In addition to being a successful golf coach, Sam Golden is the inventor of the innovative and unique MNML golf bag featured in this video. The lightweight bag is made from waterproof micro-suede and includes a phone pocket for recording your golf swing, solar panel and cord for charging your phone on the course, a thermal cooler pocket, single-dual strap configuration, retractable stand, and magnetic (zipperless) closures. You can find the bag at www.mnmlgolf.com and on Instagram @MNMLgolf
I’ve known and followed Sam Goulden for many years. So, it was a blast to get to spend some time with him at his beautiful Manhattan Beach location and film a few videos talking about his Square to Square Swing Method - a simple way to swing the club that produces solid contact, a forward low point, and consistent results.
In this video, Sam builds on the setup and backswing pieces from our first video and shows us how his method will set you up for an effortless downswing.
Special thanks to Scott Morgan and The Lakes At El Segundo for allowing us to film while in the Los Angeles area.

Sam is a legend; incredible coach and even nicer guy. When I played routinely four + years ago, his method did more for my game than any other by far. Thanks for having him on.
Love it! He's awesome!
What strikes me the most is that he’s not actively trying to bow the left wrist. That’s because he prepositions his club with shaft lean and comfortable wrists. This basically translates to a strong grip with a focus on rotation. This technique is so simple and effective. Thanks!
Yessir
Eric, your an excellent teacher because you have learned many different golf swings and you can teach them
to fit a golfers physical abilities. I went to the square to square last year after I had a lead wrist injury. Now
I just turn and burn. Thank you for your professional instruction.
Love it, Ray! Appreciate the kind words my friend!
Great videos with Sam Goulden. I came across Sam‘s method a few years ago. Even bought his book about this method. It makes perfectly sense. The reason it didn‘t „click“ with me was due to me not grasping the importance of syncing body pivoting and hands/arms movement. My bad. Seems I have missed some opportunities here.
Sam is great! Hope you enjoyed!
Eric, this all makes perfect sense to me. That is why it is what I have been trying to do for years, but with limited success. I naturally come way over the top while trying to do this and early extend a lot and hit fat and thin a lot. So lately I have been watching lots of instructional videos and everyone talks about the importance of cocking the wrists and releasing the club and all kinds of complicated movements to get the club on the right plane coming down. It’s all mindboggling. I’m a 15 handicap and would like to find some way to improve.
Steve
Hey Steve!
I would genuinely suggest you check out www.cogornogolf.com so you can send in your swing and info about you and I can identify your top priorities to work on and HOW.....stop the guessing and watching random tips....get un-lost :)
Its really the best thing you can do. Clarity. Plan. I'll be there.
@@CogornoGolf Eric,
I really appreciate how you faithfully reply to these messages. Thank you for the suggestion about posting a video of my swing. The problem with that suggestion right now is that I don’t have a swing that I can say is my swing. I have been watching instructional videos and trying what I have been seeing taught and now I am swinging in lots of different ways as I try to do what I am being taught in the video lessons and as I try to find a swing that works. I don’t ever want to go back to what has been my swing for many years because it is dominated by coming over the top and by early extension. Then I saw your video of April 12 titled How To Create Hip Depth And Fix Early Extension - With Mike Malaska and it was revolutionary for my thinking and when I apply this way of rotating my hips for short shots it works great. Now I have hope that I can actually eliminate early extension. But it is not working so well for half swings and I have not tried full swings yet. I think I need to work on new swing ideas more before I show anyone my swing on video unless I am getting ongoing personal instruction with lots of video clips of me trying what I am being taught.
You know what I think....I need to see your swing to really help. Whenever you're ready my friend. All the best!
What I found interesting is how this corresponds to your earlier video "The only two Drills you need for a perfect golf swing takeaway", where you use the alignment rod to pre set up with it on your hip. In both these video's, the hands are in the same position. Not only that, but then the club face stays square to the path on the take way. Great reinforcement. Thanks!
Thanks, Mark!
Your teaching content is unreal, keep it coming man 👌🏻
Thanks, Ryan!
