- I had just came back from hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and found myself homeless. I had given up my apartment to go hike and now that I was back I wanted to turn my car into a livable space. I eventually did that (You can see it here ( • Camperizing a Honda Ci... ) but found I still needed access to lots of stuff from my storage unit which was 6x4x10 and everything was just jammed in there. I figured there had to be a better way. I scoped out a 10x10x6 unit and moved all my stuff inside. Still super small, I managed to build shelves and organize it in a way where everything is accessible. But why stop there! I decided to build shelves and a water system and setup my actual apartment so I could live there. I was moving in! I ended up living in the unit for around 2 months. I only spent around $100 making the space as efficient as I did, mostly because I already owned so much hardware. The cost of rent on my unit was $205 a month (which included insurance). A bargain, considering an apartment in the area was $1000+ a month. I made this video showcasing my work/unit.

Recently, I read where some storage companies have staff walk through and will lock unlocked units so you run the risk of getting locked in.

My uncle lived in a storage unit in the early 2000's for around 2 years with a similar set up. A bed, TV, toaster oven and mini fridge. He didn't disturb anyone and even the owners never questioned it, he's always lived alone and I think he was happier in a tiny storage unit than he is owning a home now.

This video reminded me of feeling appreciative of what I have and I'm basically in the same spot you are. Renting an apartment, living with just my dog, I converted the spare room into my gaming/mini-theater room. Saves on heat in the winter too because I'm usually in that room with all the electronics running, so I can keep the heat down lol. Honestly I don't know if it's my age (39) or covid but I really lost interest in frivolous things like going out all the time. I still love my vacations, but I'm quite happy at home in my little apartment with my dog lol

Someone has to know he’s in there. The electric cord on the outside is obvious. And when he’s inside there is no lock on the outside. If they push on it and it’s locked from within they would know. Or smell food in the hallways, or hear him moving around, or his surround sound lol. He’s probably coming and going often. I don’t believe the owner doesn’t know. These places typically have cameras everywhere too.

A guy i knew bought a 17 foot camping trailer and rented a 20 by 10 foot storage for 300.00/month. He was able to tap jerry rig some ventilation piping so that he could cook and have the smell and smoke escape through the roof. He did all of his cooking at night and only had to empty his grey holding tanks once every two/three weeks. He would occasionally take his trailer out to make it appear that he was going camping for the weekend. he did this for nearly three years saving all his money for a down payment for a home, which he was successful in doing.

Because money. Also subsided government housing is currently a scam that benefits landlords. They charge the government the maximum amount of money for a person to live on their property, and the government pays it. So now no landlord wants to rent to anyone that doesn't have a housing voucher.
I heat ya! I've been wanting to do tiny living for years, but the obstacle I keep running into is there is nowhere that really allows it. IF you can find a specialized space for it, the rules are ridiculous. One place I found said they would take me, then a few months later when I was ready to lay down the money, they said, "Oh, by the way, what will you be driving?" I told them I don't drive, but if I need to get places I would get a 4 wheeler. Then she said "Well, we really need somebody here with a 4 wheel drive truck, so you can't move in here now " Like, what difference does it make to them how I get around as long as I'm not bugging people around me?
The only other place I could find said I wasn't allowed to have running water in my place. Nope. That doesn't work for me, either. I'm not running to a hand pump well to fill my kettle for a cup of tea or lugging heavy pails of water to heat on the stove to fill my tub with so I can bathe in private instead of using their public showers.
They dont want people living in tents, in their vehicles, or in smaller more affordable spaces, but they won't bring the cost of housing down to something reasonable. All I can say to that is they can't have it both ways. If you're comfortable in a van or rv, go for it as far as I'm concerned

If I were still able to drive, I'd be adopting the nomadic lifestyle myself. Yeah, there's a while lot to keep in mind and a ton of things to be prepared for, but for a single person it can also solve a ton of issues. I'd trade $2000/month payed out for rent for upkeep and maintenance at a fraction of that

Looks like he was biding his time to stack paychex for a new apartment. Damn and i lived in my car thru some shit like that. I wont lie i thought of doing this but figured fuck it just sounded retarded and uncomfortable so i slept in my car instead. Living in my car i soent $400 on gas a month just from running the ac in the heat. It was god damn RIDICULOUS. The shit us poor ppl go thru. I had to run over a car jacker that almost stole my car with me in it. No worries he survived and learned his lesson.

i know a couple in my town u could pull this off in. all the units are outside and its a lot of them. no security and no gates. not even an office. a modern storage unit though, u would probably get caught.

About 25 yrs ago the company I worked for asked me to transfer and run a branch in a different city. When I got to the offices it was in a uhaul office/warehouse space. So offices in front with a garage type warehouse in back.Well this had an upstairs in the warehouse spot with like a storage room that we didn’t use because it wasn’t needed. I converted that upstairs space just like he did in this video. I even had enough room for a separate area for a mini-kitchen. Lived there for over two years while I saved money to buy something. My boss never knew so I lived two+ years rent free. It sure helped me and allowed me to get the lay of what area of the city I really wanted to live in before I purchased anything.

