Global Triathlon Network my fav.drill lately is a single paddle swim(one hand normal the other with a paddle on), varying the hands each lap. And the finish drill; leading hand forward, body rolled to side, while upper arm is stuck to the body, the front arm is pressing back and returning back to the 6 o clock position down(like a triceps press). Pufff I hope it's clear
As a swimming coach, I'd like to point out that your presenters have terrible catches. They bend the elbow too late and then don't keep a high elbow through the pull
Namaste and thank you to both of you. I find your videos helpful. I am 35 yrs old and learning.. It's too hard for me to take out my mouth to breathe. Hopefully, I will learn. I just can't figure out what I am doing it wrongly. A day, I will learn for sure. Thank you guys :*
fist swimming over front sculling over dog swimming! good swim week topic :) i'm looking for tips how to increase the speed/power during the pull end phase :)
Hi. I’ve just started swimming again, but I’m only using ‘my’ version of the breaststroke ( I’m not too good at timing my arms with my legs,if I’m being honest). I would love to be able to do the crawl properly, but I can’t seem to time the strokes with breathing ( not drinking half the pool). Any tips please,as it may save the lifeguard a job. All the best.👍🏾🏊🏼♂️
How do you breathe with the front scull drill, I try this drill and it's difficult, bcause I don't have a snorkel. Should I just lift my head straight up or move it to one side? I did the first one and my body arches a lot, so I dont now if that is good or what, I'm new in this and learning by myself, please help, thanks!!

In the early 70s, Mark Spitz, (and coaches) scientifically proved that an open hand, or cupped hand, pulled the same amount of water. It was determined that when the fingers were comfortably spread, or open slightly, captured water as effectively as cupped, with less effort.
Definitely guilty of over-extending the glide as well, and I'm working on that. I also recently became aware of a hitch in my catch immediately after taking a breath. During the glide my elbow drops, putting on the brakes. Then in the catch my hand is rotated maybe 30 degrees, causing me to lose the water on the pull. Still working out the root cause, but probably has to do with breathing technique more than anything. Needless to say, plenty of opportunities for improvement in this pool...
What worked for me is, to take the arm down at an angle 20-30 degrees relative to the water surface while still extending the arm to catch the water. Because if the arm goes down, sth else goes up (Archimedes Principle), and what goes up is your hips and legs, which cause the drag. Also make sure to breath to the side otherwise your head above the water, pushes your legs down
Matt Dion While going into glide try to rotate your palm slightly around middle finger axis so that your thumb side of the palm is lower than your pinky side. That will prevent the elbow drop.
@@ludovitrapos1349 comment posted 4 years ago, but just made me realise I'm rotating my hand the other way (thumb higher than pinky) during the glide and is so obviously making my high elbow catch a lot harder now I think of it! Thank you!
I’ve just started front crawl this winter. My cyst has is okay but could do with improvements. The are I find so challenging is the breathing. Breathing is hard.

