[Verse 1]
When the wind blows, and the rain feels cold
With a head full of snow, with a head full of snow
In the window, there's a face you know
Don't the night pass slow? Don't the nights pass slow?
[Chorus]
The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind
Just another mad, mad day on the road
I am just living to be lying by your side
But I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
[Verse 2]
Made a rag pile of my shiny clothes
Going to warm my bones, going to warm my bones
I've got silence on my radio
Let the airwaves flow, let the airwaves flow
[Chorus]
For I am sleeping under strange, strange skies
Just another mad, mad day on the road
My dreams is fading down the railway line
I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Bridge]
I'm hiding, sister, and I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm hiding, baby, but I'm dreaming
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
I'm riding down your moonlight mile
Let it go now
Come on up, baby
Yeah, let it go now
Yeah
Flow now, baby
Yeah, come on now, yeah
Hey
[Outro]
Yeah, I'm coming home
'Cause I'm just about a moonlight mile on down the road
On down the road, on down the road
Yeah, yeah, baby
How did I not realize that Jerry covered my favorite Stones tune before now?!?!?
Same here 10-1-20
I just found it to looking for midnight moonlight.. 💨💨🍻🍻
OMGAWD RIGHT?
Me too, how have i not heard this until......... well today lol.
I'm pretty sure this was Jerry's favorite Stones song too!
Brave to cover this masterpiece. More respect for this band
Memories from another time and another life....
Aint that the truth!:( makes me alittle sad
I remember those times. I remember seeing the Dead at the bandshell near the Sheep's Meadow in Central Park...probably around '68 or '69 and Jerry Garcia's guitar playing taking us to other worlds. That was his magic.
❤
im ashamed i never knew they did this...absolutely beautiful
I watched-listened to the The Dead do a very credible rendition of The Who’s ‘Baba O’riley’ during a sound check in 1986. The Dead w/ Bob Dylan AND The Band. I’d never been a big ‘Dead-head’ but that was a hell of a show.
And I also love the Rolling Stones grew up with them in the early seventies and there'll be nobody like the Rolling Stones
OMG There’s are some such treasures on the tubes
Isn't there. If there is one shining part about the internet, YT is priceless for many things, especially old music performances you thought were lost forever.
whaaaat? I have been a GD and Jerry aficionado for 25 year and had NO IDEA they ever played this. one of my favorite RS songs. amazing. thank you !
Search out the even better one from Seattle 3/6/76
I was too young to come to Grateful D concerts peace Jerry
It's undeniable that the Stones do the epic version of this tune. But Jerry's take on this is always worthwhile. Like facets of a gem.
Version? They wrote it.
@@allanward8194 Yes, apparently Chris DeMaar gives credit where credit is doo doo.
jerry playing those pentatonic notes is so sweet
This is a beautiful version.
With a head full of snow..
This is killer.
A fantastic stones track brought to a new life by the maestro, amazing.
NOW THAT is a soulful performance of this beauty!
Garcia never plays a tune like anyone else or like the music one would recognize - I listened to My Funny Valentine??? Garcia is simply an awesome musician, he's a musical genius. Genius's are always off on a tangent, somewhere within the reality of the point at hand.
Of course no one can recognize this, they probably didn't rehearse or make up their minds they were going to play it until that moment the piano player started dllying about the notes.
Now that I am older still couldn't or can't pony up for one of your Great Guitars 120,000 away from the 12 string I think Rickenbacker!
It’s a honest, heartfelt attempt..nothing more, nothing less.
I was at this show.
it causes my nervous system to cease it sounds so good and that camera angle but need a good box high to really feel and you had it man! uuggghhh how did it feel how did it look!!
You are so lucky! From a new head to an older one: don't you let that deal go down!
Me too. I sat right next to ya.
awesome cover of a killer song
Favorite Stones song
Well done
Actually there were many connections between the Dead and Stones. The Stones helped out the Dead on their European tour in 72,and shared flights in US while on tour. Also the Stones tour manager who got disillusioned after Altamont was poached by the Dead, because they were chaotic and saw how organised the Stones had become. Then factor in the way the Stones introduced what is now called Americana..clearly there was crossover between these two bands
Lots of covers the stones did the dead did just after. Around and around was one. I was learning guitar back then I copied the stones more but realized later in effect had learned many dead songs. Funny in college I was acarones fan but all roommates were dead heads. There were hours of conversationscre both bands
This is a revelation
I love the stones but the dead nailed it down here , excellent man, excellent!!!!!!
Not the Dead, this is Jerry Garcia Band with Keith and Donna
Bullshit. They slowed it down way too much.
Thanks so much wanted to hear this for a long time could not find it even better now can see it performed jerry is awesome
Ah, the short-lived Travis Bean period. And one of the nice things about the JGB was that on these ballads you could actually hear Donna sing (as opposed to shout), and sing well.
Now, get this: Nicky Hopkins, who played piano on the original "Moonlight Mile" with the Stones, had played with the JGB the previous winter for several months. Don't know if Nicky-- wonderful guy, terrific musician-- inspired Jerry to cover this song, but I'd like to think he did.
