100 Day Project: Not-So-Obvious Things I've Learned So Far

- TAKE 2 - REPOSTING WITHOUT ACCIDENTAL MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND THIS TIME 🤣🤣🤣
After a several year break, I'm doing the 100 Day Project again (the100dayproject.org) and excited to have a project idea that will challenge me (to keep showing up for 100 days straight) and keep me creating. The goal is to create something that only takes 5-10 minutes a day and I'm all about achievable goals! My plan is to use about 3 collage scraps for each collage and who knows, I might go crazy with it and add some Neocolor crayons or pen lines sometimes. I'm going to go with #100daysofsimplecollage so if you'd like to follow my progress, follow that hashtag and follow me on Instagram ( jackieschomburgart) - between the two of those, hopefully Instagram will show my posts to you every so often...? 🤣🤣🤣
Are you doing the 100 day project too? Let me know what you'll be working on and what your hashtag is so we can all cheer you on!
Materials used:
Strathmore Mixed Media paper 18"x24" - amzn.to/3UKw0LI
Color shaper - amzn.to/3OL7NB0
Collage paper
Gloss medium - NovaColorPaints.com

"If it takes 5 minutes, it's not art; I haven't suffered enough yet." Amen - I frequently feel the same way. I love that you have stayed with the #100dayproject 💜
❤️❤️❤️
New subbie here! For the record, i LOVE what you have been making! When i was growing up, my parents were extremely big on not giving up on stuff, or jumping around between hobbies. As a result i self-censored anything I didn’t think i’d be great at, because who wants to be stuck forever doing something they suck at?! Anyway i couldn’t draw and we weren’t an “arty” family, so I haven’t picked up an art material since i was 14 and i’m 50 this year. At which point i discovered abstract painting and i cannot shout loudly enough about how it’s changed my life. I live for it. I so wish that everyone got introduced to more creative options at an early age!
Hello! That’s so interesting about the self-censoring you did to not get stuck where you didn’t want to be. I’m very lucky that I was allowed to quit things because my mom wanted me to be able to try things even if I might not like them. I hope you are proud of yourself for having the courage and moxie to try art again as an adult. 🙌🏻❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 What a gift to give yourself the freedom to try new things (and the permission to walk away from things that didn’t make you feel as good) ❤️❤️❤️ I’m excited for your new adventures in art - please do keep in touch and let me know how it’s going! I’m so happy to have you here as part of this community! ❤️
Isn’t it ridiculous how hard we are on ourselves! I needed to hear “just do it”!
I’m so glad! ❤️❤️❤️
In every way we are! Glad to be here with everyone 💓
I really enjoyed today's video, I enjoy them all, but today it helped me feel ok at my current simple level of expression. I'm not an artist, I don't expect to become an artist. In my elder years I just 'dabble', creating just to enjoy the colors, shapes and textures. I don't expect to produce anything profound or even 'wall worthy', but I desire to assemble parts to please my eye. Thank you for your encouragement and excellent examples.
You are so welcome! Keep showing up, keep dabbling, and keep having fun! ❤️❤️❤️
I’m with you (the elder years 🤣)… it’s good for our brains! I just got the book Your Brain On Art… hoping to start reading it soon
@allthumbs3792, you ARE an artist! 🥰
THRILLED that I was able to watch all of the pieces come together and hear "Jackie's Words of Wisdom" to close out my weekend! So much great work and so much great wisdom. Loved every moment! ♥♥♥
How is it that you always have the kindest words to share? Thanks, Paul! ❤️❤️❤️
Yes yes yes, we need to be as kind to ourselves as we are to others.
❤️❤️❤️
Wrinkled paper creates texture visually. Same with Gelli prints. The paper is flat but depth is visible with the layer of designs or stencils. It’s what makes it so rewarding.
❤ this video! I'm adding it to my top three 'Best of Jackie' videos. I love the creative freedom you exhibit and the finished pieces!
Yay, thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
This video is extremely inspiring and just what I needed.
