that's exactly what my boyfriend and i said to each other in the movie. we were the only people in the theatre who genuinely laughed and thought that line was funny.
You know its a really good work when you forget about the actors... just focus on the character. And believe it real. Cant say that for 90% of movies that came in the recent years .
The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. ... The film, which acts as an origin story for the Joker, is set in 1981 and follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City.
“I just hope my death makes more cents [sense] than my life” During the interview with Murray, Joker saw this sentence in his journal. I think this was his last breaking point. Initially, his "joke" was supposed to be his suicide, but after reading the quote he realised that he doesn't want his death to be the way he felt about his life - senseless. That results in his manifesto and the killing of Murray. In my opinion, Joker would have just killed himself in the studio if he hadn't seen that sentence again. So I think that's one of the most important moments in the film.
I was recently talking to a friend of mine after we have left the cinema watching the movie, how comic book movies never get nominated for an Oscar. He was throwing in that Heath Ledger has won one after his performance in the Dark Knight. Then we both realised that he has won it after his death went public. We linked and interpreted the sentence Joker carried around in his diary as an subtle critic towards the Oscar ceremony, that actors starring in these kind of movies only will get noticed if they die, attaching a high price to their performance getting the fame they deserve.
I also like how the mis spelling of sense to cents plays on the idea that Arthur's life is worthless and isn't worth cents. He feels that his death, especially a high profile suicide on TV would get people talking about the problems in Gotham and would therefore be worth more than living.
@@jeffringoldwin9993 It was after Arthur killed Murray. He's riding around in the back of a cop car. Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight was riding around in the back of a cop car after he escaped from Gotham jail.

