My observations are that it’s $20 more than a Traxxas TRX4 Sport and more than the Element Enduro, they dropped the forward motor mount and are giving yet another center mounted transmission design (Why?). Axial’s transmissions and which ones which is already confusing. I can do without the dig or 2speed, but they could have just made a simplified forward one. They got rid of the 3in1 ESC receiver combo which is a good idea as you had to drop more electronics and get a receiver if you wanted to upgrade. I think maybe they figured out their clickety mcclackerson forward transmission couldn’t be salvaged
The transmission has been my biggest problem with Axial lately. After using the industry standard for that many years, then all of a sudden abandon it for gizmo stuff.
Associated invented the 3 gear for the RC10 . It's been copied ever since.
I wish Axial had just put a dig unit on the back if the old 3 gear.
I've always said, nothing worse than a bored engineer. ( I'm an engineer)
Been leaning more towards the Element platform lately, they seem to be working on geometry more than gismo tech.
Have fun, man.
- DAMN RIGHT !!!!! 😡...😆😁👌WELL SAID !!!
I use the standard transmission that came with it in my SCX10 III. I have the dig and two speed disabled. I've never had a problem with it.
Body sucks for $400
Do a budget build off with SBG. 👍
That's like a dirty word! So much work!!!
they still missed the price point imo still more expensive than an enduro or a trx-4 sport. I hope they make another builders kit and keep it around the same price point as the first one.
That bumper needs a bit more "Break-In"
stupid tires, shame...
Interesting on the gearing! I wish they had included that info in the manual. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting, Josh.
...Josh's "poor back" !!! 😉😂
Thats why we have Josh lol
when you say re-gear on minute 12:31, what gear part is used for that? how is that done?
I want to modify to straight axles but cant find any instructions for gear mod
Yes it’s ugly as sin lol BUT It’s supposed to be cheap guys ! It’s for beginners just to get you going to get your foot in the door!
Thats definitely the goal!
If they were trying to budge the TRX4 sport as a budget option they missed by a huge margin. Its $20 more expensive and has no where near the aftermarket support as the TRX4. Honestly if they would have stuck with the old 3 gear trans with straight axles this would have been a better sell.
But it seems to perform better than a TRX4, like for like, aside from the annoying overhang of the bumpers anyway.
Not with the battery in the back and no weight over the front it won't
@@nj2033 weight is not always best over the front, weight low is where the performance is, yes you might be able to climb up steep terrain very slightly better, but coming back down or side hilling will just have it rolling over, which the TRX4 does, I've had 4 of them and always sold them because they perform so poorly, they aren't 'scale' either and in my opinion, just don't drive very nicely... They almost feel toy grade.
This is definitely performs better than a TRX4 sport. The COG is much lower. The price isn't as low and durability is likely not quite as good.
Agreed!
Axial pulled a typical Traxxas move on this one. Show up late to the game, make what appears to be a cheaper vehicle, and come in at a higher price point. Great idea, but totally missed the mark.
Trx4 sport from axial
I actually think Axial made a smart decision with this truck. It's essentially a rtr builders kit. I bet the sell a bunch of these. The haters will no doubt be out to add their 2cents but then again aren't they always...
Well this explains getting rid of the SCX10.2 raw builders kits so cheap. I'm guessing we will see a builders kit based on this turd.
Man, I don't know that id hold my breath for that.
I agree with others. I want a builder's kit or a roller. I might get one and put a deadbolt body on it. Black window stickers would look much better then the silver imo.
I bet Traxxas has black window stickers patented.😄
@@danielkonrad1444 😄 🤣 😂
I rarely ever hold my breath for kits any more.
@@HarleyDesignsInc they are unicorns
@@HarleyDesignsInc agree 👍
What is it with Axial and all this trash? Just re re the Yeti. SCX24 was the last good release.
Nice! Here's hoping for a kit version, very interesting for custom builds. If not a kit version, then at least an ARTR (almost ready to run) without the electronics, so builders can chose their own.
Why did I sit here and watch this ?????? I'll never buy one.
TRX4 Sport was released May 2018. To see Axial issue a "me too" 4 years later, and at a higher price point is very disappointing. Enduro, GEN8V2 and TRX4 Sport are all competitors that offer a lower price point. Why purchase this unless you are an Axial fan? Transmission choice is terrible. Keep it simple Axial! 3 gear transmission with forward mounted motor. Have to say I am surprised they didn't use a Jeep Comanche body.
