Honestly I feel so bad for Jered Leto, if you see interviews of Leto before he began his role you can tell his idea of joker was definitely what Joaquin Phoenix’s joker ended up being. You could see the sparkle in his eyes as he talked about his role. I genuinely believe he would have been a wonderful joker if they hadn’t made him an e-boy.
Leto's still a ridiculously talented actor. But boy oh boy did the studio take it in the wrong direction. Sure, have him be a crime boss. But... not like that. He had the look and wardrobe of a mumble rapper, and drove a brightly coloured car with underglow. Why, Warner Brothers? Whose brilliant idea was that?
@@juliantaffa4089 I think it's also bc the Suicide Squad happens in a different universe for DC comics. They play with that idea in comics. He had a similar look to the comic book version, yes the costume could have been calmed down, but I think it also is a way to see the difference between Jokers and placing him in the Suicide Squad Joker role.
How dare you. Do you understand the true dedication, studying, effort, blood sweat and tears that goes into making a truly good, and believable porn parody?!
R.I.P Heath Ledger. The best acting preformance ive ever seen, maybe ever will see. Thank you Ledger. Some say he gave his life to the role, either way, you and your work will NEVER be forgotten.
To me is more like this: Jack Nicholson : The Histrionic (Jack Napier was the gangster, once he becomes The Joker, he gets rid of the mob, and was no gangster anymore) Heath Ledger : The fascist terrorist (He talks about chaos and anarchy, but wanted a whole city to do his Will, that´s not Anarchy, those are more the methods of a dictator) Joaquin Phoenix : The true Nihilistic Anarchist. Cameron Monaghan : The sociopath (Jerome Valeska) and The Psychopath (Jeremiah Valeska) Jared Leto: A transgender Catwoman on meth in a weird multiverse.
Cameron Monaghan’s performance in Gotham was seriously underrated to me especially for how young he was. He certainly seemed like he could really capture a great joker in the future. It really seemed like he was inspired from ledger’s joker.
Yesss. The only reason he isn’t more well known is because they weren’t given the rights to the joker. But he deserves to be known! Definitely too underrated
@@antonio.w.c Hamlet is a role that is considered so hard and intricate that only the most talented actors can take it on. Being able to play Hamlet demonstrates some serious acting skill while flirting with insanity.
@Blackpilled Saint It's the Shakespeare play that Lion King is based off on. It was arguably Shakespeare's best work. It's about a shattered son acting upon the request of his late father to revenge the latter's murder. If you want to watch it, I recommend the David Tennant version. Benedict Cumberbatch has also played Hamlet in a more recent rendering but I haven't seen that one yet (it's on the to-do list).
puffinsunday muffin Leo would be a great Joker. His style of acting is borderline psychologically thrilling & his improv would suit such a role I think.
The joker isn’t a cursed role. It’s an epic role that over-scared the viewers into believing that you can only play one by being one. People need to study the definition of “acting” more.
Method acting is about channeling.. "Spirits", it's very real and dark, actors after that really either go to therapy for the rest of their lives, or they don't remember who they are, and stay in character off set as well, heath ledger is a perfect example, their are bjnch of videos talking about his METHOD, he locked hilself in a hotel for four months only dleepi'g two hours a day, meditating on very disturbing images, doung a ritual.
It is one of the reasons why Method acting gets criticized and is generally considered unsafe for actors. Most actors do not know how to turn the intent off once they are done working on a production.
Jared leto shouldve kept making music and keep away from things he doesnt know anything about. i wouldn't go to a mechanic if i wanted a cake. His dream of being an actor should've stayed as a dream an nothing else. Now his music AND acting is pathetic. i wouldn't be surprised if he overdosed too...
I liked only one of his tattoos, the hand mouth. It would kind of make sense. The joker is known to put on this smile, look insane to everyone, even though he does have his serious moments they always go back to his insane smile. I'm pretty sure if the Joker got to much into the seriousness he would put the hand over his mouth and try to pretend he's still the same giggling man we all perceive him as.
Agree. Jared Leto is actually a good actor. Hell the dude even won an oscar already. But when a movie is trash not even the world's best actors could save it.
I can't stand it when people give hate to Jared Leto for playing a bad Joker, trust me, I hate his version of Joker as much as the next guy but he did what he could, it's the director's fault for making it bad. Edit: Ok well after hearing that Leto tried to get the Joker movie cancelled because he wouldn't be playing the Joker, that's kinda messed up.
You mentioned that “Joker” has mixed reviews: some critics absolutely loved it, going so far as to call it “a masterpiece”; while others have called “Joker” a complete failure and slammed the film. But.... there’s one thing that all critics have unanimously agreed on: **Phoenix was unbelievable**. Even critics that hated the film agree on that one aspect, Phoenix was made for the role.
Those who decided to bash it were all riding the media made hate wave. There can be no other reason to justify that a film that received raving reviews and grabbed the top prize at Venice, suddenly became a punch bag weeks later. I'm an India and lemme tell you, I found atleast 5 critics here borederline bashing the movie with the same ' Glorifaction' excuse. Those idiots were also riding the bandwagon of sjws and were rightly put n place by a local director (whose film was bashed in same way for being too violent barely months ago but still grossed tons of money as the viewers loved it). He called those critics as Parasites who injure movies more than they help. He said that an critic who is far more interested in social chapter of a movie than the 22 different types of Crafts that make a movie, is not a critic.
Steezy Mac totally agree that audience score is a better reflection of movie quality. I usually ignore the critic score when I check Rotten Tomatoes, critics have so much content to evaluate and use to judge a film based on when really all I need to know to decide whether to see it is, “did you enjoy the film, yes or no?”.
Most of the bad reviews from both critics and "audience" (i use that term sparingly since a lot of people just listen to what the media says without watching the film and deciding for themselves whether it was bad) come from the media that was branding it with a political affiliation; calling it a movie for "Incels" and "Alt-right" radicals. That is bullshit. I miss the days when movies could make statements or provoke thought without being branded with a political ideology or put with a group of people to be written off. If the movie wasn't boring, provoked thought and was generally well made, then it was a good movie. Critics, audiences and social media personalities are not good sources for whether something is good or bad. The only truly reliable way to know if it is good or bad is to watch it for 15 some odd bucks.
The Joker isn’t just a character. He is a mirror to the darkness that lies underneath all humanity. That’s why the smiles and clown like facade is so in contrast to the real world. Greatest villain in literature history.

