My wife grew up in Scotland and taught me the Scottish version, which was a bit more bouncy, she had a beautiful voice. She died a few years ago the tune brings me back to our amazing journey together Thanks
It’s an old Scottish folk song. The original author is unknown and there’s been many versions of it, but Jerry’s version is the only one that can make me cry 🥀
I collect Peggy-Os. This is a top tenner for sure. Jerry’s voice…the drumming, his playing…makes one wish that the best American rock n roll band was still doin it’s thing. Miss ya, Jer. NFA
May 11, 1977, Saint Paul Civic Center - my first Dead show. Just before my 16th b'day, I went alone 'cuz friends weren't into this concert stuff yet. I Did not know what I was in for with the Dead, but it was obvious well before the music started that a Dead concert was very different from the handful of previous concerts I had attended. What band! They'll always have a place in my life and my heart.

Nobody in the history of rock has played with half the heart that Jerry did. I saw him open a show in Norman, OK with Pretty Peggy O back in 76 or 77. It was amazing. Great man!!
thankyou, thankyou, thankyou...this is such a beautiful song. thank you boys. rip jerry, pigpen, keith, brent and vince. thanks for the beautiful music and times.
I've said the same thing my friend. I hopped on the bus about 6 or 7 years ago and up until recently the dead is all I jam sometimes lol, Jerry is a sage wizard with tales to tell that we really should pay attention to
10th grade sophomore in high school I caught two shows before the legend past at his time. I know the legend still lives with all of us. Dead Love For Ever

If you want one of the MOST heartfelt versions, give a listen to the June 1994 version. Jerry knew how to pull emotion out of the sky. I cry EVERY time I hear it.
And I'm bummed 😔😞😐 out because I didn't get to see 🙈 them in '70 & '71. These shows sound good if not great 🤠👍😊 . It's a treasure trove of excellent music 🎵🎶 that sounds better than any time; unless you were present at the live show!
I totally agree. Saw the dead once and they opened with this. It became and forever will b my favorite. I fall in love again and again every time I he6it
Jerry I miss you so much. I’ll never forgot growing up touring since I was a kid listening to the sweet Grateful Dead. I listen to this to emotional 😭 punish myself. Jerry no one will ever be better than you were!!!!!
One of favorite songs to listen to and play. The melody just has endless possibilities to noodle on. Feel like I am channeling Jerry during this song, just let my mind go and his soul shines through my fingers!
A lovely tune. After starting to trade tapes in the 80s discovered this gem from a 1977 tape and found the vocal and music so uplifting. Always loved the solo in between vocals.
This is my pick for the best Grateful Dead concert of them all. Now I know many of my brothers and sisters will disagree with me about that statement. But what I am sure we can all agree upon is that there is no better example of Peggy-O to be found anywhere! And that would include the studio version that they left on the recording room floor. Only the Englishtown New Jersey show gives this version competition. In this one rendition of this song several of my friends finally came to understand what it was about them that we came to see. Thanks for uploading. Garcia for Life. RIP. From the Carpathian Mountains with Peace.
Keith has always been the X-Factor, in my opinion. When he decided to wake up at the outro, he turned what was already a great rendition into one that gives me chills.
I worked Back stage at the Englistown concert in 1977..I worked in the heliport. I saw jerry garcia drop a bag of qualudes will he WAS TAKING OFF ON THE HELICOPTER, 10 Minutes later Jerry radioed his security people and they asked me if i found a bag. I gave them to him and he gave me a handful of ludes I remember it being really hot the weekend...I still have some good pics..
Me, too, brother. Tough break up. I don't know if she ever fully opened up. And in the end she was so closed up she frustrated herself. Now it's time apart. There's so much baggage she has to face. Wish her the best. Hoping some way down the line she reaches out.
Just lucked into this gem on the recently released record store day offering of the 5/9/77 Buffalo concert. My favorite song of the show. Pure sweetness by Jerry Garcia.

I saw the Dead show on the 25th/77 at the Mosque in Richmond ....this takes me back there to such a great degree awesome Peggy-O version yeeeeoooowwllllll
Richmonder here. Wasn't born yet, but 5/25/77 changed my life as soon as I heard it and it started an obsession. The dissipation of 'the other one' into 'wharf rat' from that show is embedded in me forever. I sometimes like to think that on the eve of their trip to Egypt looming the Arabian artwork and design of the mosque might have inspired the band just a little more that night.
For all those of you who don´t know, this song is actually a Scottish folk tune. And what a gorgeous and quintessentially Dead-like this performance of it is! :)
I have so many versions of Peggy-O. Saw some great ones too (most notably Englishtown), but this St. Paul version, within the context of the songs played in the first set that night, just add to it's greatness. One of the overlooked gems of May 1977. Missing Jerry terribly whenever I hear this, and especially so with your photo montage Chase. Your 'ups' of the band are just the best. Thank you.
Jerry Garcia was related to cousins of mine, the Clifford family in San Francisco. They were his grandparents! Jerry Garcia was like so many of us here in America. We are Americans! 😃

To those who say "this show or that show had the best Peg" well, that is pretty subjective mostly...We can all agree that this is an awesome Peg, but others may think thisshow or that one is better BUT, ya know, sometimes the individual may be stuck on a particular version where maybe Jerry forgot some lyrics or his voice was super raspy or he dropped his guitar or whatever, but to that one person, it was the best Peg for him or her because they were there, twirling and loving life :)
That's part of the fun, isn't it? People turn others on to a version that may have showcased another aspect of Jerry's and the Dead's magic. I will say that any Peggy -O from spring and summer of 77 is pretty amazing and, for me at least, a cut above the rest. Jerry's solos and his voice were both in prime form.
Jerry had more soul in his little finger than there is in the rest of the music industry.
Or even in his missing middle finger.
I have to agree with you 😇❤️✌🏽🐻🌹🐻🌹