Jeep bodies add expensive licensing costs, so that would be the reason there.
Overpriced scx10-2 with portals and a different transmission. Meh. I'll stick to my og scx10
They are a big leap forward compared to the original SCX, but the SCX2 is still a great option.
This is only $40 more than an rtr 10.2 honcho… considering the honcho has dog bones, plastic links, sintered axle gears, and essentially friction shocks, I know which one I would buy.
That is a really good way to look at it.
Also considering the honcho is now discontinued and the deadbolt is looking to follow. It is now what we have. I really hope to see a revision of the wraith 1.9 come back. Maybe a wraith 1.9 with portals but keep the three gear trans! I did however dump my gladiator and picked up the base camp. So far I’m not regretting it as what I sold it for has built a pretty well equipped base camp.
Looks so cheap
The cost cutting ideas can be clearly seen in many areas.
That's ridiculous at that price point. If they want to go budget, just offer a III Kit without bodyset! But this release is like 3 steps back down the cliff 🤦🏻♂️
RTR's are what sells though, people just don't want to build and figure out their own electronics.
They missed the mark on price point. But I’m sure there will be $120 coupon in a few months, lol.
@@HarleyDesignsInc NOT everyone.... there's got to be enough Builders left.
Look at the comments! 😉
WIGGLE WIGGLE WIGGLE
Anyone still have an original SCX10? I got mine cheap when the SCX10ii came out. It's ancient for an RC but still works great.
The SCX2 and 3 are big leaps over the OG, it’s definitely worth looking for a newer gen. But if you’re already having fun, just keep rocking.
Looks like you ordered a Trx4 from wish lol
Oh cool. Axial made a element enduro sendero.
Could have Matt done better at Nats than 100th with this truck? If so could the 10 year old gir have beaten Matt with this truck?
hmmmm without any scale points... it would have been tough.
This truck in an rtr form is decent but dollar for dollar I still think the trx4 sport is the better value... however, if they offer this as a raw builders kit I'll buy one. I wish they had skipped out on the licensed bumpers and wheels and lowered the cost around 30ish dollars to really compete and beat the trx4.. the aftermarket support for the traxxas is also substantially better. I hope this plain Jane theme hangs around a while. All of the fancy half working click clack stuff is exactly why I haven't gotten a 10.3 as of yet....
yeah I'm not too impressed with this one ..... after all the good stuff Axial launched in the last 1.5 years I'm shocked that they would do something like this. Love the name :) Base Camp
I have had a bunch of friends skip axial because the big price tag
So seeing a sub 400 truck from them would bring back a lot of entry level customers
@@Vanquishfanboy thats the one good point to this rig
It's hard to be impressed without really focusing on the price. It was clearly the main focus.
- Just "buy" another set (4) of these FALKEN "variants", you can afford it !!!
- No "need" to heat-up & un-glue those nice tires, from those rims !!!! 🤨.....
...😩 Noooo !!!! "Don't "do it", Josh !!! .......(🙈) ...it's "NOT" happening !!!.....
So axial released a Scx10 version that is backwards in quality and features….🤷🏼 why?
All about the dollars, trying to make it more affordable.
Do you think we are starting to see a push for productivity from horizon have an effect on quality of design and craftsmanship? Also is Axial racing retaining full creative rights to their products?
If they can pay someone to put the window stickers on! Why can’t
They pay someone to
Take stickers off after
The paint drys on the
Inside! A body that rubs
On tires RTR out of the
Box! At least Element RC
Tires are easy to remove
And replace! How much
Money in labor and glue
Did Axial pay factory to
Mount tires on wheels?
Can’t wait for version 2
Of this truck!
AXIAL BASE CAMP 2
Coming in 2023
"PROS".....uhhh...!! #[zero]✓... 😔 "CONS"...YOU BOUGHT THIS TRUCK !!!!! 🤣😂😭
Perfect place to medicate and just goto that happy place of Zen Crawl Mode goodness.
Build kits! We need them back. I rather have the better/best offer of their OEM then to pay for China shit parts and paid China laborers. We end up building our RTR anyways because it was built wrong and thrown together during a bowl of fried rice. I miss the AX10 build days!
The biggest advantage towards this instead of a TRX Sport is, this thing has some steering angle.
And the COG is better.
