    In addition to being a successful golf coach, Sam Golden is the inventor of the innovative and unique MNML golf bag featured in this video. The lightweight bag is made from waterproof micro-suede and includes a phone pocket for recording your golf swing, solar panel and cord for charging your phone on the course, a thermal cooler pocket, single-dual strap configuration, retractable stand, and magnetic (zipperless) closures. You can find the bag at www.mnmlgolf.com and on Instagram @MNMLgolf
    I’ve known and followed Sam Goulden for many years. So, it was a blast to get to spend some time with him at his beautiful Manhattan Beach location and film a few videos talking about his Square to Square Swing Method - a simple way to swing the club that produces solid contact, a forward low point, and consistent results.
    In this video, Sam takes us through the setup and backswing pieces that can help you keep the face as square to the plane as long as possible in the backswing and set you up for an effortless downswing.

    This has become my go to shot for my irons...might be the most valuable thing I've learned from this channel...I used my full swing still with my mid to longer irons...but man, this thing is money from like 8 iron down...compression great, comes off low and straight...roll it right up to the green...I usually only use my full swing now when I feel like I'm in a situation where I think I can stick it close and there's no trouble...but if irs a super guarded green or if ur just not hitting it well, its great...im.telling you guys...LEARN THIS METHOD...so valuable

    I have been very upset with my game. Totally lost confidence due to the occasional bi-lateral shot that would come out of nowhere. I stumbled onto this video, watched it, went to the range and for the first time in two years I’m back. Killing it very straight, very consistent.

I tried this this morning on the range, i hit approxiamately 100 shots, in the afternoon i went out on the course - i hit the ball 10 meters longer than before and 100% straighter this is right up my alley so thanks for one more perfect videos!

    Great video Eric. I have followed Sam a long time and have him to thank for first learning how to compress a ball. His method is so simple, it is easy to discount as not possible. I remember the first time I performed it successfully I could not believe the power you can generate with such a simple motion. For me it was a lightbulb moment, wow that’s what a well hit shot should feel like. You are both great teachers. Good luck to both of you.

    I started this about a year ago when I “lost” my swing. I used my driver to my wedges. 4:30 to 7:30, them on to 3:00 to 9:00, then onto full swing. I keep my swing more vertical now.
    Good process.

    A fellow golfer at the range yesterday saw that my swing was “flat” and causing me to hook the ball and not make solid contact. He showed me this exact method and proved to me that with solid contact and consistency, you can effortlessly hit around 140 yards with the Pitching wedge. Straight and on line as well. Can’t wait to practice this this afternoon at the range!

    Great vid. Thank you.
    I have a memory of Dick Altums book The Square to Square Golf Swing of 50 plus years ago which advocated, among other things, that the takeaway should include a 'slight' (never defined) curling under of the last 3 fingers of the lead hand to keep the face hooded going back. The method, as I recall, was heavily debunked by golf teachers at that time. I don't recall ever reading in the book, about the 'setting impact alignments and maintaining them' notion - fresh thinking, same name. Thanks for the insight👍👍👍

    New golfer comes for a lesson. Show me the sweet spot on your 9 iron. Now stand like an athlete and put that sweet spot against the ball. Keep pointing the sweet spot at the ball during your backswing and stop when you can no longer do it. The world of slicers has now claimed one less victim. I do this 'start at impact drill' when I lose my way and it resets me immediately. I too am going to steal Sam's sweet spot idea - it's brilliant.

    • @jacobr4558
      @jacobr4558 2 года назад

      You need to swing on an arc so you have to do what is called a "cornering" release. It's not a straight release but it will feel like you are cornering left. Hope that makes sense 😃.
      Another faster could be not being synced up with your turn/arms/wrists. If your body it's turning too fast and you drag your arms=push. The opposite would be if you stop your body you flip the club. You need somewhere in between.

  • @randyunderwood2894
    @randyunderwood2894 4 года назад +2

    it's funny to me watching this cuz this swing is about all i can do. this IS my swing and NOT a "drill".
    what i am working on is smthg you do very naturally with your left side through impact and finish. getting my left hip back there and on the outside of my shoe. i have let that get away from me the last few years. btw...your swing at about 17:30 was one of the best i've seen you do. i bet that felt awesome

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад +1

    More good instruction thoughts! I discovered recently the importance for me to focus on the sweet spot of the club face impacting the back of the ball. Before I always looked at my irons leading edge and would tend to hit fat digging the leading edge under the ball. I found if I focused on the sweet spot contact improved magically. Golf is strange!

