The content you Josh and Dan put out is amazing. I’m running a 2016 Obsession Def Con 6, because it was given to me. Built a 500gr arrow following this guide with Gold Tip pros and 100gr Magnus Stinger that fly amazing. Never in a million years did I think I’d be stacking shots with broad-heads beyond 30. The MFJJ recipe just plain works. I’m at 17% FOC, left helical, 300 spine, and the arrows are darts
I absolutely love tac vanes in a 4 fletch and that's my setup, they stabilize boadheads better than anything I've found personally. But, admittedly I don't shoot very long range often.
On my RIP XV Elite arrows, I used Easton Axis HIT inserts with Bob Smith Industries glue, and Gold Tip ballistic collars with hot melt glue, with 125 grain field points, giving my 27" long arrows a 15% F.O.C. I've got them fletched with 2.5" Bohning HEAT vanes fletched with the most helical I can get from a Bitzenberger jig with an upgraded AAE nock receiver. I'm only a 26.75" draw. Shooting 50 yards the other day with these arrows from my Solution SS, I put a 1/2" group right in the 10-ring with open sights (no lenses anywhere). Tim, it's "cyano-acrylate" (6 syllables). LOL!!
4 fletch aae 2.3. I have shot this combo in the past with a mechanical and have had really good results. I have some new Gold Tip LRT’s made up and will be shooting them this week vs my Airstrikes and TAC vanes 3 fletch.
Bought my first bow back in March and purchased a dozen rip gamer shafts and couldn’t have been happier with the quality and consistency. Keep up the great content!
I e ok old love to be bored by a video about the 4th finger. New to shooting and love the down to earth videos you, Dan and MFJJ put out. I may be biased as I live in a small town just outside of Spokane Valley.
Some of the best long range groups I have ever shot are with a 4 fletch blazer and Gold Tip Kaos arrows. I do think that they parachute at really long distance but out to 100 they shot well
Definitely build a 4 vane for MFJJ! Look at the TAC Matrix 2.25's...also in my experience ABB's always clock right, every other string I have used clocks left (GAS, Zebra, 60X), all out of the same bow. Not sure if that is the same for everyone, just what I have experienced.
Hey Tim. Switch to TAC vanes is my opinion. They have the best adhesion! You won’t need to add the dabs of glue on the front and back of the vanes. I’ve never had a vane come off through 3 dozen arrows. Good video!
@@TimConnor13 also if we are “splitting hairs” when you put on the flex fletch, it adds weight and inconsistently. Kinda looked like you sneezed on it 😂. In all seriousness I really enjoy your content and editing! Keep it coming man!
Good build! Almost my exact process except I score the inside of the shaft with a bore brush and the outside of the halfsert with sandpaper. Then clean both with acetone before hotmelt gluing. A little extra confidence for me. I would recommend the AAE Pro Max Vanes for your 4 fletch build. I love them for 3D! Thanks for the good content Tim!
Awesome video as always sir 👍 Tac vanes are awesome I use the aae primer pen and glue with the rip TKOs and have never had a issue with vanes not sticking or coming off ever, I’m also a fan of the 4 fletch, I get a few extra yards out of my sight tape and if you send one through the target and fold a vane all you have to do is get a little heat on it with your breath or whatever and 80% of the time it straightens right out
*pro tip* screw field points in prior to install it keeps your digits a little further away from the heat once glued in hold your arrow by the nock and drop your arrow field point first to the ground if it thuds then your done if theres a buzz take it out and re apply hot melt...*shout out to GRIV*
You can use regular glue like Bob Smith glue and still remove the inserts if you have to. Using a drill bit that is just a touch smaller than the inside diameter of your arrow. Slide it in with the chuck side toward the insert and then with a whipping action it will knock the insert loose and not damage the arrow. I've been doing this for a very long time. The problem with hot melt is it can't be used with certain arrows like black eagle. And if you get the hot melt too hot when inserting the insert you can damage the arrow and ruin it.
Still shoot some 480 spine broodline i bought with blazer vanes 29 in . Only have 27 draw and shoot 50 lb on a 2012 bear legion. Have alot of fun with a blackgold 3 pin ascent whitetail hunter and a 10 in. Fuse carbon stabilizer . Still shoot a whisker biscuit its fun . Have teied making my on arrows. Got the cutting and square but wish i could remember what the insert was. Since you can still buy 400 and 480 spine easton bloodline arrows for practice. All weight of arrow is around 360 gr.
