How are you doing today my friend? I want to thank you for your videos. I have stage 4 lung cancer and I have refused all treatment ( which I am glad I did because chemo destroys your immune system ). Anyway I was told I was going to be dead the first week of last January. So much for my problems, I am only 59 years old and I really enjoy your playing and watching your videos. Thank you for taking me away for a little while with each video. Stay safe and be truly thankful for your friends and family.

I am an old drummer. Set out to learn guitar when I retired. Something to keep my mind and hands active. So at 67 I picked it up and almost immediately discovered John Fahey, Jack Rose and American Primitive. Now, almost two years later, I play everything that I can play (which isn’t really much😂) in open C, open D and open G. Sometimes change D to D minor. At times mess with DADGAD. Can add a capo here and there. I can’t really play “standard” tuning at all. And that’s ok. The real secret is spending a year working on the thumb. It’s all in the thumb. 😬. Thanks for this video. I’m a huge fan. I watch all your stuff and have benefited greatly from it!!

I have been playing 2 nylon string guitars almost everyday for about 7 years. 2 weeks ago i picked up a Guild A-20 dedicated to open slide tunings. After hearing how amazing the A-20 sounds in regular tuning and feeling like I need 1 steal string guitar for standard I again found myself at the guitar stores. I used to play open tuning slide about 10 years ago and watching you play the slide has made me feel home sick. I just picked up a new Martin X1AE dedicated for slide open tunings (I've always wanted a Martin). This Martin dreadnought (it's sitting in my lap while I type this) with heavy strings is an absolute beast (explosive sound!). I have watch you play for a couple years now and you are an amazing slide player and a huge inspiration for me. This video came to me at a perfect time. Thank you for creating this content Justin🤙😎

I got his shovel slide guitar. If you want something fun to play with, that's it. I'm never gonna perform, so I don't care about sounding like a Nashville studio pro. I just get a kick out of messing around with it and slowly learning a few new things along the way. Just muting behind the slide, takes care of so much buzzing and harsh metallic noise......Nice vid. more to learn :)

I recently started trying to learn slide guitar and I was the same way, I mostly like to play just E standard but sometimes E flat. At first I just tried to play slide guitar without learning anything at all about it, I just thought I could figure it out, it cannot be that much different than playing with a pick. After a while I came to the conclusion that my progress was non existent and my guitar was begging me to stop playing because it was ashamed of the sound that it was making. Tuning it to Open G put my progress back on the road again and now that I have played a little bit I think I could adjust to other tunings as well. Great video, the part in the beginning really struck home with me because that was exactly my mind set, I did not want to retune any of my guitars but after hearing the part in the beginning about how Justin was resistant to change but made the move that was more than enough for me to try open G, great lessons and advice on this channel and incredible guitar playing, I have seen lots of great slide players but was never motivated to learn it myself until I saw the Crankin up the 3 string shovel guitar video, such a great song with so few elements!

      Fiddlesticks.
You got the same I-IV-V frets on the fretboard in each open tuning. Then you check whether the 6 or 5 string is the bass root. But even that's the same patterns, just offset by one string up or down. Then as far as the upper strings... well that's as far as I've gotten, but I just wanted to say I'm not daring someone else to mention the name for the 3rd time in this comment thread, but I'm not NOT daring them, if you know what I mean.

Yes! I bought a slide a week ago and everyone said open e was best to learn and while I tried that led zeppelin tunes taught me about open g and when I tried that I was able to come up with 5 minutes of material right off the bat it was crazy. I love your playing style and it makes me feel a bit more at home knowing a pro chose the same tuning that I just as a rookie flat out guessed it was gonna work

  • @billkoetting5197
    @billkoetting5197 3 года назад

Justin, I apologize if I missed Drop D tuning. To explain, I have an Ibanez AX125. It has a lever on the low E string bridge. With the lever back it is tuned to 440 standard tuning. Release the lever forward and it tunes the low E string to D. So instead of the 3 low strings at EAD it is now DAD. You can also do this by tuning the low E down a full step to D. It's for doing rapid power chords with one finger [or slide] across the low 3 strings. The D5 chord is in the open string position. The 6 string is the only one changed the other 5 are natural. How would Drop D effect playing a slide song. Love your vides!

Just going to add, that this explanation of slide tunings was clear enough I found it very helpful. So I went and looked at the lessons in the Justin Johnson store and ended up buying a package. Right out of the gate in the Slide Fundamentals video the information helped me immensely. I had no idea how many things I have been doing wrong, and how much positioning etc... were causing so many problems in my sound. I've been playing guitar for a very long time, but I never focused on slide until now. Thanks Justin, those "small" basic tips really helped me out. I have some work to do now to overcome bad technique and instill proper technique, but already I'm improved and I have no problem putting in the work, I just needed a starting point. Thanks much.

    Studying!! This'n...
(Same here bro...been playing since '90..I too have been used to standard tuning while playing slide..(Gilmour is my old school favorite)...I've only touched on open tuning shortly...but...knew that was one of the keys to better slide "sound & technique"...
    I got that "Voodoo" now....

What determines which finger the slide is on? You wear it on the ring finger but I have seen others using different digits.

Thank you so much! This couldn't gave come at a better time....last week I started having some tingling in my fingers and now I'm afraid I have carpal tunnel....my left hand is very weak and I can't play at all.....I did find that I can get away with a little slide for maybe 10 minutes or so......thank you!

Always love your playing but more importantly you're a great teacher. Seen many great guitar players who can't pass on what they know or explain it in a way the average Joe can grasp. Huge cigar box fan. Thanks Man!

I get smug about my open tuning use, but this pointed out some stuff I'd not seen before. Very lovely, Justin. Thanks for the vid.

I like the way you take the time comparing these tunings and I'll probably have to cut another nut to raise my strings a bit or shim this nut. Whatever my action is low. Or I'll just cut a New nut and saddle and level my strings.

You intimidated me a lot with this. I am just a regular guy, but I decided to go with the Open D-tuning as to me it sounded the best. Your playing in E for example sounded a little hectic for what I am looking for in Blues. So thank you man for a great lesson. Taught me a load of things and I wish I can apply them. Greetings from Finland! ...and keep up the nice work. You truly are a master at what you do!

Nice video. Sounds so good at 15:40 with your Open Em .
I think Open G and Open A are the same relative tuning and have a minor 3rd on the high 2 strings ... Open D and open E are the same relative and have a major 5th on the high 2 string . I find Minor 3rd is more of country sound. Major 5th is more of a harder rock and blues sound.