So Eric, this is an older video, so I'm hoping you still read comments. Developing left shoulder/arm pain. Rarely rotate through the shot, though I know I should. Do you think I'm too 'armsy'? Would this swing take some strain off of that front/left shoulder? Yes, let's just say I'm one of those senior golfers that shoot over 90... thanks!
Hey Jeffrey! Could be.....really hard to say any specifics without seeing your swing in person or on video. I'd get together with a good coach/physical therapist should be able to give you specifics. One thing I would look at for sure is rotation...I see golfers with shoulder pain when they dont make full turns in backswing (or downswing) so the shoulder has to overwork to get the club to make a full backing or follow through. Hard to say if this swing style would help or not....find someone good in person to work with or send swings to www.cogornogolf.com so we can help
@CogornoGolf OK! I played 9 yesterday, and while I can't say
my score improved much,
my iron strikes, in particular, were much better. Several solid center face strikes.
Greens in regulation were
33%, fantastic for me!
And my wedge play actually let me put the ball on the green.
I'm going to check into sending you some videos for critique. Thanks so much, Eric. I've watched them all. Yes, I'm a RUclips junkie and you are definitely one of the best.
I have watched Sam Goulden before, but just did not learn from his videos like I did when you broke it down, and that's no knock on him. That's just saying I'm a little hard-headed and your method reaches me more. Thanks again!
another great video; and probably the coolest bag ever seen, but functional and practical.
Thanks, Jim! Agreed! I got one for myself....awesome bag!
Great stuff. Great and simple concept to apply. Can’t wait to try. I’m basically practicing this but thinking about it in this way really helps simplify it.
Thanks, Joe! Hope it helps my friend!
Great stuff...feel a lot of compression with irons...although my miss on a full swing has become a big block vs a hook (I used to flip to try to square it up due to body stalling)...I imagine I'm still stalling but now my face is square instead of flipping, any recommendations for getting through the ball and not stalling my rotation as far as some drills or any videos you've posted that help with rotation through impact this has helped a lot when I take 3\4 and half shots tho, like unbelievably helpful
Hey Mark!
I would really have to see a video of your swing to say for sure what you need to do. The problem with me suggesting a video is Im guessing too much....have to see WHY its happening to really fix it.
Check out www.cogornogolf.com so we can work together and I can help.
Just tried this in my garage. Started with the 1/2 swing. It took a few to get comfortable. Started to feel solid strikes. Went to full swing and it felt like i was crushing it. The sound was incredible. My question is do you do this with your gap and 56 degree wedges? Thanks for the tip.
Thats awesome, Kevin! Glad to hear.
Yes you do.
Do one with a driver also. This fixed every defect. Went from 15 handicap to shooting the last 4 rounds at +3 +6+ 5 +8 ... I do it for the driver to and it’s incredible. So much more power. Only hiccup with the driver is that a hook sneaks in here and there. Mind addressing the cause please. I believe it’s rolling this wrist but will still be good to see
Awesome! I would need to see your swing on video of course to address the cause....too many guesses without seeing. Face getting too closed to path likely or path too far right
@@CogornoGolf thanks man. I posted a 5 iron swing also driver swing. After you made me record it I noticed plenty. I am still rolling my hands on the takeaway opening the club face. I’ve watched all your videos on it. I have been working on it every day.
What I think is my back swing is to wide off the ball causing me to rotate. Maybe turn my shoulders and keep my hands going more toward my hips vs out???? Let me know I’ll tag you. Thank you. Huge fan. Your great
All I can say is this: I've been testing this concept this week. I hit hundreds of balls with my 54 deg sand wedge and 50 degree gap wedge. Setting up at a correct impact position with focus on impacting the back of the ball with the sweet spot I hit powerful effortless shots and gained a consistent 15 to 20 yards on my sand wedge. I don't even have to take a long back swing. Just getting the hands to about shoulder height.
Love to hear that....I'm sure Sam will too!
@@CogornoGolf Did you do a video maybe with Malaska showing impact position and hitting balls from that setup? I can't locate it and it's driving my crazy!
