CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Braddock (Russell Crowe) stays strong as he fights the champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) while his manager and family nervously watch and listen on.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true story of an athlete who achieved his greatest success against the most daunting odds of his life is brought to the screen in this historical drama. In the 1920s, James Braddock (Russell Crowe) from Bergen, NJ, was a promising contender in professional boxing; he had strength, spirit, and tenacity, but the combination of a serious hand injury and a 1929 defeat in a bout with light heavyweight champ Tommy Loughran sent his career into a serious tailspin. As Braddock's career in the ring dried up, the Great Depression put a stake through the heart of America's economy, and Braddock found himself working at the New York docks for pitiful wages as he tried to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and three children. Desperate for money, Braddock turned to his former trainer and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), who was unexpectedly able to scare up a bout for him, battling John Griffin at Madison Square Garden. While conventional wisdom had it that Braddock was too old, out of shape, and out of practice to have any chance of winning, he defeated Griffin, and continued beating his opponents with a powerful left hook that had been intensified by years of punishing dock work. In a nation desperate for good news, Braddock's surprising comeback became a tonic to struggling workers and unemployed people, and all eyes were on Braddock when in 1935 he took on powerful heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) in what was both literally and figuratively the fight of his life.

In real life Max Baer was a good man. He did kill a man in the ring, but he visited his wife and was crying uncontrollably when he heard the news. He never wanted to kill anyone, and felt horrible about it.
Thanks for letting us know DaMarcus! That's interesting.
he was also a dirty fighter especially in his fight with Braddock.
It's a movie, nor a documentary. That's why it's BASED on a true story, and not a true story.
Of course he was a witty man how can you not be being the dad of jethro clampett
TacoDudeBro it was the 98% accurace besides max Baer
We watched this in class (10th grade History covering the Great Depression) and my teacher explained that Baer was a good man in real life. Like you said...they needed a villain.
ChizAfterHours Would you mind me that teachers name?
Same dude
@@AquaPJ what teacher did u have??
We also watched this in my 9th grade history class. Our teacher never told us that Baer was actually a nice guy and I’m just now learning that from reading comments.
Stoll?
This movie was flat out one of the best I've ever seen. The only thing they exaggerated was Baer's character; he wasn't an asshole like displayed in the movie. He was suffering as well from the Great Depression like Braddock, fighting for his own family and his own life. Which is why Baer's real-life grandkids tried to ban this movie because of how they displayed their grandfather.
+Angel Salas
I know his character was exaggerated, but that is Hollywood for you. They had to sell him as the villain antagonist to the viewers to build up more sympathy and emotion towards Braddock. I can understand why Baer's Grandkids wouldn't like it, but again, it's just a movie and a phenomenal one at that.
+ISirWarLocKI I think the movie would have been just as good, possibly even better, if they had portrayed his character honestly. Think about it, two struggling fighters have to put aside their friendship to provide for their families. they could have made it a whole "does blood run thicker than water?" theme, ya know?
Angel Salas ikr
Patrick Mikhail They weren't really friends either. I think they respected each other as boxers but they didn't really have any close bond.
ISirWarLocKI bullshit!! they dont have sell anyone as a villain, look at rocky movie, is apollo a villain??
"Jimmy is still standing. and he's not only standing, he's moving forward." What an incredible line.
It’s not
@@BattlinJack535 I got goosebumps. To each their own bud.
@@loverofhumanity each. To each their own. But you're not wrong.
@@yoshijb9428 thank you for the fix. Wrote that on my cell phone quickly 😅
@@loverofhumanity still love this movie. Lol
Paul Giamatti is just too good in this movie. every delivery of a line, every facial expression and tone of voice is fucking spot on. absolutely amazing
James Rick he should’ve taken that Oscar!
And then there was Amazing Spider-Man 2
1:14 pop up Giamatti is absolutely hilarious
Although a side role in the hangover part 2 Kingsley was a good character too
Paul is in almost every movie I've seen even Downton-abbey- nice surprise .with my favorite actress one of them Shirley McLain. I was surprised he wasn't in Titanic.. lol
I like this movie, the only thing I don't like is how they portrayed Max Baer, he was actually considered to be a real nice and gentle guy. He was vicious in the ring but he never meant to kill anyone, he had nightmares and cried constantly about killing someone unintentionally and he also donated profits from his fights to take care of his family so that his kids could go to college.
