Most alternate tunings used by Soundgarden are fun to play around in. Also +1 for baritone guitars, I got an ML1 modern and it changed my world. Such an underappreciated instrument.
Could just use baritone tuning, rather than purchasing a baritone guitar as well, since the *only* difference between a baritone and standard guitar is scale length. A 25.5 in. scale length guitar will handle B standard (BEAD F# B) fairly well, if you beef up the strings a bit. Using .13 gauge strings in B standard, quite literally, will have roughly the same poundage and tension as using .10s in E standard. (I wouldn't go lower than A though on a standard guitar, though. Intonation WILL get really shitty really fast if you don't have the extended scale length.)
I think the main reason baritones fly under the radar is because people just prefer to get an extended range instrument at that point, and I don't really blame them lol
"Ostrich" tuning is most fun. D-D-D-D-D-D. Some Ds are a bit tight and tense. Some Ds are floppy and loose. With an acoustic you wan't to bend the Hell out of the loose Ds for a cool Indian Sitar sound. On electric you need huge amounts of reverb and a tremolo cranked at maximum volume.

I just love drop D for how soft it can make songs. Everlong is a perfect example- there's some beautiful soft, slow and low areas where the D string adds a sort of rumble under the chords. The chorus uses it to get some more bass for the powerchords. Best alternate tuning, by far.

@Music is Win I recommend checking out Superuknown by Soundgarden. It has a ton of fun alternate tunings to play, but my favourite out of all of it is Like Suicide. The tuning is just so unique to me; DGDGBC, it just sounds majestic. Also The Day I Tried to Live’s tuning is EEBBBB. I also recommend checking out Badmotorfinger, with Mind Riot; every string tuned to E and Rusty Cage & Searching with My Good Eye Closed; both songs are tuned BADGBE. Soundgarden is a great band, especially for alternate tunings, and is actually my favourite band of all time, they are just so unique. Highly recommend checking them out.
This was my original comment with Down on the Upside or Super Unknown...learn the whole album...lots of tunings and crazy time signatures that sound 4/4 but aren't. Just 2 amazing freaking albums. Rock on!!!👍🤘✌
MVSA, This is part of the Wikipedia article on Superunknown. I only listed the tunings, not the time signatures which are also covered following this excerpt. Everyone enjoy and try some of these yourselves. They work! Check out the article when so inclined. Soundgarden utilized alternative tunings and odd time signatures on several of the album's songs. "Spoonman", "Black Hole Sun", "Let Me Drown" and "Kickstand" were performed in drop D tuning while "Mailman" and "Limo Wreck" employed CGDGBE tuning. Some songs used more unorthodox tunings: "My Wave" and "The Day I Tried to Live" are both in an EEBBBB tuning. "Head Down" and "Half" both utilised CGCGGE tuning, "4th of July" is in a similar CFCGBE tuning; and "Like Suicide" is performed in DGDGBC tuning. ------------------------------------------------------------ Btw, I would like to note that Kim Thayall says that TRUE Drop D tuning is NOT just dropping the low E to D. He says it involves actually dropping both the low E AND the A down.anfull pitch. So low E becomes D and A drops down to G. Straight from the horses mouth And he should know. He claims they STARTED the trend. Rock on!
I recommend DAEAAe just listen to some sky sailing to get b bit of a feeling but you have to play with it to really get the feel it's very unique and I certainly would recommend it (tune down a step and use a capo to avoid breaking any strings😉)
I usually don't even bother to do that when playing Stones stuff, i just tune the A string down to G and usually even leave the high E to E to just get those tasty Keith Richards chords (think of Brown Sugar for example)
I know this video was posted a while ago, but if you see this, i just wanted to say... The Danelectro 66 is such an impractical guitar, the right handed side shoulder is higher than the left hand side, and that's if you get the right handed cut!
