Believe it or not, my very first guitar was a Gibson V. I'm a pilot, and have always loved airplanes, so way back when I was 18 years old and just starting to learn guitar, the Flying V was my choice because hey, it looks like an airplane! I'm 58 now and I still have that Gibson V that started my guitar journey. I love that guitar!
I wish that was my first guitar, I would've saved a lotta money.
@@shawnstarks1743 I was blessed that my step dad was in the music business, and so my folks blessed me with that guitar when I told them I was learning to play. I was shocked, to say the least when a REAL GIBSON showed up! I have treasured that guitar for the last 40 years. The star of my guitar collection, and so important to me because of who gave it to me. : )
@@NegdoshaManido That V's got to be worth a small fortune now, do you know what year it is?
@@user-vs1xw6fh4w It's a 1981 The "V" CMT Cherry Sunburst. I've always adored it, and treated it with loving care. It's in VERY good shape. In fact, it still has the protective clear plastic on the back cover for the pots. Original case too.
@@NegdoshaManido What a gem. If it's the one I'm thinking of with the round tip headstock and no pick guard then you have a very sought after treasure on your hands
im a drummer. why am I here
Haha! Because Flying V's are awesome, even if your a drummer. I know, because I'm a Flying V player, and a drummer! :D
Bro same I think I lost brain cells
😹
Dude I play the saxophone and I’m here
I too am a drummer. God bless you.
I practice on all of my electrics like they were V's. Kind of a classical position where the groove rests on my left leg and the neck is at a 45° angle from my hips. I think resting the guitar on our right leg is a habit we tend to develop because of acoustic guitars. I find it way more ergonomic to practice this way and feels closer to playing standing up. Try it out.
You know what you might be onto something
Absolutely agree
Tho I try to at least every once in a while play with my guitar resting on my right leg, try to be comfortable holding my guitar in any position, specially when I see blues player be so versitile in that position, but it really does feel more uncomfortable than it does in a classical way as you say, has a lot of pros and very few cons
@@diegoflores3831 The Flying V is super light weight cause a huge chunk of wood has been cut away from its body to keep the weight down
Call me weird but I find the V and SG to be the most comfortable guitars to play sitting down and standing. Strat too of course.
Also, the SG has incredible high note access...
I agree, SG just feels perfect for me
SG yes. The V I can’t sit and play it at all lol
I own a SG too and to me its so cool to play and very confy. But my favorite guitar ever is a flying v cause its so futuristic and vintage at the same time, incredible design and style... And the sound of it, its amazing... Never played one. But i want to haha
V standing up for sure, sitting maybe not. I play in classical position sitting down anyway so it's not too different, but I have to put my wrist on an uncomfortable angle to wedge the wing between my legs properly which starts to hurt after a bit.
Telecaster sitting down is perfect for me personally, Tele for anything is perfect honestly
You are NOT weird. Guitars that aren't V shaped are weird.
The thing about the V is this, its awkward at first. The whole putting it between your legs thing. However, it grows on you and you get use to it and you start to like it. Then you find out you can't go back to playing another guitar shape, "that" becomes awkward. I've owned over 50 guitars in my life, all shapes strats, teles, les pauls, ml's, 335's, 175's, jazzmasters, etc. That's what happened to me. Now all I play is V's. You find out you cant live without playing a V, that's how you know its for you.
This has become one of my favourite videos, really helpful, thanks!
Great video, Ben! As a recent owner of a Flying V myself, you pretty much summed it all up in a nutshell! When we can start doing shows, it for sure is going to be seeing lots of stage time!
Cool! Now I want to try one! I play sitting Classical style with all my guitars on my left leg anyway. Love the access the V gives to upper register.
They are so comfy for classical position! That's the reason I switched to Flying Vs
As a fan of the V, and owner of multiple, great video. Covers most bases and gives a really complete view on faq's, and the "V experience" as I like to call it. Can't imagine a world without em. Rock on
Great info... ty
Looks like you've covered about all the bases. Nice job! The other thing that I like regarding the vibrato, is that the scale length is usually slightly shorter than a Fender, so you can really wail with it. 😃
And the fact that so many are made of mahogany is a big plus, in my opinion. 😎
Extra credit: Take a shot of whiskey, every time he says "super".
You're welcome. 😁
Awesome video!
Well done Ben that was very through. I have never touched one of those guitars but I have long wondered why anyone would want one.
Great video! I now want a flying v!
The backing guitar tones on the intro is absolutely the BEST backing tone I’ve ever heard IMHO! How did you achieve that TONE? Would you give me advice or let me know your setup for that tone? Also i throughly enjoyed this video!🙏🏻 cheers.
my 5th electric was a huge baritone peavey 7 string V. Coming from a classical background, I felt very uncomfortable playing my previous guitars. But playing the V felt so natural, since I LOVE playing in a classical position.
I dig your competitive nature my friend. I personally don’t play guitar as if it was karate, but maybe I should start!
Just ordered my first V, can’t wait to try it even though I’ve been playing Strats for decades
Great video. My first proper guitar was an epiphone flying v and I still use it as my main guitar after 22 years! You got all the pros and cons bang on! It is perfect to play sitting down! I just bought a strat and boy does it feel weird as to hold and play but I'm sure I will get used to it!