    Great video, really like the simplicity of the back to back swing move. I am very excited to try this on the range. It's going to be a challenge to shorten my back swing at least with my hands but as said in the video, it groves the swing and feel for solid contact. hi eric...do you see any negatives to the square to square swing? I ask because of 2 things. one, you said if you are 85 or more on score, then this is non-negotiable. it will help you strike the ball better, which I believe 100 percent. but what about a player who is around 80? would this swing cost someone a little distance and such
    second..pro players I believe do not use this swing, unless I am mistaken. is there something about it that they dont like? again, I'm thinking it might cost a little bit of distance, but I'm not sure.
    thanks again for all the great videos!

      Thanks for the kind words. Your best bet is to find a good coach to work with.....as I can't see your swing I can't say whether YOU should add elements of this or not.
      You want to identify your top 1-3 priorities to improve based on your goals. Then put a specific plan in place with sufficient video/training aid feedback.
      Rinse and repeat. Square to square elements or not.

    Interesting. I used set up like this but then I had various instructors over the years tell me it wasn't the thing to do. My question though would be about weight shift. With this swing, do you start with most of the weight on the left side (impact position) and keep it there throughout the swing or do you shift onto the right side until the top of the backswing, then shift back to the left?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      I would say start centered, stay pretty centered on way back and more slightly toward target on the way through with you MASS...
      Shifting pressure in your feet is different...of course there will be pressure in your feet. to the right and back to the left.

    Great video....I like the idea of square to square and setting up the proper impact position at address. One question though - do the wrists ever hinge? It appears that your wrists were pretty locked in and rigid throughout the swing. If they don't hinge, aren't you losing some power/distance?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 года назад

      Hey Robert!
      They can hinge....don't have to. If you head over to Sam's channel @ Sam Goulden Golf you can see more of his thoughts on this. He doesn't have much hinge and hits it plenty far....because of the other variables (lower dynamic loft/rotation, etc)
      Adding hinge can add speed/distance-yes.

      Glad to hear that, Robert! Yeah...basically same stuff. The more I think of the sport I played most as a child and adult was football (soccer to yanks) the concept of hips and kicking comes as second nature. Because, I try to play golf using natural ability, again my definition; some of the things just don’t click. I’ve watched videos where they say hip rotation and straight line hip movement that makes it looks like rotation. I'm sure I'm missing something, thud is great for a nice reliable stock shot i wanna start going to this more, but I feel way across the line at the top if I turn back too much

      Hey!
      " I dont understand tho, if you maintain that angle won't you go across the line at the top?
      -Nope...not if you dont swing too long...notice hands staying shorter with this.
      "Cause if you keep going back back back and not rotation of the club face how does it lay off/get on plane on top? Or, does this method not require you to go above chest high?"
      -Thats correct-shorter more compact swing length. If you swing too long will go across line-yes.

      -Thats exactly correct. You are not confused here-you are explaining it perfectly :) "IF I turn back too much"
      Just shorten up the swing length with this-thats all :)

      @@CogornoGolf awesome Eric thank you so much for replying thats all I needed to hear...I get the same (actually probably more distance) with this method, lower ball flight, with a shorter swing (assuming cause the face is really delofted), but the compression is freaking sweet and damn if it doesn't go straight...now I hit these types of square to square punchy shots unless I need to go over something its very reliable and repeatable...thanks again for clarifying, shorter swing, too much=across the line...

    Is there any reason you do this on an up slope or is it just visually like that

      I think it's just visually an upslope. It's not meant to be.

    I have a huge problem on keeping my weight centered on the backswing. When I swing back I come off my center. How do I fix this? What drills are out there? Until I do this I will never accomplish the square to square method

    Would the pros not be taking 4° more dynamic loft of than amatuers because they swing faster. An amatuer dynamic loft on a tour pro swing speed would cause their ball to balloon rather than an optimal ball flight.