Here are my favorite tunings I've sort of stumbled upon through my playing with weird tunings. 6 String: D-A-B-D-A-B (good for Thursday style emo) 7 String: F-C-G-C-F-G-D (F and G allow for easy minor 2nd intervals) 8 String: C-G-D-G-C-F-G-D (The high C constantly changes to add more interesting or harsh intervals/adding mirco-tones in relation to the F string)
Robert Fripp also uses Full Fifths Tuning (C2, G2, D3, A3, E4, B4) by using a set of Octave4Plus 5ths Tuning Strings which have a .006 Gauge Plain Steel String designed to tune to High B (The Thinnest Wound String is now a 13 made by Octave4Plus because over the years string technology has improved &experimental alloys were used).
Just tried the Nick Drake tuning. And damn thanks for that man. Everything sounds so emotional and dreamy in that tuning. Just what I needed to boost my creativity.
I appreciate how chill this video is. To be honest, I unsubscribed a while ago due to how over the top some of the prior videos were. This is a breath of fresh air from this channel.
@@raydog_97 Drop A is great too, but I like Drop A# because it sounds great for a lot of genres of music. From metalcore to alternative rock/metal and post-grunge, Drop A# sounds great.
After a couple years of playing, I finally decided to play in drop d. The result surprised me a lot. It is like a brand new world is front of me. I will try and the other tunings too and I'm sure that it will be awesome. Thanks for your videos mate, they are pretty good.
So yeah, I paused. I watched King Crimson. I now realize that I have been living life so horribly wrong, how could I not have known of this godly madness.
Just retuned my old selmer nylon string to Nick Drake tuning... Love that lovely bass note on the bottom string. Great for a kind of call and response tune and as soon as you hit the strings it just screams Nick Drake all over !! Thankyou, I'm gonna spend some time with this tuning :O)
Don't know if it was mentioned in comments, but Ben Howard uses an awesome alternate tuning. He uses various different ones but the main one he used on the entire "Every Kingdom" album is awesome to play in. Mainly for acoustic stuff.
Sometimes I just like dropping my B string down to an A for E, A, D, G, A, E I found it was a subtle way to get my feet wet in alternate tunings without getting too far away from the familiar, but having enough of a change to get more out of my playing. Then there is that crazy tuning Alex DeGrassi uses for his song Western. D, A, D, G, C#, Eb which is a bit strange, but when you hear what Alex does with this tuning it is tempting to want to experiment with it. I had a guitar teacher years ago who actually made me learn Western, and it was by far one of the most interesting learning experiences on guitar in my nearly 32-years of playing.
To be totally honest, I feel like guitarists are bipolar or something about Baritone guitars. At first, we all go "Ohh, it sounds so big and beautiful." But then everyone makes jokes about downtuning and stuff. Take Drop A for example. It's the tuning that a lot of Deathcore, chug chug bands use. Everyone goes "So brain dead, tune up!" Hint Hint: Drop A is to Baritone tuning, as Drop D is to E standard. Can we get some consistency in here?
I use a version of open C. CGCGCC Having the upper two strings tuned the same gives you a kind of chorus effect and makes for some interesting chords when you're playing one of them open and one of them fretted.
Here’s one thats being used more by metal bands Its called drop “riff” tuning (really idk what its called but I’ve only seen it referred to as that So that a standard drop tuning, lets say drop A#(A# F A# D# G C) and drop the low string to say G or F# Now you have essentially more access to lower and higher notes at once. Its a simple change but it might make your djenty riffs a bit spicier
my new favorite tuning is CGDGAD. Just what ever i play sounds good and unique. It's easy to add 9s, 11s and 13s with the open strings which can to some extent be very difficult or impossible in standard tunings. It just gives such an amazing sound
Karnivool, Ben Howard, American Football and Periphery (like open Cadd9) alternate tunings are absolutely the greatest, Karnivool’s are wacky as hell, especially on ‘Themata’ and pretty much all of their songs are in different tunings
I am a bassist by trade. However, this is amazing to me! I am feeling inspired to pull out my Ibanez ‘law suit’ Les Paul copy guitar and start experimenting! Thank you.
Darth Ciliatus he used a variety of guitars: SG, Les Pauls, a Firebird, and an ES335. He used the ES in the final concert which was one of the few and the most famous Cream concert caught on tape.
