How to Factory Reset Mac OS X EL CAPITAN

- This is how to factory reset your mac on OS X El Capitan. This trick comes in handy if your mac is running slow, has issues, is changing hands, or is being sold. This method will completely wipe your mac back to the base installation of OS X.
Remember to backup your data! Making note of your apple ID may help with a smoother reset process. When you are ready, follow this tutorial. Hopefully it'll help you.

What do you do if your version of OS X isn't available on the mac app store or your mac won't run lastest software.
I have a problem. I got to the step to reinstall OS X but when I press continue it’s saying Could not find installation information for this machine.
Had an old computer I gave to a family member who really wanted it and I kept trying to factory reset but it wouldn't take becacuse I was using the current method. Thanks to you even 6 years later this video's still helping people. Just wanted to say thanks!

do I need to reinstall the El Capitan OS? or is all my data erased alreadyt that point? I just want to sell my Mac for parts

Mine did the same. I tried entering my Apple ID and it didn't work. Then we entered my husbands and it started downloading. Thank God!!
Try another Apple ID you could have potentially used in the past or when purchasing your Mac.

Is the date on your laptop correct? Mine wasn't, so I had to boot up a special device thingie to correct it, and once I did, it downloaded properly

Did anyone find the solution to this? I’m stuck in the same spot and the place I’m trying to give the computer too won’t take it without the OS X El Capitan installed on it. It continues to ask for my Apple ID info but I don’t want to download anything of mine to this computer. I just want it fresh and ready for a new user.

Installing OS X using the internet recovery without erasing your HD first, would not erase your current home directory data (Documents, Desktop, Photos, Movies, Music,~/Library etc subdirectories), I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it will only nuke all the other root level folders like /System, /Library, /dev, /etc and so on.

I know this post is pretty old, but hopefully you can (will - fingers crossed) help. First, though, THANKS for this vid, it's great! Now to the issue: Mine is a pretty ancient desktop. When I go to download and restore OS X (eligibility will be verified with Apple) I get a yellow exclamation mark with "a required download is missing". I'm guessing this is because this version isn't anywhere in to be found...? Is this the ONLY way to permanently erase data? Any suggestions?!?! Please and thank you.

Also want to ask about recovery data from Time Machine. At the moment my 500Gb hard drive is splitted into 2 partitions (250Gb) which are backed up with Time Machine. Following your guide, I want to restore to factory reset and reinstallare Macos but leaving the hard drive unpartitioned. My question is: will Time Machine be able to restore data if not founding 2nd partition? Sorry but I can't explain better than this. Thank you

It doesn't need an usb with the OS or the installation CD, right? Can I do it on my iMac without any cd or usb?

I'm not sure you can. Apple upgraded it to Sierra. When you up grade it goes back to Sierra.

my macbook (mid 2012) will not restart or reinstall the OS. I followed just as you explained and now it just keeps circling back to OS X could not be installed on your computer. Below that it says "No packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again." It continues to come back to this window over and over. Please, can you help me??? I just wanted to erase it and start fresh and give it to my son. Please help??

When I did the erase, the Macintosh HD words on the left hand bar did not disappear and I did not return back to the main screen. Then, after trying everything, I had to restart and then a spinning globe came up. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
It just keeps showing a lock when I command+r and doesn't show anything else what do I do now?

This doesn't work for me :( Everytime i hold cmd + R it just goes into a screen with a lock on it and asks for a password.
It’s been efi locked, you need a tool you can find online to unlock it

If it doesn’t work for you, you will need to open the terminal and change the date based on when the OS was released.

Mine days I have a recovery HD- and when I click the Mac HD it goes to Apple ID sign in- not the full reset

My wifi is really really slow! Is there any way I can do this without downloading the installation again? It'll take more than 3 days for me to finish this entire process...