I heard Jerry say in an interview once that he was sorry they never gave Donna her own monitor
and she is in key here... lovely voice
@@TheRollingStony jerry was like st augustine!!
I think Donna always sounded good with JGB.
I don't think your info is correct my friend it was actually their trumpet player Jim Price who played the piano on Sticky Fingers, Nicky Hopkins is on a lot of the Stones catalogue from that period but not on MM
Only Jerry, Only Jerry.....can do this.
Sublime.
Totally awesome and beutiful video, from back in the day...
Garcia's moonlight goes further than miles....
I can't find it on iTunes nor Amazon. Does anyone know how I can buy this?
you should be able to save it as an mp3, just google MP3 youtube converters, lot of free ones.
There's always a lovely haze which shimmers around a Dead interpretation /performance....
Classic
Thank you Donna
Really special. Thank you.
Oh friggin my!!!
I met Jerry and the band including Bear, who dosed me and turned me on to one of his dealers. so their planting a Stones tune. I don’t think the Stones could play Grateful Dead and make it sound better than the Dead , the fact is they never tried. This sounds better than the Stones own version. If you can prove me wrong, let me know. The Stones dressed up with leather and payed the price of that type of gear at Altamonte. One way or another this darkness got to give.Jerry could play circles around those dude’s. ⚡️🎸⚡️🖖🏽⚡️
Awesome version! Thank you
Thanks Jerry & crew....see you on the flip slide....
04:25 and Jerry dancing on that, thank you
Sorry to sound like a know it all...this is Paul Buckmaster's masterpiece. His arrangement of this song lived/lives on. Peace and Love to all
He’s a genius. Tons of great work for Elton also. Indian Sunset.
That Travis Bean guitar sounded fantastic, it's a shame it didn't last long.
Loved that guitar too
FREEBIRD!!!!!
Thank you..Best Song from Sticky Fingers!!!
Written by Jagger/Taylor..
Can't believe I'm just seeing this now for the 1st time. Was at this show... shot photos from the apron. Great times!
Ahhhhh this is beautiful GinaD ❤️falling asleep to this lady
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ lots of hearts
How are all these Jerry fans not realizing he played this? I bet you passed it over because it always starts so slow and nothing like Moonlight mile. I always wished it would go full tempo and the whole band would play it.
3.6.76 @ Moore's Egyptian Theater is the GOAT
Are we all here tonight are y'all listening! It's 2022 y'all there?
My dreams these fading...
Thanks
Makes me wonder about Life, completion and the pathways which take you around the World. It's not so concrete that it distracts and kiLLs your spirit. Unless that is you allow it to destroy Everything once gained. Those winds are voracious, and they send our worlds ablaze. But, it's beautiful not to have those permanent reminders. They do make for good video...
Stones. Not a big Stones fan, but this song, Jagger's voice at the end...chills./ If anyone needs to hear at least one good dead song, listen to 'Jack Straw' off Europe 72, only that version. That makes me cry. Chills, crying....I better take something for it.
all you need for it.....IS MORE OF IT!
earGuitar
Checking out that song right now never heard about it until I read your comments. Thank you sir for the heads up
Seriously? How can you not be a fan of the Stones?
Jack Straw 27/8/72 for me but there all great
It's chilling because it might be more monstrous and demonic than anybody's guess.
Gonna warm my bones....
thx for posting -
Like many others have said, this is one of my favorite Stones tunes. And I love the JGB and saw ‘em a bunch o’ times so don’t get me wrong… but this one’s a snoozer. I’ll stick with Mick and Keith’s version. 😄😄
Whoa
Finalky caught the stones do it live in 2015. Just incredible. Woukd have given a pinky to be in the house when garcia did it
The sound of...strangers...
hmm perfect
Hello Jerry’s kids🖖 minus a finger HAVE A GRATEFUL DAY
It's like garage band music. Or maybe they were all just tripping like the old days. I'll take Jerry doing his version of one the greatest songs of all time any time.
Yeah I didn't realize that either but he does a good job at it
I hope this song is playing next time I die.
nice!!!
they probably just worked it up on the spot. clearly not broken in yet. I don't know of any other versions,
but I think its got soul.......
yes likely a throw it together piece, and varying as the show conditions do
Great Stones version! VERY COOL!
Wild never knew too but did it well.
Personally, I like the Stones version better, it has more feeling to it.
+Donna Simek The Stones were at the absolute top of their game when Sticky Fingers came out... Freaking great record... This is good, too, of course.
no point comparing art
..said the blind man.
Blakely Creative right. It’s a awesome cover from one of the stones greatest tune
Thank god for the Stones .
yeah that's right only Mick and Keith can do this haunting song the way its intended. let the airwaves flow
Keith Richards is not on this . He gets enough credit for stuff he didn't do as it is...
scott mclaughlin and Theo, you’re absolutely right. This one wasn’t Mick and Keith, it was Mick and Mick. And I believe Mick Taylor didn’t even get a credit.
@@CliffinAZ That is true. Same thing for Sway, Time Waits For No One, and Winter.
Me too...
I wish he would have done this more often he would have polished this one.
