Explore Pattern, Value, & Scale with a Grid Journal

  • I wanted to explore an orb/corn on the cob pattern and see how I could play with different variations of scale, pattern, and composition. The fastest, easiest way for me to do this was to use a grid journal.
    I’ve previously done this with taped-off squares but never just tracing squares. I saw artist Kellee Wynne (www.kelleewynn...) tracing the squares and loved how it turned out so I've been using this method ever since.
    Did you know that when it comes to discovering your own artistic style, the QUANTITY of your artwork matters more than the QUALITY? We develop our styles by making lots and lots of artwork! This warm up is a fast, fun way to make 18 tiny paintings in one sitting. This allows you to try out many different compositions and combinations at the same time. Plus, they're pretty cute too.
    You can use any colors and materials you choose for this exercise, the important part is to experiment with putting different patterns, colors, and textures together. This exercise can be used on its own as a collage warm up, a way to try out new combinations of colors/patterns, as an art journal page, and BONUS can be easily packed up for art on the go.
    Materials used: sketchbook, collage paper, tissue paper, Pitt Pens, acrylic paint, and a color shaper.

    In my house, the smallest snippets of papers (and fabric) are called Snibblies, to differentiate them from Scraps proper, which anyone else would toss, but we know contain the most magic.

    I love how the collage paper still looks organic despite the fragmentation. I wonder, have you ever taken one of these small experimental squares to a bigger substrate? I always try new things when I watch your work. Just catching up with your videos. 💫💥💞Happy week!

      Thanks Treezy! I haven’t tried to recreate a small square as a larger work, but I definitely let the small squares influence my larger work. For me, trying to recreate something (even just the shape) removes some (all?) of the magic. I do find it very useful to help me decide how to scale up to a larger panel though ❤️

    You mentioned a homemade wet pallette in this video. I have no idea what that is. Can you explain or maybe point me to a video of yours explaining it. I think I get the gist of it from its name, but I also, frequently, assume wrong 🤣

      @jackieschomburgart  Год назад

      Hi! Thanks so much for watching!
      The pallet I used is an enamel pan (could be any kind of pan that is water tight), I add a few layers of wet paper towels, then top with a sheet of baking parchment. I squeeze my paints directly on to the parchment and the paint stays usable longer because of the other moisture underneath 🤗

    i also feel really drawn to circles/ovals/orbs so i decided to paint along with you and make some of my own and uh, the anxiety i felt just moving paint around was unreal. it's clear to me how hard it is to get back in after being out of the studio for a week just working on this with you. thanks for giving me something to vibe with so i could feel a kinship of art making and somewhere to come back to as like a touchstone while creating and trying to push through my terrible anxieties and fears and getting back into making art after a break.
    i've only just put my collage bits down as i'm typing this, so i'm only about 7 minutes into your video, but i'm loving yours so far and though the preview image is a spoiler for how they'll all turn out, i look forward to getting through the entire video to see how they get there and how different mine turn out as i work alongside you with a different color palette.
    i also like to make my grid journals look nice across the whole thing while simultaneously focusing on the individual compositions. it can be hard!! thank goodness for kelly wynne teaching us all the tracing a square version of making grid journals!! it seems so obvious in retrospect but we were really all out here measuring and using tape before lmao