What flying V model that your talking about?
I’m always sitting down so I guess I should get a V style guitar aye
I own a couple guitars. Gibson Les Paul custom, Charvel San Dimas, and a couple of Dean Vs. The Vs have been getting most of my attention because I like the “feel” better and they sound phenomenal!!👍🏻
Thank you so much, you made me realize ,that though I love to watch good players play a flying V , I don't want to own one myself
I’m 59 and used to have hair like yours, now I’m bald AF! Enjoy while you can!✌🏻💙🙏🏻
Yep. Next year definitely will 😀🤗.
Damn fine assessment (pros and cons)!
Thank you Steve! Glad you enjoyed the video!! Are you for the Flying V or not so?
@@BenRowlandsMusic Yep a "for flying V" from me, but not for everything. Also, would be interested in your assessment of the Explorer experiment too!
I just bought a Jackson v and it is sweet!!! I love it and I find I can control playing it better than a regular shape guitar. The lock nut and Floyd Rose keeps it's in perfect tune for whammyin the hell out of it!!! The v shape makes for a perfect leg hold on it!!! Like you said!! ROCK ON DUDE!!!!
I know I’m really late on this comment, but what model is your Jackson V? I’ve been searching for a V for a while now but all the Jacksons I tried have a Floyd Rose special and the the guitar doesn’t stay in tune after whammying for a bit
Love the musiK💯
I like your energy!
Very nice video. Never looked at this this way (about the sitting position). I always assumed a flying v is not very ergonomic.
I really like this video, you really mark it by just going up on a stage with a Flying V. , compared to gibson, how do you like Dean flying V?
Flying Vs are awesome! I have one and I'm planning to get another one soon \,,/
My favourites are those asymmetrical ones, I think they are even more comfortable than the traditionals
You look like one of my best friends from high school back in the 90s. They don't make people like you anymore. You're a rare breed.
Michael Schenker has taught me much. :)
Fun video, Hairy Potter. I've never met a flying-V that didn't have strap stability problems or near-impossible capability of sitting in your lap. As far as nobody having ever seeon one/being very rare, I'm sorry, but the Randy Rhoads V is every-frickin-where.
I just got a rare flying V bass, and I was surprised by how comfortable it actually is
I am a Flying V player and in my humble opinion it is the most comfortable guitar I ever played. I had before other guitars and I would not go back to traditional shape such as Strat etc. Great review brother!
Same! That's what I've said! There is nothing like shredding on the high notes with a Flying V. It's just made for it
FYI, the case bit is specific to your model. Gibsons come with a form-fitting case that is barely bigger than the guitar itself.
I used to loan a Gothic Flying V from a familiar shop to a rehearsal, the next time I show up without that guitar, everyone keep asking "Hey, where's that V".
I think it is a really striking guitar for live performance.
I noticed that you have a Hendrix Flying V, is there a huge difference between it and a regular V and does it worth the price premium?
Is there any chance you could do one for an explorer style guitar ?
Hey! If I get one in the future sure! It's a guitar shape I'm yet to try!
I actually sold mine and got a V for classical style positioning. I got tendinitis in my picking elbow. Now its gone after getting a V. But I actually prefer the Dean ML because it sits on my left leg as well
@@jd426 wow very interesting comment. I have tendinitis on my fretting hand. I wonder if in a similar way there is a guitar shape which might help me.
@@jd426 I have tendinitis in both wrists, and the Flying V is sure the most comfortable guitar!
I completely agree. Flying V to me as well is the best guitar sitting down (as well as for standing up). Very ergonomic. I actually bought one just to test out and I’ve hence been replacing my LP’s and strats with different V’s 😁
Anyone else notice how far from the edge of the fretboard the low e string is?
My Flying V is a '67 Reissue; the case is much smaller than the aircraft carrier that holds my Explorer, and the output jack is in a less inconvenient spot than on the '58 style body. And it's only 6lbs. It was the second guitar I bought as a high schooler and has been my favorite guitar ever since.
IMO the Flying V's upper register access is rivaled only by the SG and the Less Paul Junior.
My name is Mubatu. Our village in Africa do not have money to buy real guitars. We instead made our own from thrown away rubbish. You are so lucky to have both music and food.
Nice Dean Michael Schenker guitar!
Yep I don't have one yet but I don't see Albert King having a problem sitting and jamming with Stevie Ray Vaughn cool video thanks
Great video Ben!
I'm a beginner bassist and I wanted to take up guitar as well. Would you recommend a Flying V for a beginner as my first guitar?
Thanks!
Nah man. You probably want a Stratocaster style guitar. Most comfortable to beginners in my opinion
@@dylanadams0225 Thanks! I appreciate it!
@@gregoryashley7963 They do make Flying V Basses too & Flying Vs tend to weigh less cause a huge chunk of wood has been cut off its body to keep the weight down
@@RockStarOscarStern634 Thanks for info Oscar!
The ESP LTD Black Metal Arrow is my weapon of choice.