It`s what art should be. It shows the freedom and joy of creating art intuitively that we all were born with. We had it as children but lost it on the way growing up.
Thank you very much, Jackie❤
Well said! ❤️
Thank you Jackie! This was a joy to watch and very inspiring and motivating!! Also glad no music in background- your voice is all we needed!!
Thanks Marie! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
First video in a long time where I didn’t watch/listen at 2x.
Life IS too short to waste it on self censoring.
I was so “blocked” the other day but I knew “I just had to do the thing”. Gosh I was even so worked up about starting a concertina sketchbook that I forced myself to make one out of cheaper paper and paint/draw my emotions. Gosh it felt good!
And then, like nothing had ever happened, to cause me to feel this way, I went on to do another prototype for something I was avoiding but very interested in, and definitely not palatable popular “like and subscribe” inducing art 😂
Thanks for the honest discussion… I am waaaaay past waiting for permission, even from myself.😊
Yes!! Keep up the good work! Do the thing YOUR way ❤️❤️❤️
You are so right! Thank you for these encouraging and so inspiring words!
Best regards from Austria
Bernadette
Glad it was helpful! ❤️❤️❤️
Oh Jackie, I have NEVER identified with what you’ve stated so well & so deeply! I started this challenge and then got EXTREMELY frustrated & gave up….but, I’m now ready to take up the glue, paper & brush again! Thank you for sharing your thought and art!
❤️❤️❤️ Hooray for getting back at it! No need to be tied to a challenge if it’s stifling. Just reassess what you were missing/had too much of when you were frustrated and begin again. You’ve got this! ❤️💪🏼❤️
Great. I am doing the 100 day project too. Small collages with fabric, papers and stitching. I do videos of it every week.
Wonderful! ❤️
So sweet how you share your thoughts and show all of us the way you are dealing with your art as well as your self. You show your vulnerability and that’s is POWER! ❤
Aww, thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
✨💖✨
❤️❤️❤️
These are so gooood! 🔥
Thanks Maggie! ❤️❤️❤️
So happy you shared this with us! I recently had a breakthrough. I had been working so hard, digging deep and trying to express my “story” through painting alone. Meanwhile, I have little cork pinboards and piles of scraps, samples, and other various collected materials, that I love together, all over my house …. Um, yeah… I just figured it out: collage. ❤Love your work and your videos.
Hooray for finding new inspiration in familiar materials! I’m excited for your new adventure - let me know how it goes!! ❤️
It does not come easy ! It´s like a jazzsolo - the result of all your work up till now !
Absolutely! It's all about the journey and the effort! Keep jazzing it up! 🎷🎶
I had a workshop with a wonderful 80 years old painter. She kept telling us: “ 1 year of collage = 10 years of painting”.
Oh I LOVE that!! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Hi Jackie - I am also using these cards for the 100 day project. I am going to make a hundred and then stop because sometimes I make 2-3 a day with whatever is around. But strangely I am not into collage, don’t like magazine shine paper and don’t have a scrap bin… I don’t know maybe I haven’t tried with the junk around my husband’s table. Stay well. Jackie
Huh. Perhaps you’re just not in your magazine collage era right now. Keep experimenting - wrapping paper, junk mail, old maps, homework from a kid, old books, etc. are all fun options to try. And if you’re interested in making your own collage paper, I’m teaching a Collage Paper 101 Zoom class in April: jackieschomburg.com/workshops I’d love to have you there ❤️
Right... not my magazine era...!!! OK. Taking your advice. J
Love this so much! Going to use this with our art collective meeting. Thank you so much!
❤️❤️❤️
Always so inspiring, Jackie! Why are we so hard on ourselves?! I am not currently doing the 100 day project but you may have convinced me! I can make my own rules and start today! Why not try! Thank you for the pep talk!
Yes!! 🙌🏻 ❤️❤️❤️
I am not RUclips savvy. I think I added a comment but now can’t find it and have no clue to see if there is a reply?🤣. I’m interested in the challenge/give away and I’m doing the 100 day project as well! Great motivation to do something each day. Loved this video by the way ❤️
Thanks so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Jackie for the inspiration.
