Your videos have changed our lives! THANK You for showing us the REAL LIFE and not just successes. You have changed our relationship with our pup and the way we handle difficult situations with her. We are so grateful for your videos!!
We were able to train our pup in a couple of weeks but it took a team of 4 and when the kids (2) were off school (summer). We did shifts and she was placed in a crate at night with the nocturnal teen checking on her once in a while; carrying her from the crate to outside when she was seating up. She did her business and back in the crate to sleep; no talking no playing. During the day one person was assigned to watch her closely and would take turns so no one would get tired. We placed bells at the front and back doors and trained everyday with treats. I guess it was easier for us because it was a team effort. We also trained her to ring the bell before every meal to help prevent food aggression.
One tip that gets forgotten is even if they are potty trained, a new environment could create potty accidents again. If I bring my dogs to a family members house, lots of outside time and watching for ques that they might be sniffing for a place to potty in their house and redirecting them outside every time those ques are seen. Lots of attention needed.
Yeah we brought my 7 month old puppy over to my dad's and when he tried to make it out in the morning, he doesn't sleep in a crate there so he could have just peed on the floor but he whined to go out and just couldn't make it as the house was bigger than his normal house
I think it’s great that you show us mistakes, from the dog and from you . So many videos show the trainer “training” a dog who already has it down pat. But when you are at your wits end with a puppy this is not helpful. I like that we see Kona doing things wrong at the beginning and then we can see the process you go through. This is actually much more authentic than watching trainers work with trained dogs. THANK YOU.
The est tip I can give you is bring the puppy out as often as you can. Watch out for circlinh and sniffing. It's unusual to have trouble to train a cavalier king charles but it took me three and a half months to potty train my last dog. Also what helps is the spray with enzymes in it that neutralizes the cent we can't smell. Even after thorough cleaning there's a cent left behind that we can't smell and the puppy will tend to find that spot most times.
I forgot to say that when you bring the puppy out give them lots and lots of praise when they go to the toilet outside. Don't punish them for going inside either. Always give them about ten minutes in case they want to go poo and pee. When my puppy is after peeing I give her about five minutes more just in case she wants to poo too. Also don't rush to bring them inside when they're finished. Let them explore and play for a few minutes. If you rush to bring them in when they are done they might think they are being punished. If you can give the puppy s treat immediately after going to the toilet outside. If you follow my advise you should hopefully have a trained puppy really fast. It only took two days for me to get my puppy 95% potty trained by doing what I advised to do here. In the past two and a half weeks she's only had six accidents which were my fault.
Ok im not understanding why my pup is going pee inside the house. He is GREAT in his kennel, he will definetly let me know he has to go. Outside he does GREAT, he even goes #2 in the same general area. He NEVER goes #2 inside. He likes to spend time in a covered patio right outside my back door. Im trying 2 transition him to spend more time inside. Once I put him inside he does good for about 30mins then out of nowhere he just goes #1. Yes I'm watching him m have a leash on him indoors. He literally doesn't give me much of signs like sniffing, going in circles or tail straight up. He just stops what he's doing n goes, hardly even squats down either. Heck he has peed twice on himself while lying belly down n legs spread out playing with a toy. What am I doing wrong or why is he doing that? Many times he pees and within 10 mins he does it again. Plz help!!
I just got my dog dog yesterday! He's a boy and is a 2 month old golden retriever. He is very easy to teach because when we took him to our friend, our friend said that they already trained him a little bit like sitting, by saying quiet and he becomes silent. Golden retrievers are very smart, my dog already knew where to potty.
It's really heartwarming to see the puppy start to catch on. And when he's training Inertia she always has a big doggy smile, like it's not hard work at all. Really love these videos!
It was the opposite for me. I had to leave my month old puppy alone for four hour periods of time for a few days in October, and he never ever went inside even though I had everything set up for him in case he had to go. I got him a puppy grass patch, he had pads, but refused until I got home to take him out during my lunch and after work. He just stands at the door when he has to go and we go downstairs. ❤️ Moving into my first home on the fourth and will be setting up a doggy door for him as well as his own separate side lawn for when we're at work during the day because the yard is so big. Hopefully, he'll catch on just as easily. 🤞Thank you for the videos!!
My dog (9 y/o) has trained us to let her out whenever she stands at the back door, or knocks at the door. She’s also teaching our 14 week puppy to do the same thing haha. We’ve been potty training her by taking her out every time she wakes up from a nap, twenty minutes after eating, after playing, hourly when she’s awake, and before we think she’ll be excited (before a guest comes) and whenever she starts sniffing. Her training has been going amazingly thanks to your videos.
My dog caught on surprisingly quick. He's still learning what is the best way of alerting me to the fact that he needs to go potty. But he definitely knows by know that he's not supposed to do it in the house which is so amazing.
