My favorite Comes a Time of all time. Every aspect is superb from Donna's harmonies, Bobby's harmonics and crazy chord voice leadings, Keith, Phil, drums and that end jam wow. It develops into a life of it's own with Jerry pouring emotion. Thanks for posting this version up
Donna is so good here, She adds so much to them, even in an off night where she couldn't hear herself, there are moments where she just shines...and just goes for it, gotta love that.
They never needed Donna , only the men liked her because u could c through her dress ! Us true Deadheads were there for the guys in the band ! They never needed any backup singer ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹🔥🥀👻👽🪐🛸🚀🔥🌏
WHAT??!?!????? The best decision they ever made was to get rid of her. Every once in a long while she did good, but over all she ABSOLUTELY SUCKED!!!!!!!!
I was never a fan of GD music because I never really listened to it intensely. As a former background singer with Melvin Seals & JGB I am determined to learn all the GD songs that I can. I am now officially a deadhead! First time I listened to this GD song and many more this past weekend. I’m hooked! Line and Sinker ❤
One thing alot of people dont understand about jerry garcia, or the grateful dead for that matter is the raw emotion and true power behind every riff, note, word and melody. that bob, and jerry and phil and mickey wanted to portray when they played their music. when you listen to the music, dont just hear the words, or the solos, hear the pain, heartache and happiness behind every aspect. and it will set you free.
When people are paying good money to see me? Yes, I do perform to the best of my abilities. These guys became so complacent because they knew the venue would fill up no matter what shit they dished out. Some nights there was no passion whatsoever, they were just going through the motions and grabbing their money.
Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.
Around + around oh reeling + rocking is all I got say ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹☠️💀⚡️👽🪐🛸🚀☄️💥🔥🕊️🪽🪭lady with a fan , I’m a fan of u ! ☀️sunshine day dream 🔥fire on the mountain ! Have a grateful life !
Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand Says "don't you see?" Gotta make it somehow On the dreams you still believe Don't give it up You got an empty cup Only love can fill Only love can fill Been walking all morning Went walking all night I can't see much difference Between the dark and light And I feel the wind And I taste the rain Never in my mind To cause so much pain From day to day Just letting it ride You get so far away From how it feels inside You can't let go 'Cause you're afraid to fall But the day may come When you can't feel at al
This and Mission In The Rain from the same album are Jerry in his perfect space. He loved and lived the most painful ballads. You can't sing them if you can't feel them. The day may come when you can feel it all.
Miss Jerry forever! ❤💔❤ So much raw emotion. No one can ever elicit emotions both vocally and with the guitar. Don’t miss the notes in between. This is one of the sweetest versions I’ve ever heard. Tears flowing every time. This song has gotten all of us through some very tough times. ✌️💚
It still makes me cry too because I was so inlove with him plus he was to me also ! What rockstar comes half way across the county to find u ? He tried but went to the wrong island for me but nobody knew him so he had a restful vacation ! 🌹🐰🐇☠️💀⚡️🥲🪽
You know it baby. I love you. Happy Thanksgiving 2020. I am thankful for my fellow people, fans, followers, etc. That crowd was home and family. Undoubtedly.... I love you
I think this song is appropriate for every single person on earth. There comes a time for everyone to make changes. No matter the switch. We all hate change, but must do what's necessary, and adapt to constantly changing times....
Chase, I listen to this song all the time. My mom died this March 23rd out of the blue. My dad on April 23rd out of the blue. Fuck, I lost them both. I love and miss them a lot...They're gone and nothing's gonna bring 'em back...But memories. Comes a time when it's up for all of us peace, Chase.
Brokedown Palace and Black Muddy River are wonderful songs to reflect on loved ones lost. We played Brokedown at my Dad's service and it was beautiful. There is a time for us all but this song to me is a song of introspection, to fill our lives with meaning and love while we still can. Peace and love.
+PlanTonto My mom is slowly dying of cancer. This music is the only thing holding me together right now. Without it I'd probably shatter into a million pieces and no one would ever put me back together. Blessings.
Richie T When she does, you will be shattered inti a million pieces. Get your support ready, I didn't have the luxury, if you want to call it that, to be let down sowly, it was completely unexpected and that has fucked me up the rest of my life Be well, hold her hand, cherish every moment. Make it right and say goodbye.
Possibly, the greatest 11 mins of live music ever played. I’ve been listening to the Dead since ‘84. Seen a lot of shows, Dead and others. Back in the day, I had over 750 tapes. I’m not saying this is my absolute favorite moment in Grateful Dead history, but, I think it’s their perfect moment. Jerry’s first, short and very simple solo, after the 2nd verse, is absolutely perfect! Not mind bending, just Jer and Keith, playing the simplest stuff ever, but perfectly. The final note, floating up and away into a beautiful silence as Jerry sings “day to day...”. Not exactly Coltrane’s Giant Steps, but just right, to my ears, at least. The ending jam is not something I can explain in words. All I can say is, it’s original, simple, unlike anything anybody else would play, and absolutely Perfect! Grateful Dead-Goddamn, do I Declare!!!