Def try a four fetch! You don’t know if you don’t give it an honest try! Tournament archers like it because they have an additional clocking location for a flyer while group tuning. Just keep it around 2”. And lighter is better to maintain FOC.
Love the content and how it is presented along with the knowledge the MFJJ brings. I also like the dabbling in New things that you are providing. I have shot both 3 and 4 fletch Arrows over the past 3 years. I really like the bohning X vanes 2.25 inch. They are light and adhere very well to 5mm Arrows.
The NEW, X-3, 3 inch Vanes, by Bohning, are out, Now ! Using the TOUGH, HEAT Material and X vane Shield Shape, so that Now, you can get by with, using only 3, 3 inch x .48 Tall Vanes, Fletched Helical, to Spin your B-H's,.. "Well"
I've run 4 and 6 (gasp🙊) for the 4 ive run, TAC, and bohning x3 1.75 and 2.25 which are actually lower profile than the 1.75. for 6 ive run the AAE plastifletch 1.6 and thats lighter than 3 max stealth. Once the arrow is spinning there isn't really a slow down difference from 1-5° . As long at the tip is pulling the arrow (FOC) i haven't noticed a large difference in impact point as long as the vanes are appropriately sized to the configuration. Ie more smaller vanes vs fewer larger vanes. The TAC vanes do drag less and give you a couoke more yds at longer distance, they are by far the hardest to fletch consistently
Apply a small dap of arrow lube on the outside of the shaft before putting your inserts in and it won't allow the glue to stick to the outside of the arrow.. but watch to make sure it doesn't get on the inside of the arrow to glue won't allow the inserts to glue up at all
Insert Iron works really well as a glue. Holds way better than hot melt and if you put the arrow end in boiling water for 15 minutes or so, you can pull the insert without damaging the carbon. I've lost many inserts using hot melt. Depends on the insert, but the bond strength no matter what prep I used just did not keep inserts in consistently enough for me.
Good video, try some flex fletch FFP-175’s (3.1grains each). I use one stringer wraps in the 4” range, so easy to take off if needed. Heavy up front, 60yds spot on. This is in the Midwest, but it would be neat to see how they would do for you guys out west. I’m currently at 22-24%foc.
Would you pleaaase do a video comparing the same fletches on the same arrow. One fletched with a blitz and one fletched with the arizona mini and shoot some groups to see what shoots tighter and see if the increase in helical makes more drop over long range
Have you, or MFJJ, noticed if the silent knight vanes get loud, or louder, once you fletch them with helical vs straight? And would you recommend them for a hunting arrow setup? With fixed or mechanical broadheads? Just trying to not make and fletch several dozen different arrows for daily practice, 3D, and hunting setups
Awesome video! About to build some RIP TKO’s myself. I saw you went with the 250 spine, do you and Josh prefer to over spine? If so, is there a benefit? Genuinely curious cause I’m a 29.5” draw at 70lbs and victory recommends 300 spine. Thanks in advance and love your content, keep killin it brother!
You said those strings clock right, but you didn’t say which strings you had on this bow. Are they factory? Or did you switch to A3 or Gas, I remember you talking about both.
Sweet Build! I just got a RAM spine tester part in that will let me finish filming my black eagle build 😎Planned to film some broadhead tuning with the FOCOS system, but it is kinda a "redundant step" now because I couldn't wait to shoot my broadheads and they fly great regardless! However I'm skeptical that the FOCOS system may be weak like the rip tko stock components (if you check my vid I show a deadspace in the outsert.. would love to know you and MFJJ's opinion on it).. you definitely got my wheels turning on the podium components for my next build!!
From watching the videos Josh has talked about fletching, I’ve come to the conclusion that josh doesn’t like a 4 fletch because of the extra weight it puts on the back of the arrow vs the same vane as a 3 fletch… that’s why he seems to go with a more radical helical… but from the videos I’ve seen with those arrows flying in slow motion at longer distances, I’ve seen that radical helical causing a sort of parachute effect… I personally like a 4 fletch with a 1.5 degree helical.. gives you the extra steering for a fixed blade without a parachute… I use a bitz jig also..
Any experience with a really light arrow like the Victory 3DHV/RIP XV, break off target points and….. small low profile 2, yes 2 vane opposing vanes, like the Vanes Tech 1.8’s?