These videos have helped refresh my memory so well! I first started watching you when I got my now 4 year old golden retriever. We’re getting a golden doodle puppy in a week and a half and I’ve been binging all of your videos to help me prepare!
It's a relief to see a video where the puppy is not a perfect learner and can be 3 months old and still have to learn! My puppy was super anxious ans scared of the outside when I first got him so all the perfect videos of 8 weeks old puppies confident and loving the outside world, learning in 5 days how to potty outside, were completely useless to me.
Just got a 8wk GSD puppy this Christmas and your videos has been a great help in training my puppy and to troubleshoot her issues. Thank you for creating these videos!
Thanks 4 this video... By now I have failed more than I've succeeded @ potty training... I'm getting frustrated. I feel like my house isn't clean anymore & smells like 1 big bathroom telling our puppy it's ok to go anywhere. On top of that he's learning more bad behaviors faster than I can learn how to train him cuz it takes time for me to learn these new training techniques too... Dog trainers make it look so simple. Your the 1st to show all the mistakes as well as successes so even tho I like give up & feel I made a huge mistake in thinking we could handle a puppy, I will keep trying. TY for making this video. I appreciate it.
Your videos are the only thing I look forward to in quarantine. I know it sounds silly but life isn’t great at the moment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
thank you so much for this video. I was also encouraged by early successes (my puppy successfully using his litterboxes). The accidents became fewer and fewer, and then there was a relapse. I felt like such a failure. Great to see it even happened to you!
I can't thank you enough for this video I start training my puppy for a week now I was having a great first couple days with potty training and for the past 2 days I have fail I was so sad until I watch your video I feel confidence now that not everything it's lost and I can turn thinks around. thanks
Hi Zak. My family and I got a new puppy a few months ago and before we even took her to a professional trainer, she learned how to sit, stay and more thanks to your videos. Thank you so much!
Zak, these videos are amazing even if you make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes, but you never give up and soon Kona will soon be potty trained in no time, just never give up and try your best.
Love ya Zack, love ya tons. You're an angel for doggos and we need more people like ya. All I can do is wish you and your cause all the best in the world. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Been watching all your videos to prepare for my first puppy! Just picked him up yesterday and im so thankful for your tips and tricks! I hope my little Bumi will be as good as your dogs are!
Thank you for making these videos! I’m doing a school project on some dog things that some owners don’t know about and the only source I’m using is your videos!
Thank you 😊 for this great video! I learned so much that will bring my puppy to be the best Australia Heeler that she can be. I’ll look forward to the next 3 weeks. 👍🏼🐕I hope the weather cooperates as we live in chilly 🥶 ❄️ snowy ⛄️ Indiana.
I got a Cavalier King Charles puppy two and a half weeks ago. Within two days I had her following me outside to go to the toilet. She's had the occasional accident here and there. About five or six accindents but she's started showing me that she wants to go out now. For the first week I was bringing her out once an hour then for a few days I started bringing her out every two hours. With the past week and a half she only wants to go out every three hours though. But I bring her outside whenever she wants to go out and wait about ten minutes to make sure she's done. This isn't my first puppy though. I had a cavalier king charles for ten and a half years up to June 2020. So the experience of having her has helped me train the puppy.
My brother got a husky last Christmas that I potty trained, but it wasn't this hard. I accidentally taught my older dog the outside bell thing because there were bells on the door handle when I would let him out. He heard the bells enough that he started ringing the bell on his own when he wanted out.
I live in the upper unit of a condo and have a 8 week golden retriever - potty training is difficult and I hope I give him the life and freedom he deserves
I'm at the other end of the spectrum and my wits end with two of my dogs marking. They go in and out all day and they'll mark no matter how many times I thwart them. The last two days they did it twice. I've tried everything (their sister is a graduate of your training series) to no avail. I'm chasing my tail and I'm exhausted. I would love it if you could touch on this in a future episode.
Potty training went well for my collie. In probably 2-3 months her accidents went down to about once per week, and she's been fine now for a bit over a year. She is also my first dog so she is the first dog I ever tried to potty train.
Thanks for posting this. We have been struggling with our 16 week old puppy with potty only in the evenings. I’m not sure what is off but we’re continuing to trying to figure it out. She’s super smart but something seems to be off in the evenings. She will go out every 15-30 minutes and come right in and pee on the floor.
