Jimmy Jim: Great lesson... and very interesting. I'm glad to hear you hold this tune in the same esteem I do. Knocked me out in '71, still knocking me out today.
That’s interesting that Keith isn’t on it. Still, to have Moonlight Mile and Wild Horses on the same album is amazing. So beautiful. Thanks for great lesson.
The dove sounds amazing.... It's hard to pick a favorite rolling Stones song man there's so many good ones. I will just say"beggars banquet the entire album is my favorite rolling stones song"
Agreed on many counts. I think the albums speak to you at different times of life. But this is an amazing track. BB is amazing because it really showed they could create real music with their own twist, and still hearken to their Blues, gospel, country and rock foundations. I find it amazing that in their music especially on Exile, you have a tough time nailing down the exact genres in each song, they can have each element flow effortlessly within the songs. Its ridiculously awesome.
Thanks so much for showing us this one, sir. Such a beautiful song. The addition of that low E tuned to G really brings out the droning note(s) with two Gs there at your disposal especially at the intro ! One of my top 5 for sure (as well). And that magic harmonic you mentioned toward the end is so sweeeet. I bet there are plenty of harmonics in there that make this one such a mainline to that “charge” we all get out of music in general, and this tune in particular. You’re my go to man for getting my head out of the crazy world of pandemics and politics and normal everyday grind. You made my day today, and many days before, and probably many days to come. You oughta be very proud of your efforts to share your abilities and love for music, with your guitar. Your laid back and generous manner as you spend the energy to delve into all these great tunes, and your ability to manifest your “ear” and guitar savvy is such a gift. I’m so grateful that you share it with all of us out here. Best to you and yours amigo 👊
Absolutely love that tune. Also among my favourites, though it only got there a few years ago. Loved to to hear it played live at the Fonda Theatre 2015 or so. I also agree that Sway is just as fantastic and very different. The world is crumbling down, but as the Stones are still out there I also have some faith in mankind.

I took a crack at this song several years ago and see that I missed a few things. Your ear is exceptional. I agree with you about the low E string ! Excellent work Sir!
Really appreciate your posts/lessons you provide to people like me for so many great songs. Incredible that people like you take the time to show others like me who have a passion, love for the guitar, how to play such classic tunes. Thank you very much!!
Thank you for posting this! It is also in my top 5 favorite Stones tunes. You have an amazing ability to break down a song down and explain it in a way that is easy for the beginning to intermediate player to understand. Thank you !
I was working on Sweet Virginia today, also a great acoustic song. Man this song has some flavor, never noticed but you have an advantage with those long fingers
Thanks for breaking down this gem. Has always been a mystery to me til now. I have been playing this on my Ibenez which I thought was a relatively cheap guitar when I bought for $230 forty years ago. I was a little apprehensive to tune the low E to a G at first, but all good. This guitar sounds better the older it gets, not sure if that makes sense or my hearing is going.
BE CAREFUL EVERYONE. YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR GUITAR BY TUNING LOW E TO G. ALOT OF GUITARS CANT HANDLE IT . ITS NOT A GOOD IDEA . THE ROLLING STONES HAD ENDLESS GUITARS AND GUITAR TECHS. ALL IM SAYING IS IF YOUR GUITAR ISNT THAT GOOD IT WONT BE ABLE TO HANDLE THAT TENSION. PLUS IF YOU DONT HAVE NEW STRINGS ON YOUR GUITAR YOUR STRINGS WILL BREAK IN A FEW MINUTES. PEACE AND LOVE TO ALL..
I read years ago he wrote the song with Rye Cooder... Right around the time not only was Rye helping Keith and Mick learn open G and “Banjo” tunings... but wrote Moonlight Mile with Mick and also Memo From Turner on the Performance Sound Track... I also read that Rye was pissed off because he taught these cats all this information and never was given Any credit for any of it... Especially Keith who he considered a friend...and he really showed him the theory of all these tunings... I think Rye expected something that he would never get from those guys that were schooled by Brian....who was tough on them both...!! Until he lost his shit...
Amazing tone from the chords and the song I think is clever and the way you explain it is clever, it would have been hard to pick it up..without your effort.. many thanks
Two G’s?? No way!! How do you hear this stuff! Of course, it sounds spot-on!! Thx for posting. (Btw...still blown away by your “Rock’s Off”, Open G tuning with the low E)
Big Applause James. Another great take on a stones number. I'm working my way through Sticky Fingers (in no particular order) and this is the next track for me to Torture. Well done man.
It's piece of music Keith wrote and played around with called "Japanese Thing" and Jagger's lyrics. You're right, Keith's not on it. Just like "Sway" Keith was MIA when they were recorded. When they did the live "Sticky Fingers" concert he joked it was the first time he played those tunes.
And yes IAW you when you say that they're feeling it, as opposed to counting. Andy Johns said that they cut this throughout a night at Stargroves, and Jagger did the lead vocal as the sun was coming up. It's a magical song with incredible dynamics. We never mention the outro; that dreamy sequence that ends the album. Buckmaster's score can not be mentioned enough either.

