When Kharn dueled Abaddon in the novel The Red Path, he literally hit Drach’nyen so hard with Gorechild that he caused the swirling faces on the blade grimace in pain…
It's freaking Kharn though and his Chainaxe is heavily mutated

Gorechild is a weapon with 1 000 000 kill count and was a personal weapon of a Primarch once. It may have started as a chainaxe, but by now it's more powerful than most daemon weapons.
Imagine being so powerful that you're a legitimate threat to the emperor of man kind, only to become a sword wield by a useless plot armor abusing loser who needed 13 trys to get past the first planet of your home base. Looks like demons can experience fates worse than death too.
I feel like Abaddon gets a bad rap for no reason. There's a reason why Abbadon failed 12 times. Its because there needs to be a continuity for Cadia for like 20-30 irl years and at large the Imperium of Man for Games Workshop.
He's meant to work this way because of writing and GWs sales. No one wanted to write Cadia off until very recently.
This also has to do with what fans generally play as: The Imperium.
Because 1) Everyone wants to to play the race they relate to the most and 2) Chaos is a bitch to paint.

@@peterbarca8783 Someone brought up recently that GW still pretty at fault for why Abaddons such an impatient threat. Because in fantasy, a new chaos champion would appear to lead the chaos incursions. They could of easily had different prevalent characters within the chaos faction to lead the different black crusades instead of only Abaddon. Plus, they could of at least had him do more in different parts of the imperium at least.
@@AliveRumble082 I actually agree with that. Maybe make an Iron Warrior or a member of the Alpha Legion WhosiDefinelyNotAlpharius in charge of Chaos Undivided for a while. Or Lorgar in the final 13th Crusade.
I also like the idea that Ra chose Abaddon. Maybe even a moment of understanding between Ra and Abaddon? Ra and Abaddon were fighting but Abaddon was on the worse end of the fight - but as you said Ra realised that Abaddon was the best possible protector of Drach'nyens power because he'll never truly use it. Like Abaddon would burn entire planets and solar systems and not blink an eye, but unleashing Drach'nyen would be going too far in the war AND he'd lose whatever control he had over Chaos. The Champion of Chaos still having a slight bit of human there too simply because he views Chaos as a weapon, not as a truth would make him more than a "I'll get you next time you melding Space Marines you" villian.
i can already imagine Ra's thoughts: "hmmmm which of the traitors is power hungry enough to come for the sword but is also absolutely useless??" and then he just sees abby the armless walking up to him "my duty has ended lol, there probably isnt a more useless spacemarine in the galaxy"

i mean kinda kills the point of being the leader of chaos if you let someone else take the glory of killing the imperium the fact that that someone also doubles as an op sword just gives you less incentive to let them be anything other than a weapon

I mean unleashing drach'nyen would absolutely destroy 1 planet but then abaddon would lose his sword and most of his legion as drach'nyen slaughters them all.

@@kurokaze511 Abaddon was created by Alpharius (or Omegon) as a way to hinder the Chaos forces, and they gave him that sword to ensure that he would have plot armor and wouldn't be destroyed.

Maybe Omegon saw what was coming and assassinated Abbadon during the Heresy and then tricked Fabius Bile into cloning him and now that clone is leading the forces of Chaos. Because the best part would be that Bile knows about this the whole time but he can't say anything because the Chaos armies would collapse on themselves, get mopped up by the Imperium with no leadership and then Bile would be hunted down in short order. So Abbadon would be his greatest success and also his biggest failure and no one can ever know.

What if Drach'nyen was able to slowly possess and take over Abaddon, eventually killing Abaddon (yay!), and letting loose Drach'nyen in the physical realm as the antithesis to the emperor, actually giving chaos someone worthy to lead them?
Biblically, Abbadon is a demon. What if he and Drach'nyen fuse into Horus 2: Electric Boogaloo
One year later and this is still a fantastic idea for shithead Abaddurrrr
One thing to note the emperor was already showing signs of exhaustion after 5 years of powering the golden throne while try to close the break in the psykic seal so he didn't go in at full strength.
physically he was tired however the book did mention he was PYSCICALLY more powerfull then ever after using the throne and getting off it even after such a relativily short time.
its untelling just how powerfull the imperor would be by now if the throne ever gets unplugged enough pyschic power and he should be able to reform his flesh just as soon as the thorne fully powers down.