So much emotion from jerry in this. I can't tell you how much this one song has gotten me through. Getting sober from h then relapse and sober again and I always come back here when I need the feels. Thanks man
And all these years that I have known that 1977 was my best, favorite year, it took me until now (whenever that is) to realize that 77 was my favorite year partially because the Dead were rockin' it as well. Celebrating 50 years (Springfield, Massachusetts 1973) and still rockin' an' rollin' in what's left of the free world. No regrets, souvenirs? ticket stubs and a few sun rotted t-shirts, photographs? None that I took myself but a huge multiverse full of awesome memories. All the things I planned to do I only did halfway, most of what I used to remember pushed out of my ears- there is room in my head for nothing but song lyrics- many sung by the Dead. Love, respect, peace and happiness to all- the more that you can gather is just more that you can lose- thanks for the memories- my heart (broken) is warm🕊️🎼🙏🕉️🙏🃏🎵🗝️🌬️🌀⚡⚡🎶🛠️🍁🍃🍂🦂💫🏴☠️🙏🕉️🙏®️
Sitting here in limbo, with tears listing to COMES A TIME. The beauty and magical voice of JERRY, will bring a smile like no other to my face, with tears. I love and will forever miss that beautiful soul
So sad that the remaining members took all the music down on the internet to cash in. Jerry would be pissed. But now he’s playing and singing into his next adventure. I hope I meet him again on that sure plane
The great cellist, Yo Yo Ma, once noted that the difference between a good musician and a great one is the space between the notes. Listen to Jerry's solo for the best demonstration of that. He makes it sound effortless. That's what the best do: make it look easy. I just discovered this recording. It's wonderful. Thanks to whoever posted it!
Rest in peace, Mr. Garcia. Listening to this, one of my favorite pieces of music of any band, on what would be the man's 78th. He's smiling down on all of us
jerry's solo in this particular version is one for the ages.... This song is just one of the most beautiful pieces of music to grace my ears. Thank you Jerry, Phil, Bob, Mickey, Billy, Keith and Donna.
I just saw Furthur perform this song on Sunday at the Greek. I've never seen so many people crying all at once. I don't remember crying that hard since my brother died. What a beautiful song.
Grateful The Dead were introduced to me! Nothing has ever touched my heart so purely and perfectly.....Don't give it up, you've got an empty cup that only love can fill...
I put the headphones on this morning and thought, " oh. this must be either a studio version I've never heard, where they did some arrangement variations - or." then I hear jerry's voice, and I'm thinking, "is this some lost sober period I somehow forgot about?" (Because it's obviously Donna and Keith, but now I'm thinking - "OK, harmonics going on sound more like something Tom Konstantan would do". and half way through song, I can't make heads or tails of how what I'm listening to has been put together. then I discover it's a live recording from a concert? -what? can you imagine the popularity and overall impact of this band on contemporary music had band members been less "free-form" with their personal lives? I mean, I'm no anti drug person. I am 56 and still do my share, but this band - talk about genius. putting something like this together and it just happens to be another night on stage. like so many others. and they pull this off? un-fucking believable.
The beauty of the dead... going to see horrible shows just to catch that one show, that one moment when we all converged into love. Thanks for the experience
Chase, from one intrepid traveler to another, thanks for these wonderufl videos. Oh that which was May 1977, if only I had known.......only caught Englishtown that year. But May, that of St. Paul, Ithaca, Buffalo, Hartford, NYC........omg, omg - simply amazing.
this song will be forgotten like the the dead sea scrolls, like the libraries of alexandria. this song like so many are not commercial nobody gives a damn, but too us it saves us it they are us. peace to us
I can't believe it's been all these years.... I don't listen much anymore.... I can't explain it.... I hung out with Bobby while at The Ohio State University in The Hyatt at Capital Square night before Buckeye Lake '93..... Jack Straw Foolish Heart Bobby had some nuggs and He Twisted We Shouted! Still Dead After All These Years!!!
Not a huge fan of the donna and keith days. Still love em and there the best . But they did have donna tell jerry they were gonna be part of the band. No invite nothing and they destroyed every hotel room they got. My man jerry just chilled he gave all he had and he def is always. The best.
"When the words come out Like an angry stream You hear yourself say Things you could never mean When the heat cools down And you find your mind You got a lot of words You've got to stand behind"
Oh hell.....I don't even mind when Donna Jean is a having maybe a slightly off night. This is the best line up of the Dead. Wouldn't trade Donna Jean for anybody.
This is one of the most beautiful things that I've ever heard. It's about the most heartfelt renditions of this song. I can't listen to this around other people because I get too emotional, and interruptions are terrible.
My son jest got 'accepted' into a Masters program in Epidemiology...i know what that means! He credited lil' ol' ME for pushing him! Jake is AWESUMMABLE!
Thank you Chase!! When the words come out like an angry stream You hear yourself say things you could never mean [original line is: When you cool down you find your mind] sung as When the heat goes down and you find your mind] You got a lot of words you've got to stand behind.

