One of my all time favorites. About a decade ago -- I immersed myself in open g. Started with a Robert Johnson song and then realized it was "Keith's" tuning. That was a gift. At the time you were post all sorts of Stones open G stuff on PT and I learned a ton very quickly. Another gift -- I didn't have to figure things out. So thanks twice man. I've learned a lot of stuff I use live. Nothing worse than playing the same crap all night and boring people.I hate being on either end of that. Switching from standard turning to open G ( and open G with slide) keeps everything rolling along and interesting. Especially with great songs Like Rocks Off. So please take this as a compliment and a thank you.
I just showed a young Stones fan how to play Rocks Off last week and now I have to say I'm a bit ashamed. That low E string is just essential ! Thanks.
James, you RULE!!!... thank you James James for making the greatest music in the history of Rock and Roll, the early 70's Stones, accessible to lowly guitar hackers (but SERIOUS fans of music) like myself! If there is any justice, you deserve another JAMES... JAMESx3! Cheers. OMG... YES!!!
JJ: It’s insights like you offer on this lesson that make me miss you so much. Intuition based on your knowledge of music with skills and a great ear. And no BS. Hope you are well.
The sunshine bores the daylights out of meeeeee!!!! Great lesson, as Ive been improving with my guitar playing (no small help from you) I've been recognising songs played in open G. This one is my favourite and as I listened to it over and over again at work these past weeks I figured I should sit down and sort it out, Lo and behold, here's James with the lesson! Thanks dude!
I love watching the evolution of YOU learning a song. The first time you posted this song it was in standard tuning, next was open G. Now you seem to have really narrowed down to open G with the low E in standard. It’s fun to watch and learn with you. Thanks.
Having a lot fun on my new player series tele learning this one. Also very convenient with this open g modification as I’m learning can’t you hear me knocking as well. Thanks James! The chord change from the boogie woogie on the 2nd fret to the 9th around 7:22 sounds so sick
What is interesting about this great song, is that the magic really happens from all of the parts put together. The main riff you are playing sounds correct, and Keith plays something similar live, but in the studio version it doesn't really happen like that. It's the same with the vocals. They only work with all 3 harmonies stacked together. It's too bad because IMO one of the best Stones cuts ever. And they've never been able to recapture it on stage. edit - and I see where you say in one of the versions you posted "still not convinced this is it". That song is indeed a head scratcher.
I just viewed your "last" video. I'm glad you gave your new name! I really appreciate your videos and the time & effort involved! Sorry about the low self esteem haters. You rock!
Really impressed man. I think you solved it. I was just jumping back and forth between you and my Spotify app on my phone with the track pulled up. It sounds like you’re dead on with that. I think I would enjoy playing it this way more vs standard.
💀🎸 yeah❗️ the T-Shirt (with the number 86, right?!) or a Long Sleeve(?!), a Mick Jagger and a Motorcycle ... a photo, i remember.... from the Exile-Periode, 1971-1972 (Villa Nellcôte, Keith‘s HomeBase, Keef‘s Command Base?! 🤔😆, IT MUST HAVE BEEN REALLY NICE, in that period ...✊🏼❤️) Thank you, „James“, „Privettricker“, the guitar „teacher“ without a FACE❗️(💭🤔😆❤️❤️) Yours, Daniel.
Wow - open G with the E??? This has to be the only Stones tune that does this, right? Keith does say in his memoir that this was open tuning, which I never understood, because the live versions are in Standard tuning (pls. correct me if I am wrong). I love this song - Exile will always be my favorite.
Tyson Rinker...maybe that’s why it never sounds great when they play it live. Because on the album it’s very obvious he’s playing open tuning and Mick Taylor is playing standard tuning
Also dude. It would just make sense he played it this way during that time period ya know. I watched your Pt version and this one was just more Keefy. With the classic suspended chord shape that he loves to use. Nice ears brother thanks for posting. I’m gonna try and get through this one this week. oh shit, gotta put that 6th string back on my telecaster ! 🤘🏻🎸
The reason you hear the e string is becasue this song is in standard. If you want to play it with all those faster notes he plays inside the verses it's in standard played in the "1" shapes
JJ, I'm trying classical guitar, no pick..what's that??? Ha ha. You have helped open my horizons. Love R&R, old stuff like Tull, TYA, Steppenwolf, Savoy Brown and many of lesser know songs. Hope to get a cool electric when I turn old (65) next month. Love hearing open G. Are there other things you use? Learning a lot from you. Great left hand work....wow! Loved your Jethro Tull video on Teacher, very cool man.
You could add capo 2nd on standard tuning and just use D Chord, G and A 🔥 this sounds good on acoustic and u can add in the similar type of rhythms riffs he’s doing using his finger with the barred hand on the ‘and I only get my rocks off...’ that’s how I do it anyway
The only thing that seems odd is , if he usually played in open G with the E STRING OFF, the 5 string deal, why would he do this song with the E on?? Of course its possible, he has plenty of guitars!! But is it possibly in standard tuning?vI have done it in standard with another guitarist, seemed good. BUT I can't argue with your sound on it, sounds like you nailed it! Thanks.
@@jamesjames9275 Thanks! I found a youtube of the Stones playing it live in 1991 and it looked like Keith was definitely playing it in STANDARD onstage. But of course with Keith who knows if he played it originally like that! Maybe it is open G with an E bass on the first recording, still seems odd to me if he did it like that but could be plus with layered guitars who knows.
I enjoyed this video. That guitar (ES-355?)has a great sound - as Frank Zappa said "the disgusting stink of a too-loud electric guitar- that´s my idea of a good time" ;)
On the record the opening lick is in standard tuning, as are the guitars in the first 16 or do bars. Then 1 standard tuned guitar disappears and an open G guitar bashing away the chords enter. Live he always played it in standard.
sounds pretty right, I definitely couldn't do any better. check out the isolated track though, there's some cool little bits and fills in there that are hard to hear on the record: ruclips.net/video/vJwjeuPzuX0/видео.html
James you always play cool songs . Appreciate all you do for us.