@@joseaguirre3814 prolly because it starts the "birth" of a character. Like when Arthur was getting jumped in the alleyway it was stirring up his transformation to be Joker and to mirror that with Bruce's parents dying; it marks the beginning of him turning to Batman in the future. Probably lol
It’s not, the joker was meant to be heard not looked through. plus everything he made up in the movie had a light hearted feel to it people saying it’s all made up is just a lazy theory
Antonio Abbandonato this is what pisses me off, I watched so many videos about this movie, the director said we could interpret it anyway we want but everyone saying he made it up there a few ways to look at the movie
I agree. if it's all in Arthur's head, then it reminds me of when I was in primary school and had to write a narrative essay, in my case in norwegian. And ending the essay with: "Then he woke up". It's not good enough for me.
I would like to think that him in the Asylum at the end of the movie was a time jump to the future of him reflecting on events that actually took place in his life and not just a story he made up
I'd like to hope that I didnt waste my time watching a theoretic view of what could've happen. I rather think that hes remembering everything his way and he embellished some things in his own way.
@Samuel Beavers i say "madness" b/c in the movie it was something he couldnt control but affected him presumably from the abuse he endured as a child, which ultimately led him to kill his mom.
The only reason I don't like the "it was ALL in his head" theory is that they specifically highlight what was a delusion. When they do the Fight Club reveal that Sophie was never really there in those scenes; it draws a line that implies... "we're going to tell you what scenes didn't really happen the way we showed you the first time." Why would his fantasy include an elaborate Inception-style delusion within a delusion.
I don't agree, it's a cool ending even if not satisfying in the traditional sense This is the best way to portrait such a delusional mind as well as keeping his background still open and ambiguous You cant just simply put a story on the joker, the cool thing is always speculate as to why the joker is the way he is...explore every possibility always
Yeah I noticed that too... its always 11:10 or 11;11 as someone else mentioned. Not sure if thats significant. Every single advertising for watches always shows the time at 10:10? So many it was something like that?
This movie was a complete masterpiece. From the cinematography, the writing, and the phenomenal acting from Joaquin Phoenix. Todd Phillips, kudos for your work sir.
Joker actually looked a bit happy making the children laugh. He even said he loved his job. It’s little things like that that make the movie good. Even though he’s a crazy maniac.
The forced finger smile has a lot of meaning. The first thing I thought of was a tribute to Heath Ledger. I saw in a behind the scenes interview with a make up artist that he would scrunch his face while having full make up on to give texture. Phoenix does that here as well
Method acting is a range of training and rehearsal techniques that seek to encourage sincere and emotionally expressive performances, as formulated by a number of different theatre practitioners.
Also notice that almost all of Joker’s murders cut ties with his old life or his previous self His mother His best friend His idol (murray) His imaginary girlfriend And only then after cutting all ties to Arthur, he fully becomes the joker
I love how this movie just raise awareness for mental illness, I don't know if it's on purpose but unconsciously I feel like mental illness should really be notice by the whole community. :/
I loved it too, because the movie felt like it was a big punch to the face about how mental illness is treated nowadays, because some people still don't seem to get it.
As someone who has a rage disorder and laughs uncontrollably sometimes (usually at the worst possible times) I was glad to see a movie shed light on shit I went through for 14 years. Sadly he never got a lot of help and it led to his demise. I did and I have no more issues.
I don’t think you had the midget and how Arthur said he was the only one who was nice to him. Joker had a sidekick called gags gagsworthy who was a midget clown.
It was so much better a second time for some reason. Like I was on the fence about how I felt about it but the second time it was like I experienced a masterpiece. Idk
I'm about to see it with my brother today after seeing it just last night with my other half and it's stuck with me. I have more of an urge to see it now that I intinally did.
i’m not sure if anyone else noticed but when arthur gets jumped by the kids in the beginning of the movie, while he is laying on the ground, fluid comes out of his flower seeming to be a reference to the acid flower that the joker is sometimes known to have
Joaquin's involuntary laughter is unsettling and makes me feel bad for him since he rly isn't okay. that Awakening to the Clown Riot is so Beautiful made him the Hero Gotham really Needed. it's great that it's kind of it's own thing a rarity these days. I would Love to see more of Phoenix as the Joker if he ever wanted to again.
@thenormalguy101 I know exactly what you mean, he laughed once he realized how frightened Gary was standing in the corner. I noticed it too! It was awesome. Seemed like he was overcoming his illness at that point honestly
When I saw the moment that Gary (Midget) couldnt reach the door lock, I honestly thought he was fucked and Arthurs mercy was a trick but no! He legit got away and we never heard frlm him again. It was an amazing and tense scene
So really the joker brought Bruce down to his level and that’s why Bruce does everything in his well being to not become joker. Brilliant just brilliant
Technically he *killed* the fist two bros and *murdered* the third. Most people find that distinction important. Assuming the third didn't simply bleed out on those stairs, because that revolver seemed to have about eight bullets. Executing the third could have been fantasy.
How about how the sign at the beginning of the movie represents the whole message of the film "everything must go" and is literally smashed into his head
This movie hit me to my core,I have a decent amount of anxiety and my god did this movie push it to the edge. My first viewing of the film had me heading to the bathroom to calm myself down,I came back and finish the film which was so worth it. Joaquin Phoenix is absolutely perfect in this role as the joker,I couldn't have been more pleased with how well he transformed into the joker. I've seen it twice already and I plan on seeing it at least two more times. 10/10 a TRUE masterpiece.
Arthur picking up the studio camera for a close shot immediately reminded me of the same scene in Dark Knight. Also, the final dance on the ambulance. "You ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?".
@@JamieSwitzer ledger is the joker, arthur fleck doesnt seem to be the same joker that becomes batman nemesis, the age gap is huge, and the actual joker is not much older than batman
omi89 the age gap isn’t that huge... by the time Batman is 20 (when he returns to Gotham) this joker would be around 50. I think that’s a really good age for the joker
I have a theory.when arthur is laughing to himself at the end and then theres a scene where bruce is standing over his dead parents.maybe arthur has already fought batman and discovered he’s bruce wayne and the reason he’s laughing to himself is cause he knows he’s actions (the riots) caused the death of he’s parents therefore he’s responsible for creating batman, and thats why he’s laughing.