If your looking for a video idea, maybe a video on training through injury. Obviously you are not doctors but as athletes, I am sure there are some trade secrets. Maybe a list of what to do and what not to do. I am currently a peroneal tendonitis sufferer and any tips would be greatly appreciated. I think Mark and Heather are fantastic presenters of the old school natural British TV style and think the content here is fantastic!
Ben Stanton, coping with injury is never easy and certainly something we will look to cover in the future. If you're interested do check out the video on how to deal with Shin splints for an insight into a different type of injury. Best of luck with your recovery.
That's great and all but how do I breathe?? When I do this and try to breathe by moving my head to the side, I generally just get a lot of water in my mouth making me wanna not breathe in as much, and I move my head out of the water too much, meaning I slow down a lot (because I'm not as streamlined anymore and I can't take big breaths)
Yes, you're right. To a degree though. I always find it best to advise people to swim with their fingers together to begin with. They should not be squeezed against one another, just lightly touching. Then it allows the swimmer to find the most comfortable and best position themselves
I think there's a difference between training for long distance and short distance. These techniques are more suited for triathlons I guess, I'm not sure though.
But isn't it more efficient to stretch your front arm _above_ water, and submerge it only already extended? Air is less dense than water, so you won't be slowing yourself while doing forward motion with your arm.
Dzmitry Lazerka Don’t understand it either but it is better. Try it out in the pool by staying still and laying on ur stomach. Extend one arm out near the surface and see how ur body sinks. Then try extending your arm out around a feet below the surface and see how your body stays afloat.
good video, good presenters, pretty complicated topic … swim technique should always begin with body position … a ‘good catch’ if body position is not hydrodynamic [streamlined in water] simply means pulling a larger surfaced area object [athletes body] through the water ... which will always be more ineficient than pulling a more streamlined athletes body through the water … these ‘drills’ ‘work’ because presenters body position is good.
What is your favourite drill for front crawl technique? Let us know in the comments below 👇
Individual Medleys. Wait wrong. Butterfly. No that’s not it. Catch-up drills.
Global Triathlon Network my fav.drill lately is a single paddle swim(one hand normal the other with a paddle on), varying the hands each lap. Single Arm Stroke, Single Arm with Kickboard, Fist Catch, Catch Up Drill & Tarzan Drill all have helped with me with the catch.
ISO arm drill with or without the kick board... Second would be Kick drills on your side with your arm out front.
As a swimming coach, I'd like to point out that your presenters have terrible catches. They bend the elbow too late and then don't keep a high elbow through the pull
I'm learning this so the lifeguard doesn't think I'm drowning whenever I'm trying to swim.

So they swim for you it’s a life hack

Appreciate these drills, simple explanations. Swimming requires such precise technique.
This was really helpful. I've been sticking with breaststroke and now feel ready to push myself more so hoping this will do that! Thanks 😊
Can you do a video on breathing timing with sighting?
dont u know how to braeth hahahha u suck
I've never seen more natural presenter than Heather! Like omg, is she even real. Goals.
And that suit is easy to watch.
I found this very useful, thank you. Great presenting skills and some very practical suggestions of things I can now try.

Thanks for a great video, very helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it! Which drill do you think is most useful?
Global Triathlon Network front scull drill I think though single arm drill is good but I struggle with it 😜
Thanks , good
Awesome video sir jii
Thank you I needed this ! I just started swim training seriously, aiming for my first 70.3 in a year ... possibly a few aquathons in between 😁
Sounds like good timing! Which 70.3 have you entered?
Global Triathlon Network I'm moving to Australia next May so I was thinking Sunshine Coast 70.3 if they have it, or Cairns 😁
Thank u so much

Loving your video, keep it up just one question, whats the best way to warmup before a triathlon ( roller, exercices, or other)?
RoVer_40 keep an eye out as we are making a video on this very soon.
My hands (alternative) stays on the water a bit more during the pull phase and it just destroys the coordination and posture..What to do??

I cant seem to keep my.feet up and I cant get head position right and then I panic and bring head back... and sink😕help!!! Any advice
Hi, I have the problem that sometimes I get water in my nose in the free style. Is it normal or is there something to correct?
You forgot to mention to keep your elbow high which is the most important part of the catch.
They forgot to actually KEEP their elbows high. I saw them dropping the elbow all over the place.

Liking this....i need to dial in my stroke.

what swimming googles do you use in this video....? I take it they are highly recommended....? Great video guys :)
At what point I need to start to bend my arm? 30 degrees?
Oooh, great topic. Almost as great as Mark's epic bike sock tan lines @ 2:45.
Matt Dion That's why I always wear short running socks for cycling.
😂
I tend to lose my balance when I flip over to one side, (my right side), to breathe to the left. Is there any way to fix that?
I dont get it . should we twist the wrist downwards when entering the hand in water?

how'd it go?
Guess the person is still submerged?
Are you still swimming?
Hi it is Lucinda please come to stoksley North Yorkshire swimming pool at 7.30 pm and teach me in the swimming pool how to do the front crawl please
I wish there was a video teaching me how to breathe in and how to breathe out enough in order to breathe in.
I basically kinda imagine myself swimming in a pool of slime, me trying break free from all that stickiness 😆