Did you re-weigh all your arrows after gluing in inserts/fletchings? Just bought some arrows and supplies from Josh recently. First time doing arrows, and started putting them together last night. Had all the inserts and arrows weighed out and matched up and was sitting +- 1 grain (so a total of 2 grains off between the lightest to the heaviest). After using hot melt to glue in the inserts, most of them were close but there were a few "flyers" that were higher or lower than expected. One or two quite a bit off. My points haven't arrived yet because I'm playing with different weights. Should I just wait and see if the weight variant between the tips makes up that difference, or go ahead and reheat/pull those inserts and reglue? I felt like my process between all 12 arrows was pretty consistent so I was surprised to see some at such a big difference.
I’d love to get some “budget arrow” tips as well. For those of us that can’t afford $25 arrows, something somewhere in the middle. Like right now I’m shooting Easton 6.5’s. Is there something that’s a comparable price but is way better than that arrow?? I’m looking for a decent 3D arrow right now, but also am looking for a decent hunting arrow. It’s hard trying to figure all of this out by yourself when you’re a 33 year old who has never been around archery and is picking it up on your own.
@TimConner13 great video loved the close up on the top and tail glueing. Question for you or MFJJ, I have been able to put together a long draw (31.5”) hunting arrow together that has FOC of 15% and keep it under 520 grains. Any ideas??
Going down the insert/outsert/half out/collar/hit insert and having stupid money in a single arrow I’ve gone back to a standard GT Hunter with a brass insert. I’m none the wiser and my shooting is the same. And I don’t cry when I lose one. Come on Tim give us a budget build and prove me wrong.
Just curious about fletching, have you or mfjj ever shot feathers and would you for shorter distances say 30to 40yards, just curious on your takes. It would be for white tail deer in Wisconsin.i wouldn't feel comfortable at this time to shoot any farther than that from a ground build.
Tim, any idea why the Gold Tip FOC calculator comes out about 2.25% less FOC than Podium Archer's? My builds arrow weight calculations are identical on both but MFJJ's calculator is running 2.25% higher compared to Gold Tip's... Which is correct?
Awesome video! Do you just always have your ATV in the back of your truck? Or do you only film after you've been riding? Hyperfocused minds want to know lol
I just got a dozen of the same arrows and same inserts. Was kinda bummed after spending that much to find out my 125 grain qad exodus broadheads don't fit. Will probably have to go down to the 100 grain ones.
@@ieanfrm8035 the shaft above the threads on the broadheads are just slightly too thick so it won't allow the threads to catch. You can really force it and barely catch the threads but there is no way you will tighten it all the way down. They say the 100 grain fit fine or you can try and lightly sand the shaft on the broadheads.
Hey bud I just got my inserts in today and I had 3 packs of qad 125 exodus I bought and 2 packs fit pretty and 1 would not like yours so it's a qad problem not a podium insert problem did some research and it has been a problem for some so I contacted qad and they are sending me a new pack so its not the difference between 100 and 125 grain its just a flawed broadhead
i shot blackeagle zombieslayers with my starter setup and they have been the best and just unbreakable arrows i had. Can't shoot with them anymore because they are too short for my current setup and i can't find them anywhere in my country or anywhere nearby without paying the same amount for shipping as 12 shafts 😢
Hey Tim. I saw you went with 250 spine? I went with 300 according to victory website with an 80 lb draw and 27.5 inch arrow shaft. I hope I’m not underspined. What’s your draw weight?
I run a 4 fletch GT velocity for 3D using Q2i fusion X2 vanes. I get asked all the time at shoots why I use that setup. My reply “because it looks cool “ 😂
I'm getting ready to build a dozen myself. I've typically gone with GT Hunter XT's. I've been shooting their 340's for a while now. But, I've gotten in alot better shape over the last couple years and have increased my draw weight. So I'm gonna need new arrows anyway. I just don't know what size spine to go with. I want to run at least a 125gr broadhead with a 100gr insert, But, all the spine charts I've seen, just show the tip weight, they don't include the insert weight in the calculations. With my new draw weight and my draw length, they all say 300 spine. But, what about the extra 80+ grains of going from a stock insert to a stronger one. Should I just jump to 250 spine? And hope that's right. I'm on a budget, so I can't just buy a dozen arrows and not have them right. Any help would be immensely appreciated.
After building arrows for like 15+ years for target and hunting I’ve come to the conclusion it’s easy to put too much detail and wasted money into them. High end collars, special nocks and nock bushing may not be required for certain applications. You don’t need a $30+ to kill a deer at 30 yards or less. Or a pig at 20 yards. 99.999% of the archers can’t hit a dime multiple consecutive shots anyway. So why waste the money? A midge range cost arrow in .003 is plenty sufficient most of the time. lol, if. If I could shoot better my ideas would change I’m sure. Bottom line is the arrow must fly straight and clean right off the rest. Flying clean without the vanes needing to take over and correct flight issues. The main thing ,IMO, is the arrow ALSO must hit “ behind the pin”. It’s not quite rocket science but close, lol. 👍👍👍
Got to shoot my first actual scored 3D event this weekend, it was a blast. Have a great week and get out and shoot your bow ✊🏹
Once you get into the rabbit hole of target archery I have found it just makes you enjoy it that much more.