Yeah. his family was angry about his portrayal. They didn't need to demonize him to make a "bad guy", James Braddock's story was good on it's own.
Jonathan Gonzales Its funny...because i never considered Baer a bad guy when i watched this movie. I've always thought hew was portrayed as a cocky fighter, but not a bad guy. All champions have a certain cockiness and swag....i mean they're the best in their sport and they know it. His character was just the champ to me. and to me, the ending speaks volumes about his character when he shakes the new champs hand smiling while congratulating him on his victory.
I think showing him going around with hookers in the movie was part of the criticism too.
someone had to a villain in the movie
@TheGoldcountry *I think showing him going around with hookers in the movie was part of the criticism too*. Ain't nothing wrong with hanging with hookers. It's really quite enjoyable..
“This isn’t boxing, folks!
This is a walloping ballet!”
Love that call. Gives me goosebumps.
Me too!
I thought it was
"This is a boxing waltz. This is a boxing ballet"
Russell Crowe is a truly amazing actor. I can't believe he's the same man who played John Nash in A Beautiful Mind.
He was also very convincing in his role as the Spaniard in Gladiator.
Russel's a method actor.
Russell is a superb actor in everything he does. Gladiator is my favorite movie. And thank you for reminding me that I never finished A Beautiful Mind lol
He also played Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde in a film about a female mummy and did an excellent job..
Nor the guy from The Insider. A chameleon in his early days.
Arguably one of the most underrated movies produced. Great story, great action and great acting!
The announcer was fantastic.
Dennis Nelson couldn't have been better
Dennis Nelson the presentation of the movie and accuracy to the era was spot on!
All they had was radio. So he had to be extra dramatic about it.
He was. That’s actually Ron Howard, the director, dad.
@@trayhawk50 He's talking about the radio ringside commentator. That wasnt Howard's Dad. Ron Howard's dad is the one that announces the decision in the center of the ring.
Good movie, but a real shame they didn’t portray Max Baers true character. Maybe one day they’ll make a movie about Max.
An accurate portrayal would have reduced the drama.
Syed Ali Max Baer from what I heard was like Apollo Creed in Rocky, he wasn’t a bad guy, just another boxer, and while he killed someone in the ring, it haunted him for the rest of his life
@@radrook4481 this is Amadeus all over again
@@TheGourdKing Yeah agree, you have to look at the whole movie through the perspective of the protagonist... it's not a documentary. Also the real Max Baer may have been nice.. but he could be pretty dirty in the ring, if you watch some of the actual footage..
Yea, I mean at the end of the day it's a movie and they needed an antagonist but I can understand why Baer's family wasn't happy about the portrayal.
It's strange. This is one of the best movies to come out of Hollywood in the last 20 years, yet it's talked about so little.
ONG
I've seen this movie like 30 times and that body punch mixed with the sound Braddock makes throwing it NEVER gets old
The fight is not over until the final bell rings. Until the bell rings, you give the opponent everything you got
Watching the actual fight on RUclips is eerily similar. The fighting style of Max with that vicious wild right & the swagger around the ring. Unbelievable acting
John Braddock after his success in boxing then fought with the 27th Infantry Division NY Army National Guard during World War II, John served in the Battle Of Saipan which happened during the same time as the Normandy landings and was a bloody and notorious battle with heavy US casualties.
I love fighting movies but this one is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen definitely one of my favs
Never saw this movie but I understand they made Max Baer out to be a sinister character. In fact, he was one of the most gentlemanly fellows to ever grace the ring. Boxing is a hard sport but Max was an honorable man. Goddamn filmmakers...sons of bitches.
Kedbuka But he was also a dirty fighter at times, especially in this fight.
Kedbuka you gotta have a good villain, though :/
He was a vicious fighter mike tyson even references him.
i love 2:09-2:14 that non stop battering of each other's bodies. Amazing sound effects.
What an incredible movie. Doesn’t get the praise it deserves. The acting, the story, the cinematography…everything was perfect. In my top ten of all time.