'Send in the Clowns' isn't actually about clowns so this means that one of the character's in Joker knows all of the words to a song and not what the plot of the musical it's from is.
Quick correction because I know you love it; it’s not Arthur’s laugh that makes De Niro single him out in the fantasy, it’s the fact that he shouts “I love you”

The film was brilliant! And though I can see how many might interpret the final scene as saying that the whole rest of the film was a fantasy I personally don't think it was. I think it's much later in his life as he looks older in the final scene, and also we know Joker was constantly in and out of Arkham Asylum so I feel it is playing into that narrative. What ever the actual answer is the performances and film were amazing with some beautiful cinematography throughout. For sure one of my favourite joker stories that I've seen.

Thewhitequeen0 I know that’s what I’m referring to. I’d love to hear from him if there was a meaning behind both alley shots being shot the same way.
Yes yes definitely !

I didn’t understand that line.
Joseph Doyle he was talking about the wall street guys on the subway, they were singing while they assaulted him
What does that line mean? Forgive me Eglidh is not my first language.
I don’t think I’d like if the whole movie was just in Arthur’s head. I don’t know.
It’s not, the joker was meant to be heard not looked through. plus everything he made up in the movie had a light hearted feel to it people saying it’s all made up is just a lazy theory
@@extremenatureandfriends so it's all real ? I hope so
Antonio Abbandonato this is what pisses me off, I watched so many videos about this movie, the director said we could interpret it anyway we want but everyone saying he made it up there a few ways to look at the movie
@@extremenatureandfriends it is what it is, like it or not.
I agree. if it's all in Arthur's head, then it reminds me of when I was in primary school and had to write a narrative essay, in my case in norwegian. And ending the essay with: "Then he woke up".
It's not good enough for me.
I would like to think that him in the Asylum at the end of the movie was a time jump to the future of him reflecting on events that actually took place in his life and not just a story he made up
TheMiddlePoint both
But if he did previously do all those things, wouldn’t he be in Jail, and not an Asylum
If he made up the whole thing,. it makes me feel like I just wasted my time watching the movie.
I agree. Joaquin has said he’s not a fan of trilogys but i really do hope he makes an exception for the joker
I'd like to hope that I didnt waste my time watching a theoretic view of what could've happen. I rather think that hes remembering everything his way and he embellished some things in his own way.

I like how they gave him a "calling card" that explains his madness. Reminds me of Dark Knights Joker
@Samuel Beavers i say "madness" b/c in the movie it was something he couldnt control but affected him presumably from the abuse he endured as a child, which ultimately led him to kill his mom.
Also in the Dark Knight at the end when the Joker is hurled from the balcony he is laughing to his presumed death. It reminded me alot of that scene.
It remind me of Persona 5
@Samuel Beavers I'd say the inability to distinguish imagination from reality would count as madness
Thats a stretch. It's not even a calling card.
When he said “ you wouldn’t get it” was more of him accepting himself and nobody’s going to accept him the way he was before
if this doesn't get oscar, system is rigged.
devilorchard 👍 there were Oscar buzz headlines about the lead from "Hustlers" .... 😶
devilorchard society doesnt like being called out so idk
Joaquin Phoenix deserves the Oscar for the Best Actor
Even if it does, system is still rigged by a few who think they get to dictate what's good and what's not.
If u think about it the movie isn't that different or bokd. But Phoenix should definitely get an oscar for this but not the movie as a whole
The only reason I don't like the "it was ALL in his head" theory is that they specifically highlight what was a delusion.
When they do the Fight Club reveal that Sophie was never really there in those scenes; it draws a line that implies... "we're going to tell you what scenes didn't really happen the way we showed you the first time."
Why would his fantasy include an elaborate Inception-style delusion within a delusion.
Because he's so shattered?
I'm genuinely hoping this whole movie isn't basically a glorified dream sequence.
@@thewatcher8343 agreed, it would be to obvious
The, "it was ALL in his head" is the laziest film theory, ever. It means, "I don't have to think at ALL."
I don't agree, it's a cool ending even if not satisfying in the traditional sense
This is the best way to portrait such a delusional mind as well as keeping his background still open and ambiguous
You cant just simply put a story on the joker, the cool thing is always speculate as to why the joker is the way he is...explore every possibility always
My favorite part of the ending was Joker saying "Want to hear a joke?" and then the camera switches to the alley with Bruce and his dead parents. GOLD
That was sad with Bruce
I’m sure that’s not how the scene went
Joaquin Nario thats not how it went
He said “just thought of a joke” and then it switched to the alley, but he said “you wouldn’t get it”