@@jacobthering5278I’ve been really digging the process
Hey Tim, are you coming to Oregon to shoot the n.w. mount challenge at Hoodoo?
Tac Driver 2.25, 4 fletch, 2 degree helical. That would be enough drag and you'd get quiet flight I think

I used 4 bohning x3 vanes on my recent RIP TKO build since they're 2.25" x .38" with a 3° left helical on my LCA jig. They fly great with a broadhead!
You and MFJJ and probably my two favorite archery guys on RUclips. Truthful, to the point, and not too serious. Wish you all the best Tim

When aligning the nock with the helical fletch, is it aligned to the front or the rear vane?
Is it AAE mini max, Arizona ez fletch mini max? What's the relationship there?

@TimConner13 great video loved the close up on the top and tail glueing. Question for you or MFJJ, I have been able to put together a long draw (31.5”) hunting arrow together that has FOC of 15% and keep it under 520 grains. Any ideas??
Tim, why did you stay with the 5mm instead of trying the 4mm?
I see you wearing that Froning Farms shirt. 😉
I thought I saw MFJJ say to put the spine align arrow on the bottom in another recent video??
Flex fletch 187s 4 fletch on some vtac 23s or ps23s
Cool vid Tim, got any tips on how to store the fletching glue? Specially the Bob smith and aae max bond? The tips always get super clogged for me
Awesome video! Do you just always have your ATV in the back of your truck? Or do you only film after you've been riding? Hyperfocused minds want to know lol
It’s been in my rig a lot this spring.. I leave it there sometimes 😏
I just got a dozen of the same arrows and same inserts. Was kinda bummed after spending that much to find out my 125 grain qad exodus broadheads don't fit. Will probably have to go down to the 100 grain ones.
Why don't they fit i just ordered 15 of the titanium inserts for my tko's and that's the broadhead I use😮?
Tim, for someone who’s unaware… what’s the main difference in an insert, outsert, half-sert? What’s the benefit?
Further the “sert” sticks out to the arrow the easier they are to bend.. inserts or very short outserts are sturdy
@@TimConnor13 ah okay, so it’s about durability? Thanks.
i shot blackeagle zombieslayers with my starter setup and they have been the best and just unbreakable arrows i had. Can't shoot with them anymore because they are too short for my current setup and i can't find them anywhere in my country or anywhere nearby without paying the same amount for shipping as 12 shafts 😢
Good video
Hey Tim. I saw you went with 250 spine? I went with 300 according to victory website with an 80 lb draw and 27.5 inch arrow shaft. I hope I’m not underspined. What’s your draw weight?
No you’re good with that draw length.. 👌
what camera do you use?
I run a 4 fletch GT velocity for 3D using Q2i fusion X2 vanes. I get asked all the time at shoots why I use that setup. My reply “because it looks cool “ 😂
Bohning X-Vane 1.75 for 4 fletch!!
Everytime you shoot an arrow, it looks like it surpises the heck out of you hahaha
Build the 4 with aae mini vanes.mess with mfjj.

Any help would be immensely appreciated.
also get some specialist advice... ie speak to a archery shop, or those in the upload etc
as you mentioned you want it correct & you've a budget.....
@@malp6280 That's exactly what I'm hoping for. I'm searching for answers
6 fletch for full effect!!
I put a strip of aluminum duct tape where the vans slide in and my vanes get pushed on all the way.
Victory or Black eagle and Q2i vanes
4 vanes are stupid...Josh is right Tim, you're wrong...Hope this helps! Lol 😂
Torn between VAP TKO and RIP TKO elite series
No bad choices.. rips like more durable
Man I want a one wheel so bad lol
I love it.. but I don’t use it a ton.. fun when I do tho
Try the Bohning low temp melt. It’s the blue one. I can’t believe u didn’t clean the carbon dust out of the shaft with like 91% alcohol.
I’ve never had a problem with a dirty shaft
😂
Bobs burgers
Not ripping at all, but you do flinch a bit when you shoot? I should probably film myself to see if I do too haha @timconnor13
