  • A glimpse of our second Arcade Creek cleanup on Saturday, a little project under Watt Avenue where a new camp recently took hold. 54 batteries, over 40 used syringes, 9 shopping carts and piles of trash were removed from the dry creek channel and adjacent banks in about 2 hours.
Thank you David and Khaliah of Elk Grove Anti-Trash for joining Lisa and David to make this happen. We love our partnership, and your relentless support and assistance, to the moon and back. 💚
Now, if only the City of Sacramento, cared as much about our waterways as the rest of the City. 😐

Its bad enough you have to clean the creek, but to have to repeatedly do the same areas is incredibly frustrating. Uh. My heart goes out to all the volunteers. Its so disheartening that people just don't care.

What a sad life these homeless people lead. No respect for anything, other people, their surroundings, nature and also themselves.

What a sad sight under the bridge! Lots of shopping carts, clothing and needles. The ducks make their nests nearby... Thank you to all the volunteers for caring and cleaning up the mess.

How about people stop complaining about homeless people and how terrible they are. Let’s talk about “outreach” … what if the residents of this camp agreed to fill black garbage bags with their trash and receive $5 each (capped at 20 bags a month) if any trash is found below the camp the deal is off … and or McDonalds vouchers. It could work in some cases and then you just pick up the bags. I’ll personally cover the costs for one camp for one year. The problem is complex and varied and so will the solutions. For some camps small dumpster will work better with road access. You can say it’ll never work and so on and you can watch the creek fill with garbage but eventually some things will work and be part of a comprehensive strategy that is at worst partially effective.

It's illegal to camp at this location, or along pretty much any other waterway in Sacramento. Installing a "trash program" would only further blur the lines and would encourage more illegal encampments. Please know, we work as hard behind the scenes on preventative tasks as we do in the waterways.
The City has designated safe grounds, shelters and RV spots all over town. They need more. Of course, we would have no objection if any of the countless non-profits and local departments and agencies tasked with dealing with homelessness in the region assisted with an incentive trash program of some sort. But if you are somehow suggesting that volunteers already completely tapped out cleaning up the mess (5-6, sometimes 7 cleanups a week), do "more", that is an unreasonable and impossible request. Many of us also have full-time jobs.

The areas where bags are supplied to campers and trash receptacles are nearby don’t fair any better. Did you see all the needles recovered? Your logic doesn’t work with folks who abuse meth, fentanyl and heroin. But by all means, please go out and try yourself.

The Supreme Court is hearing this case right now. Homeless people cant exist on private land so they in theory must be allowed on public land or else it is illegal to be homeless. Because shelter is provided somewhere else does not preclude them from camping in public right of way areas. I’m not in anyway saying I like this situation but reality is a funny thing. My brother was addicted to opioids and eventually overdosed and died. His only motivation each day was to get money when he was “on the clock” (withdraws were kicking in) he would have bagged that whole creek to get his daily dose. I do believe enforcement is at least half the solution but current federal and state laws are not on your side and with exploding real estate cost for both home buyers and renters we are seeing a proportional increase in homelessness. Sanitation Services must be provided to this vulnerable group. As a side not the average time spent homeless nationally is 8 1/2 months. Long term “endemic” homelessness is around 15 percent of the total population of homeless of which most have mental illness and drug addiction. So low functioning people with autism, anxiety, bipolar, etc are highly likely to fall into drug use as a result of long term homelessness.

@@HueJorgen We are very sorry for your loss and wish you all the best. While we wish we could cure drug addition, mental illness, homelessness and all the other issues impacting society, we are just trash cleaning volunteers and environmental advocates helping to clean and restore our waterways. In our short 17 month history, we have far more successes than failures and don't plan to waiver any time soon. All positive support is appreciated. All the best.
