  • Pivot from the elbow
Wait for opposite (recovery arm side) to give you some rotation, to roll into catch
    Fingers point subtly down
Hand travels down and under elbow, to make a shorter stronger leaver
    Anchor and press body forwards

If you extend / reach over the water, it will often cause hyper extension, and instability. The rib cage pops out, the pelvis is in the wrong place. Extension under the water still needs to be controlled and come from the scapula, with limited trap engagement

Short and to the point. I like it! The emphasis on being patient really struck a chord with me.

Hello, very good advice, then when the arm enters the water and we stretch them, once in the water we have to give it a little more stretch to make the grip with the elbow high.
    thank you

Thanks for sharing, really great tips. I have a question about rolling into the catch. Assuming a 2-beat kick, should we coordinate the catch with the kick? I am not sure if that would delay the stroke o it is good timing? Should we emphasize one kick and catch timing rather than kick and hand entry?

Think about getting some 'shape' to the arm first, that's where the slight delay might occur, rather than ripping into a forceful pull. That shape includes early vertical forearm, shortening the lever, hand under elbow.... while you wind up your flick. So the power part of the kick and catch then fire... most powerful part of propulsion and catch is front third, to half; do not enter into a 'push' at the back. Reduce the effort and transition into a smooth recovery - for the next revolution. Think of a car travelling in 5th gear..... the most fuel economy, quiet engine, fast speed... due to high rev, but also high gear! Happy swimming!