My friend was doing the exact same thing :D
TDB Squad I did the same lmaoo
I thought he was going to slam his head in the door.
I was wishing the opposite lol
U missed one thing, throughout the whole movie whenever there is a clock in the background of the scene it always shows the same time.
Omg..that implies that the whole movie is in Author's head
Yeah I noticed that too... its always 11:10 or 11;11 as someone else mentioned. Not sure if thats significant. Every single advertising for watches always shows the time at 10:10? So many it was something like that?
The clock is actually a smiling symbol
Actually there is one clock final scene where it is different
I never noticed this ... So the whole movie is a whole daydream and the ending is reality because time is ticking.
I was so happy when he shot those guys on the train

Joker actually looked a bit happy making the children laugh. He even said he loved his job. It’s little things like that that make the movie good. Even though he’s a crazy maniac.
The funniest part was when he raised his finger over his mouth saying “shhhh” hahaha

lmao 'you wouldnt get it', underrated comment
The forced finger smile has a lot of meaning. The first thing I thought of was a tribute to Heath Ledger. I saw in a behind the scenes interview with a make up artist that he would scrunch his face while having full make up on to give texture. Phoenix does that here as well
"Went super method for this role", didn't go method at all and has stated such in nearly every interview
It's extreme method acting is part of JP's mythos now
I apologize for my ignorance but, what is a method actor?
Method acting is a range of training and rehearsal techniques that seek to encourage sincere and emotionally expressive performances, as formulated by a number of different theatre practitioners.
That makes him even more badass if that's the case
@@Muningning1025 Yeah he just switched it on when the cameras rolled because he's that good

Wow I didn't even see it that way.
Also notice that almost all of Joker’s murders cut ties with his old life or his previous self
His mother
His best friend
His idol (murray)
His imaginary girlfriend
And only then after cutting all ties to Arthur, he fully becomes the joker
Anthony Salerno well its never confirmed but implied
Dutch Van der linde when did they imply it?
Good point..
Ruben Sidhu people say you can hear sirens in the next scene and that’s where they implied it but I’m not sure that’s enough

I love how this movie just raise awareness for mental illness, I don't know if it's on purpose but unconsciously I feel like mental illness should really be notice by the whole community. :/
You mean if you are raised by a crazy person you become crazy? Turns out he was normal all along trying to cope in an insane environment.
Yup
I know people in real life who love this movie, but couldn't care less about real mentally ill loners and even mock them. Don't get your hopes up.
I don’t think you had the midget and how Arthur said he was the only one who was nice to him. Joker had a sidekick called gags gagsworthy who was a midget clown.
"That's how it starts.. The fever.. The rage, The feeling of powerlessness.
That turns good men.... CRUEL"
This movie rlly showed the causes of society lookin down on the “not normal” ppl

Joker sparing the midget is a great example of expectations being subverted in a good way
When I saw the moment that Gary (Midget) couldnt reach the door lock, I honestly thought he was fucked and Arthurs mercy was a trick but no! He legit got away and we never heard frlm him again. It was an amazing and tense scene
The Joker's mind is so screwed up that he eventually forgets his own past.
I totally thought Thomas Wayne falsified the records
Thomas Wayne knew the mother was mentally unstable....I doubt he'll let his son, even if it's a product of adultery, be sexually abused

omi89 the age gap isn’t that huge... by the time Batman is 20 (when he returns to Gotham) this joker would be around 50.
