I get the complaints with the SG's. You're pretty much spot on. The story behind the SG is back in the late 50's the Les Paul's actually weren't selling well because a lot of people just thought they were too heavy (which they were lol) so Gibson designed the SG which was supposed to be a smaller, more lightweight guitar. They were actually even originally called the "Les Paul SG" but had to change it due to some licensing issues with Les Paul.

I used to hate teles. Then I watched the anime called "Beck" and I fell in love with it. Then I watched "Given" and the lead guitarist in that also uses a tele. And I just started to like the shape. Now it's one of my favorite shapes easily. And turns out, they are really easy to play. The layout is a lot more comfortable than a strat because of the tone knob placement. But they definitely sound nothing alike ofc.

Rhoads or a offset V is god/S tier. Looks metal and not too bad to play with sitting down. Prefer it over a regular V style guitar due to it being easier to play. Something about that shorter end makes it easier to play sitting down compared to a King V where it gets in the way.

Explorers are a strange bird. I bought an Epiphone a few months ago just because it looks cool as hell. Personally, I was surprised with how comfortable and well balanced guitar it is. It is deffinatly a standing player guitar. It is not for sitting and playing, I mean, you can do it but requiers a change of sitting position. I have to move myself kinda to the edge of the sofa when I play. But standing up is where it shines. It is well balanced, body heavy so there is no neck dive at all. The fin or the wing at the back is a great anchor point for your elbow for that fast rythm style of James Hetfield. Also, it is a tall peoples guitar. I am not that tall (183cm or just over 6') and I find an Explorer feels better than a Strat or a Les Paul. I can see how people of smaller stature can find those guitars kinda big and cumbersome.

When I started playing, the classic Les Paul shape was the holy grail for me, then for a long time the superstrat but for many years the good old telecaster has been my favorite (not with single coils :)), which is both classic and comfortable, see the forearm cut. Aside from the "Hetfield effect", I've never really liked angular shapes. However, Robbin Crosby's (Ratt) round-shaped Jackson Firebird, which may seem interesting at first looks fantastic. By the way, the original Jackson King V was made for him, his nickname was King because of his height.

You should give the Joe Duplantier tele from Charvel. It’s old school style with modern updates. Sounds and plays amazing as well.

remember that the telecaster was designed to be inexpensive and easy to mass produce so it's the most basic of nearly all guitars and it was the very first mass produced of all solid body electric guitars,

Regarding the SG, it's not about the body mass, but the construction. I own a hefty LTD Viper and it still has a neck dive (very VERY heavy SG). Wanna push forward with your right hand? Try Firebird (ESP Phoenix), or Eclypse (Les Paul), so the SG type obviously belongs higher on the list.

I predicted the Strat and the Les Paul in the top tier, but failed miserably on the SG. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the say.

I'm a strict ML man. I love big guitars and stuff like LPs are too small on me. I'm a big dude so the ML fits perfectly.

Real talk, if you haven't seen the Woodrite Warlord you should absolutely give those a Google. They're like a thick SG with Les Paul thickness, think the old Yamaha SBG models that Santana played in his early days

Hey how about doing one of these tier lists on guitar bridges? Floyd vs tune o matic vs strat trem vs hard tail 6 saddle strat etc.
Because I feel like the biggest variable after the scale length and the style of the neck is the bridge choice.

Great list! I've got different opinions on some of them (I love the Majesty shape but have never been a fan of the Strat or Superstrat shapes), but that's just down to personal preference. I really appreciate the "it just doesn't do it for me" approach to stuff you don't like, since a lot of folks out there present their opinions as fact rather than subjective.
On a single-cut note, have you ever tried out one of the higher-end Gibson Les Paul High Performance/HP models from 2016 or 2017? They've got some nice modern appointments such as the Axcess neck carve, titanium nuts and saddles, slightly wider fretboard (but with the same string spacing), etc. I picked up a 2017 Les Paul Classic HP in Heritage Cherry Sunburst from the Gibson Demo Shop on Reverb and it was everything I hoped it might be. Gibson had replaced the robo tuner with some locking Grovers, and I can't help but think they would've sold a helluva lot more of them if they'd just done that during the original production run.

😟I love my SG. I have a lightweight 2004 Faded (Tribute in today’s mode) and it doesn’t neck dive. Next trip to the store. Try a satin finished Tribute SG, you may get one like.

I'm a huge fan of NON-TREM super strats (Give me a Schecter C-1 with a TOM or other non-trem bridge and I'm a happy dude)...Pretty much all I own except a couple offsets (Jaguar/Jazzmaster style). Love the ML because of Dime, but I'd never play one.

  • @Andrew_182
    @Andrew_182 Год назад

Hard agree on the Majesty. I know they're great to play, but I just can't vibe with it
Also, funny enough, my first guitar was an Epiphone G310 which potentially is an SG you would like because its got a thicker (like strat thickness, not LP) non-heavily contoured body and its a bolt on neck, which sits further into the body than the set neck version therefore eliminating the bridge forward feel you mentioned. Made in Korea and has a modern C neck instead of Epiphones divisive D. While on the cheap side, mine was actually well made with the only weakness being the pickups/hardware. Can pick one up on Reverb for like 250-300 these day. Would be an interesting and cheap mod project for you and then you'd have an SG you potentially like.

For me the tele, LP, thunderbird, SA from Ibanez, Fender offsets, PRS double cut and most Gretsch single cut hollow bodies are where it’s at.
From the really extreme ones, I think X would be my favourite or Explorer, not sure which one I prefer.
The ones I don’t like would be also the Majesty, SG, Vs, Stratocaster (I have a weird love and hate relationship with that body shape, the shape itself I like but the classic one with the pick guard I don’t like that much), Steinberger I hate haha…
But overall I just love guitars and if I was rich I’d probably have most body shapes in my collection
