How is the neo 2? It was one I was considering before getting the poco f3 for £200.
They both have the snapdragon 870 and I'm really impressed with the F3. I was even thinking of buying another one when I read about the new chip issues.
It has some quirks but mostly does everything. I would have paid more for it but it was a flash sale. A lot of phone for the money even for someone who doesn't game.
The camera gets slates but it's not that bad IMO. Possibly if used to better cameras but it's more than adequate.

We've seen the same thing with Mi 11 last year. I think it depends on exact phone model. Snapdragon 888 in Mi 11 and in Red Magic 6 shows different results. And S21 Ultra was cooler than Mi 11 or OnePlus 9. So I hope that we will see better realization of Gen 1 in S22.

Don't think optimisation is the issue here. I'm almost certain this is Snapdragon 810 v3.0
The 888 was pretty bad from the beginning and no matter which company tried to make it good and proper, there's only so much you can do for a bad SoC. The 870 was a much better SoC in terms of consistency.

But the devices which came after it, were cooler than it.
Like u can see sd 888 touches just 40°c here.
So yeah, with new devices we will have better optimization and better thermals but yeah will still be hottest chip of the year, bcz others chip will also be optimised.

Sd 865 both peak performance and sustained performance is same.
Suppose on GFX bench Manhattan e3.1 1080p,
      Sd 865 scores 85 fps @ 4w.
Sd 888 does scores 115 fps @ 8 watts but since it won't sustain 8 watts on wildlife stress test so it will throttle to 4 watts and at 4 watts it scores 90 fps.
( Note in tests it was seen samsung s21 ultra actually deliberately throttled even further to 3.5w and scores were just 80 fps. AnandTech).
Now coming to cat in the park. Sd 8 gen 1.
If it scores peak 175 @ almost same budget of 8.5 watt, then its sustained performance @ 4 watt will be also high and if u know about power and performance curve, u will see sd 8 gen 1 will score 110 fps @ 4 watt, which will be 25-30 % higher than both sd 865 and sd 888.
Btw for comparison, apple a14 scores 135 @ 7 watts and sustained performance is 105 @ 4 watts.
      I don't know about A15.
But yeah clearly it will be better than this.
But gaming is not just about GPU, half of it is CPU too.
And u don't need whole cpu there. U need only 2-3 cores.
Thats where A15 destroys andriod clowns.
Bcz a15 small effienct cores can sustain scores of 1100-2200 @ just 1.2w-2.4w.
While as andriod small scores are useless for PUBG and GI and it has to use mid cores and they don't fare well.
Bcz for same scores of 1200-2400 on sd 8 gen 1, it will consume 2.5w-6w.

In a year's time, I won't be surprised that the cpu will short cct with the need of a complete motherboard replacement.
It is a well known fact that excessive heat destroys semiconductor structures causing unwanted current to flow in opposite directions.
Also, It is quite simple to make a cpu look great by clocking it up. The problem is if it can handle the extra stress. The A15, 5 core bionic is clocked at 3.23 Ghz and barely reaches 34°c. Why, because Apple releases true finished quality and well tested products irrelevant of the competition. That is WHY their prices are higher apart from the very expensive stainless steel frame.
Hope Qualcomm does not take Samsung exynos route in releasing half finished products, now even in software.

The SOC shud throttle off instead of going behind performance and risking the battery explosion. 61C on the outside means 90-100+c inside the core. It's not really about saving money but about producing enough chips. Dimensity 9000 devices will either be regularly out of stock or there will be very few phones with it.

We can't expect to cool these phone passively anymore, a slab of aluminum doesn't cut it to stay at 100% performance. You'll need a thermal electric cooler which is what I use. And you'll get the whole performance.

I reckon the 8Gen1 uses thermal throttling as a profile manager. It has explosive speed to get a task done asap however if it is say a gaming session, or something that requires sustained performance, the heat causes the cores to downclock and doing so it puts them in a much more efficient performance window.
It is very telling however that the likes of the blackshark gaming phone went with the 870 and based on the results above for sustained performance and efficiency I see why. I also see why the last gen phones using the 888 aren't completely obliterated by the 8 Gen 1 devices in real world scenarios.
Another talking point is the use of 7xx chips over the 7gen1. I have yet to see a phone that has opted for the 7gen1 chip which may come down to price, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a performance choice too.

You can see the worst four efficient chips are all from Samsung fabs, from the Exynos to the Tensor and SD8 Gen 1! Thankfully most consumers are unaware that they are receiving poorly efficient chips otherwise these phones would rightly fail in sales. For most users that do not play games the SD8 Gen 1 should be okay but for gaming fans, wait for a Dimensity or the TSMC SD8 Gen 2. If you live in a cold country the SD8 Gen 1 phones will be a boom as handwarmers and would be a good choice, but in tropical regions the SD8 will be useless.

I have a Note 20 Ultra and was considering getting an S22 Ultra (Hong Kong import as I live in the UK) - But this is a real concern. It seems that for CPU, they just bumped the frequency to unreasonable clocks, using way too much power and gaining about 15C over the 865, for very little improvement in performance (which means, like with desktop hardware, they're running it beyond optimal performance per watt, essentially throwing huge voltage and wattage at it to gain a few % in benchmarks)
The CPU side lets it down. I'd have actually preferred to get the same score as an 888 on CPU and see the GPU boost, and them just market the GPU 40% increase over "last gen" and list CPU as "on par" with the 888 and run it at 2.8Ghz, saving 10 - 15c and a lot of power.
So now I'm stuck. Keep my Note 20 Ultra, or get a Exynos 2200 model of the S22 Ultra? Or be patient and see if the Gen 1 ends up being more stable in "release" hardware of a higher standard. Moto are not know for decent cooling

The problem is these chips don't even have a freaking fan gets only comparitively hot while a massive desktop CPU has ten thousand fans and still remains hot. To miniature the size is the biggest hurdle in this system.
