    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe) is named the new Heavyweight World Champion, defeating the reigning champ Max Baer (Craig Bierko).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    The true story of an athlete who achieved his greatest success against the most daunting odds of his life is brought to the screen in this historical drama. In the 1920s, James Braddock (Russell Crowe) from Bergen, NJ, was a promising contender in professional boxing; he had strength, spirit, and tenacity, but the combination of a serious hand injury and a 1929 defeat in a bout with light heavyweight champ Tommy Loughran sent his career into a serious tailspin. As Braddock's career in the ring dried up, the Great Depression put a stake through the heart of America's economy, and Braddock found himself working at the New York docks for pitiful wages as he tried to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and three children. Desperate for money, Braddock turned to his former trainer and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), who was unexpectedly able to scare up a bout for him, battling John Griffin at Madison Square Garden. While conventional wisdom had it that Braddock was too old, out of shape, and out of practice to have any chance of winning, he defeated Griffin, and continued beating his opponents with a powerful left hook that had been intensified by years of punishing dock work. In a nation desperate for good news, Braddock's surprising comeback became a tonic to struggling workers and unemployed people, and all eyes were on Braddock when in 1935 he took on powerful heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) in what was both literally and figuratively the fight of his life.

    A great movie, very well done I enjoyed it. My only problem with the movie was the portrayal of Baer. Max was far from the glitz and glam arrogant person they made him out to be. He did kill a man in the ring and he stayed in that man's hospital room with him, he sobbed when he died and nearly retired from fighting as a result. Max was a good guy and a good fighter he got a bad rap in this film because hollywood needs a bad guy, it's just a shame.

    • @skepticalbaby6912

      +Corby Oliver It really is a shame. Ron Howard is a really good filmmaker. I don't understand why he insists on turning fascinating true stories into Hollywood trash, like A Beautiful Mind and this.

    • @sethronalds9457
      @sethronalds9457 8 лет назад +71

      +Corby Oliver even in his retirement, his kids would find Max sobbing over the death years later. Hollywood needs villains which are not redeemable, it helps the audience get behind the hero that much more. I totally get what your saying though. Baer in real life was not at all the monster the film would suggest

    One of the greatest films about boxing; the bulldog of Bergen, the 'Cinderella' Man, the champion who came back from oblivion, insignificance and infamy, into which he had fallen during the Great Depression; what a tremendous, heartbreaking story about willpower, courage and devotion to a greater cause! He fought for his loved ones, he fought for the simple people of New Jersey, plagued by the aftermath of the huge financial and social crisis, he fought for himself, for all the days he worked at the docks, starved to exhaustion and forgotten by everybody, and he triumphed.

And I made my own little Cinderella comeback story and I came back swinging. Working three freakin jobs getting a second education and taking care of my family all so that I can open my own business and get out of poverty. A mission accomplished but by all means it was the equivalent of putting myself through the ringer so that I can give myself a second chance. I think that's why I love this story so my much. I don´t like what Hollywood did with this fight. It was surely one hell of a fight but there are two things that NEVER happened: 1) Braddock never looked like he was in trouble and 2) Baer never behaved like an asshole. He was a good sport at all times. It is an awesome fight to watch, specially in the later rounds when Baer was getting desperate, but they both behaved like gentlemen all the way.

    • @danielkimble1972

      I just watched the original fight, and yes, Baer did alot of taunting and asshole like things.

    • @josepablobolanos
      @josepablobolanos 10 лет назад +1

      cimplycellular You mean the bit of clowning around by Baer, trying to erode Braddock´s confidence? If that is "asshole like" behavior to you, then I can´t imagine what you must think of Muhammad Ali. In the movie, they didn´t even show that Baer sincerely hugged Braddock after the fight and how he showed absolutely no animosity towards him when it was all over.
      They went far to try to make him look like a jerk and a brute, for the sake of dramatism, but when I researched him I found no evidence that he was anything other than an outgoing and self-confident fighter. His family passionately holds that Baer always regreted the fact that those other two fighters died from their boxing injuries.

      you're right, but this isn't a documentary it's a movie...baer's family is upset with this movie, claiming he was not the way he was portrayed here, he was a very nice guy...but as part of the dramatic sweep of the picture and to build more interest, they had to build him up as some sort of bad guy...

    • @danielkimble7212
      @danielkimble7212 10 лет назад

      José Pablo Bolaños Rigioni Ali was a jerk in the ring, yes, I do think that. Showboating is one thing, disrespect is another. I can understand when a fighter gets frustrated and does not act himself for a moment. Ali, Tyson, Baer, all bad demeanor. Baer was not an ass all the time, I know, but this is supposed to be a gentleman's sport ( or used to be)

    • @superlucas010578
      @superlucas010578 10 лет назад +3

      José Pablo Bolaños Rigioni For the teatricality of the movie they had to put someone as a "bad guy" and that man had to be Max Baer. I don't agree at all but that's Hollywood !

    2:44 While the movie did definitely vilify Max Bae a lot more, at least they kept the part of history where Max congratulated James and was understanding and enthusiastic about his win.

    As uplifting as this film is it doesn't do max baer justice. I've read a lot about him and he liked to mess around both in and out of the ring but by most accounts had a heart of gold. The end scene shows baer shake Braddocks hand but that should've been shown more prominently because that was the real Max Baer. He was humble in both victory and defeat throughout his career