Queres ver algo donde LA REALIDAD SUPERA LA FICCIÓN? 18/12/2022 ARGENTINA VS FRANCIA FINAL DE LA COPA DEL MUNDO!!! "CINDERELLA MAN"? LAS PELOTAS! ESO ES "CINDERELLA MAN" EN LA REALIDAD!!! SOMOS NOSOTROS Y POR ES,O SIEMPRE NOS VAMOS A LEVANTAR. ABRAZOS AL CIELO A JAMES BRADOCK, MAX BAER Y MIGUEL ANGEL FIRPO (SI SABÉS DE BOX AVERIGUARÁS POR QUE JACK DEPMSEY SIEMPRE LO RECORDÓ)
1:12 onward reminds me of my granddad. He was a boxer and an incredible man, he died the year this movie came out and my mum told me about him and I saw this scene and it made me think of him. If I could see him box I would cry.
I'm sure your granddad was real good and I'm sorry to hear there's no footage of him fighting
Paul Giamatti was perfect in this movie
One of those scenes that make you realize you were "tightened up" watching it. I didn't realize until the end that my fists were clenched.
TheGoldcountry seriously I was dodging punches
A real super hero, rest in peace Jim, you did it, you shocked the world
Never tire of watching this - one of my all time favorites. Russell Crowe deserved much more praise for his incredible portrayal of Jimmy the Bulldog.,.
1:11 when I first saw the movie and first saw this scene and the flashback I was like "omg is this the end of Braddock!?" (cuz I didn't know much about James Braddock at the time.) when he dodged that punch that could've instantly killed him on the spot, I was then like "OMG YES!" And I sprang right out of my chair in history class and got so embarrassed. such a great and emotional movie.
+Aaron Sametz (MadnessMC), let me tell you my experience: I was also like you, only that I watched it at a movie theater, that part I was like "damn it... please no..no...no..." and when he dodges it, i was like "hell yeah!!!!".. keep attacking!!! ... cannot imagine my reaction when he won the WHC... It was as if I was watching a live PPV xD!!!
Bro you guys were also watching it in history class about the depression era, me too me and my friend almost had a heart attack from the fighting scene
Mr Score especially with the flashbacks, once I saw them it was very hard to tell if he was going to survive. he learned this technique from the video he watched back in the middle of the movie. one of the most historical and emotional parts out of the entire movie.
Double Aaron we just finished watching it in history class today
Just think you are right on that part.
Just watched this for the first time last night, I was rooting for James( Russell) as if I were watching real fights, I was in tears of joy at the end, can't recall the last time a movie touched me that much.Hits you right to the core, you feel the emotions, great picture all around
Such a underrated movie should've been nominated for best picture and Russell Crowe should've been nominated for best actor and Paul Giamati for best supporting actor
The lady playing his wife was also very good.
Paul was nominated for the best supporting actor.
Moreover, I feel that Rene Zellwegger should at least have been nominated for the best actress.
Once again, the french horns making a scene that much better than it should be. I wish I had French horns following me around 24/7. Such a beautiful instrument. This was the first full soundtrack I fell in love with (outside of Tarzan lol)
2:09 is my favorite scene, the shot from underneath to show all the action looks incredible, both men going to toe no step backwards just brawling it out absolutely incredible
This is when boxing was a long night with 15 rounds. Jim Braddock was indeed a major underdog against the young champion!
Makin' music, makin' movies, n' fightin' round the world! ... Russell Crowe
This was such a good movie
I remember we had this on DVD when I was a kid, I was 14 when I first saw it and it's one of my all time favourite movies. I watched that DVD many many times. Amazing movie.
I could watch this film over and over, Courage! James J. Braddock had that and then some.
Love this movie. I cry every time.
One of the greatest movies of all time for many reasons
Baer may have killed a man but he was nothing like the way he was portrayed in this film. He's a hero in my book the way he helped Frankie Cambells family after his death in the ring.
R.I.P. Baer and Braddock.
When max went for the kill punch my hart stopped for a second
He looked like some kind of maniacal butcher!
This movie made me cry because he was fighting for his family
Same, was in by this point
the soundtrack that kicks in towards the end of the fight combined with the actual scene brings a smile to my face no matter what such an amazing movie with amazing actors so great all around
We watched this in social studies class and the whole class were on the edge of their seats when Braddock got punched hard and we started clapping when Braddock dodges his death punch and when he won, we were all happy
Wow i never know that you got a class Arthur 🤣🤣
de lo mejor que vi....Me encantó en el 2005 ahora que tengo hijos y la vuelvo a ver ...Me emocioné al mil...es una maravilla de película y gran mensaje. ...y un gran campeón
"He's moving forward*
- LOVE THAT LI
I think the reason they made Max such a bad person on this movie was because they made the movie from Jimmys perspective
Ron Howard said that the script was written in the pov of the braddock family
@@darklordfilms129 Ron Howard was also the actor who played Richie Cunningham in Happy Days.
