- In this video, we are going to demonstrate how to mask your CNC projects before you carve them on your CNC router. I use Oramask 813 masking for CNC router projects. It is brand name and works well.
In this video, we will cover how to prepare your material before applying the masking an the important steps to follow as you apply it.
I recommend getting the 150 foot roll since it is used up quite quickly when you get shorter rolls.
Get your Oramask by clicking the link below.

I've been using Oramask for years now...I would suggest a few tips...1) seal the wood first with shellac, 2) once mask is applied I roll it with an ink roller (obviously without ink) to get more uniform adhesion, and 3) after carving, prior to painting seal the carved areas with shellac...no bleed of paint into surrounding wood...
RicardBaynes, that is all great tips brother! Thank you so much for sharing.
You're the best Garrett!! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain how this works.
GuyMacMillan, You're welcome! I'm glad you found the explanation helpful.
That was perfect. When you held up Elizabeth and said John, you were talking to me and my wife!
John, haha glad to hear it brother.
Garrett, thanks so much for all you teach!
You are the sole reason I got into CNC woodcarving!
Your Wednesday evening live is a great way for all the rest of us to learn.
This live feed on the Oramask, is another feather in your cap of teaching tools!
The surprise visit to your shop , shows how much fun and support your staff offer!
Thanks again Buddy!
FrankKerry, thanks brother! So glad to hear this one helped you.
Thanks for the demo Garrett. Merry Christmas.
I’ve been working on several Christmas things with my CNC. Bread & Cracker trays, family signs, and charcuterie boards. Oh, and coasters made from trimmings on the charcuterie boards.
Love your stuff. I learn a lot from you.
Steve
Steve, so happy to help brother! Happy CNCing.

🌵 Looks like business is booming 🎉🌵
WilliamCovell, thanks brother. Im happy to help!
Loved it, do more of it !!
w4fej, will do brother! So glad you enjoyed this one.
When masking a long board if you use painters' tape and tape it down in the center and a couple of spots on one half to hold the masking in place. Then fold the other half over lightly cut the backing paper then peel it back a couple of inches and proceed just as you did in the video. that way one person can easily put down a long piece of masking by him/her self.
ttnorth, that is a great idea brother! I like that.
Thanks great video. I'm gonna try a desk name plate for ky daughter in law's desk, she is a spanish/english teacher in the 5th grade. Gonna kake it a triangle with a blank side, english side and spanish side. She can then flip it to either english side or spanish side.
Charlieearle, right on brother! I am excited to see the final result.
I can literally hear your heart pumping. LOL!
TechBuild, its a detailed process brother!
Great Job
Thanks brother! Glad to hear you liked this one.
Good evening! Could you share what kind of mic you are using? They sounds great.
Hi Dan. Yes, Iam using Rode woreless. Here it is from Amazon

Great video Garrett, but shouldn't you have sealed the board first? I enjoy your explanations!
I certainly could have, may have been a better idea! Nice catch!
@@IDCWoodcraft I know you were under the gun, with the going live. Maybe make a script note - anytime you are carving and coloring, seal and THEN Oramask. Still, enjoyable!
Brings up another question tho - learning moment...... OK, I forgot to seal and Oramasked. Can I strip off the mask, seal, and reuse the mask?
I use to use Oramask until I watched a video by Rob Shuster @Sidewinder Drums using water based wood filler. Simply Stain and Seal with shellac or lacquer. After that dries put on small amount of the wood putty and mix with water to make a sloppy paste and spread a light coat over what your going to carve. After carving paint or stain what you want. Sand off the wood filler and finish as yo want, no worries about masking lifting up i
Roland, right on! That sounds like a great method thanks for sharing. I'll have to give it a shot!
Can painters tape still be used for masking before cutting? When I get started making my first sign I will try it.😊
Iggyshere, I wouldn't recommend it my friend! I would recommend using something like Oramask instead!
Orafol is the company that makes Oramask 813, as well as the Oracal range of vinyls - 831, 851, etc..
theOPkilla, good point brother.
Do you seal the carving prior to paint?
Absolutely or youll end up with paint bleeding into the wood grain. .
I like to sand, then seal, mask, cut, then reseal the letters, dry then paint. Ive had best results with that method, especially with wood like oak.
TimKarsch, you sure can brother! Try Shellac.
If you could upload in 1080 definition it would be much easier on the eyes. Just a suggestion.
emoastorm7, thanks for the suggestion my friend. I'll look into this!
Craftsman is still available but its made in China now. CRAFTSMAN 120-Volt 2-Amp Corded Sheet Sander with Dust Management $49.00
Talegunner4414, thanks for letting me know brother!
Do you get any buildup on the CNC bits as you carve?
And if so, do you pause occasionally to clean off the bit, then continue?
Frankerry, sometimes I do, a good trick is to clean them in Simple Green every few months.
get the sander at Ace Hardware
ChipsSmith, great call brother! I like that.
FYI
Craftsman still around. They were acquired by Lowe’s.
eb14cc, thanks brother that's good to know!
Garrett SUPRIZE!! 😄
Ozguzzi, they got me good brother!
I can hear you great
GlenBox, so glad to hear that brother!
Yes😊
RickDesantis, right on brother! Im glad to hear it.
Does anybody do a quick edge seal after the Oramask has been carved maybe with some shellac etc.????
dptp9lf, Yes, applying a quick edge seal after carving Oramask can help prevent bleeding when painting. Shellac can be a good option, as it dries quickly and provides a seal on the edges of the carved area. Just make sure to apply it carefully to avoid smudging your design.
Have you ever used a 'J' Roller to flatten the mask?
MichaelBurner, not yet but that is a great idea brother!
Hello everyone.
Jack, happy to have you here brother!
Oooooo, please stop the corny self indulgence.
???
Yep! Sound is good
Kate, glad to hear it.
So Jack have you checked in for tonight yet?
Kate, haha good one my friend.
Hey ladies!!!
Kate, happy to have you here my friend.
