. But it's still awesome.
It is magic. It's a series of still images on pieces of paper, which, when photographed in sequence suddenly become a three-dimensional object or character, capable of living, breathing, emoting and interacting with other objects or characters on similar pieces of paper. No other animated form is quite like it. It is baffling to me that 3D CGI has supplanted it in the West, when the latter has far more in common with (and should logically have replaced) stop motion animation. Both of those are effectively forms of puppetry, relying on solid models containing skeletal frameworks. Yet, stop motion continues to... well, exist (it doesn't exactly 'thrive', but Aardman and Laika still continue to put out films on occasion, and there's both Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, and the new film from Henry Selick coming soon ). Meanwhile, traditional animation with its inimitable free-form fluidity hasn't had any real presence in the West for close to twenty years (outside of independently funded films such as _Klaus_ or the work of _Cartoon Saloon_ ).
I noticed the trend of remakes as we know it now began in the mid 00's. I was doing film studies at the time I thought even then that Hollywood's creative flair began to die.
@@yulee3266 Yes, Cape Fear (1991) was a remake. There have been other good ones such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978. I feel all these excellent remakes had some creative value, however, rather than just parasitizing off a well known IP.

The inclusion of CGI doesn't imply that it's not live-action.
@@ominous-omnipresent-they it doesn't but when the characters, setting, backgrounds and effects are all cgi that's just a 3d animated movie
@@ominous-omnipresent-they I have met so many people who call the Lion King remake 'live action.' there is nothing live action in that film.
The music was pretty awesome too. They used jazz (not to mention gospel and zydeco) more effectively than a Pixar film that was supposedly about jazz.
Exactly! I'd much rather see something like Atlantis or Black Cauldron remade changing the things that originally weren't all that great.
@@professorbaxtercarelessdre1075 to be fair, Moana is actually pretty cool. The B&B remake was crap, and I don't care what anyone says.

I'm sick of remakes
Twenty years ago, people made fun of Disney for making direct-to-video sequels like "Return of Jafar" and "The Little Mermaid 2". If we only knew how bad things would get.
To be honest, they were bad, too and still are.
Won't stop Disney, though, to remake them, too, once they actually run out of all their "big" movies to remake.
The thing is, there were still a number of good ones here and there, and they still felt a lot more creatively inspired and had a lot more heart than whatever the hell is going on with these remakes.
Those sequels were masterpieces compared to the crap we're getting now.
To think I now long for the days when Hunchback 2 was the worst movie Disney ever made

"Would it kill these studios to release a traditionally-animated film for once?"
Depends if they fired that team.

"Would it kill these studios to release a traditionally-animated film for once?"
Disney hold my….. drink
They haven't released a 2D film for 13 years, now. So, I have serious doubts.
@@thorin1045 that must have been the mentality behind the movie for sure... 😒

They removed the hair cutting part because during the time period that Mulan would've been alive men and women had long hair, so there was no need to cut it.

A major problem a lot of these remakes/ sequels have is the writers believe the women in the those stories were “done dirty” and that they must fix that (Trinity,Nala,Leia,Faye)
I absolutely hate how these new wave femenists, all act like women were in cages the last 60 years.

Being a kid in the 70s and becoming a teen in the 80s was extraordinary awesome! Happy for you that you got the great years just 10 years later.

I’m so glad I read the whole thing, now I agree with you.
There is neither masculinity nor feminity in the west. You are all Grey Sludge. The tribe lording over you like cattle
Toxic femininity.
They want more feminine boys and more masculine girls if you havent noticed.
They are telling young girls to man up.
I went to college for that

To be fair, all the Disney movies shown in the vid experimented with and helped pioneer 3D animation. The key difference is it was used to magnify the cell animation. You see the techniques still at use today by movies like Klaus and Series like Arcane (though in that case, 2D animation to enhance their 3D).

Television is oceans better now, dude.

It’s ON PURPOSE!
It is purposeful demoralization and degradation; everything we’ve once loved or enjoyed is being destroyed. From art to pro sports to video games and everything in between.
Oh damn, I didn't know DVDs degraded that fast. Means my collection is in danger
(also Kickstarter's for books often provide the delivered reward as a DRM free ebook in multiple format - well worth the investment)
Either way I've paid for it and I don't feel the least bit guilty doing any of that whatever Hollywood wants to say about backing up films that you have already purchased.
@@chrisortiz7487 "There are books out there, TODAY, that were printed in the 1800s and are still in good condition."
Books printed that long ago did not use the crappy wood pulp paper processes that they use today for mass market supply in the millions.

I've decided that if I want to scratch a nostalgia itch, instead of watching the remakes with my kids, I can just watch the originals with my kids. Disney is a gremlin and we let it eat after midnight.
That’s what I’ve been saying. I cannot understand why people pay to watch these subpar remakes when the far superior originals are available.
You said that wrong. Gremlins are what you get AFTER you feed the Mogwai after midnight. They don't start out as Gremlins.
As long as Disney doesn't decide those older ones aren't politically correct anymore, you're fine.
Well duh. It's not like a cheap soulless cash grab remake is going to top an original and creative idea. Why wouldn't you just watch the classics? They're classics for a reason.

Taking risks on original films used to make money, so what changed? Why _else_ did that all stop and being unoriginal makes more money now? September 22, 2022, 11:12am
They have not stayed timeless at all. They are scams. Even Disney Hercules for copying and hurting Cats Don't Dance and Anastasia 1997.
I'm certain they didn't think they NEEDED remakes, but rather they figured remakes were a low effort way to cash in on nostalgia.

I think The Princess and the Frog is one of the most beautiful of hand-drawn animated movies, though I'm sure they did a lot of stuff digitally, as well. It was also the last of the Disney hand-drawn movies because it was fast becoming a lost art.
And that film showed how to put "Diversity" by the story and not by force
@@DavidGarcia-qf7gc By having the black character in there for less than a quarter of the film. Yep diversity.

Born in 1990 yeuuuuh

I’m glad you called out Pixar as well, a lot of people don’t usually criticize them that much bc their movies are usually pretty good but their animation has looked about the same with each movie recently and it’s getting really annoying
well in terms pixar is definitely the better one
TBF, if there storylines and characters were still fire, most would overlook this gripe.
Cue the people complaining that "Pixar is trying to be all the *other* companies now."
I don't think there *is* anywhere for Pixar to go, visually-speaking. They unintentionally painted themselves into a corner and now, since Uncle Disney owns them, there's no chance for them to change it.

The freedom to express things in animated movies/series is probably exactly why anime is doing so incredibly well outside of Japan lately as well.
I at least had some great Disney and Pixar movies in the 2000s
A swan song to traditional animation I realised later. I still love the older Disney movies. Disclaimer, I have no idea how it was animated. It could of been by computer. But it's still awesome.
@Be Straight What does that have to do with animation?
I too wish for traditional animation to make a comeback
I noticed the trend of remakes as we know it now began in the mid 00's. I was doing film studies at the time I thought even then that Hollywood's creative flair began to die.