For that open G, keep the low string on and tune it to D. This is the tuning Robert Johnson used and it allows for the alternate bass note when doing fingerstyle guitar or slide.
I currently have my epiphone Les Paul in open d ( aka: Vestapol ) and I absolutely love it. With this tuning one can play T-Rex's '20th century boy' and George Thorogood and the destroyers 'Who Do You Love?' with ease.
Brian Robison, dont you know that the famous "Nashville tuning" is called by everyone "the poor man's 12 string" and thats EADGBE, only the 4 lowest strings an octave higher.ruclips.net/video/2JLdPU_RKxc/видео.html
@@pauldepter6031 That's not really a 12-string, though, is it? a 12-string is 6 strings but they all have a string next to them tuned the same. Brian Robison's looks way more like a "poor man's 12-string" than EADGBE
I accidentally came across one of my favorite alternate tunings, when a friend came round to jam and told me he was tuned to C I continued to play in Standard along with him at the time, then once he had left I looked up the tuning for; "Open C" [ C G C G C E] Very easy to play with and the sound instantly has a Western Cowboy feel. It wasn't until I saw my friend again a few months later once I mentioned it, that he told me he was in; "Standard C" [ C F A♯ D♯ G C ] not open C (hence the accident), which is 2 whole steps lower than standard tuning, so I guess playing style will be similar to Standard Tuning and the Baritone Tuning mentioned in the video, but unlike the Baritone which requires a Baritone guitar, this can be tuned in, on a standard guitar with heavier guage strings. So, although I got it wrong, Im happy I did, because I actually came out of that jamming session with a recording I quickly turned into a song and a new tuning I was instantly able to write new and interesting melodies with. From my experience, I have found that Open C is also a fantastic tuning for; Finger tapping melodies, Single note playing with the other 5 strings ringing out the open chord, Finger picking melodies And actually being so easy to use, its genuinely quite difficult to play something wrong. Another interesting Tuning I saw somebody using was the; "All Fourths Tuning" [ E A D G C F ] If you are used to standard tuning, playing your usual open chords in this tuning sounds hideous. You can play your standard chords using the 6th - 3rd strings, as these are unchanged from standard tuning and muscle memory hinders you to try and alter your finger shapes to play the correct notes for open chords. That being said though, this tuning is designed to make the guitar more symetrical (you are now able to tune every string using the 5th fret ) which makes playing scales, super fast soloing and just generally finding your way around the fretboard, a walk in the park compared to Standard Tuning. I havn't done much with this one to be honest, soloing isn't my thing really, but it is interesting and certainly has its uses.
Use F F F F F F tuning for more respect.

Highly recommend checking them out.
freakboi also my favorite band of all time.
Don't forget Seasons: FFCCCF
This was my original comment with Down on the Upside or Super Unknown...learn the whole album...lots of tunings and crazy time signatures that sound 4/4 but aren't. Just 2 amazing freaking albums. Rock on!!!👍🤘✌
MVSA,
This is part of the Wikipedia article on Superunknown.

Btw, I would like to note that Kim Thayall says that TRUE Drop D tuning is NOT just dropping the low E to D.
He says it involves actually dropping both the low E AND the A down.anfull pitch.
So low E becomes D and A drops down to G.
Straight from the horses mouth
And he should know. He claims they STARTED the trend.
Rock on!
Head Down is another one off Superunknown.
It’s C-G-C-G-G-E
Sonic Youth used some awesome alternative Tunings!
quentinateacid they create tunings
HA jokes on you i'll just learn my minor pentatonic licks in the alternate tunings!
I recommend DAEAAe
just listen to some sky sailing to get b bit of a feeling but you have to play with it to really get the feel
it's very unique and I certainly would recommend it
(tune down a step and use a capo to avoid breaking any strings😉)
Your electric bill must be rediculous with having those amps on all the time...
that YT revenue
Victor Kirsch yeah but he has so many of them
With Open G, can you not just leave the 6th string on and put it down to a D?
I usually don't even bother to do that when playing Stones stuff, i just tune the A string down to G and usually even leave the high E to E to just get those tasty Keith Richards chords (think of Brown Sugar for example)
It was kind of a joke. Keith Richards took the low E off his guitar for a few tours.