For uk people, Golden soft gel gloss is a great glue.
Good to know! 🤗
Also, I'd love a challenge to see if I could win a Jackie Original!
Yay!
loved your message!! and your art!
Thanks Cynthia! ❤️❤️❤️
Love what you’re doing. I throw out my scraps regularly, and throw out small bits as I go. I don’t hesitate these days. They’ll make more paper…
Thank you! (And as for paper…I’m not there yet! 🤣🤣🤣)
Really enjoyed this episode- so much beautiful colour and textures- you made me feel interested in more collage and now I wanna start collecting papers ! What a joy to see these wonderful creations and listen to your thoughts:) and an invite to receive one is always welcomed !
❤️❤️❤️
I'm doing the 100 day project - also doing collages...but I'm not posting in case I don't complete it 😞 Cowardly I know. However last year I tried to do the 100 day project stitching every day and very quickly fell behind - so far I have only had to do two collages on one day on three occasions - I'm not beating myself up about it. (Day 30 as I write this.) Many of my collages are not pretty but I'm learning loads and some I'm really liking. Thanks for sharing - it takes courage 🙂
❤️❤️❤️ You’re only in contest with yourself - share if you want to. Don’t share if you don’t. The most important part is that you keep showing up 🌈🌈🌈
Great video. Good speed and I appreciate your not talking over background music. I enjoy your thought process. I work in a similar format, but glue them onto blank greeting cards. The recipient can frame them if they like.
I love that! (And I have definitely framed little pieces of art that other artists have sent me! ❤️)
This was so fun and inspiring Jackie. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
I'm really expanding my collage and art with organic play. Thank you for being a wonderful teacher! I'll be getting Julia Cameron's book!
❤️❤️❤️
These were all so fabulous and fun to watch as you created them! Thanks, Jackie!! xoxo
Thank you ever so much for reuploading this video I really appreciate it.
I really enjoyed the whole video. 💜
Thank YOU for letting me know I missed turning the hyper-speed music down on a few days’ videos! I typically use Hyperlapse, which doesn’t record sound. For a few days I used iPhone’s Timelapse setting, which apparently DOES record sound at chipmunk speed 🤣 Always learning… 😅🤗❤️
I'm doing collage for the 100 day project as well so was glad to see your video. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Thank you.
You're welcome! ☺️
so fun to watch you...these are great...you can't quit now that you're got all of us invested in seeing what you're doing! Is it CVP that you signed up for? I took it last year, did the free workshop again this year and couldn't say no to a 2nd year of CVP. I started my journal and have committed to at least 5 minutes a day to paint, no judgement, just learning to be free❤
Haha! Guess I’ll have to keep going then 🤣🤣🤣 And yes! I’m FINALLY doing CVP - I’m excited and also feeling pressure from all areas of life right now (which probably means it’s the PERFECT time to do CVP because it will keep me focused on creating art) ❤️ So excited to know that you’re doing it with me!
I enjoyed this and your encouragement so much!
I’m so glad! ❤️❤️❤️
Love these pieces and would be thrilled to hang one in my studio! Please keep up the good work as your are so inspirational!
Yay! Thanks so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Quite interesting…enjoyed …
I'm glad!
Wonderful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Your post has been up for 24 hours and I've already listened to it 3 times. What wonderful reminders to sustain our self-confidence and to inspire us to keep making art every day! Yes, I love challenges. I find them very motivating and would adore having one of your 100 pieces. Thanks for the great advice.
Aww, that is so nice to hear - thanks for letting me know! ❤️❤️❤️
Is it weird that I am terrified of doing the 100 day challenge? I know I am not good at follow through and I hate making a goal and not achieving it so then I don't try. This was an inspiring video. I kept saying to myself "we could totally do this". I want to do it but then anxiety and fear... so will I try it? I need to conquer my self doubt and silence the little voice in my head that says but what if...
