Typo in your terminal command. Should read: sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

When you erase the external USB does it delete its entire files ? Also is it mandatory to download el capitan ?

U don't need to have a usb to factory restore el capitan... Just turn off computer and press command R then erase the hard drive.... You made it more complicated then it needed to be.

Great, clear video, though OMG, what a complex procedure compared with other operating systems. My situation is unique:
A friend wants to give me his 2014 MacBook Air, and asked me to research factor reset. He is not going to want to go through that complicated procedure, and I doubt El Capitan is even available, as Apple doesn't want us restoring old computers.
Is there a way to just securely erase all his data?

Whats the difference betwen factory install with USB and without?
Three steps... Restart PC... Press Command R... Reinstall MAC OS... Done... This is a good workaround video but there is a much easier way....

why do you have to go through all that why can you just reinstall el capitan instead of using a memory stick?
great video indeed, wanted to hard reset for long but just did a OTA update... and one query, what happens if we name our pen drive something instead of untitled, won't it work and if yes can you please explain why .... just a query, no problems with naming

I have a iMac in a remote location which works under a proxy network. So your other method will not work for me. If I go with this method will it do all the process of the boot time without internet, means after creating the bootable usb will it take care without internet.

Better to use USB 3 pendrive for making it bootable using terminal. It took 11mins. One USB 2 it took around 45mins.

+Darby M yeah yr right buddy. BootCamp assistant did not work for me. I tried everything i could do my end and then had to go to the genius bar @ apple. Dude, was well helpful. listened to what i wanted to achieve and gave me time to double check all my back ups and clones before using their own hook up to go thru their own back door to erase the whole drive. Error while reinstall the os x
Hello! Thank you for the video really helpful. I get an error when i try to erase the Macintosh HD. It fails to erase the hard drive giving the message "Erase process has failed. Press Done to continue." It unmount the disk then. Could you please help me out. I'm using an iMac 5k 3TB Fusion Drive. I'd updated using the App Store, It was running slow and the safari app was crashing, so decided to clean install using your method.

+Carlos Monti If you do not have "Install OS X El Capitan" file on application folder, then you get those error, just put the downloaded OS into Application folder then it works

Somehow my DNS settings change and WiFi stops working, I have to restart to make it work again. Anyone with the same issue?
Setup ur router again, forget network and try again else reinstall osx ! Hope this helps
I have tried that, changed bands, forgot and joined again did everything, it just doesn't work. WiFi works normally fine but in a few hours it would change DNS.

well yah it does, together with all your files. The thing is, if you back up your files then copy it to you newly reformated drive or laptop, the virus may come back together with your files.