Our breeder did a great job getting our puppy started. We've run into two unique issues and one normal one: 1. We live in the north, it's freezing cold here and the puppy doesn't like being outside. That led her to refusing to go and having accidents moments after you took her back inside. She figured out that going potty means she gets to go back inside and now she's pretty prompt about it. 2. We live in an apartment complex and the sight of people or other dogs sets her off and then she refuses to go. We're working on socializing her to people and getting her into obedience classes will hopefully turn this around. 3. The normal issue is that although she can usually go 1-2 hours without going out (and completely overnight), in the late afternoon/evening she processes most of her urine and can need to go out every 30 minutes. If she's interacting or playing then just like a human child, she doesn't notice she needs to go until it's too late and gives you NO sign that she needs to go. To her credit, it's pretty clear that, like all dogs, she PREFERS not to go to the bathroom in her living space. So we'll get there. I've used the bells with my dogs in the past and am working on training her to use them so she can give us better signals. I will warn viewers that dogs will straight up use them to go outside if that's what they want, even if they don't have to go. So they're best for people who have their dog on a consistent exercise regimen or they'll be ringing them all day to get you to take them outside.
My four month old puppy Wallace has just started going to the door when be needs to go. I'm so thankful that he's communicating when he needs to go instead of just peeing on the carpet!
Thank goodness Im not the only one making these mistakes 😂 Zak, can you please do a video about puppies interacting with others while on a walk? I really want my puppy to socialize but he always barks like crazy while playing!
This video came at the perfect time. My puppy was doing so well but then he started to pee everywhere inside. He literally peed right in front of me on the floor when he usually will try to hide and do it
Hi Zak I am getting a border collie puppy soon and I was watching some of your old videos with inertia, and I saw that you would not let here go any where near any parks because she could have gotten a disease, I have another do at home and was wandering if my new dog and the dog I already have could they play together. Even know my new puppy does not have all of his vaccinations yet.
My dog was really interesting with potty training. He got that he had to pee outside really fast and didn't need to go at night after about a week (he didn't cry or anything at night). But it took him MONTHS (like half a year) to grow out of his baby bladder and hold it longer than 1-2 hours. So I still needed to go out all the time.
I'm dealing with this now. My puppy is 97% good with poop, but that bladder. We live in a town house and he's confined to the basement as we train. I was taking him out every hour, however, we are in winter now. I switched to 2 hrs and he was doing well. Then I'll take him out and he'll pee 10 minutes later, or twice in the next 30!! It gets frustrating at times. He only holds it longer when he's sleeping. I need help!
Does someone know where he has got the treat bag? Looks super nice to use in training! I have a lot of problem with the one I'm currently using. I'm also so thankful to have access to these videos for free. It is a blessing to have this free education, thanks Zak!
Thanks for yet another great video! 🙏🏼 For those of us who are city dwellers snd don’t have immediately access to an outdoor space that looks that fun, but DO have a patio space they can go on, how do we entice them to ring the bell? Kona’s positive reinforcement was going outside...?
Kona was so good with the bells. My puppy attacks the bells like they are the best toy ever. Do I just let her get it out of her system or do I wait and try again later?
Oh my goodness this is my puppy coming up to 10 weeks doing exactly what your puppy was doing started off well then accidents I hate to say it I have to have more patience thank you for this video
Hi, I just got my 9 week old puppy 3 days ago and she seems to already know how to go outside but I'd still like for her to get used to using puppy pads. Do I let her cry until she goes on them? Or will that mess up her being used to going outside? Someone please help ;___;
I'm curious what you think about those speech buttons used for communicating with dogs and cats, like for example using a 'potty' button, instead of the bells :) Would you use those types of buttons in your training sessions?
Ha! I had to set a 45 min timer and take Walter out whenever it went off. He didn't fully understand until I caught him in the act and picked him up in the middle of business to go to the grass...
We have a new puppy we are working with. She has been doing fairly well with going to the door when she needs to go. The main issue is her going in her crate when left alone for any amount of time. In fact, she will poop in her crate and roll around in it like it doesn’t bother her at all. I have never had a dog that consistently pooped in the crate and didn’t seem to bother them. Any suggestions?? She is such a great pup other than this one problem.
Help! My mini schnauzer puppy will be coming home mid February. Right now it’s cold and snowing. How do you train a new pup on cold winter weather?? If I pick him up in the middle of an accident, I won’t have time to bundle him up. What should I do??
We’re did you get the bells I really want to train my American Eskimo pup I’ve watched your vids and that’s why she learned sit down and shake thank u Zak
It took about 12 mos to potty train my female doodle. She had a uti so we got off to a rough start. Pooping was no problem. But peeing, I have to say it was 12 mos before I was completely comfortable with her potty training. So don't give up people. Keep at it!