In the studio.
I hate to say this. I really do. But was she ever on key?
Yes. Most of the time. But you probably know better than Garcia!
Jerry...
holy shit i cant believe the dead covered this song
JGB to be clear, not Grateful Dead ✌
I wish they hadn’t. It’s awful!
fuck yeah.
Down...that... 🌕 Mile
The one thing I've always loved about the Stones is that, with very few exceptions, even their most languid ballads have a kick to them, a section where the beat kicks in at a moderate tempo and completes the song and accentuates its urgency. This version completely lacks that tempo change. A lot of people compare this live version to the Stones studio version. The original version was , indeed a classic, and the live Stones' version I've seen on RUclips falls short of it. This version, just by virtue of eliminating the last, most urgent, final verse (plus a couple of others if I'm not mistaken), falls short even of the Stones' imperfect live version.
Whatevs bro
The "studio" version has lots of overdubbing, basically impossible to reproduce live. Best to just get confused and let the music play, brother.
Who could ever touch the Stones' version? are you kiddin me?...
Stoners version?
your point?
He anit trying too. I’m sure jerry know how epic and incredible this tune is
Keith!
I want this played at my funeral. Along with highway to hell
Stones.
A heavier version i hear & slightly more raw.
Interesting version, but nowhere close to the Stones masterpiece.
By your. Side
Who else is in this band.
Donna.
You can’t improve on Jaggers vocal. It’s one of his best of his career.
I think the Stones would like it.....very much..
Book 'em Dano, Murder One. They ruined it.
Sounds ok if you listen to it at 1.75x speed.
My God. I expected a mauling of this song and yet what I heard was reverential.
Charlie...
Jeff...
mick taylor wrpte this
Open tuned track written by Taylor? Taylor writing lyrics? Now - I do know that Keith was NOT around for the recording of this track...but, it's quirkiness is all Mick Jagger. It's sounds like a singer - who plays guitar as well - came up with the signature "eastern" sounding riff/melody...Mick Jagger has been playing guitar for a LONG time as well...Songs like Hold On To Your Hat SOUND like Keith wrote the main riff...but it's all Mick in open G...he has it down too (which is why Brown Sugar's main lick is all Micky J.). Mick Taylor laid some great guitar work OVER the song...but I disagree that he wrote it...he was only in the band for what - a year and a half at this point? I doubt he would have imposed himself that much, that early...he DID start to impose after Exile...Plus - nothing Mick Taylor ever did AFTER Moonlight Mile sounds like Moonlight Mile...It's open tuning drone string stuff - Mick and Keith's forté - NOT Mick Taylor's...In MY opinion that is...as a guitarist as well, this is my opinion. Mick T. always said that he "wasn't challenged" in the Stones and would get BORED onstage...But - when he left - what did HE DO??? Nothing. He didn't do any Pat Matheny type stuff...Ry Cooder type stuff...Nothing. Just tired blues with OTHER people singing for the last 30+ years. Ronnie was more proficient in other bands, but he brought the FUN back to the Stones. Count the smiles onstage when Mick T. was in the band and count them after Ronnie Joined...MUCH happier band. I was going to put the caveat in there about the HEAVY dope use when Taylor was in the band but that continued on the '75 tour that Ronnie was on and through the Some Girls tour, etc. So, even with the drugs, the band had/has more fun with Ronnie than with Mick Taylor. I'd rather the Stones be together with Ronnie than broken up because of Taylor. Anyway, enough about that huh? :^) Take care!
Mick Taylor played in an open key very often HE WAS THE SLIDE PLAYER. I agree it is not likely he wrote this song. The credits on the album would show that though. Cheers.
Mick Jagger wrote this song. In Kieth Richards autobiography he says of this track, "It was all Mick." Kieth was too strung out and wasn't even in the studio for this one. Yes, Mick Taylor added some great slide but it was all at the direction of Jagger.
Rober: You are correct. Mick Taylor played open tunings. Hell Brian Jones played more open tunings while he was in the band than Richards did...
Actually Mick Jagger wrote this in the studio (with Mick Taylor.) Jagger also played guitar on it, which you can see when they do it live
Did Jerry make a studio version.
nope
ace
is that female singer Donna Jean Godchaux ???
Yes. Who also sang backup for Elvis songs and some others as she was a local Muscle Shoals Alabama singer. She would go after school & sing backup on whatever was needed at the time.
none other than the Pitch Witch herself, hacking it up.
They missed the best verse out. And tho' Mick Taylor was one of the most, perhaps THE most sublime players of an electric guitar, he did NOT write Moonlight Mile - Jagger and Richards did, He did grace it perfectly, tho' way beyond this dull, partial, half Dead trudge through it.
Darklinger AEld-ri yes he did write it, look it up
Richard's didnt even play on it..Jagger played the riff on acoustic ..he wrote it with Taylor
Songwriting credits Jagger- Richards ASCAP. End of story. Taylor fanboys 🤣
Take more serious informations before writing.
Who is the female vocalist?...
Donna
Donna Jean Godchaux. Her & her hubby played with the Dead & Jerry' side bands in the 1970's.