I noticed that the managers of Storage facilities also lives in that storage building. On multiple occasions when I had to store my items in the smallest storage, I would always see the manager and his wife come home and park their cars and enter the storage building facility. They are the ones who park their cars and live there. You never know which door is to their house because all the entrances look like storage facilities. So this is possible if he works for the storage company or he is the manager on site. What a great thing that properties allow managers to live for free just to save costs and keep an eye out for the facility.

Storage facilities have an apartment attached to the office that employees live in. My mother-in-law ran two facilities and got free housing.
They don’t need to live in one of the storage units.

This video motivated me to do the same! I just sold my house and was moving to another state but had nearly a 3 month period of no house. I did a lot of modifications to the building that I rather not mention. I did return nearly everything back to the way I found it. I pulled it off successfully for a couple months. There was a couple hotel visits in between. I also did not make any noise in unit.
That extension cord running from the hallway outlet, and the sound system, makes it not stealthy at all; what I'll do different is to buy one of those battery power units and charge it in my car during the day to use through the night, and use a head set for sound, so to not give away my presence in the unit. I would have a gym membership for showers and bathroom use; and would try to avoid sleeping in the unit every night, sometimes I'll sleep in my car to avoid a routine; also I'll get to the storage at different hours of the night, mostly for sleeping. I might not cook inside the unit, just in case there's employees doing rounds through the hallways.

This needs to be an option for homeless people, people living in their cars or people about to become homeless.
One large room set up as a tiny studio could be the salvation for many who would be out on the street living without any dignity.
I would love to see a very rich person buy a few storage facilities in big cities and turn them into low rent, tiny studio apartments complexes similar to what this man did with just one. (Just add communal bathrooms and water supply areas for the water jugs for the units since to keep costs down I assume they would not want to spend the money to run plumbing to the units.)

Been there, done that for 6 months.
Rented storage unit. Did not have any kitchen set up. I would exercise and take baths at a local gym that charged $119/year if paid in full up front. Now a days there are several gyms that charge $10/month. Then visited and took naps during the hot days in the storage units. Slept in the car in the evenings. Had to ask to use power cord. Not allowed over night. And they had a curfew to be out in the evenings. Normally by 10pm. Cudos to this guy. But due to many people doing this, policies have changed and video cameras have been installed to prevent this now.
I would imagine you park your car somewhere off the facility.

Ive worked in storage for 10 years. I would have noticed the extension cord. We have to check for spider webs in the corners of the climates. Ive caught a few people living on thd property shortly aftervthey began renting by looking at the gate reports and cameras. I walked in on one that was in his unit with his whole set up.
Yeah those other workers must be super cool with him living there. Truth is we can't tell if he is living there or if he is just filming so it looks like he is living there.

Here’s the deal… I love the ingenuity on display. Absolute respect for not only gaming / sticking it to the system (he did this to save up for an apartment… and succeeded!), but also by being incredibly creative and treating it like an adventure. I love the engineering put into many of the “hacks” he used in this unit and the effective and functional use of the space. I have a storage unit myself and have fantasized about doing exactly what he did here.
Having said that… I think there was a little dishonesty involved in the narrative of the video. I’m sorry but there is ZERO chance the manager, a maintenance person or at least one other tenant (see: Karen) wouldn’t have noticed that electrical cord and cell extender going into the door. It’s the ONLY one like that in the whole place. Too obvious.
I think management are either a family friend, or are being paid hush money on the side to allow this.
Does it ruin the video for me? Just the beginning. The rest is good enough to make up for it. I just think he should have kept it real from the get-go. I still come back to watch this from time to time… it’s a really cool space and I envision watching Empire Strikes Back while eating a sampler platter in there.

Oh shed dweller here again. Btw before COVID I went to a gym in town where I could get a sauna and shower for five bucks. I am an elderly lady with heart trouble so I can't risk COVID. So now I wipe down mostly but shower in rainstorms. Treat yourself! It is a most delicious experience.

I had a small storage unit that held a couch and a few other things, It was small. I was in between places and was sleeping on a friend’s floor at his house. I’d sometimes go to my storage unit and crash on my couch in the unit. It was cozy and a cool place to get away too. Started organizing it thinking long term but ended up getting my own place again. Gave me great ideas though. Definitely do it again.
So this must be the first storage unit that doesn't have security cameras. He must work there...

And when there is supposed to be literally no source of food coming from this facility, that's probably more suspicion-arousing than anything else.
Edit: seems like staff knew he was there and probably just turned a blind eye. Smell is still a good thing to take into consideration when hiding out anywhere though because it's one of the hardest things to control
