The new trailer for The Bad Batch (Final Season) is out and lo and behold at the end of the clip Asajj Ventress appears. The same Asajj Ventress who died in Quinlan Voss' arms in the Dark Disciple. It wasn't a random death, it was the result of Asajj Ventress' long and arduous journey and transformation from a dark side assassin to a more positive charcter. Her death was supposed to be her redemption... what happens now?

Do you have any insight as to why the Jedi didn’t use blasters during the Clone Wars? Their main enemy wasn’t living beings, and it may have saved lives.

It would have taken years of training in magic to do even a fraction of what she was able to do as you can’t just brute force or finesse your way through that type of power. Even if annakin started training as I kid in that magic I don’t think he would have been able to reach the required level. He was probably close but not entirely

That's not an empire symbol in her shoulder, but a serpent. You can see the details in her concept art for what was going to be Dark Disciple.
That's what I was thinking. I'm pretty sure she wears the same pauldron with that symbol in tcw s5 as a bounty hunter.
I doubt she'll be working for the empire this season, more likely a bounty hunter or rouge/lone wolf sort of character. Though I haven't read dark disciple so I'm not too familiar with her character arc in that book.

Yeap it's the snake from the Concept art which I'm surprised Generation Tech didn't catch onto, it also is cut in a way that doesn't show who exactly she's fighting/implies that it's the clones but we know that Filoni especially is good at cutting things to not give away everything.

To be fair in legends, she did survive the clone wars, barely.
When death is no longer final, something is taken away from the self sacrifice of dying for a greater cause.
Even though I'm delighted to see such an iconic character like Ventress again, I have to agree with you.
This is what ruined the appeal of whole franchises for me, like Dragonball (Z/ GT/ Super). Because why should I feel invested in (the the wellbeing of) characters, when they can be brought back from death at basically any time? In the beginning this was a tolerable mechanic in Dragonball, since it was bound to a clear rule, namely that any individual who died could be revived only once. But when they started to kill off main characters a second time, they came up with lots of cheap explanations of how this rule suddenly doesn't apply anymore (These are Dragonballs from another planet/ These are new Dragonballs/ These are Super-Dragonballs).
Which ultimately killed my investment into the whole thing.

I still do not know how will they explain her return since they explained that Dark Disciple is still canon. They either have to retcon a bit of Dark Disciple or make some kind of "She did die but she also lived" excuse.

Or just throw it out entirely I'm 100% behind that because man I HATE Dark Disciple for shitting over the Republic Comics and ignoring my childhood via a story that was built up over the course of three years. And still is one of the best depicitions of the Clone Wars ever.
@@russianoverkill3715 I already mentioned they may have retcon Dark Disciple a bit for this plot in my comment. They announced recently Dark Disciple is still canon and they will explain why she is still alive but I do not see it being a perfect 100% on Dark Disciple unless they retcon specific parts to make sense or make up some strange excuse for how she somehow survived.
The fact that she died off screen in a book always felt wrong to me. Her arc should have been resolved on screen.

The Clone Wars had many outstanding characters ,and Asajj was one of its best. Her Charisma, the chemistry she had with others. The way they took a villain and made you feel bad for her lot in life. Then began a path of redemption. Beautiful story. Forgot she had died, but now that you mention it that is odd she came back. I hope they explain it well. I'll at least give them that chance.

@jamariojackson4289 I'm not going to give it a chance because Disney Star wars has continuously messed up for nearly 10 years straight. The only exception was andor, and that's because andor was just barely regarded by Disney and that let the writers and Tony Gilroy work their magic.

I also disagree with the original comment on tcw ventress being well written. She's not. She's a mess, like the rest of tcw. The eu handled her with more respect and care then tcw ever did, and didn't have to randomly make her a nightsister for no reason.
For anyone wondering Brad Rau on the SW site stated “We don't want to spoil anything, but want fans to know that any new storytelling with Ventress will align with the events of Star Wars: Dark Disciple.” So take that as you will.
Apparently they also loved Asajj, but when you love a charachter, you let them die, because you either die as a good charachter or you live long enough to see yourself become a bad charachter.
Ps: This ruins the entire emotional part of the novel (at least most of it).

honestly one of the rare times i can accept a character being alive for the sake of it. being offed in a book felt so lazy, especially knowing how much content we missed with the cancellation of the clone wars before its end.
tbh, I fell like alot of "Cannon" books and comics should be taken with a grain of salt it can always be retconned in favor for a movie or show just look at how they retconned the Kanan jarrus comics. *BUT* am actually glad ventress came back. even though it messes up the continuity

Lets just say Dooku is shit at killing people that he should have killed; but then again Dooku didn't take the options he had to Rule of Two Palpatine which honestly makes him an idiot as only idiot would have blindly followed Sidious's plans if Maul had been in his place Maul would have stabbed Sidious in the back without hesistation because Maul was the only true Sith Sidious ever trained.