@@guitarmemoir
It's not a joke. Keith learned to play guitar on an acoustic in open G with five strings.
@HUUUUUURRRR
Didn't Tyler say switching to one of those tunings would make you more creative? ;-)
DGDGBD is the normal tuning. DGDGBE is also a useful variant on a similar idea.
FACGCe - American Football tuning
I was hoping for that one.
Let's juuuuuust forgeeeeeet
My favourite of all time.
He didn't even mention Midwest emo. What an amateur
He could easily have mentioned it as an augmentation of the Nick Drake tuning cos the it's the same except for the 5th and 6th strings
@@sanny8716 eVERYTHING SAID
That blue/purple paint job is incredible
My favorite tuning is cfcfac, it is a super fun tuning.
DAEAC#E or FACGCE

Here you are, buds
AGCFAd, Open Cmadd9, and the Limo Wreck tuning, CGDGBe are all really cool
Periphery's tuning ;))) mainly used on Omega and P3
I know this video was posted a while ago, but if you see this, i just wanted to say...
The Danelectro 66 is such an impractical guitar, the right handed side shoulder is higher than the left hand side, and that's if you get the right handed cut!
Thank you George Harrison, very cool
Here are my favorite tunings I've sort of stumbled upon through my playing with weird tunings.
6 String:
D-A-B-D-A-B (good for Thursday style emo)
7 String:
F-C-G-C-F-G-D (F and G allow for easy minor 2nd intervals)
8 String:
C-G-D-G-C-F-G-D (The high C constantly changes to add more interesting or harsh intervals/adding mirco-tones in relation to the F string)
I hope you cover Drop L tuning.
Or drop z
Double drop Z
Haha Triple drop z
Talk about the brown note.
I'm calling stevie right now... gotta let him know lol
First, I need a guitar
And girlfriend
Or fingers
Get pubic hair
get a skunk
Get a banjo
THANK YOU for mentioning Nick Drake 🙏🙏🙏
Just tried the Nick Drake tuning. And damn thanks for that man. Everything sounds so emotional and dreamy in that tuning. Just what I needed to boost my creativity.
I appreciate how chill this video is. To be honest, I unsubscribed a while ago due to how over the top some of the prior videos were. This is a breath of fresh air from this channel.
You can open G with 6 strings. Works good on an acoustic guitar
Michael Greiner absolutely!
How very un-Keef of you. 😉
Michael Greiner you just have to tune the low Estring to DC and it doesn’t work with some chords and you have to mute it.
Michael Greiner you just have to tune in the low Estring to DC. It works with some chords otherwise mute it
Michael Greiner low e to d must mute sometimes

XYN hell ye brother
XYN I used have Drop A# but I tuned down to Drop A man, sounds more dark.

That acoustic guitar you used in this video is majestic a super beautiful guitar

Everyone goes "So brain dead, tune up!"
Hint Hint: Drop A is to Baritone tuning, as Drop D is to E standard.
Can we get some consistency in here?
@@royalcat10 totally agree with you! I think all tunings are great.it all comes down to the sound you're looking for for a specific song.
D#A#A#F#A#D
My favourite weird tuning.. Smashing pumpkins use it for the song 'Mayonnaise'
I love you bro
Just by you saying "pause this video and go watch another" shows how good of a person you are.
I use a version of open C. CGCGCC Having the upper two strings tuned the same gives you a kind of chorus effect and makes for some interesting chords when you're playing one of them open and one of them fretted.
was going to comment something similar figured I'd tag it to yours, I play in CGCEGG, with very similar effect. Acoustic, most of the time.
Sweeettttt! The C tuning is beautiful; and DADGAD - yup!
Thank You
fixed up my first baritone a few days ago, and IM NEVER GOING BACK!!!!!!
DADGAD is the best for folk/celtic sounding stuff.
Here’s one thats being used more by metal bands
Its called drop “riff” tuning (really idk what its called but I’ve only seen it referred to as that
So that a standard drop tuning, lets say drop A#(A# F A# D# G C) and drop the low string to say G or F#
Now you have essentially more access to lower and higher notes at once.
