      Meh, I have two Variax and _four_ Peavey AT-200s which means I'm able to switch tunings mid-song. AT-200s also auto-tune (without changing string tension) and virtual capo-up and capo-down. Love these things.

    Just at the front end there.
    Anyway, open G really is a great and helpful way to write riffs and rock n roll. You're just more "set up" to rock.

    Another great video, Dwane. I also keep one of my guitars in open G. I've found that It is a good way to interest young people to the electric guitar, even if they've never held one. Great review of open G riffs! It's lots of fun and people who haven't tried it really should. You'll pick it up really quickly. Plus it's a commonly-used key for slide and makes it less noisy and less intimidating...for me, at least. Love your original work, too. Keep 'em coming!! I'm getting back to playing after far too many years with my guitar shoved up in the attic. I'm 30 years further down the line and since I last played "in anger" the music world has changed with the arrival of the Internet. Now there's so many sites to learn from like here that were never available before. I think I'm going to enjoy making up for lost time. That guitar in the attic? Totally useless now but I've just bought a beautiful old strat and can't wait to get into some of Keefs riffs.😊 Thanks for the demo!

      @@doubledsrockschool my favorite Stones tunes are Brown Sugar (that opening riff is killer!), Gimme Shelter, Start Me Up, Hang Fire, Waitin' On a Friend, Shattered (though I play that on an EBe cbg), there are so many! I play Pearl Jam tunes, Foo Fighters, Green Day (Jesus of Suburbia is epic!), ZZ Top Black Sabbath, ...I've also been working on adapting PF's Dark Side of the Moon for the past few years (Us and Them is my favorite) That said, I do mostly the chords not much of the soloing ... I've compiled a notebook of tunes with my shorthand version of tabs (that only I can understand...well mostly...months later I'll look at a "tabbed" tune and think "Geez, what's that mean? Why did I write it like that? 🤣)
      I took guitar lessons in the mid '60's, hated practicing and quit. When I discovered 3 string cbgs about 6 years ago and found I could play rock I was hooked! I build'em and play'em!!

    Cool video but I do want to point out that you’re playing Jumping Jack Flash wrong. On the part when you hit the single strings, on the third note you’re supposed to rotate between your first finger and ring finger. On the second repeat of that riff, the note is supposed to go two steps higher, then back to the first on the third time. It’s hard to explain it on here (that’s about the best way I can explain it) but listen to that riff again carefully, even slow it down if you can and you’ll totally hear what I’m talking about. :)

    I was just giving "Love You Live" a listen. Not sure why that live album gets lukewarm reviews from some, I think it's great and it's a real open G showcase for Keith. Anyway, thanks for a good fun lesson. I could use more detail on the Can't You Hear Me Knockin' intro - that one's tough for me. I play open G a lot, but I like to go for the low notes on the D and wouldn't dream of taking it off. Hope you don't mind me mentioning one of my open G songs - Rosetta West - Deeper Than Magic (labyrinth version) on RUclips.

    Thanks for explaining how to tune in Open G, Keith Richards style. Why did you tuned the E string when Keith doesn't use that string ? I would have liked to know what the other chords were as I am still learning and I find it difficult and too fast to keep up with some of the tutorials here on RUclips

    • @doubledsrockschool
      @doubledsrockschool  7 месяцев назад

      Just because Keith removes the top string doesn't mean everyone has to. You can still play the songs with the top string on. Most players who use open G leave it on. When you say you want to the other chords, do you mean all the chords in one song? What song would you like to learn?

    • @glyniswhitbread5417
      @glyniswhitbread5417 7 месяцев назад

      @@doubledsrockschool I wasn't suggesting anyone remove the E string, I wanted to know why you tuned it and how did you know what key to tune it to ?

    • @doubledsrockschool
      @doubledsrockschool  7 месяцев назад +1

      Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. I have the open G tuning memorized. From low strings to high strings, 6th string is D, the 5th is G, the 4th is D the 3rd is G and the 2nd is B, the 1st is D and there you have a wonderful open G chord with D in the bass. So when you play a G chord, you can mute the top string, and you'll have G, the tonic on the 5th string. It's just a memorization thing. Does that help?

      @@doubledsrockschool Hello again DD I'm sorry to be bothering you with questions about Open G tuning again. I noticed that Keith Richards has a Capo on the 5th Fret on electric guitar - is that correct ? He also played on or near to the 5th Fret on Acoustic guitar without a Capo. Do you need to use the Capo to achieve the open G sound?

    Sorry I always played them wrong in E tunning as best I could though I knew something was wrong but I only had one guitar n didnt want to mess up my tuning pegs I was a kid we had no guitar teachers. I been thinking about trying this on an old Squire strat copy and as werll how many slide songs are there in this tunning?

      I had the same problem growing up. So many of those songs sounded almost right, but something was lacking. Lot of slide playing in Open G but open E tuning is a favorite of Blues players like Duane Alman and Johnny Winter amongst others....

    Hey Double D! If you've read Keith's book, he talks about hearing bands trying to play Stones songs in standard tuning, and they just don't sound right. IF you don't know "the secret" of open G, you don't get it.

      I read his autobiographie, and I loved it. I spent years play JJ Flash and Honkey Tonk in standard and of course they never sounded right. In 2010, I learned Start Me Up and Happy in Open G and the rest just fell into place.

    Keith Richards couldn't play Jumpin' Jack Flash in open G during the Beggars Banquet sessions in 1968 for the simple reason that he learned this way of tuning his guitar from Ry Cooder during the recording of Honky Tonk Women in 1969!

    lnstead of tuning the bottom E to D or removing it try tuning it to G. lt gives you a solid bass having 2 G's and leaves 6 strings on the guitar for retuning.

    • @doubledsrockschool
      @doubledsrockschool  7 месяцев назад

      That is a great option. I like to have the D on the top. It gives a nice low-end punctuation when you go to the V chord. But tune my cigar box guitar with 2 G's in the low end. It sounds thick! Thanks for the tip!!

      @@doubledsrockschool The main riff? I'll dig an amp out and do it. Give me time to find my little amp. Probably get it up tomorrow with another BMX video filmed in like 97-2000. I'll even play it on a Keith guitar. The '72 Tele. Custom reissue as seen on my RUclips pic. No hard feelings. Just a lot of notes missing. I'll let you know when it's up. You play the opening lick to Honky Tonk Women right with the bend. I slide a full step. Keith does the slide more often these days but you're playing it like the album. I play Jumping Jack Flash in standard, yours sounds way better in the open G. Gimme Shelter is originally in open E right? I played it standard. Prodigal Son is the only one I went to open E.