I think he let drach’nyen stab him so that he would let his guard down, drach’nyen has shown an incredible ability to escape sticky situations and the emperor knew this so used drach’nyen’s inexperience and bloodlust to goad him into getting close enough to be imprisoned permanently
Don't forget ORKs are nearly incorruptable. A Bloodthirster might show and the Orks there would be like "Oy! look at da big git ova dere. I'g gonna take his big choppa for my own."

Now that I Think about it, Drach'nyen was birthed by this biblical story and how it grew and grew until it became a legit Overpowered Relic and the personal Fleshlight of Abaddon...

According to the Emperor hinself in the book Master of Mankind, he mused that the first murder was far more likely perpetrated by humanities more ape-like ancestors than modern humans.
The book explains that the form the demon takes to resemble a tribal warrior was to ape, rather than accurately represent humanity's concept of what the first murderer would have looked like.

The showdown with the emperor and the demon was legit a dbz/bleach fight with teleporting/stabby nonsense. We need more of it. That fight scene in the book was cool

I’m just picturing that Ra saw Abbadon appear and realized the most useless chaos champion was the greatest candidate for the sword, then just let him take the sword and leave.

I imagine that ra was a mess and barely alive custodes can fall and drach'neyn being that powerful was probably slowly draining him the fact he was to even be alive when abaddon got to him would be a feat much less put of a fight

You might ask why the Emperor waited so long to defend the gate to the webway. It was bc he was sitting on the golden throne which psychically protected the webway from the warp. In order to continue this seal while the Emperor got up to fight in the webway physically, the Sisters of Silence had to round up like 1000 of the strongest psychers to sacrifice. I really like your theory that Rah gave Abaddon Drachnyan because he knew Drachnyan wasn't a threat in the of Abby.
The Emperor has ended more empires than the demon. They got the titles wrong.
Drach'nyen is a daemon, daemons usually form a parasitic relation with some aspect, concept or idea. In the case of empire endings, no matter who caused the downfall, Drach'nyen is the one to claim all the power from the cascading event, much like how Khornate daemons gain power from bloodshed.
Emps did not gain any power from ending or starting an empire, only material wealth.

He's the antitheses of the Emperor. The Emperor needed to end empires to build up his own. An empire builder vs an empire breaker.
Would love if it plays out with Ra having chosen Abadon, but I’m betting it won’t fold out that way and be Abadon killing Ra or some other nonsense.
Ra is a badass but if Abaddon, Iskandor, Lheorvine, Falkus and Telemachon all attacked him at once he wouldn't win. Abaddon the guy who beat the best imperial swordsman, Iskandor a psyker as strong as Ahriman, Telemachon someone who could even occasionally beat Abaddon in a dual ect. That's a lot of power for 1 custodian, even one as bad ass as Ra.
I'm not against Ra using Abaddons pride against him however.

@@DarthAxolotl ya but when Abbadon beat Sigismund he was old and slower and if Abbadon wasn't buffed by Chaos that sword to his chest would have killed him. RA doesn't have the age issue so he would spank Abbadon so if it's not multiple be RA then bad GW writing, but it's ADB writing Abbadon and he hates the loyalists so he will probably write Abbadon beating him 1 vs 1 which would never happen with the feats they have shown at that point.
@@eichler721 at that point in the book Abaddon isn't buffed by the chaos gods yet. He's actually weakened by them to the point that Iskandor is worried about his health he looks so bad from holding off their influence. So if anything he was weaker at that point than when he claimes drach'nyen
I like to think Ra spent those centuries fighting Lorgar, who wanted the sword so he could free Drachnien, and eventually was worn down and knew he couldn't escape forever, but he could hand the sword off to someone who Lorgar couldn't touch and who also wouldn't let the demon loose, so he chose Abbadon
Abbadon was my 1st mini, him and a retinue of terminators, was a gift from a friend and will always be my favorite.