I just don’t have it yet.
how do you know you enjoy playing with it yet then
doesnt make sense
Its a well oiled machine, Ive had one for a while. Make sure to take it to a pro shop for the floyd setup and you'll be golden. Frets are silky smooth
The flying V makes such a statement like you said. Most of the best metal bands use them. They just rock!!
My struggle is i stopped playing after 1 year of a v due to covid mental health problems and now that im back i kinda forgot how i put my right hand in a way it doesnt cut circulation
What was the guitar model name that is used in this vedio
Need to know please
Your hair is really pretty 🥂
Ernie Ball guitars also have perfect access to the higher frets. And any SG guitar.
I am very happy with my Jackson Rhoads, the strings are very narrow to the fretboard, so its easier to press them down
Playing a les paul sitting down makes my shoulder hurt. The shoulder of my picking arm. Sitting in the classical position with a v its just a more natural position for my arm. Especially for someone with longer arms
The ergonomic reasons for how it might be better for your back to play a guitar that forces you to sit more upright was actually the most interesting to me. 🤔 Of course, it’s not like us guitarists aren’t constantly looking for excuses to buy new instruments anyway…
I have several guitars and all of them are V. Couldn't think of a single moment that I've ever felt the need to own a traditional shape, mainly because I love the V's playability and it's something I could never get from any other shapes. But if you're gonna ask me what the biggest drawback is, I'd say it'll always be those moments when I take my guitar out of the case, people would instantly expect I'd fucking shred like KK Downing, and get disappointed when I start playing. Lol
I have two V's. A pre- lawsuit ESP LTD 200 in Alpine white.... Because I like Hetfields V from kill em all. And I have a 1984 Westone dynasty white with red pinstripes. That one has coil taps and reverse phase. Sounds mint. It's like a V with more angles. Totally 80's.
I love the flying V 😍😍.... especially with a white wash and a blood spatter finish 😂
I forgot where I saw one of those at.
@@RichLunaMusic esp .....on insta ig
I am tempted as FUCK to get one right now
Epiphone Prophecy in particular looks so damn promising
I have one small observation about your sitting playing position:
1.- when you sit with PRS you set the guitar on your right leg
2.- when you sit with Flying V you set the guitar "technically" between your legs, however it is more close to a classical position
The PRS would be sitting on a classical position just by switching your leg, I mean, if you take the guitar and rest it on your left leg, however this position is very awkward if you dont have an actual feet support for your left leg to be a little bit rised from the floor.
I dont know if I made my self clear haha
Answer as short as simple: YES
Im not going to pretend the V is the most practical design. But it is the one i fell in love with
Jackson King V have the cable socket on the inside of the V no issues, Jackson have a Gigbag which you can carry on your back with backpack Style strap's you can go anywhere!
What guitar is that?
Beautiful guitar big fan f
cool guitar
Its not about competition. Its about writing good music
I would like to buy the classic one, but there is a problem-monney. I will save some, but it will took a while.
Flying V also helps because of the angle you play it sitting down and standing up is the same
I really want a white v just like James hetfield's Elektra flying v😍
I play every guitar in this position
It's a very light weight Electric Guitar cause a huge chunk of wood has been cut away from its super thin body to keep the weight down.
Woah what's that guitar model name
Love my Dean Razorback V!
Dean Dean Dean Dean!
I have a Dean MetalMan bass v body
JIMI HENDRIX played a flying V... only one time that I can remember seeing..☮️
My v had the input in the v wing i hated it broke 2 cables with it there
Pros:
1. Easier access to highest frets.
2. Light weight.
3. Better vibrato.
4. More natural holding position.
Cons:
1. Awkward cable plug-in.
2. Big, heavy case makes it hard to transport the guitar.
If you get used a v ,is more comfortable even through a regular guitar
tought it was going to be a chix in the thumb nail
“People expect you to be good”
Welp… imma head out.
Very cool and descriptive! Made a lot of sense.
I love my flying v.
Never had a v guiatr and i want one instead of buying a lespaul i wish i would have buyed v
All guitars are just for looks. Just all about what your look and comfort is.
You got to mention the perfect tonal balance… metal sounds best on a v and that is a fact !!
Alexi esp are the best
Michael Schenker is where you get your inspiration possiblely?????? The legend at 17 yrs old
If you look at the way Gibson played his flying v, youll see another pro.
Also, you can put it down and it doesnt fall the fook over because its not round, it has legs😁
The real con is the neck dive
When its between my legs it hits the chair, so I cant sit back. Uncomfy. Then it's all the way west. I have to squeeze my legs together to hold it up. It's totally lame. Gonna chop it onto an ergo😂
"That's all it's about the end of the day : you want to be the fastest guitarist in the room". Err, no, not really.
Think that was a joke lol
Yes really
There are other guitars withgood upper fret access. Neckthrough Jackson warrior, soloist, neckthrough bc rich bich, warlock, ibanez rgs, kiesels,
I like the stability that the guitar offers. But the V is not for everyone.

I’m gonna be a shoegazer with my V
Not exactly a flying v shape, but my favourite guitarist was Alexi Laiho and I've grown seeing videos of him playing his signature sat down, so yeah it's perfectly posible as you say xd