Fantastic! I've loved "Rocks Off" for years and couldn't figure it out. Thanks so much!
Leave it the the guy with the golden ears. James’ ability to hear and work through non-standard stuff amazes me.

Keef, always with the Chuck Berry, love it!
Thank you so very much - the Exile era shirt is much appreciated.
Exile era shirt?
Gives me Stephen Stills vibes, who Keith apparently never liked lol
JJ: It’s insights like you offer on this lesson that make me miss you so much. Intuition based on your knowledge of music with skills and a great ear. And no BS. Hope you are well.
FAN - TA - STIC !!! 👏👏👏👏 👍👍
Great lesson and cover of the classic Rocks Off. 🤘🎸

Well Done Lad!! Right on the head. Truly the best teaching on the planet!!
Ah, the Stones Ampeg years! You are correct according to the Stones book with a Transcription to the song, its Open G with the 6th down to E.
Nailed it!¡!!!!!!.Who could oppose your gift..As I always say . Keep Rocking in a free world.. thanks you have taught me so much

There's definitely a guitar in standard tuning on this one. I've always assumed that was Mick T.
Another great tutorial - thank you!
Thank s so much James for all your super Keef lessons !

this is great! I'm going to watch it and play it over until I get it. Thanks!
Rockin’ it! Great video. Thanks!
Hey thank you for posting this. You nailed it!

Thanks JJ!! One of my fave Stones songs! Appreciate the lesson👍👍
What a fantastic song !! Thanks for the lesson, JJ!! I hope the new year is good to you and yours!! ☮❤☮
James James Great lesson. Another cool thing Keith does on the low E string is bend the G at 3rd fret up a 1/4 tone and pull off to open E a
At the part where He’s sleeping right before chorus

Great work! Thanks so much, this is excellent! 😎🎸👏👏👏👏👏
Good album

Dude @245 nailed it with boogie woogie just wish we where friends :P

Ah yes. When you drop the needle or hit "play" on your favourite album of all time and the first chords you here are...
Taylor's playing on the outro is wicked..have to turn it up as the song is fading out.
Brilliant stuff
YOU GOT A DOT? I had no idea! Nice Orange Label tooooo
That one's already gone. Had it for years and posted tons of videos with it. Great guitar, but I upgraded to the 345.
Is this in Open tuning? I thought regular
Charlie's good tonight.......
could it be tuned to normal G, (6th string D) and capo at 2nd fret? Charlie's killin' it! and the horns. Ü ♫
Good thinking Woofer
Sounds more likely given Keiths relaxed approach
You could add capo 2nd on standard tuning and just use D Chord, G and A 🔥 this sounds good on acoustic and u can add in the similar type of rhythms riffs he’s doing using his finger with the barred hand on the ‘and I only get my rocks off...’ that’s how I do it anyway

THANKS!!!!!!!!!
Good teacher,,,
Which tuning do you prefer to play this in? Standard or Open G w/ E? Great tone on both vids!
I think I like this one.
☺️