@@mainstream2226 haha, this was back in 1995, lead minis, and original ruleset. He was a badass back then. If you hit with Drach'nyen the opponent dies. (Invulnerable saves are allowed, however failed saves are killed outright regardless of wounds remaining)

It's not mainly that he's more powerful. It's because he's the antitheses of the Emperor. Tailor made to counter him. Like how big E is to the Chaos Gods.
If Drachy'nyen was born of the first murder and in the same chapter the Emperor witnessed the death of his father it is very likely that the Emperor was Abel's son. The shaman singularity plot still applies as it doesn't mean the Emperor needed to be spawned out of nothing, just that he was significant enough that his lineage, and his family history, became engrained in all abrahamic religions.
This also means that Drach'nyen fought Big E in the form of his uncle, a man Big E had killed.

It would indeed be a very Abaddon thing to do where even when he is using his OP plot armor sword to further the cause of Chaos he is also shooting it in the foot.

Maybe the plan was for the sword to fall into a chaos champion's hands eventually, the greatest one even, and the "destroy of empires" would make sure he could not build or maintain an empire to challenge the Imperium.
Imagine if Abaddon ever wins, and builds his own Empire...he's still setting himself up to be clapped xD

Never thought of it that way, but that would mean the Bible *WAS RIGHT* but would also be wrong because the prophecy says that the antichrist will fail and lose to Christ. I'm a Christian, but I have always taken WH40k's lore as any nonbeliever of creationist religions would in the setting, and feel that legitimizing the Bible in setting is problematic, as humanity is far younger than other sentient life forms in setting, also because it doesn't mesh with the emperor's creation, or the Warp and it's entities. If the Bible IS cannon in WH40k, where is Heaven? Obviously the Warp is arguably Hell, but the Warp isn't inherently malicious, it just became that way over millennia of negativity from sentient life. Where IS Jesus? God? I think whoever wrote this at GW is either massively ignorant of the previously established lore in-universe, or is trying to retcon it without realizing just how problematic it is. Abrahamic faiths are incompatible with WH, as are Zoroastrianism and Hinduism. You'd have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to make Buddhism work, but it's more possible than any other major religion currently. With the effective mortality of ancient Greek, Roman, and Norse pagan mythology, I could see those pantheons possibly mingling with the WH lore, but that's still going to take a lot of work. I wish GW hadn't taken this tack. The abrahamic creationist lore doesn't work with the Old Ones, the Necrontyr or Necrons, the Eldar, Orks, C'Tan, and many more that predate humanity by millions of years.

I think the lore is kind of weak. That this demon was born when the first human committed murder has multiple problems. Humans weren't the first sentient life in the galaxy by a large margin, and I have a hard time accepting that none of the races that are millions of years older ever committed murder out of hate. The necrontyr and the eldar are the lowest hanging fruits to pick for this argument. Also, you'd think that murder would be more Khorne related than an empire ending focused warp entity. Also, how do the 30+ millenia of empires rising and falling BEFORE the Great Crusade not count? Between the (completely unrelated to anything regarding empires) murder of Able and the Great Crusade even up to OUR point in existence you have everything from the Babylonians, Alexander the Great, Rome, the Khans, Napoleon, almost every major European country has had an empire at some point, the 3rd Reich, the Soviet Union, the United States, and everything else between now and the rest of humanity's future up to the Great Crusade, including the Dark Age of Technology, which I assume has to have had some imperial moments. Seems like GW got lazy with the lore here
That is to say that humanity has a huge impression in the warp, that can be a reason that humanity can make the emperor a literal god because of this...
you could say that the emperor wanted to destroy religion because he had a fear that humanity would create a god because of the coletive power to influence the warp.

I always wondered what the other races in 40k thought of the emperor and the primarchs...
I thought about it because (i think it was) in "Dark Imperium" one of the Eldar met Girlymann and was disgusted by a comment that Eldrad Ulthran made that the primarchs were in some aspects superior to the eldar
One reason I find the Eldar a little irritating, they’re so far up their own ass that they believe a 12 ft tall hyper-intelligent demigod is inferior to them simply because they’re human.

So why exactly Emperor needed to be stabbed? If he had power to lock Drach'nyen in sword prison then why didn't he do it instantly? If Drach'nyen powers are locked when he is in this form then why didn't Emperor simply took the sword and lock it with other dangerous things inside vaults in his palace instead of stabbing custodes with it and yelling "Run Forrest, Run!"? He could order it to be guarded by bunch of sisters of silence and custodes.
For Emperor to not do that it means that Drach'nyen still have to have power to influence others and possess things. So how exactly someone like Abaddon is able to use it? Why didn't Drach'nyen possess someone and then stab Abaddon from the back while he is occupied in fight for example? Why didn't he possess Abaddon and then release himself?
GW isn't the best at being consistent or sensible. They probably did it for drama.