The final moment for Ventress in the novel (which I won’t write here for those who haven’t read it yet and want to) can be interpreted as a possibility that she could return. I think Filoni definitely has what happened to her in the novel in mind since her appearance in the BB trailer is the same as how she looked on the cover and in art related to the novel, she even has her yellow saber now.

I used to think that Asaj Ventres was a reverse Darth Vader. Raised in the dark turned to the light. Hard core enough to fight anakin multiple times and survive. Not many can claim that, it's more like she trained him to be that good, slowly raising eachothers levels until he could take down doohku. Palpatine noticed her potential, ordered her eliminated.
The father the son and the daughter, Asaj could take the son's place for the use of the dark side, with the destructive powers under control. 😅
To be honest Ventress was one of my favorite characters since I first saw her in the 2003 cartoon. She showed off force abilities that wowed me even to this day, went toe to toe with Dooku nearly no-holds-barred, and was this mysterious yet brutal assassin. The Clone Wars series definitely removed the mysterious aspect of her, but she was still a brutal and efficient commander/assassin. Her character arc with the Night Sisters is one of my favorite based on her personal journey and the overarching plot of Mother Talzin’s revenge on Sidious. Seeing her as a bounty hunter made me crave more of her development, especially post-force-choke by your friendly neighborhood Darth Vader in waiting. That was some straight up Count Dooku/ Darth Sidious stuff right there that probably had her getting out of dodge!
So when I hear she got killed in the Dark Disciple novel it sort of broke my heart. Here was this character that I loved seeing on screen, a character with complexity and abilities that we rarely see in Star Wars these days. Book was good, but it is a pattern I am noticing in media where all the really good/interesting characters are sort of tied up off-screen to make way for newer characters. This will tie into yet another habit I will address later. An example of this first habit off the top of my head is actually monitor 343 Guilty Spark or the Didact (both from the Halo franchise). Good characters, ton of potential, ton of established screen time and promise for more, taken out in the pages instead. As much as it bothers me that isn’t really my point.
My point is Disney has always had a very fast and loose interpretation of it’s own canon from day one. We saw it when they separated from Legends, we saw it with the sequel trilogy, and we saw it when they started bringing Legends characters back and declaring certain aspects of Legends to be part of Disney Canon (Let’s not even talk about their beef with Fractal Sponge and the fandom art community).
It would make sense in a universe like Warhammer 40K where the lore is intentionally vague, contradictory, and easily “retcon-able” since day one and explained as so due to in-universe reasons (Inquisition cover ups, faulty technology, a jealous tech priest). But that isn’t Star Wars.
As much as I enjoyed Filoni trying to keep the essence of Star Wars alive….it seems like he is the only one so much as the screen is concerned. He has his strengths, but he also has his flaws which we have seen time and time again. I will never dispute that he is passionate about Star Wars. He has proven it time and time again. But having essentially one guy trying to carry the entire Disney Canon to television is a pretty big demand! Considering how much of a mess Disney Canon is compared to Legends I can see why he would want to bring Ventress back. Hell, if you told me a few years back I would have been ecstatic. But this is just reinforcing a second habit Disney and other film/television media have: Reintroducing already recognized and beloved characters and see if that prestige helps carry them, even if they have to write themselves out of a jury-rigged saw trap to do it. The amount of times Star Wars alone has done this to mediocre effect has been grating me for years.
I really hope Ventress regains her time in the spotlight. But until then I am going to remain cautious.
Side note: If they actually do the force sensitive clone thing to bring her back I am out. It was a poor execution in the 9th movie, it was a head scratcher in the 2nd Force Unleashed game, and it will remain a bad idea now just based on the bad precedent it would set if/when handled incorrectly.
To be fair 343 Guilty Spark's story ended up getting quite a bit of depth that fleshed him out in a more interesting way than some annoying talking metal ball. And it's not like him surviving wasn't plausible.
The didact is a fair point though. They brought him back in a comic just to kill off 4 of the dwindling spartan IIs, only to fucking die in the same comic issue. That they still haven't address his character since then makes it all the more pointless.

