@@doubledsrockschool Check out some of my recent covers! You helped me open things up!! Slide and open G stuff! Love it! I'm still learning, as I just started a few years ago at a late age. Started at age 46! I'll be 50 later this year.
Honkey Tonk Women was the song that first got me interested in Open G and i still love playing it. Some others i think worth mentioning are: Jealous Again - Black Crowes Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones Death Letter Blues - White Stripes Bohemian Like You - Dandy Warhols
Yes absolutely -- I was totally expecting Honky Tonk Women to be #1 on the list. It's really the iconic open-G tuning song. Also I think the best Zeppelin example is probably In My Time of Dying.
Let's give credit where credit is due: Death Letter Blues is originally by Son House. Open G was used so much in the old country blues that some people just called it Delta tuning.
Open G tuning brought my playing back to life and more.Arthritis was taking away from my playing. Open TunIng has blown open doors. My fiance can't believe the songs I can play now. Many thank's to you for sharing, your great tutorials
I have to reinvent myself as a guitarist because I smashed my ring finger at work so I'm looking to develop my pinky slide playing. Good on ya mate, thanks.
@@doubledsrockschoolhe's now part of the long and esteemed tradition of guitarists who play with mangled hands. Man is following the footsteps of Django Reinhardt and Tommy Iommi. Best of luck! A right handed friend of mine (guitar player) lost half of his left index finger. Never wanting to give up guitar, taught himself to play left handed. Rhythm only but not too shabby.
First open G song I learned was " Wild Horses" which naturally led me to other open G stuff by the Stones. Even simple stuff like Walker Brothers "No Regrets" or The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset" completely transform. Moving on , some minor chords are a nightmare but they are on the neck somewhere!!

Thank Maxy! I got used to the top D string, and I use it to accentuate the V chord in a blues with that nice low D on the top string. It takes more control not to flub the notes on the low string. It would be fun to try the double G trick. I bet it sounds really rich and full. Cheers!

Thank you, Kenneth. I usually create sustain using gain-staging. I don't get to turn my amp up in my little studio loud enough to get power amp tube compression. I have a Dr.Z Airbreak attenuator that is set at about 40%, then I use a compressor pedal, usually a Keeley or an SP compresor set to a mild compression, which I plug into 2, mid-gain overdrives set to taste. The light gain stages add up to make an almost infinite sustain. Using gain-staging, you get great guitar-feedback notes at a very reasonable volume. Of course, good pick-ups helps and so does having a good set-up on your guitar. It all counts. But I always use gain staging to go a good sound without going deaf.

Keith says in his book that Mick Jagger wrote most of Brown Sugar after he showed the tuning to him, and Mick comes up with a classic! Hey man, It's Only Rock 'n' Roll.
Jail house rock is fresh in open g. Hot blooded is an easy tune in open g too.. feels like the first time sounds good but a little harder . Thanks for the video.
Faithful by Pearl Jam Daughter is actually in "double open G", in that the 6th is tuned up to another G, not down to D. That gives it a fuller sounder, with a distinct tone because of the high tension on the 6th string, also invites a more aggressive strumming approach.
@@doubledsrockschool I'm used to playing it in a very different position too, fingering the 4th and fifth strings rather than the third and fourth. Your version is very "polite". Using the heavier wound strings gives a massive fat sound, with the open 6th tuned to G providing a strong pedal tone you seem to be missing.

Have to agree I have not got the time nor the patience to play a song note for note . But what I do is jam along to my favourite tracks . Sometimes it works straight away , sometimes it does not . But what annoys me , many RUclips videos say this is an easy way to play a song . Nothing I have found is easy learning guitar .
The 3 middle strings on the guitar (B,G & D) are a form of "open G tuning. You can use these three strings and get a similar sound but to have the full sound of open G, you have to re-tune.
@@doubledsrockschool Thx. I saw here in YT one video, the guitar teacher plays Start me up in normal tuning and is no different between original in Open G... Maybe you found the video an take a look...
Start Me Up is a very simple tune, so for that one, it is possible, but if the riff is a little more complicated, it would not be possible to play properly without retuning. Just because something something is "possible" doesn't mean it is "desirable." Keith Richards wrote Start Me Up and countless other Stones songs in Open G tuning. Although I often play Honky Tonk Women in standard tuning, playing it in Open G sound richer and fuller because you can engage more strings in the open tuning.

I play open G, but I remove the "Low E" - Low G in this case. Keith Richards style. Great tuning.
I love Open G! Endless fun!
Jail house rock is fresh in open g. Hot blooded is an easy tune in open g too.. feels like the first time sounds good but a little harder . Thanks for the video.
Cool vidéo
The Number 9 riff is Awesome!
Thank you so much!!

Daughter is actually in "double open G", in that the 6th is tuned up to another G, not down to D. That gives it a fuller sounder, with a distinct tone because of the high tension on the 6th string, also invites a more aggressive strumming approach.
Thanks for the heads up!! I'll have to try that.
Hey man just saw this Pretty cool, #10 was good I liked it. I would like to hear the whole song actually. Drop a link and I’ll check it out For sure. Number 10 gave me a AC/DC - ZZtop vibe. I like it!
Thank you! Much appreciated!
Are you the actor John Bishop?? the resemblance is amazing
I am not John Bishop, but I looked him up, and yeah I can see the resemblance.
I thought Jumping Jack Flash was in Open E? But i guess you can also play it in Open G. Sounded nice!
Thank you! Even Keith played it both ways.
Agreed
Holy cow that Strat sounds magnificent. I always associate Open G with Les Pauls and Telecasters mostly.
Thanks man!! A Strats are the Swiss Army of guitars! I love this particular one. It's a Frankenstrat. Pieces from all over the place.
It is possible to play Songs that written in Open G exatly play in normal tuning, no different?
Way to put your own stuff in there Dwayne, it's great, too!!!
Thanks Eric!!