Bobby the greatest no2 out there ever. Not a bad no1 either.

Welcome aboard and thank you for adding such beauty to Melvin seals and JGB
Welcome, and thanks you for lending your talent to JGB!
Hey Cheryl, I offered you a cheese steak at the Ardmore Music hall around 2012, sorry about Shirley 😢
I LOVE YOU!
I miss all of you. Late 80s to 95 you were my only family
We're still out here cousin.
I promise the 70s were much better....
literally the greatest guitar solo of all time... Im responsible for at least 12,000 of these viewings.
Jackson F I’ve been listening to the Dead and Jer since ‘84. This is the greatest piece of music ever played!!
That's how I am with the He's Gone 89 Foxboro video 😅
I agree
With Jerry Garcia in 1977, it may not even be his greatest solo of the week.
Make that 12001. Miss em. Love Em. Peace & love to all.
Bullshit, I remember shows where those guys sounded like shit, and did not seem to care one bit.
tikiduck they were probably so wasted though hahaha
tikiduck and they played so many shows don't you think they got tired sometimes?
It's not that they didn't care tikiduck. Sometimes, the magic wasn't happening. Do you always perform your job to the best of your abilities?
When people are paying good money to see me? Yes, I do perform to the best of my abilities. These guys became so complacent because they knew the venue would fill up no matter what shit they dished out.
Some nights there was no passion whatsoever, they were just going through the motions and grabbing their money.

Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand
Says "don't you see?"
Gotta make it somehow
On the dreams you still believe
Don't give it up
You got an empty cup
Only love can fill
Only love can fill
Been walking all morning
Went walking all night
I can't see much difference
Between the dark and light
And I feel the wind
And I taste the rain
Never in my mind
To cause so much pain
From day to day
Just letting it ride
You get so far away
From how it feels inside
You can't let go
'Cause you're afraid to fall
But the day may come
When you can't feel at al
Good job. Powerful lyrics
🕊Yeshua is the Way the Truth the Light and the Life Yeshua Loves You
Satan loves you RUclips, for putting commercials in the middle of this masterpiece! I mean have you no love and light in your souls’ at all?
Preach!
It's super disrespectful
Ohh the ways we tourture ourselves
Literally!
One way to ruin a vibe
This and Mission In The Rain from the same album are Jerry in his perfect space. He loved and lived the most painful ballads. You can't sing them if you can't feel them.

John Brogan change is for the devil!!! Jk I think you made a solid point there.
Chase, I listen to this song all the time. My mom died this March 23rd out of the blue. My dad on April 23rd out of the blue. Fuck, I lost them both. I love and miss them a lot...They're gone and nothing's gonna bring 'em back...But memories. Comes a time when it's up for all of us peace, Chase.

spearfishmanofsteel I try, but the pain is still too fresh and real. No more mommy or daddy. It's a very lonely feeling.

100% agreed, it's simplicity is so moving and so dead on balls it's emotional ride from 3:33-4;48 perfection
Possibly the best Comes a Time Ever!! Jerry's singing and playing are just so emotional and soulful. It almost brings you totears.
So much fucking soul in every note.

"almost"??? ;)
best show, best comes a time, best BEST.

Thanks for reminding me that love is really the solution
When you really need a mellow moment in life.... This one fits the bill.
My god that solo brings me to tears sometimes ....so much emotion flowing through

Jerry is opened to the spheres on this one. Wow. This is what musical genius sounds like.
Another time. Another world. These waves from the past reach out to us who were born to be free. To be different. To be the true souls we are
jerry's solo in this particular version is one for the ages.... This song is just one of the most beautiful pieces of music to grace my ears. Thank you Jerry, Phil, Bob, Mickey, Billy, Keith and Donna.
BEST ever version of this song.
I just saw Furthur perform this song on Sunday at the Greek. I've never seen so many people crying all at once. I don't remember crying that hard since my brother died. What a beautiful song.
I’m dying in a funk of my losing my way. I’ll never find it again. I’m lost in the universe but I can hear the beautiful music

jesus christ this song gets better every thousand times i hear it..

The planets were certainly aligned on this night!
I just lost a friend and we all just lost Robert Hunter. I needed to listen to this. Thanks for posting. Simply beautiful.
My heart goes out bud I hope you are well
Sorry about your friend , I hope u find some peace in the music my friend ✌
Jerry and Donna sound really good together in this.
Jerry, sometimes you just channeled it exactly perfect.
Love the song 🥰 thank you for sharing your pictures. Blessings and gratitude 🙏
I put the headphones on this morning and thought, " oh. this must be either a studio version I've never heard, where they did some arrangement variations - or." then I hear jerry's voice, and I'm thinking, "is this some lost sober period I somehow forgot about?" That is why we play. For another perfect night onstage.:)
99.9% of bands never ever ever fucking ever have a moment like this....beautiful
Shit makes you feel alright....totally the way it was meant 2b that night and forever more ....as it is and was and always will be my b n s.
The beauty of the dead... going to see horrible shows just to catch that one show, that one moment when we all converged into love. Thanks for the experience
Living in Buffalo this and the Bertha are on constant rotation through the city. I want to manifest all the energy.
Grateful for the Jerry shows I was able to attend. Thanks for the share.
Chase, your video is stunningly beautiful, a perfect complement to this lovely, touching song. You make the most magnificent videos.
Hey thanks so much!! I am just glad to be able to help people enjoy the music
Chase, you dah man.... ♥️👍🏼

Music is the universal power of love and life. They can never suppress it
keith was such a great player
No kidding. He's amazing on this
Not a huge fan of the donna and keith days. Still love em and there the best . But they did have donna tell jerry they were gonna be part of the band. No invite nothing and they destroyed every hotel room they got. My man jerry just chilled he gave all he had and he def is always. The best.