@@firefly9838 Same here, although in the legends version, I didn’t like the fact that she had cybernetic implants/modifications within her body in legends. I like to think that after she escaped the clone wars she got rid of her cybernetic implants and bought new organs from the black market.

Thanks for summing up the story to dark disciple, i never read it and was under the impression she was still alive at the end of the clone wars, so i was hyped to see her in the trailer lol. perhaps they just move her death to this season so we see it on screen.

I think the trailer is intentionally cut to make us think that Ventress is working against the Bad Batch here. I can see her helping them out to rescue Omega.

I felt the same thing when I saw the trailer yesterday.
I seriously thought I was going crazy thinking that bringing ventress back wasn’t a great idea. Her death in dark disciple was handled very well. Death is starting to feel unimportant in Star Wars. They’re starting to do this way too much.
Maul was the one I thought was handled fantastically. Phasma was another I was happy to see come back, (even though they didn’t do much with her.)
And Ik that apparently there were plans at one point to bring ventress back during the Resistance show, it was a good decision to not do that. While I’m sure they’re gonna come up with some excuse as to her return it’s going to at least retcon the novel.
Not to mention, in the novel, she was dead for a few days, and her body was prepared for burial before she was set to rest in a pool on dathomir, so that’s about as dead as you can get. And night sister magic doesn’t reanimate bodies as healthy and full, only as little more than zombies
A few days? Try a month, apparently. Vos didn’t perform the burial rite until he’d gone through extensive 1-on-1 therapy with Yoda. It’s even noted in the final chapter that it was a rough month after Asajj died.
Wish they’d bring Phasma back again in some capacity. At this point she’s the only character I can think of that I’d be happy to see return from a seemingly deadly fate.
Though I was glad he came back and enjoyed his continuing story arc, Maul's return was far-fetched. No one is surving getting sliced in half and falling into oblivion down a shaft.
Ventress could have been better than all of those inquisitors
The problem with the Inquisitors is that their goal is to kill Jedi, and as they can't kill the main characters, they're doomed to fail. Cad Bane worked because he had goals like stealing things or freeing prisoners, and that let him accomplish those goals at least part of the way before the good guys could stop him. It also helps that due to the episodes being in the wrong order his first appearance is him kidnapping the whole senate and rescuing Zirro, with the episode where he's kidnapping C-3PO and the episode where Zirro gets killed and he has to run away not showing up until after his reputation is cemented in the viewer's mind.

As far a I'm concerned the primary medium of a franchise or universe determines the canon. The movies have ultimate say, then the shows, then the games and books.
You could argue that since Clone Wars is in the animated show category that the animated shows are the primary canon over movies though. But animation definitely comes before books in this case.

This 100% feels wrong Dave filoni has been changing a lot of things from the Eu and Disney cannon which has been rubbing me the wrong way and causing a lot of inconsistencies in star wars I love Dave filioni and grew up watching clone wars and rebels but this is just something I noticed
Dark disciple is still canon, this isnt like when they put kanan in the first episode of BB for a shitty cameo that retconed the kanan comics
Disney themselves have been changing their own canon, from the books to screen. Well before Dave became essentially the Kevin Feige of Star Wars, at the least with Dave. Dave atleast tries to acknowledge the book events more accurately than completely alter it's path. Remember, Dave could only do so much when the story board group ran by Pablo Hidalgo included Clone Force 99 in the origin of Kaanan Jarus when they weren't their before and he had that "As long as point a goes to point b" nonesense
As far as I'm concerned this is one of the good changes, Dark Disciple flat out took a dump on the Republic Comics which are infinitely better and so it being squished is well deserved teach it to trod over the canon I liked.

Yep considering Ventress has taken two collusal falls that should have killed her but didn't I'm going to say her surviving one is nothing out of the ordinary I mean Anakin dropped her into two different massive pits with no visable bottom yet she survived both of those falls

@@jesusjuice7401 We also literally saw Maul cut in half, and the Emperor thrown into a bottomless pit and then explode in a wave of Dark Side energy.
Yet, Maul came back and played a huge role in the latter half of TCW, and the Emperor rose again, thanks to Rian Johnson killing every plotline and the big bad from J.J. Abrams set-up.

According to their website the events will alling to the dark disciple´s ending, so I still have hope they did not retconn it YET.

I agree that character resurrections happen far too much. That being said it always rubbed me the wrong way Ventress was killed offscreen. So I’m fine with her being back.
