    I do quite a bit of welding on old vehicles, it isn't fun. As for the Lanoguard, a friend of mine used it on his Navara pick up. He was building an aluminium back body for it so he treated the chassis with Lanoguard. a year later and even though it never went on the road, rust was showing in the treated chassis where the rain had washed the lanoguard off. I wouldn't use it because it is too thin. Proper Lanolin is like a thick grease but it is very expensive. Waxoyl is far better or, old engine oil every year.

      It certainly isn't fun as for the Lanoguard we have been using it on various farm vehicles for some years now and have always found that it does a good job at keeping the rust at bay. I guess it's a question of personal experience but if the chassis members have rot on the inside (typical of transits!) then no amount of underseal to the outside of the chassis is going to make a difference. On the tractors with solid underbodies the Lanoguard has worked well for us. For the van in the video all I was hoping to achieve was to extend its life for another couple of years. A proper job would be to spray rust converting foam to the inside of the chassis members before spraying a suitable rust prevention treatment inside and out. It would have been too costly to do that and tbh I don't think it would have been effective either. The open nature of transit chassis members is designed to encourage rust in my opinion and as you know once there is rot in there somewhere it will come out regardless. Before Lanoguard we used a mix of diesel and old engine oil on the tractors but it makes a mess especially on a concrete driveway. I personally strongly dislike waxoil as I feel it just traps moisture but that's just my opinion and based on using it on a couple of vehicles only.

    Transits they are so worth saving arn't they. I am very attached to my MK5 smiley and had some tricky welding myself a few weeks ago. Watching you scraping the chassis it suddenly occurred to me that a triangular paint scraper would be an ideal tool for that job ....
    A good cheap safe way to get the van high enough for easy access is to stack sections of railway sleepers or cut tree trunks under the sills.
    Sad to see her go but you sure gave her a good send off

      @abakerslife  10 месяцев назад

      You're doing well to keep a mk5 going. Must be real labour of love. I reckon I did enough to gaurentee her new owner a couple of years respite from the MOT tester but tbh I won't miss having to do that job in the future!

      Transits rust from inside treat early is best policy.

      Hi from nz and love transits 🫶. Why are they called a ‘smiley’ in England? Is that because they usually make you cry with all the new rust you find lol 😂.
      Can anyone tell me just why transits rust so much?!

    • @FromMetayou
      @FromMetayou 7 часов назад

      @@louiselowe1568almost right but real reason is the grill looks like a smile and they rust do much because of the design of so called chassis a ladder chassis of old didn't rot like these do

    Great video! I saw all your hard work in your first video and wondered if there would be another one a year later, or if she would be off to the scrap heap. Congrats on another successful MOT! It must be so satisfying to get that pass after all that hard work and welding splatter in your face! I hope the next owner gets lots of enjoyment from her. Did you throw a free welding machine with the sale? Good luck with the channel!

      Many thanks, yes it's a great feeling to walk out of the mot with a fresh ticket. The van is good for a couple of years hassle free motoring for sure now so I hope the new owner takes advantage and gets some good use out of it. No need for me to give him my welder as he welds himself and knew exactly what he was getting into as he'd watched the first vid!

    Hi ya just been watching your vids on the transit van I also have the same year van on a LWB aswell with rust in the same places you've given me the confidence to get of my back side and get on with the job that sat on my driveway for 2 plus years .can you tell me where you got the van panels from and what size gauge of metal you used many thanks for your vids on the transit van

    • @abakerslife
      @abakerslife  5 месяцев назад +1

      Google Transit Centre, they have repair panels for transits, good for other parts too. I can't actually remember the metal thickness I used but just use something thicker than the metal of the chassis. Car parts shops like Euro or GSF have sheets of steel for repairs, 3mm will be more than thick enough. Good luck, get it up as high as you can on ramps and and plug you ears with something non flammable.

    i don't like double skin repairs at all. I would have cut out ALL the rust and put one giant peace of metal in its place.. It takes longer but I think you can trust the integrity a lot better. I'm guessing that you might get another five years out of it before you would have to do more repairs. Not sure why you like this particular example so much as it definitely looks like its had extensive rust issues. But I come from a dry climate where anything that rusty is long gone to the wreckers. Breakers.

    To be fair, gasless migs aren't the best ,good job 👍Your a man after my own heart ,road kill,fix it don't through it and Salmon Fishing !! all what i do ,although i've caught Salmon on the fly ,i prefer the shrimp ! 😁.I had a ticket on The Coquet early on in my Salmon Fishing adventures but didn't do well but had a few since ,up to 7 in the day on The Border Esk . Dress code on The Coquet defo included hat and polaroids for a lot of locals 🤣

      Cheers, I got myself a shrimping rod thinking I'd need it this summer if it was dry again It's been mostly wet all year so never got the chance to have a go.

      Can mostly be a game changer when its tough with the fly but iv'e also seen it on occasions when they won't look at a shrimp but take a fly !! i make a rig out of plastic from a pop bottle and mig wire to make a spinner then mount a shrimp on it , can work well but find it strange Sea Trout won't look at a shrimp when they must feed on them at sea. Heavy Feeder rods make good shrimping rods !!@@abakerslife