Never mind. I found it. Malaska did it by himself. It's Malaska Golf // Teaching from Impact and Back - Golf Swing Mechanics ruclips.net/video/4tRrnk5htoI/видео.html A good foundation using the hips correctly.
Great video. Thank you. I really need to work on my rotation and using more of my body to square and release the club face vs. using my hands.
Thanks, Vincent! Hope it helps!
Eric, I have been doing this swing all summer, started practicing over winter and it's been golden. I am a 5.5 index and been playing some solid ass golf. Now, all of a sudden I'm hitting some big ass draws and hooks with longer clubs and not even trying, where before I worked the ball at will.....I watched this and try to rotate hard with body but it wont go away...could you ask sam or you tell me a drill. ...I have weakened my grip ....I love the square to square...help a brother out please
Hey Chan!
I would have to see your swing to see WHY its happening to say how to fix.....likely you're clubface is getting too closed OR your club path has moved too far inside out.
Touch base with Sam on his channel or check out www.cogornogolf.com so you can send in your videos and we can help!
Great video. Seems like a great way to simplify the swing to just make solid contact. However is this good for senior golfers?
Thanks! I would say so!
@@CogornoGolf thanks. But would that heavy body driven swing be hard to maintain over time?
I do not think so...all else equal.
Really like this method and have tried sams methods before but struggled a bit
Can’t really see how you get enough power as feel I can’t rotate my body fast enough
How fast do you need to rotate your body
Is there any arm swing at all here?
Hey Jill!
I would suggest touching base with Sam at his channel and he should be able to better guide with this method!
Been working on setting my wrists like this in the back swing ! stuck in the backyard tho can’t wait to try on the range 🙏🏽
Hope it helps!
New to golf and new subscriber. Love the channel! Correct me if I'm wrong, but this method seems to encapsulate many of the elements your other videos lay out. By leaning the shaft forward at address you're more or less "locking" in downward (or bowed) wrist flex which you keep through the entirety of the swing. Also, by simply rotating fully in the backswing without hinging the wrists, you do not need to "un-hinge" in the downswing to shallow the plane. It's already shallowed and you're already in a bowed flex at impact. That said, can you explain the benefits of hinging the wrists in the backswing and THEN flexing/bowing and unhinging to shallow the plane in the downswing? Does the hinging ultimately give you more power. Is that something you should move into with more experience as I notice most tour and low handicappers all hinge.
Thanks, Brandon!
Of course! The first half is "correct" in theory but also of course there are A LOT of micro movements so its not quite that simple.
" That said, can you explain the benefits of hinging the wrists in the backswing and THEN flexing/bowing and unhinging to shallow the plane in the downswing? -Yes I would say speed. Distance potential.
-Should YOU do it? I can't say. I need to see what YOU are currently doing, where you ultimately want to go, etc, etc.
I would love to help you more and answer YOUR specific questions but I need to see your swing and know more about you. Check out www.cogornogolf.com so I can guide!
It seems the right wrist extension, ala Malaska, is critical to the square to square method. Feeling the face is looking at the camera behind you is a helpful thought too.
Definitely!
Really interesting locked in impact position swing. Can you get high launch angles with this technique or does this seem to promote lower traj shots?
Not sure what Sam would say, but I have been using this technique and you can definitely hit high shots by simply adjusting your setup
You can for sure hit high shots.....but I would say it promotes more of a lower trajectory to start.
Of course you could adjust ball position, hand path, lead shoulder tilts, side bends, pelvis extension etc to make the ball go higher
Didn’t hear anything about lower body. Is the focus more on keeping lower body stable and rotating aggressively with lats, chest, shoulders, or is aggressive leg action just as important? Thanks, Eric.
Hey David! I think Sam likes to focus on the big muscle movements of the upper body and let the lower body follow along...
Not right or wrong....have to see what YOU do when you feel things.
Luckly we have about 300 videos on lower body on here to keep ya busy with that part :)
I tried it yesterday and It works really well for the wedges all the way up to the 7i - but for some reason - i can't get teh same ball flight (height) for my 5i. I use single length irons (Edel - which is similar to Sam's).
could be something you utilize more with just short irons then!