Okay, I am ready to see a box stock Base Camp VS Sport ;}
Pretty lame release.....
Hope they put the Deadbolt II back on blowout sale....would snatch that up before this one.
Just picked this one up, did some body trimming before first run. Curious how it will do against my trx4 sport
I’m actually impressed with what you get for the money I could see running it almost as is without having to replace a lot to suit my taste or because of durability issues, I’d still be dumping most of the electronics but I use a Spectrum system for my crawlers so RX wouldn’t end up in the bin but likely find itself in a different project. Obviously they are going after the TRX4 Sport. well have to see how it sells vs TRX4 and Element
Turns that skid plate around or make one if that tranny is reversible. Added motor forward weight Benefit not huge but I remember your idk maybe first deadbolt/honcho build and you saying every little bit adds up to a capable rig.
Introducing a great vehicle!😊👍🏻👍🏻
My daughter already found the switch and is running at 100% and treating hers like a Rock bouncer. 😂
How does this truck compare to the axial wraith 1.9? Literally cannot find any sort of comparison
When you say re-gear on minute 12:31, what gear part is used for that? how is that done?
I want to modify to straight axles but cant find any instructions for gear mod
Wow a $400 scale crawler that is stripped down. Never seen one of these before😂😂😂😂😜😜😜
- JOSH, is like FOX NEWS... "FAIR & BALANCED" !!!! 😆😂🤣😆👍
"DO NOT BUY THE 1ST BATCH OF THESE" ...don't be a "TEST DUMMY" !!!!! 😯
It almost like an updated 10ii
The new trucks like it did pretty good. Great video Brother keep up the great work
It's definitely the best performing scx3!
Finally succumbed to the goofy face thumbnails.. 🙄
if no one's going to say it I will.... does that not look like the proline metric body???
Element is alot beqtter. Trx4 has better quality and more reliable hardware wise.
Kinda makes me think Axial made a Element Enduro that has portals. Not saying that’s bad. I’ll order one and see what this is like.
looks like great intro to hobby rig, very upgradable.
but some of those parts look bare minimum.
looks like Element might have nice parts per dollar...
but... Just what ya need. none of the extra
Going to wait for the kit version that I’m sure it coming to just pick electronics and body put of the gate.
I don't know if I would hold my breath for a kit, but it's something we may have to talk about on the Livestream Takeover
Great video Josh. Hopefully Axial releases this as an even more affordable kit version. This truck might be a great contender for a budget build between you and Matt.
It would be a great Build-Off for Matt and Josh!
It would also be a great LOW cost option for the rest of us.
The SLT3 throttle limiter does not limit reverse though...😂
"Excuse me waiter? Can I get a side of tire sauce to go with my order?"
I like it, but the 5 gear seems like a gimmick instead of just making the top shaft longer to fit the spur on either side if the trans, and flipping it.
The 5 gear is an odd choice to me as well, it's interesting.
Trx4 sport copy cat much
Definitely where the benchmark was measured against
**OVERALL GEAR RATIO... [ 10.65:1 ]** 🤔.......!!??
Hello from southeast alaska do you have any stickers for my rock crawlers?
The first thing I do is take parts off when I buy a new rc, so this in my eyes is perfect.
My trx4 sport is looking at me and saying don't you dare lol
Thanks for digging into the transmission. The press release info was very lacking on that. I think the 10.2 Deadbolt or 1.9 Wraith would still be my choice if I had to pick and Axial RTR
The 10.2 is still a great option.
$20 isn't that big a difference between this and the Traxxas Sport...but it's enough.
You're right, it's not nothing.
Think this might discontinue 10.2? I would’ve liked to see clear windows myself. Good unboxing and review.
Man... if it sells well, I could see it being the final nail. I hope not though, I still think the 2.0 was the best one.
@@HarleyDesignsInc yeah the 10.2 was my favorite, trail honcho was my first crawler! It’s CoachD by the way lol…
Seems expensive for what you get.
Almost 400 dollars ain’t cheap lol
Look at that. A trail truck from 2015.
The window stickers look like the window masks and I can't get over that 😂
My single biggest complaint!
I kinda feel bad for the R&D department under the current constraints. I feel that regardless of some of the short points this may fall upon, building a vehicle based on price point and bringing more people into the hobby is a win for the community. With that being said, so many companies are falling under the horizon umbrella and a platform such as this allows them to flourish through upgrades and give us , the consumer more options in the long run. 👍🏻Axial!