IF it’s something you’d like to try (absolutely no pressure to do so…) Im learning that the secret is to make the goal *incredibly* achievable each day. This is a marathon. No need to make each day of the marathon an additional challenge too. Find the simplest, least-effortful thing that sounds interesting to you - then make it easier to check the box (“glue three pieces of paper together” instead of “make gorgeous 3-paper collage”). And honestly, if the 100 days is adding pressure - do a 5 day challenge :) if you liked that, pat yourself on the back and celebrate and/or try adding another 5 days. The key is making it achievable. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Jackie 😮 Again! I loved all of these. And yeh, I'm about to turn 65 and i haven't got time to concern myself with how other ppl perceive me. If i want blue hair I'm going to have it.😂😂
YES, Linda! ❤️💪🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It‘s so relaxing and inspiring to watch your collages emerging and listen to your thoughts at the same time, what a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing! I set myself the challenge on december 31st last year to do „one piece of art a day in 2024“ meaning a painting, a drawing, a collage… I mostly work in my sketchbooks and until now I only skipped 4 days, which is fine. I am totally surprised that the outcomes are SO different but that I like almost all of them. They remind me of the mood I was in on that day or of something I have experienced. It‘s like writing in a journal but more fun to look at afterwards😁 I mostly did that to get more practice and to overcome the demand on myself that everything I produce has to be kind of perfect. That works better than I was hoping- and today, thanks to you, it will be collage!
What a wonderful project you’ve assigned yourself! And how wonderful that you’ve prioritized it so well! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I do love the memory recall of journalling/sketch booking and looking back through the pages to remember who was nearby, which coffee shop chair I sat in, etc. It really is remarkable ❤️ I’ve found quantity, consistency, and keeping the stakes low (inexpensive materials) to help me loosen up. You’re well on your way! Go, Uta, go! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for cheering!😄🔥
Always!! ❤️
Great to watch many of the your first month’s 100 day collage project. I’ve been collecting collage materials to use elsewhere, but this makes me want to start a collage project similar to yours. in fact, I think I signed out for the 100 day art project. I was distracted by others things, and I guess I didn’t think out how I could make it work, but your lovely demonstrations have helped me realize that I could use all my scrap materials in a way similar to yours. Exciting not to know exactly where this might lead. Just so important to try do make a different arrangement of shapes and colors every day. Thank you for sharing❤
However you decide to use your scraps will be the right way for you ❤️ So happy to have been a little part of your excitement around your collage materials! ❤️
Congratulations on your first month of simple collage! I've been enjoying them and I really like seeing them now and hearing your thoughts on the experience and creating in general. I'm looking forward to the next class!
Thanks, Laura! The daily IG reels have been the hardest parts so far! I keep forgetting until midnight and then I’m too tired to deal with it🤣🤣🤣 Can’t wait till the April Workshops! ❤️
This was great! I like having all the collages in one place to watch. Yes I’d be interested in a challenge to get one of your lovely small collages. Watching your videos is helping with my confidence. Thank you!😊
So glad to hear it! ❤️❤️❤️
So true! Something that didn’t take hours or multiple sessions to complete can’t be called art. Not true!
Loved loved this.
Thank you, Laura! ❤️
Jackie, what brand is your medium? Love the squirt bottle
I use Nova Color Paint’s gloss medium - but I just pour it into an empty condiment container squeeze bottle 🤗
Interested
I'm new here & I'm your new friend❤ love what you have done❣️I'm going to try this. Thanks for the inspiration 🦋👍🌹I just finished watch this whole video on tv now letting it run on my phone. Would love to have some sent to my home. You are so creative. Do you to scrap swaps as well? Would love to swap scraps with you. My address is in my about section of my channel.
Thanks and welcome! 🥰
Would love to join a challenge and get a little project
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and insights as you journey through the 100 days project. So many golden nuggets in your comments that I have pondered over and struggled with. Giving ourselves permission to make the art that feels good to us, regardless of whether or not it is “good enough” to anyone else, is a message every artist needs to hear. 🩵
You are so welcome - That's really nice to hear, thank YOU!