2:04 kerry king has no power here
Kerry king is crying rn
@@rotnmold7861 not to worry those strings are just about to be replaced
2:04 That's right we're removing the Thick E String off the Guitar and tuning it essentially like a Standard Banjo that's G, D, G, B, D.
Or almost every metal band
Karnivool, Ben Howard, American Football and Periphery (like open Cadd9) alternate tunings are absolutely the greatest, Karnivool’s are wacky as hell, especially on ‘Themata’ and pretty much all of their songs are in different tunings
Perfect fourths E-A-D-G-C-F; but I prefer Eb perfect fourths= Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-E-B.
Tom Quayle's tuning! It's hard to play chords with it, however
@Greg Peterson Of course you can play chords. But when you are used to the standard tuning, even a simple E with the 6 strings is tricky to play ;)
i tried out drop d fourths D-A-D-G-C-F
NST is my absolute favorite tuning, love dropping it half a step down as well for that low b note
I am a bassist by trade. However, this is amazing to me! I am feeling inspired to pull out my Ibanez ‘law suit’ Les Paul copy guitar and start experimenting! Thank you.
8:21 this tuning is the B standard tuning
Yep there are strings that are super thick for this tuning
"That's Robert Fripp. He's good at guitar".
Now that you own an ES335, how about making a "habits of Cream era Clapton" video?
Didn't he use an sg?
Darth Ciliatus he used a variety of guitars: SG, Les Pauls, a Firebird, and an ES335. He used the ES in the final concert which was one of the few and the most famous Cream concert caught on tape.
YES I WOULD LOVE THAT VIDEO
cream is one of my favorites and clapton is a legend
For that open G, keep the low string on and tune it to D. This is the tuning Robert Johnson used and it allows for the alternate bass note when doing fingerstyle guitar or slide.
I currently have my epiphone Les Paul in open d ( aka: Vestapol ) and I absolutely love it. With this tuning one can play T-Rex's '20th century boy' and George Thorogood and the destroyers 'Who Do You Love?' with ease.
Messing around with open tunings I discovered DADF#BE. Even wrote a tune. Later I discovered Misha (Bulb) Mansoor wrote "Epic Fail" with it.
Check out José Gonzalez he has quite a few songs on that tuning
Drop C# is my favorite tuning right now. Idk why it just sounds cool
What happened to Drop D Half step?
DADEAE or as I call it, "the poor man's 12-string"
Is that the G string down to E or up to E ? ;)
@@benleydon down I'd imagine as its 3 semitones down vs ...at least 8 semitones up
I use this tuning a lot on acoustic. One of my favorites.
You're an amazing guitarist, bro. I could sit and listen to you all day. So creative...........
I accidentally came across one of my favorite alternate tunings, when a friend came round to jam and told me he was tuned to C
I continued to play in Standard along with him at the time, then once he had left I looked up the tuning for;
"Open C" [ C G C G C E]
Very easy to play with and the sound instantly has a Western Cowboy feel.
It wasn't until I saw my friend again a few months later once I mentioned it, that he told me he was in;
"Standard C" [ C F A♯ D♯ G C ]
not open C (hence the accident), which is 2 whole steps lower than standard tuning, so I guess playing style will be similar to Standard Tuning and the Baritone Tuning mentioned in the video, but unlike the Baritone which requires a Baritone guitar, this can be tuned in, on a standard guitar with heavier guage strings.
So, although I got it wrong, Im happy I did, because I actually came out of that jamming session with a recording I quickly turned into a song and a new tuning I was instantly able to write new and interesting melodies with.
From my experience, I have found that Open C is also a fantastic tuning for;
Finger tapping melodies,
Single note playing with the other 5 strings ringing out the open chord,
Finger picking melodies
And actually being so easy to use, its genuinely quite difficult to play something wrong.
Another interesting Tuning I saw somebody using was the;
"All Fourths Tuning" [ E A D G C F ]
If you are used to standard tuning, playing your usual open chords in this tuning sounds hideous.
