I had a severe stroke and couldn't hear music in my head anymore. I started playing my Grateful Dead and Jerry albums non stop, listening to it in my Sirius in my car. I finally hear the music again. Thank you Jerry for 15 of the best years of my life watching you play.
Watch the movie the music never stopped. About some kid who leaves home to follow the dead then basically gets found as a strungout hippie who lost his mind and can’t gain new memories. Takes place back in the day. Then he starts doing music therapy. The kid is a huge deadhead. Great movie
I am a old man and I love the Beatles, Jerry makes me cry every time I watch him do this song ,it is truly beautiful and music is one of the most important things in my life.
The more I listen, the more convinced I am that this man possessed a magic power. I never saw them as a youth and dismissed them as a hilly billy band. But now old and wiser, I see that I was wrong and that Jerry had that what nobody else has or had since and I hang my head in shame for not going to his concerts when I could. My contribution is to try to inspire others to see what I didnt see. Amen.
I have been listening to the Grateful Dead for over 30 years. I'm fortunate enough to have seen Jerry in concert many time (even with the Dead at Broadway). And I sat in my listening room, streaming this, alone, saying aloud, "OMG, he's so good", over and over. It *NEVER* gets old.
@@strings53notlob50 fair enough lol. Just thought Id suggest in case you hadn't. I prefer the March one lol. Probably because Im more partial to that entire show. Ive never listened to this whole show. Take care my man!✌
1980 was a remarkable year for Jerry Garcia - another triumphant trip around the sun absolutely playing his heart out with the Grateful Dead, the Reckonings held at The Warfield and Radio City Music Hall , and then there's the winter 1980 JGB tour, one of the finest I know of. A very special time.
From your pfp you look to be around my age (I'm 26) it always makes me happy to see people my age into amazing bands like the dead. It's how the music never stops!
I noticed that, too. He was clearly reaching to give appreciation to uniqueness in style to George along with his own take on what it all meant inside. Just brilliant or so special...
I was there for both the early and late shows and this tune - the encore for the late show - was without a doubt the hottest song of the night! Thanks to Music Vault for posting it!
Yes I was there , breathing the same air as Jerry one night at the New Jersey shore , when Asbury Park was still all dilapidated. What a great old venue, saw Phil Lesh there last year ! You are part of everything Dear Prudence look around round round
I know I should be more sophisticated, & not be so amazed at a simple video-tape (grainy & dark as it is) but to me it's a wonderful magic time machine. & although my calendar says its 1/29/2016, it's really 7/26/1980!!! at least for 12:36 seconds. Miss Jerry, & really miss John Kahn too. He was an amazing player & the perfect fit for Jerry, as well as selecting & arranging much of the material. There may have still been a JGB without him, but it would not have been nearly as great, or held together as long.
daskitten1 Why be sophisticated when there is dark grainy beauty, just like this? There is no need to try better one's self if perfection has been met. Good thing Jerry didn't know he had already reached perfection. We would have lost him sooner than we did.
I think most people take the 'liveness' aspect of recordings for granted. Whereas when I listen to this, or The Allmans at the Fillmore for example, or Janis live, it never fails amaze me that the experience is like seeing light from a distant galaxy which exploded eons ago. It's a historic moment which we can relive (without necessarily having been there in the first place) over & over again, by simply pressing play. & then when you add video, like we have here with The JG-Band, the experience is that much more mindblowing, be it grainy or crystal clear.
He'd be 78 yrs old today....there must have been something magical in the waters back in the 1940's because that era gave birth to so many great musicians.
Pretty darn swell! Excellent solo in the mid-section. Wow-he never ceases to amaze me, even after all these years. Thank goodness we have such an abundance of recordings.
This was man who not only did he play the best music...but he shared his Love vibe too...Thanks to you guys for your terrific comments...Smiles Rob Grateful...
So true. When Jerry was in-groove---musically verbally, like he was here, nothing like it. This one is as good as it gets, imo. Being in that space is like being in heaven.
Beginning of this solo (6:00) is straight up pure and full of feels... just a polished off soul with some dents here and there from the road. One of my favorites from him.
ai'll save you the confusion. Do THINK UP when you pass away one very happy day in the far far far far future. that will help you tremendously. but you need to kinda trust when you see Garcia that you are seeing God. I hope you understand. He wore simple clothes and the same basic appearance to make that easy for you to remember who he is. Jerry Garcia is God. yeah yeah yeah we all modify slightly when we visit this world but you'll see. follow him. he leads the dead
Yeah I feel lucky that I was able to see this live so many times over the past years. This version almost brings tears to your eyes. Like every time I here it. So much feeling. God Bless Jerry..
First time I heard this by them was a few weeks ago at Phil and friends never had heard this song before and it was like magic when they started singing look around and just seeing all the spinners and people dancing it was just true bliss nothing like a dead show
Sometimes I get so effing sad that Jerry's gone whenever I listen to him sometimes when I listen to him my heart opens and I have a love for all people even the ones that get on my nerves
Ty for posting this, fab video/song! Isn't it funny when jerry/the dead cover a song, it is so good that it seems they wrote it! Very few others could do that, (ie. hendrix srv)
Nobody ever covered or interpreted Dylan like Jerry Garcia. Bob Dylan would agree wholeheartedly w/ that statement, I guarantee it. Check out a 1990 JGB version of "Senor", if you can locate one, just for starters...
can you say Ron Tutt? John Kahn... Mr. Jerry Garcia. Can you say TIGER? My my, hey hey, I love rock and roll.... LOL! Saw these folks a few times. Blessing it was.

This and 3 Little birds. For me
And Blackbird for me here
Jerry was so great that the crowd would cheer at the beginning of his solo. It's like stepping into a warm bath of sound.
They would cheer because the rest of the song was a little well, it can’t compare to the original. The solo is almost always interesting though.
The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so were you Jerry 😇
sounds about right!

Same here, brother!

Glad you’re here
ok, I'm a Jerry diehard fan ... but Jeezus, you look at some of this stuff, and you just know, he is one of the greatest of all time
Yes he is ,miss you Jerry
Listening in 2023 today! 💕
Jerry had "it" is all i can say. Not sure the right words for "it" but he was unmatched then and now. Prolific guitarist, singer and song writer.
Right on. Well said

Jesus....Jerry's solo here is so thoughtfully slow and utterly beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous solo!
Top notch version. Maybe my favorite. Jerry loved this song.
The most haunting cover version of a song I have ever heard.
I have to cry because it's so beautiful

I just said I prefer the Dear Prudence from March of 1980 lol. I like the vocals better but this keys solo is a stomper. 🤣✌
John Kahn on bass, is amazing.
He was a true brother with Jerome, until the end, and then some.
Thanks boys!
Jerry gave us no choice but to feel it in our bones, goose bumps man !!! Let me see you smile again !!!!!
Captain Trips will live forever!
That's the truth ❤
Absolutely love the soul and funky guitar riffs he adds to covers. Long live Jerry Garcia!! 💘

Heaven is real.. right in this song!
It is rare that a cover is better than the original but this is a prime example
Hey hey hey hey slow down there...don't get crazy.
Jerry is so Jerry right here. Classic , man do I miss him. Thanks for all the good times boss!!
Damn. That was a good one. That little guitar blast right at the end capped it.

I still miss jerry.
Same venue that I saw the doors in 1967, crummy place to have to play ,but that's NJ for you. This take is timeless.
After a few viewings I am convinced that this indeed the best of the Master. Let's have some snaps for this genius please!