From the comments, looks like someone needs to do a TRX4 head-to-head. Brother, if I'm ever out on the rock with you, please tell me to shut up if I start asking you questions in the middle of a video session.
I would definitely prefer ARTR. I'm getting lazy!
Hey Josh what part of Folsom is that?
Gosh. I'm so jealous of the place you're crawling in... We don't have rocks here... :(
Nice video by the way, I would love to see a second video about the free upgrade you can do to it (Moving bumpers in and higher, Heavy trimming of the body, Lower COG, etc...) to see how much better it performs after a little bit of work :)
I may do a 1-day build, but I don't know if I'll fully focus on free!
@@HarleyDesignsInc would still love to watch that !
I'm very interested in the trimming part, as it made my old SCX 1 (with upgraded radio and WP1080) so much more enjoyable to use as a real crawler and not just a trail truck :)
scx10 2.5? is not a acx10.2 and is not a scx10.3
Where do you crawl, with this truck?
How fast is this thing? Good Video
Is that folsom lake in the intro?
😆🤣😂... - and THAT "IS WHERE" - YOU GET THE REVERSING TRANSMISSION !!!!! - JOSH YOU ARE FUNNY !!! 😆🤣 👍🤘😎👌
Great review.
I do think that this truck has potential.
But.... alot of money will have to be spent to bring to a great level.
In my opinion.
Then your getting to a pheonix level.
I think Matt had a good point by saying this would be a great builders kit.
Add a few things, and take a number if things away.
That chassis is not bad.
Though I like my forward mounting motor and trans in my 10.3
Haha.
Vanquish vfd twin is better but hahaha.
Body is ugly.. haha.
I've been out of the rc game a few years. I had a scx10 and wraith which apparently are now both discontinued. Do you have a comparison vid on the 10.2 vs 10.3? I picked up a scx24 and want to pick up a 1/10 again too
Excellent review, much better than the product. Seems like everything in the package is ready for an upgrade, so why bother with this when other manufacturers have much more to offer. Two thumbs down.
Trx4 is still king imo
Nice scenery mate. Not a fan of that body but I’m amazed it’s not another jeep from axial tbh 🤷♂️😉
Definitely a starter rig. But if you're an advanced hobbyist and have a few trucks already, you probably won't be buying this.
Budget build off?
Iowa RC Outlaws!
It’s truck 👍😂
A good “base” to build a rig on w/ more garbage Horizon electronics. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll offer a roller? Nice review.
This is Axials answer for the TRX4 Sporti think. The Bumper looks similar;) Nice for starting the Hobby if u dont want to build. Nice Review thx for the Video as always 👍
eh, didnt traxxas already perfect this platform? big bulky trans in the middle kinda sucks. no room for scale bodies. i think a sport with defender rear links would be a better choice
I just don't understand the portals for a budget base. Could have done without the licensing as well on wheels and bumpers...
Give me a deadbolt or honcho body and cage please.... This is my desire for a budget based 10iii.
I think they are assuming that people want the portals and won't buy as many without them. The licensing on things like bumpers and tires doesn't necessarily cost anything actually.
@@HarleyDesignsInc I'd be ok with not seeing portals on new releases for a bit... Maybe I'm alone in that
Look our trx4 sport
Worth it.? NO.!!!
On full turning lock does the tyre rub against the underneath link bar? Also are the electronics waterproof out of then box?
I can't say its the worst thing I've seen Axial do, but nothing about it really excites me. It feels like an answer to a question nobody asked.
Nice hat lol
I was thinking this could be a good starter/donor rig for a flat rail chassis, but this new transmission design doesn't appear to use the 3-gear bolt pattern we're used to seeing on so many aftermarket skids. I'm sure it won't take long for companies to adapt their bolt hole pattern. It definitely looks like a good foundation to be a real performer. I actually use this Tx/Rx combo on my Sendero HD. It might sound crazy, but it lets me keep my winch on a momentary vs a toggle that the AE transmitter has. I was initially looking for just the receiver used so I could use my DX5c, and stumbled on the combo for less than a new SR315. Now I have a remote for each crawler and my friends or wife can go with me and use the crawler they want to try
However, I loved the Jeep 2000 XJ rtr!!! So I am pretty happy about this one, even though its a half pound heavier than the XJ.