Like an angry stream
You hear yourself say
Things you could never mean
When the heat cools down
And you find your mind
You got a lot of words

Truth
Been there
Gotta own it, & sometimes ❤️🩹 that is VERY expensive.
Lord have mercy..... faith, hope and love. ☠️🥀🌙
This was my 2nd Dead show and it will always be etched in my mind.
The wisdom in this song is more profound than anything found in the Bible
knowing where Robert Hunter liked to pull inspiration from this song probably came from the Bible
They're a band beyond description
Like Jehovah's favorite choir 🎵
Miss you K. This one gets me every time.
I'm sorry but I don't hate Donna.
Big Love for Donna here too!
Anybody that hates Donna....come on...wtf...
She had her ups and downs like the rest of the band.
I like her voice on Rain. :) she can sing. It's just that monitors were proper shit back then for huge set up, so I heard
Oh hell.....I don't even mind when Donna Jean is a having maybe a slightly off night. This is the best line up of the Dead. Wouldn't trade Donna Jean for anybody.
So beautiful. Thanks...
Man, I loved the slide show with the jam. Perfect mix of beautiful song and presentation.
I was not much of a Dead Head but saw them once - iirc at the Filmore in SF~1972 - was stoned and got fixated on the Drummer drumming, what a show!
+joseph peden I can still see him! and that's all I remember about it
Sounds awesome too bad i wasn't alive to seem them
My all time favorite Grateful Dead mellow jam tune, which I cry too every single time thinking about my Dad's death
The transition at the end is an example of the rare genius of this band!
The show after the show... That entire year is just stellar. Love!
If Chase had a dollar for every time I've watched this...
j plant I agree brother. This version of this song has helped me through some very dark and hopeless times.
It's tunes like these that Jerry brings a tear or tremble to my face... only love can fill...
That repeated verse "only love can fill" is at the core of the tune. Really moving.
I'm still moving
Idk who that is but what ever gets new listeners into the Dead is awesome! Check out more of their stuff.
This is such an incredible version of this tune! Man, these guys really played well in Spring '77!
This is one of the most beautiful things that I've ever heard. It's about the most heartfelt renditions of this song. I can't listen to this around other people because I get too emotional, and interruptions are terrible.
What a song, and what a show!
My son jest got 'accepted' into a Masters program in Epidemiology...i know what that means! He credited lil' ol' ME for pushing him! Jake is AWESUMMABLE!
I'm sad when I hear this because I met Jerry backstage in Santa Barbara in 1978, and now he's gone...only memories and music now
Kind of a forgotten Dead tune. What a band! 😊
Thank you Grateful Dead, fuckin love you guys. Don't give it up, ya got an empty cup ONLY LOVE can fill. May it be again.. ❤️⚡️💙
Jerry's guided tour through hell ending in heaven !
I forgot this song existed 🤦🏻♂️Holy G-d did I ever need to hear this right now .
One of my all time favorites - this solo has so much texture and energy. The band is just on!
We all love eachother as hippies grew up together ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹⚡️☠️💀💥🕊️🪽😇😍🥰😘🔥🥲😢😔so sad without Jerry !
wow amazing song
Thank you Chase!!
When the words come out like an angry stream
You hear yourself say things you could never mean
[original line is: When you cool down you find your mind]
sung as When the heat goes down and you find your mind]
You got a lot of words you've got to stand behind.
1977 was one of their best years.
A highlight of highlights
77 was hot
May 77 was incendiary
Nice version.
gotta make it somehow all the dreams you still believe- LOVE~LOVE ~LOVE
