Such a stellar version of this majestic tune. In fact , it's my favorite version. Nothing beats those Garcia/Hunter ballads. People who do not understand the Dead, do not understand the absolute beauty the band was able to achieve with tunes like this. Makes me cry every time. There is no band that sounds like this. They are utterly unique.

One consolation of being nearly 70,
is the remembrance of a time when
one could experience music that flowed unencumbered, from the very real and soulful spirit of the age in which we lived. I’m sad when I think about the youth of today, that haven’t a clue of the vast and powerful realms that tunes like this would transport us to. The music of today seems to keep the heart and mind expansion to a minimum.
Today young people seem to have resigned themselves to a future filled with uncertainty and meaninglessness.
I embrace my seniority, and look forward to a time when my journey in this realm has concluded, and opens the door to a majestic place where struggle, strife and anxiety have no quarter. ☮️

This song definitely reminds me of where I live. A yellow grass farming Valley in California right besides the Sierra Nevada mountains. So many GD songs bring back camping memories and driving up to lakes, black bears, and gigantic granite boulders. Now days I see it as my duty to provide these songs for my friends on my guitar.

    to catch a single tour.
    feel it in my bones--
shit, i feel it in my soul
and i know i'll always feel it,
getting in the way & old.
    Mines a simple story,
    many times been told--
    of a heart turn cold
before i let it be bought.
    Got what i've got--
not a lot but it's mine.
    Livin' the good life,
    havin' a high time.

as for those with jerry guitar questions, I'm pretty sure he was still playing the Travis Bean in this period, hadn't ot the Wolf back yet. I actually think that was his sweetest tone ever with the Bean, had to do with the guitar, maybe even more to do with the real apparent ethereal state he was in at the time, around '77, to have made all this surreal music, vocally and on the guitar.

everyone misses a note now and then, but she butchered some stuff. Playing and Scarlet in particular. Now on the other hand, when she was merely harmonizing, she could be spot on, and mostly was fine in that role. When given the room to "solo" she was bad, reeeeeealy bad. That's my thought anyway

No question that Donna made difference. When she was good, she was really good. What I don't understand is how the rest of the band let her sing so off key on Playin', etc. Clearly, someone must have realized she needed a louder monitor or whatever. She knew how to sing on key. I wonder if when she did sing off key, it might be because she was trying too hard. It must have been a challenge to just stand up there during long, spacey Playin' instrumental jams, looking cool & cute, swaying to the music, waiting for your turn to sing. When your turn finally arrived... wammo! you belt out a super enthusiastic wail, but you're flat!

I too am in the "I love John Mayer camp". I think he has the potential to totally re-create the Grateful Dead, hopefully for decades to come. Jerry's gone, it's pointless to lament that and to compare anyone to him. I've been to 9 Dead & Co. shows, at least one for each tour to date. I think Mayer is getting better & better at this. I also found that I like and appreciate his playing *even more* when I'm listening to recordings of the shows, even more than when at the shows themselves. I wonder if that might be because I like his playing more than his stage presence. Regardless, think he's doing great. Oteil too!