It doesn't make sense.. they were friends in real life.. like rocky and apollo
i saw this with my dad he told me the story from his wisdom i loved it .ive seen so many times my son now who is a boxer 19years old from omah in ireland loves and has inspired him great film and story !
That is why he fought so well in Man of Steel and beat General Zod so easily.
just watched this in my 9th grade history class for great depression what a great movie
best part of the whole god damn movie
Best film of all time
Amazing, so amazing and so inspirational! James Braddock was a true American Hero, this true champion, and this indomitable, entirely undeterred and larger than life Irish warrior! Love it! For what a scene, what a movie, and what a man, fighting and battling his way to the top against all odds, that almost perennial underdog, and walking away the victor after a bruising, bitter and brutal battle, this battle for the ages. Amazing! Irish warrior!
Es increible como un hombre puede salir del lodo ,tomar valor y coraje y recomenzar .
Man they really know how to get your heart pumping
Maxx Baer, a beast but a showman first and a boxer second, he himself even alluded to this. It was very easy to write him as a villain for this story, at least they showed him giving respect in the end.
Watching this in school and my teacher cut the movie off as soon as the fight started
All watched this movie and loved it must watch Warrior too. Great movies love these stories
Remember him having them replay the film... that was so smart cuz he said in his mind I can figure him out...
And the flashback made his mind click on what to do at the very end.
Hey I got the two DVD set and has the deleted scenes. Soo Good & A True Story: Must Watch!
One of the greatest comeback from nothing movies I've ever watched!
Raging Bull gets all the accolades, Rocky is more well known, but Cinderella Man for me is the best boxing movie hands down.
Hell yeah dude, this movie is what got me into boxing in the first place. So underrated.
Add the movie the bleeder
And South paw both awesome movies as well
Thanks for posting this! This scene truly moves me as well! God bless and keep you guys always!
Godoy vs louis
Yeah but the results missing, the teal tear jerker moment
I cant describe just how much i love this movie.
Ring announcer should've gotten an Academy Award nomination. He has incredible dialogue without and he makes the movie.
One of the all time great movies.
One of the manliest pugilistic films I have ever seen. Regardless of the depiction of Bear. The fight defined a nation at the time. Bear went on to glory in his career and Braddock in his with his loss to Lewis. Yet this is masterful storytelling. I thank you for posting .
Great boxing movie, my favorite. Russell Crowe was great in this. All the actors were great.
One of my favorite movies!
Watched this in history class when learning about the great depression,it had the whole class chanting "let's go Jimmy!"
Ron Howard is a great Director, Giamatti an Crowe are great. Weeped a bit, The Lansky Scene with Jimmy Braddock Thinking of Feeding His Kids.
agreed one of my all-time favorites
Absolutely love this movie. there is a lot of good values and lessons to be learned. this is also a great movie for just entertainment you definitely don't see fights like this anymore.
Yes you do. Tyson Fury’s story is every bit as compelling. A man was world champion, retired and became severely depressed, wanted to kill himself. He recovered from his mental illness and recaptured the world title. Incredible story that’ll be a movie one day
just watched this movie,amazing
Max Baer needs a movie on himself...he was a character and a half
I remember jumping up in the theater when Braddock landed that uppercut. I definitely wasn’t the only person crying in there either.
This movie gave me the heart to beat a lot of the things
it is a good movie based on the true story and a lot of lessons to learn specially how u can see about the great depression AMAZING!!!
we just did too this week. It was an amazing movie! My whole class was on the edge of our seats during this scene
Best boxing movie i ever saw!
Favorite movie of all time Top 3...
Excellent story. Excellent movie
It was a great movie but as something of an amateur boxing historian I have to point out that the real fight was nothing like the one in the movie and by all accounts Max Baer Sr. (father of Jethro Bodine) was nothing like that jerk in the movie. He liked to clown and have a good time but he was really a nice, funny guy. He also later reportedly suffered depression over having killed someone in the ring.
But I understand a good movie needs a good villain and Max probably wouldn't have minded.
2:10 is an incredible moment hearing both fighters go blow for blow.
