    I remember open E to be the first open tuning I tried, mostly because our garageband often played blues songs int key of E. But the more I learned about blues songs I found that open D and open G often where the key of choice. As for now open G has become my favourite tuning.

    I pretty much live in D tuning .. I can't read music and I have to make things sound right so I pick away at it till I get it. These little lessons are great .. I always learn something. I completely changed my neck work and my finger picking with your use of the thumb technique .. I'm really having fun with that. I also tune to D with my 12 string to minimize the strain on the neck. An odd thing happened as I incorporated my thumb on my left hand as another finger, my little finger on my right hand decided it need to be added to the finger picking .. just added itself! I was a bit puzzled by it but figured why not .. Thanks again! 🤠

    One added reason I use open D instead of E is that i feel it’s easier on the neck of my guitar. I only have the one and I change tunings often. The change in tension can be hard on a guitar so I tend to go loose when I can. If I want open E I’ll just capo the second fret. Something to think about if you’re concerned about your guitar

      One MAJOR reason for different open tunings is so you can Sing in your best range. I can't sing Mercury Blues if i tune to Open E or Open G , but I can sing it better if i move up to Open A . Songs in E are very hard to sing , unless you are John Fogerty . Thats why Metalica tunes down to E flat to sing "Turn the Page"

      I’ll run DADGAD on C 😂
      The gt-1 has a super clean pitch shifter now too so I’ll do
      DADGADb
      And drop it another step or two with the gt-1 or any other clean pitch shifter. (Or up for that matter!)
      Edit:
      DADGADb also for ease on neck and my hands

    Been playing slide guitar for some years but I found with learning other instruments (mandolin, harmonica), it's good to come back to basic instruction as a good refresher, picking up things I missed along the way. Thanks Justin!

    Good video! Now try this - tune to a minor 7th & put the slide on your index finger. Now you can play any minor 7, minor, major, major 7 etc, by sliding and adding 1 fret to the minor and 2 frets to the minor 7th (as needed). You can pick any scale maj or minor with the slide and one finger. Sorry I'm so late to the party.

    Open G sounds less harsh that Open E because the 2 high strings are a 3rd apart ..instead of a 5th apart like in Open E . This give it a softer more country sound. Thats why Keith Richards prefers Open G , because alot of Stones songs are country based .

    Thank you so much. You made it easy to understand. Since I do have a semi fair understanding of chords, keys and scales, this is very helpful. I am a senior citizen, and I am a beginner, who has known a few chords, but can't play. I have old injuries, broken fingers on both hands, but I want to learn and I think I might could manage slide guitar, which I like the sound of, when played right.

    This is a great lesson. Just thinking outside the box for the moment… Maybe consider flipping your lessons on the vertical axis so left is right / right is left. Then thicken the strings in the info graphics to reflect which is the bass / top side near the thumb and rotate 90 degrees counter clockwise to show readers the image reflected from their perspective (if that makes sense). Then I can show this lesson to an 8 year old and they will get it.

    When you analize standar and Open G tunning will see that the 2, 3 and 4 licks remain the same.
    If tour are so kind ¿Could you make a work over the pentatonics in this licks? Y thing will be interesting.

    • @_zombiedude_2534

      Yeah, changing the tuning also changes the string tension, which if you do that enough it can screw up a lot of things on your guitar

    • @mixc8
      @mixc8 Год назад

      I am lucky enough that I have many guitars that I set different tunings on different guitar and leave them. This is due to that I have a recording studio. Another way to go is to pick up a pedal that allows you to stay in standard tuning but allows you to get alternate tuning such as DigiTech pedals

    @10:18 "Or maybe up to an Open F".
    Nope, that's not gonna happen to my guitar's neck. Maybe I'll tune DOWN to an Open G tuning and then take it lower to an Open F. Or find another singer.

    • @davidwittie4177
      @davidwittie4177 Год назад

      Or I might try this as an Open F -
      FACFAF

    • @zvonimirtosic6171
      @zvonimirtosic6171 5 месяцев назад

      @@davidwittie4177 From standard EADGBE, for open F better try F A C A C F (from low to high), because then you have 2 root notes, 2 major thirds, and 2 major fifths on the same fret. Then, when you move that pattern across all frets, you have 2 roots, 2 thirds and 2 fifths on any fret, for any fretted chord. Plus, you have two chord duplicates on the same fret: one on three lower strings, and one on three higher strings. So you can slide on all 6 strings, or on top three, or on lower three, your choice. And if your guitar top is tap-tuned to F, you use this tuning to play just about everything.
      But if you want open G tuning, then forget the lower string, take it out and tune remaining 5 strings to G D G B D.