Thank you so much zac!!! I didn’t know kona was going through these issues!! I thought my dog doesn’t poop in the house anymore but she does pee. I thought she was doing well cause she went a week accident free but then it went downhill. (Btw we r pee pad training her bc we live on an apartment)
My wife and I are both RNs that work 12-13 hour shifts 3x a week. We’re fortunate enough to work the same days, so the days we have off we can take our new puppy outside whenever we need to. My question is, can we “cross train” our dog to pee on a puppy pad when it’s available (the days that we work) and pee outside when it’s not available (the days that we’re off)
My Border Collie was doing so well.... then took a step back. My mistake was taking it for granted she would progress like the many other collies I've trained. They are individuals and it has been a few years since I've trained a new pup. It's all on me, not her. This video reminded me I need to train and be patient.
Loving the puppy survival guide which has really helped with all aspects of training our new puppy. She is also doing really well with her potty training but I am curious about overnight? So far we have allowed her access to some potty pads in a pen area next to her crate overnight but I’m wondering when and how we can faze this out. Do we just go for it and shut her fully in her crate overnight? We usually take her out last thing at around 10pm and then again at 6am but she is still using the pads overnight. She is now 14 weeks old.
Zak I would really love to know what training pouches you’d recommend! I haven’t heard you talk about them in your videos! Looking for the best one to use with my new pup!!! Thanks!! Love the video! We’ve been working on potty bells too!! So helpful!!! ❤️❤️

I accidentally taught my older dog the outside bell thing because there were bells on the door handle when I would let him out. He heard the bells enough that he started ringing the bell on his own when he wanted out.
This is how to do it!
Kona is getting so big!
I would love a video of training while owner is working. I work 10 hour days and don’t have all day to teach our Luna.
Good tips thank you
Potty training went well for my collie. In probably 2-3 months her accidents went down to about once per week, and she's been fine now for a bit over a year. She is also my first dog so she is the first dog I ever tried to potty train.
8 week old puppy, January in Ontario Canada and potty training. Fun!
We've run into two unique issues and one normal one:
Mine does her business both indoor and outdoor.
My four month old puppy Wallace has just started going to the door when be needs to go. I'm so thankful that he's communicating when he needs to go instead of just peeing on the carpet!
That’s great!
@@sherylgim8906 Thanks!
Thank you so much Zak! Love it!
Thank goodness Im not the only one making these mistakes 😂
Zak, can you please do a video about puppies interacting with others while on a walk? I really want my puppy to socialize but he always barks like crazy while playing!
My 2 month old puppy is learning a lot of stuffs.. thanks to you
My 9 week old Golden is using the bells to go outside, even though he has just been. Also a favorite tug of war toy. ;)
This video came at the perfect time. My puppy was doing so well but then he started to pee everywhere inside. He literally peed right in front of me on the floor when he usually will try to hide and do it
Make sure there is no medical issue such as a bladder infection etc before proceeding with the training.
I have a 12 week old husky shepherd mix and your videos are helping me out so much thank you
Do you think you could make a video talking about how you should name your dog I'm really struggling to come up with a name for my border collie
maybe a Aboriginal name might suit her ;)

Great videos
Glad you think so!
Your videos are so helpful I got a golden doodle puppy which is 4 months and your a great help
Oh! The xtra tuff boot! Lol I need one of those we are in Alaska! Enjoying these videos btw they’re great!
The right video on the right day....just when you think "we have this rhythm, he changes the music. ; )
Do I just let her get it out of her system or do I wait and try again later?
ugh. Kona's so cute ur so lucky to get to train her
You are a lot of help while I am trying to persuade my parents to get me puppy!
Thanks for uploading this video my dog is already potty trained
Oh my goodness this is my puppy coming up to 10 weeks doing exactly what your puppy was doing started off well then accidents I hate to say it I have to have more patience thank you for this video
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEOS!!
What breed is Inertia and Kona?
Hi, I just got my 9 week old puppy 3 days ago and she seems to already know how to go outside but I'd still like for her to get used to using puppy pads. Do I let her cry until she goes on them? Or will that mess up her being used to going outside? Someone please help ;___;
I'm curious what you think about those speech buttons used for communicating with dogs and cats, like for example using a 'potty' button, instead of the bells :) Would you use those types of buttons in your training sessions?
Good question
looking forward to ep14
What a great video, thanks!
Adorable as any little baby can be!
My puppy 72days bites us alot in aggressive manner what can i do?!!
Our Cavalier puppy does not want to go on the pads at all and it's useful sometimes. How do I teach her that? We also have accidents in the house.
Thank you, thank you, thank you🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 my Chello is going to do wonderful, I know it ❤❤❤we will keep trying
This is so helpful
I wish I can loan out my mini aussie pup to Zak for a few weeks to train. It would help me and give him content for his channel :-) a win win 😁😁
Just got a heeler/German Shepard mix! Let’s see if this will help😊
Thank you
Great video 👍👍👍