I've always thought your hands started neutral..in the middle I guess. would you do this on the range to get that feel, or would you think of actually using it during game play. thanks for all the great videos
Hands inside left thigh. watch second half of this: ruclips.net/video/8TjvCHCAQ0c/видео.html
Always do things on range first. And record your swing so you actually know and are not guessing.
@@CogornoGolf thanks eric..I checked out the video..great checkpoints for set up..
you are right about the video..ill look into the product that you mentioned that records your swing..thanks again
hola!!! la verdad amazing video lo disfrute bastante ansioso de el siguiente material me despido les mando cariños agradecido
Thank you!
Well I guess I been striking my irons incorrectly and controlling the club face completely wrong! Plan to implement these checks to make sure my face stays square the entire swing thank you for this!
Hope it helps, Brian!
How does this work with a hybrid or fairway wood off the deck, and a driver or 3-wood off the tee? Do I need to put a forward lean on the shaft?
Hey Ray!
Most of those adjustments would be done at setup
Ball more forward and more body tilt with those clubs
Not a ton of in swing changes.
Here is more on the ball position and tilt changing per club: ruclips.net/video/sJd-0eEQU0w/видео.html
Here is more on iron vs driver differences in more detail: ruclips.net/video/TJtx-qVSgVU/видео.html
With this swing approach is there any shallowing of the club on the downswing which has been a big emphasis on prior videos.
Yup...should some shallowing in all swing styles....99% at least.
Would be interested to see a close up of right hand wrist bowing or hinge ( which?) from 1st parallel to keep clubface square at top of backswing.
Maybe these will help ya:

More weight appears to be on the front foot at set up, what would you say the distribution is? 60/40? 70/30?
50/50 is cool.....60/40 fine with shorter clubs.....we were hitting PW here I think so little more left ok. I would neutralize that as clubs get longer.
Awesome video!
Thanks, Ray!
I remember a point when I was creaming my driver, looked back on camera and my backswing had gotten really short like this. I didn't like the look of it and went for the more "sexy" 90 degree wrist hinge. Wish I hadn't changed.
Would you say having this little "lag" creates less power?
Hope you get back on track, Stephen.
Would you say having this little "lag" creates less power?
-Nope...youre exchanging wrist hinge (radial deviation) for wrist extension
ruclips.net/video/YwI9tq8J0sc/видео.html
@@CogornoGolf amazing video right there. Thanks for the reference. That was the magic piece for me
Eric what is better square to square method or the Mike Makask method Mike Makask way more simplify way..
Neither better or worse....key is to figure out the 1-3 most important priorities YOU need in YOUR swing/game to improve.
Best to work with a coach to find those, build a plan and monitor the progress.
Check out www.cogornogolf.com Id be happy to help guide!
Thanks Eric for responding to my question could help me with my golf swing I'm a 17 handicap I'm so inconsistent I normally I have little fade not Avery thing is a dead pull left especially with my driver..
I can help everyone. You included.
So would you need to go from a neutral grip to strong grip with this?
Dont NEED to but I think its easier, yes.
If weaker grip just need different wrist angles:

ruclips.net/video/lxyLhDS_UrM/видео.html
Awesome Eric really good!!! Man you are taking it all in bro good for you!!! And us lol ,,, be safe
:) Thanks man!
Will this method impact on your club head speed? If you're relying on your body rotation/turn to hit the ball then surely your club head speed is going to be slower than if you were to release the club head in a more conventional way? My body can't move faster than my arms, hands, etc, and as such will my distances be affected if my arms and hands are passive through the hit?
Hey Nick!
Of course I would have to see YOUR swing on video to say what YOU should do or how it would effect your pattern.
1. I don't think it would have a huge effect on clubhead speed but if you lost speed because of lack of hinge most would GAIN speed from body rotation or GAIN DISTANCE from lower dynamic loft....and probably hit it FARTHER with LESS speed because of the dynamic loft being lower.
2. Maybe you can't move body faster than arms hands because your face is too open....I see that all the time...body reacts to face. Maybe if your face was more square you would move better...
