Honda EU2000i Generator Bad Idle Repair

- My Honda EU2000i generator had started surging at idle. I decided to tear it apart to see what I could find. I was finally able to fix it but I'm not too sure what I actually accomplished to make it work properly again. I will show you where to look and what to look for if you are having similar idle issues with your generator.

*Fantastic little **Generater.Systems** ! I have a slide in camper on my truck and this ran for at least 14 hours on less than a gallon of fuel mainly running lights and water pump. With the small load it had no problem running in eco mode and was so quiet we had to listen close just to see if it was running.*
I love it when you guys say get gas with no ethanol when you travel that’s when I need it so I’m going to drive around look for 100% gasoline
Aaron. The pilot / low speed jet you took out is usually the problem with Honda's and the clones. Sometimes, they need to be cleaned. cut a wire from a wire brush to do that. It fits perfectly. Once in, you will be able to see the wire through the cross drilled hole. That is as far as it goes. Also, at times, as the engine gets a lot more hours on it, you may have to use a "wire size" drill bit and pin vise to open the jet one size to stop the surging you experienced. A very common problem with this carb design.

That helped me, big thanks! Runs perfect again!
worked for me all the way in Bermuda ,, thank you Aaron
Top O-ring was missing, that will make it run rough. There should be an o-ring on the top and bottom of the Pilot Jet you pulled out.
Thanks for this video, worked on my generator. Here is a cyber beer and a like for your time. 👍🍺
Great video
Higher octane does not mean it has less ethanol or will better resist gumming up the carb. Check out pure-gas map and find a station selling 0% ethanol gas. But the best thing is to run it dry or drain the carb before storing. Always more effective than using stabil. I also suggest a better flashlight.
He should not be using 93 octane gas in those generators.
He didn't show the harder part, which is how to shove the rubber tube from the air filter back into the engine. I bent the tube into a U shape and use small tie wrap to hold in place. Shove it back inside and cut the tie wrap. This video contains good info.
Just WD40 it next time…gotta wet the hole before inserting like all things in life
@@Maxumized You have to be more careful with WD40 on some hoses since it can deteriorate it. Not everything is compatible. The problem wasn't that its hard to insert, but it was hard to reach since its in a tight area.
It was dirty. You blew it clean. That’s all these need if taken care of with proper fuel and stabilizer. Moisture and dryness cycle of the garage or storage will get to these gens if not used frequently.
Thanks for video. To keep this from happening, run aviation fuel 87 octane or higher. It has no ethanol and the aviation gas has a 2+ year shelf life. Stabil is not a panacea. Second, always run genset dry if not planning to use for several months....you will save much time and effort.
There is a tiny hole that runs up through it to the bigger hole that goes across it I used a piece of a wire brush to poke the hole it’s tiny but anyway looks like u got it
My jet didn't seem to have a hole in it, but it was completely blocked. I didn't have anything that thin to insert so I used the smallest drill bit I had to make a hole. Some plastic actually came off so I'm wondering if the hole is too big now. It did sort of fix the surging, but it still does it just not as bad. Might have to play with the idle screw some more.
Nice thing about Hondas is that you can order any part. A new jet is $7.
best vid on this issue
You didn't show how to clean the pilot jet..? Need a very small wire with the help of a w40 pressure ..from 5 star i will give you 2 only..lol..!
My does the same, I solved the problem by not completely putting the idle lever all the way to the idle position.
Run it with the choke closed and it runs rich, builds up carbon and wastes fuel. Clean your carb jets.
You will overheat that poor little engine buy doing that…it’s running in a lean state when you have to do that. Clean the jet or say goodbye to a nice generator.
.35 mm pilot (idle) jet .. a twist tie wire fits (but be careful .. get the twist tie wire “real” straight)

Octane rating has no relation to whether your gasoline has ethanol in it or not. In fact, ethanol actually provides a pretty good boost to the octane rating calculation! It used to be that gas pumps had to inform you how much ethanol was in the gas, but thanks to the efforts of our environmentalists (and the ethanol lobby) they no longer have to as long as it is not greater than 15%. HOWEVER, there are gas stations (my local Marathon is one) which have a single pump of 91 octane "ethanol free" gasoline. It costs about $1.00 more a gallon, but I won't run my small engines on anything else.
I did all this put a new carb on still doing the same thing what should I do
@@julianrivas2529 do not use 93 octane gas in those generators.
Bingo! Took all of 20 minutes to fix.
I have 4 of these Honda EU2000i. I had problems with the gas that I was using, buy gas with no ethanol. Honda's design will not allow you to run generator dry. The on and off switch does two things. One it's your shut off switch electrically and two it turns gas flow off to carb. How can you run it dry if the engine dies from turning the electrical switch off? There is a fix for that. They make a kill switch that by passes the original kill switch, by doing that you are able to turn the gas off and let the generator run out of gas. The added kill switch is there in case you need to shut down the generator in a hurry. I removed that black plastic jet also and the hole must be very small. All I did was spray carb cleaner in the end and blow it out with an air hose. Use some type of lube on small o-ring and just press it back in. My generator runs great now. I did clean all my jets and carb bowl and filled gas tank with 100% gas no ethanol.
what are you saying Honda won't let you run generator dry? I always run my Honda generators dry as running out of gas before storing them away. I never have any problems with them running them dry of gas.
Better than running them dry is to simply place the gen on concrete like the edge of your driveway and unscrew the bowl drain and empty the carb. Make sure switch is off or you’ll learn something new. Next use, turn switch on and unscrew bowl screw just enough until fuel bleeds out tube and tighten up…starting will only take 1-2 pulls.
Good vid but too bad you dont show closeup of how jet sits 😔
It only fits one way…either flat side facing out
Thank you. Much appreciated 👍
Can't see a darn thing.
Well ? What happend. You never told us if the screw was stopped up or. If you had to use a wire. To clear it out , great first part of the video. Horrible 2nd part 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Lol. Yeah that was a mess. It was just the idle vent on the top of the carb. Cleaned it out and it worked.
The jet was stopped up. The simple blowing action or better yet wire clean the jet is what fixed the problem.
Do not use 93 octane gas in those generators. Read your manual. Running 93 octane is not good for them!
Having a baseball cap on doesn’t help when you’re trying to see what’s going on!