The weird thing was he felt so bad for killing the man he ended up giving his winnings to the family of the fighter
I always cry this movie ugh
i watched this movie a few days ago for tha first time nd i loved it !! : )
Me too. A lot of heart
My grandparents grew up poor during the depression, then my grandfathers fought in WWII, and they became financially stable middle class families by the time my parents were born. But the fact they'd endured the hardships of the depression showed in so many ways. They were incredibly frugal, insanely hard working, wasted nothing. As kids, we were allowed to take whatever we liked at dinner, but had to finish our plates. My grandmother never ate rice or beans for the rest of her life because that was all they had to eat when she was growing up. My grandfather didn't trust the stock market so CD's were all he'd invest in. They had amazing gardens that provided so many delicious vegetables and the grandmothers were the best cooks I've ever known. They were tough people who never whined, because they understood our middle class life was paradise.
This movie literally destroyed me, I admire how he always gets up.
I love good boxing movies! Not enough made lately.
I have seen good movies based on true stories but the story of Jim Braddock is probably one of the best.
Fun fact: Max Baer's son (Max Baer, Jr.) played Jethro in the Beverly Hillbillies.
Braddock was not knocked down in the actual fight, though it plays well for the movie I reckon
It was absolutely despicable how they portrayed Max Baer in this movie.
someone had to be the villain of the movie its like Dan Devine in the movie Rudy.. I mean you cant have people rooting for Max Baer in the final fight. The movie was about Jim Braddock
@@quarf53206 Yeah so just completely tarnish the man's legacy then eh?
Idiot.
@@ReservoirPunk Dan Devine in "Rudy". The other teams and the people who govern the sport of Bobsledding in "Cool Runnings" Pancho Martin
in "Secretariat" Art Howe in "Moneyball". if you know the actual backgrounds of those people and how they are portrayed in those movies you know that they werent portrayed accurately. Again even movies based on true stories need a villain and Max Baer being the world champion that braddock beats to win the title had to be the villain.
@@quarf53206 What a crock. Max being the heavyweight champion was enough to be a pseudo-villain, they didn't need to make Max out to be this sadistic bully who thrives on murdering his opponents in the ring.
Look at Rocky for example, a movie with a similar tone. Did Apollo Creed ever come across as a complete piece of human garbage? No. He was cocky, brash and arrogant, but he wasn't a monster, yet he worked great as the "villain".
There is no excuse for what they did to Max Baer's legacy. I understand a movie needs a villain, but they went WAY too far with it.
You can easily say "ah well it's only a movie" but there's countless movie goers out there that have no idea who Max Baer is and when they saw that movie they left with this idea that Max Baer was a horrible monster.
Max cried himself to sleep several times after what he did to Frankie Campbell and even considered retirement. On top of that, Max only had nice and highly complimentary things to say about Braddock before and after the fight.
Like I said, there is absolutely no excuse for how far they went with the character assassination of Max Baer. Absolutely disgraceful.
fantastic movie
I want to praise David Huband, the actor who played the radio broadcaster. Huband is a very recognizable face from Canadian TV, even though his name may not be. In the time wherein this story takes place, there was no television to allow the public to see for themselves what was going on during the match. So, if you weren't at the arena, you literally depended on the radio guy to tell you how the fight was progressing
Awesome scene in an awesome movie.
I’m watching this in my US History class as part on the Great Depression and it’s very exciting
Jared Saucedo bruh me too
same, lmao
A man who has nothing to lose will never ever beat a man with everything to lose never 💯
Are you sure ?
@lexkanyima2195 I'm positive sir all you have to do is really think about it
@lexkanyima2195 now I'm not saying he wouldn't win but 6 out of 10 fight the man with the most to Lose to and all he fights for would win its all about who wants it more at the end of the day
Best fight scene ever filmed and the most realistic. Should've been nominated, even won, for Best Picture. And Russell Crowe for Best Actor. Ron Howard took a couple of small liberties with the script and that probably cost them. But a phenomenal movie all around. I walked out of the movie theater STUNNED at what I just witnessed, and the Braddock story. Tough times then, and a tremendous movie about it.
best boxing cinema history
ciclostaticful not the best but is one of the best boxing films out there up there with Rocky, Raging Bull etc
I couldn't have said it any better. Bravo.
Me too man! Definition of a real man right here in this movie.