If not play more open face style and pair pieces to that!

@@CogornoGolf
Thanks for the response Eric. Love your vids btw.
I'm certainly intrigued by the simplicity of this method and consistency it could provide. Totally understand what you mean about the body reacting to an open club face, but I'm just more of an arms and hands swinger - very little real power coming from the body, but that's not because of an open face. I feel this S2S method will certainly force me into using my body better.
Thanks to you and Sam. All the best.
Does Sam not have any wrist set at the top of his backswing?
Some....just less!
Any tour players use this technique or is this primarily aimed at novice to intermediate golfers?
I think a Steve Stricker no hinge would be a good example with a Zach Johnson clubface
How far would you go back before you start "going across the line" with those angles
Club just short of parallel at top
It would be nice to have seen about where and how golf clubs fit in bag.
Good idea! I bought one....they fit great! I love the bag
Is he saying that at 1/2 / 3/4 way back the backswing is done? After watching my swing back from videos, I noticed that my hands are very low compared to what I class as the 'ideal top of the backswing position. As I'm getting on in years - 50, I'm finding this position hard to reach. are we saying I should give up this quest? Also, music on the golf course.......would like to hear the comments from members if we ever get back out there!
Hey Iain! The 1/2-3/4 swing is for the drill purposes but most people don't need to go much farther than 3/4 length for irons....especially if you have a good clubface angle for good compression!
I do no know if you should adjust that position or not...I would have to see your swing on video and know more to see. I usually like to see the lead arm about on the same plane as the shoulder line....some below and some above....depends on how you match other parts.
Im cool with music on the course!
Can this type of swing be a little hard on the my back?
All swings are hard on your back from what I know....
looks stack and tiltish, love to see this with driver
From earlier comment...
"Works great with Driver!
Have to make some setup adjustments with ball position and tilt like everyone else.
Check out Sam's channel as he talks more about how he works with players and driver more "
This is for lower trajectory 👍
For sure!
And just I side note...I dont over swing on backswing, as soon as left shoulder is under chin, that is my trigger to bust it...my left wrist is flat ...and I just cant figure it out...when I rehearse it the club is square to swing arc and it was just back and bam...now it is back and hook
Hope you get it sorted my friend!
I'd see this as an excellent drill to get a better pivot but to say the arms and hands are not the biggest power source....not so sure. Consistent yes but in order to hit it long not so much. Otherwise you'd see the longest hitters in the world do it. The closest one I can think of is Zach J with his wedges, and they are no doubt one of the best on tour but he's hardly a bomber :-)
Thanks for the feedback!
both Sam and Eric know there shizle
:) Sam is a great coach and even better guy!
El Segundo? Damn i knew it looked ghetto? Lol. Awesome video and i have ordered a bag . They look sweeeeet. I really love your square to square. Its so easy. I used it yesterday at Troon North . I missed 1 fairway from the tips an shot 2 over.
Loved El Segundo! Cool spot! Glad to hear that...good playing!
I used to live in Redondo Beach! Just messin with ya. El Segundo is cool now. Used to be really bad.

"...Just rotate your body aggressively through..."
So many issues with this sentence alone. Okay if you're 21, and you have an injury-free back. But you won't have that injury-free back for much longer with this swing advice.

Thanks for the feedback!
When I try to hit with locked wrists and just shoulder turn, I sometimes hit a shank. It feels like my upper body gets ahead of the ball and I never release the shot. When I do hit it right out of the sweet spot it feels effortless with fantastic ball flight.
Hope you get it sorted my friend
Eric Cogorno Golf I almost have it, it’s a powerful hit. I just have to remember to start my downswing with my lead shoulder turning out of the way, rather than engaging my hips first. Thanks
the simplest, most consistent swing method.
👊
Thanks for watching!
there is a ton of moe norman techniques in this
We would all love to hit it like him for sure!
Seems like the driver is not going to work too well like this. There has to be some hand/wrist action to be able to get some good distance.
Works great with Driver, Bob!
Have to make some setup adjustments with ball position and tilt like everyone else.