Hello, James. I love and appreciate your videos and lessons. I just have a recommendation if I may. When you're in anything but standard tuning, like open G here in this video, they are always the 5th, 6th, and 1st strings no matter what note they're tuned to. If you referred to them as such it would make more sense than calling them E and A strings. Not intending to offend. Many thanks for all of your tutorials....
James I've learned many a lick from you here and in the PT days, and have never commented until now. Whenever some note or chord in any Stones or Zep tune eludes me, I come here, and often get more than I needed, so Thank You for sharing. My real reason for comment, though, is to ask Why, in 30 years of playing these songs, have I never thought to tune the low E up to G ? Now I'm going through every song I ever knew and forgot in Open G and replaying them, and it really simplifies a Lot of songs! "That's The Way" , for one, is sooo much easier without having to avoid that low string! Practically any Stones(Keith) song, especially the slide stuff, plus "In My Time of Dying", "Twice As Hard", etc etc. I'm revisiting songs I haven't played in a decade because of this little Inspiration you've given me. Thank You Brother!! Guess it's time I subscribe?
Damn good JJ, I mean damn good I always learn from you, I never knew how they tuned,,,,,,, I do straight tuning. Now you know how my version sounded oh, LOL, LOL, LOL, thanks.
Actually the real talent behind the scenes of "Moonlight Mile" is the work of arranger extraordinaire Jack Nitzsche who'd done stellar work with The Stones, Neil Young and others, and also for the 1975 Academy Award-winning film _One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest_ and you can hear the music at the end of the film which is very much reminiscent of "Moonlight Mile". Like Charlie, he will be missed.
"with a head full of snow" I about wore out the tracks on that album when it came out. Do I put something lighter on the old D-18 (new from '72) than the 0.013 it's got now? For that crank up to G?
You should be OK tuning up the E string to G. I wouldn't keep it tuned up permanently, though. Just remember to tune back down when you're done playing this one!
Hi, just out curiosity, why wouldn’t have Keith been on this? Certainly, he was dealing with his demons, but his creativity on Let it Bleed, Beggars, Exile and I think even Goats head was tremendous. I saw a Stones do this live in FL on Zip Code tour and those little things that add so much emotion were a joy.
Last song on Sticky Fingers, it encompasses the overall melancholic mood of this very special album.
And yet it gets very upward and open at the end. Kind of like a breakthrough from the melancholy.
Wow !
"Sway" kind of blows me away at times.
Sway is my favorite song.

Keith’s not on it but (I think) DID have a lot to do with writing it. Supposedly Mick and Mick created it out of an old Keith demo. Or so I heard.
I think I read that they did some of it with nashville tuning. Perhaps your hearing a lighter guage sixth string tuned to g?
I think that’s Wild Horses.
