I know, right? I bet I've come back to this video 50 times just for the 1 minute intro. It's his TONE and the simplicity of what he's playing. It's not anything complex, but he's playing it with a style and finesse that I could never achieve. I stand in awe, and it sure makes this Les Paul devotee wish for a Tele.
@TheMaxKids Part of his secret is an effects unit he uses. I f you search his videos, he showcases it in one of them. Of course, with all due respect to the unit, a lot of the trick is in his fingers, lol. I love Joey's playing style, also love Canned Heat.
I have a Squier Classic Vibe Tele which I keep in open G (with a low D) mainly for Keith Richards moments and for slide playing. However, I hadn't thought about using it for playing other Blues tunes so this was really helpful. I also have a Danelectro 56-U2 which I keep in open D for slide playing. Definitely need to experiment more.
My first thought as a beginner guitarist knocking on intermediate is "how the heck am I supposed to remember all the new chord shapes???" and then you show off the secret cheat code and I feel like the beginner that I am.
I have played guitar forever but never got into G tuning but your tutorial has inspired me to join the gang and have some fun. I will follow your licks then get amongst Keith's work with the Stones. Thanks for your post, I loved your groove and the licks.
Getting old I've eventually found out how useful exact reading can be. It simply is an 'Introduction'. Pretty and appealing, though. The great thing about Open G in my ears is, it is super easy. And even playing a small slide solo in between just takes a few hours of practice. Do it fingerstyle on an Accoustic and it hums 'Mississippi' immediately. Thankyou 😊
I LIKE the way he lets you TUNE YOUR AX to HIS, instead of just long explanations (which have their place) but just go 'here's how I do it' or 'here's how Keefy does it', etc. COOL!
At first I thought why are you making it so complicated. (I play Keith in open G a lot) But on second thought, Thanks man. This is truly a revelation. 👍🏽
Fantastic Joey. More open G would be great. I play 5 string in open G and i have never missed the low E string. You nailed the precision of playing in this style.
That was well done, simple to the point. I did sub. Never been to Ireland yet my grandmothers name, that I never met, was McCune. - somewhere south of Chicago
I love these videos just got into open g someone I admire used to play in open g because he started on a banjo and that's what they were tuned to so he kept playing in open g on guitars
Hi Joey! I'm just now getting into open tunings. This video is very informative. Thank you for sharing this video. New supporter here my friend. Greetings from Florida.
First time I’ve seen a low E in open G. I’ve always tuned that to a D. Your intro playing sure rocked a Texas blues sound. Thanks for the different orientation to the tuning.
That is the nicest sounding fender big sound really really good solid sounding six string. First thing I noticed about the video. Been waiting to say it.
Dude, that opening is just so killer! The triads around 3:50 are sweet too. I could go on - great lesson. I like open G for blues/country rock like everyone else, but I like some mystic dreamy stuff too. If you don't mind me mentioning, Rosetta West - Deeper Than Magic (Labyrinth version) is a good example.
This should say not for the Newby but good to shoot higher than your ability. G has always been the best to make you feel better than you are. That will keep you going. Stones, Cooder. Oh, Yea. Wish you showed the chords better. Like I said at first, this is to make you want to get better. Thanks !
Man, this is awesome. Years passed since I first wanted to learn how to play blues, and at last it happened ❤ I suddenly learned about open D tuning, and played for some time with that. And I just glipsed over the video that said something about open G tuning. And later then I learned that lot of blues is played like this. Thank you so much 🎉
That's same tuning I've been playing for 30 years. Leaving 6th string on E is the point. And a lot of players think Open G is good for adding sus4 like keith Richards but actually it's good for playing 7th chords
I just watched this video, the first of yours I've seen, even though you posted it a couple yeas ago. I'm a late-life beginning guitar player. So far, I've just been concentrating on technique, learning progressions, etc. Haven't really gotten into messing with tones. Just keeping the amp neutral for now. But I love the sounds coming out of your rig. I don't even know enough to describe what I'm hearing, but it sounds like some reverb mixed with a bit of overdrive. Do I have that right? I'm not sure. I'd be really curious to learn a bit about your settings on both guitar and amp to create that sound. Thanx.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I loved that intro riff!
Get yourself some John Lee Hooker...this be that and he is killin' it!! 👍
Holy SCHNIKES you are right. That was so nasty. I love it.

I've replayed the beginning of the video just to hear that riff countless times.
Definitely some Hound Dog Taylor influence as well! Love it!
Beautiful! That got my attention !!!
No kidding, one of the best most useful videos I've ever watched thanks Joey!
Nice lesson,.kudos.
I'm a huge Keef/Stones fan, so I've a Tele set up in Open G minus the low E.
Awesome, that tone is unreal
First thing I thought as well, after about 5 seconds
What’s the amp? Got that Canned Heat thing going on.

Ry Cooder. Well done. That sound is fantastic.
Thank you!! Ive been struggling with Open G riffs. This explains A LOT!
This tutorial rocks man!! Abot the intro... is a killer riff bro

After about 20 years you’ll start to get some of it. 😂 better watch the right hand too.
Just taken the saw to my Guitar😂
Seriously absolutely brilliant thank you so much 👍🎸
That guitar and amp combo are proof that no pedals are ever needed haha!!! (except a fuzz of course) LOVE it. GREAT sound
Uh.... There's a ton of spring reverb in there too.
@@James-uz2ne Uh.... yeh, he's playing into a deluxe reverb.....
I've experimented w/ using open G Terz Tuning which is basically like playing in Open E w/ a capo on the 3rd Fret
Thank you for the lesson that was really cool. I’ve been wondering how to play the chords in open G tuning, and you lot info.
Thanks
Don

That intro is everything I love
Great lesson thank you!!

Why not tune that low E string up to G so it doubles the low G? Makes for a nice droning sound.
ASK KEITH RICHARDS,WHY!😮😮😮!!!!!!!!!!!!.
@@johnbradford6845this is what I keep wondering???!?
@@BobbyBecker-t9jbut what about jimmy page?! 😂 he tunes the low E to G when doing open G.
Clean and concise instruction 👍, I wish we were neighbors
Some player my man, many thanks for an exellent watch.

Great tips, thanks.

In the first 1min, where is that dirt coming from?! Is that just amp gain or a pedal? A-MA-ZING!!!