Imagine a Chaos Space Marine chapter backed up by psykers, heretics and cultists. Getting very pissed off at Abbadon for his extreme incompetence. So much so that they in fact overthrow him, take his sword from him and release Drach'nyen. At which point everyone decides to unite and follow Drach'nyen while forsaking the other four chaos gods.
Majorkill, slow the hell down man!!! Seriously your speed freak pace killed this one for me. This was one of the most epic stories from the Heresy and I think it deserved at least a 20 min story time.
Now don't get me wrong. Your passion for 40k and knowledge of the lore is top notch. Plus you've researched topics I've never seen covered on any other 40k channels so you get points for that too.
Just for once let me kick back in my chair, crack open a beer, close my eyes and get lost in the story. I know you can do it!
Theory: Drach is not a name, it’s a title. Beyond greater daemons, daemons with this title represent key moments in human history. While Drach”Nyen is the most powerful, as it is directly linked to killing, there are others with the same “Echo of the the first [blank]” name. Imagine “Echo of the first scheme”, “Echo of the first embrace” or “Echo of the first despair” being Drach’nyen’s siblings.
There is an "Echo of first weapon" deamon, but his name is Saraam or close to that.
I don't know about that. Demons have names and the Emperor himself says that they cry it almost incessantly, just like this Drach was doing in Master of Mankind. Then again, if that was its name, why the Emperor did not used it to banish the demon ? THEN AGAIN .... we would not have an epic fight this way
GW wonders why all the fans think Abbadon is useless but then they go and give his sword a backstory that is way more badass than anything Abbadon could ever accomplish. I like your explanation for how he could have gotten Drach'nyen too because it implies that Ra took one look at Abbadon and thought "Oh yeah there's no way this idiot will ever use the full potential of this thing. I’ve always assumed that Drach’Nyen was able to wound The Emperor because of what they both represented. The Emperor representing the future of humanity through enlightened science and atheism vs. the repressive primal origins of humanity. It’s not so much that he is as powerful or more powerful than the Emperor. Worth mentioning that the Emperor’s origins in the book have him first use his power to punish his uncle for the murder of his father, instilling law and order for the first time in humanities history. Whereas Drach’Nyen’s origins are the parallel opposite, a brother killing a brother.

This is just my head cannon, but when the Big E put Drach'nyen into Rah, the Custodian asked, "Why?" As if the Emperor had betrayed him. Drach'nyen used this to eventually get controlled and "win" in possessing Rah. The counter arguement Drach'nyen said something along the lines "the stars would be extinguished before I could even gain full possession of a Custodian"

No Daemon Sword is going to destroy the Big E, but it probably wrecked the Imperium pretty badly.
One thing to note the emperor was already showing signs of exhaustion after 5 years of powering the golden throne while try to close the break in the psykic seal so he didn't go in at full strength.

Yes, he knew what was this sword actually is. Yes he was choosing to call it The Sword. After many years, he learnt that even his mighty resolution was no match for the ferosity of The Sword's corrupting suggestions. So he came up with a defence mechanism by his own; focusing the material world and ignoring The Sword's existence.
Cause whenever he tries to dive into his own mind; every single time, his decisions, memories and emotions were being stirred like a primordial soup of the cosmos. What he was doing against this inner threat, is to shut down and block the relevant parts of his mind like it has been thought to him.

Even though Ra wasn't eager to glimpse to his own memories and doing so was an essential part of his defence mechanism against The Sword; the allure which the memories about The Emperor were presenting was irrefutable.
So he remembered.
Just for a moment.
His crushing presence, his assuring company, his neverending wisdom, his blinding brilliance.
His last order.
By remembering The Emperor's last order to him, Endymion woke up from his poisonous thoughts which were clearly not his and focused to his steps.

Always forward. Never slowing down, never staggering.
The bases of his auramite armor's boots were long gone because of the century long friction. Yet the custodian continued.