His look was bad, but he had to commit his acting to that look. I only think his acting was terrible because of the Joker they made for him. Honestly how do you even behave dressed like that?
His acting was actually pretty immersive. The outfit was less than ideal for the joker's original and ideal but still not too bad. Don't really get why everyone complains about it. Seemed to fit the theme of suicide squad in my opinion.
Amethyst Moonshadow Because the Joker doesn't seem like the person who would go to a tatoo artist and say "hey can you write "Damaged" on my forehead in times new roman or something like that?". He doesn't look like a deranged psycho, he doesn't look like a crime lord, he doesn't look like a insane caricature of a clown, he doesn't look like anything the Joker is usually associated with. He looks like a gangsta. Maybe a crazy one, sure, but not The Joker. Could be someome that idolizes him or something like that, for sure, but most Joker incarnations don't even think they are crazy, even less so "damaged". Mouth hand was good tho.
I like Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker, but I think most of the Joker's bring something special to the role. Heath portrayed the chaotic destructive force of insanity that the Joker can embody. Jack Nicholson embodied the more classic criminal mastermind Joker Joaquin Phoenix embodied the more humane side and the fall into Darkness that likely leads to the creation of the Joker persona. Heath and Joaquin both portray Joker well as the unreliable narrator that likes to make his origin multiple choice as well. Cameron Monaghan did a great job portraying three versions of the Joker. But he had a lot more screentime to refine the character.

If I were to rank the actors I would go with 1. Joaquin Phoenix: I know I know Ledger is everyone's favorite but watching the physical brutality Joaquin put himself through when he was preparing is just astonishing, the body language throughout the film is a treat to watch and having him on screen the whole time really helped 2. Heath Ledger: One of the greatest performances in film history, Heath did incredible and nailed the mental side of things where as Joaquin nailed the physical side 3. Jack Nicholson: Brought a proper dark side to the character as well as seriousness which forever shaped the future of the Joker as a film character 4. Mark Hamil: I know he only did voice acting but in terms of an animated Joker no one does it quite like Hamil but I'm also glad it stays as just a vocal preformance because I don't think he would do physically very well for the character 5. Jared Leto: Only thing saving this preformance is the fact that Jared took the role seriously and the movie took the character seriously 6. Cesar Romero: I'm sorry but this preformance was beyond ridiculous and can't be looked at seriously
Jack nicholson's joker makes me wanna join the party with him. Heath Ledger's joker makes me wanna stay away from him. Joaquin Phoenix's joker makes me wanna help him. And Jared Letto's joker makes me wanna slap him

Jack Nicholson like they said just let himself have fun with the role. Heath ledger showed his great acting ability. Jared Leto went a different way to not follow Ledger and got screwed by how much hit the floor. Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, and David Bowie would have been a very interesting joker. Look at the way Joaquin took on the role, he gave us a very real performance on the fact that society can make you go mad and get you to your breaking point. And Heath Ledger was on a whole other level. I think what makes joker one of the best characters of all time is that whoever is portraying him, can make him unique. He’s such a flexible character so it’s cool to see how writers and actors will break the boundaries for him. I’d rather see Jared Leto portraying his version of the joker than see him try to copy Heath or anyone else for that matter. The joker is probably one of the most diverse characters in the history of cinema
To be a good Joker, I feel you need to be a really good comedian. As you said, each actor can make up their own, unique version of Joker simply by playing as themselves. Restricting a comedian to a certain theme doesn't give them much wiggle room creatively, and the more restrictions, the more carbon-copy it's gonna seem.
He was a child prodigy actor just like his brother, i´m sure he worked hard but that doesn't mean he´s going to let a role get into his head after finish it

The reason why Phoenix didn't go further into manic depression as a result from shooting the Joker film was because Todd Phillips, the director, was cracking jokes and goofing off with him behind the scenes. He brought levity on set when the cameras weren't rolling. Joaquin had fun making a movie. The last time I can recall he had fun making a movie was when he was doing that mockumentary about him transitioning into being a rapper.

I had the privilege of being in a scene with Joaquin Phoenix in Joker. I learned a lot of the craft of acting by watching him in action. His focus was incredible.
True. People normally pay good attention to comic book character actors, but joker specifically turns it up a notch. There's so much to process from the character
Honestly if Jared's Joker had any depth he wouldn't have had to have heard about how bad it is. It was a bad performance no matter who played the role before or since.

Yeah I didn't really like the show so much. I felt it was a stretch to imagine that all these characters unknowingly interacted with each other so much earlier that required too much suspension of disbelief.
I don't think he also chose the way he was to look with the tattoos. Who decides this are the art team and not the actor...! They are just trying to use him to compare witth Joaquim Phoenix to avoid touching Heath Ledger's version, because a lot more people watched The Dark Knight than Suicide Squad (not to say Jared Leto didn't have a chance when they didn't make much scenes with him and cut so many to leave just some few little shots on the movie.
@@OpportunisticHunter I think you are partially right but in a lot of movies, especially with high profile actors like jared leto, there is more freedom given to how the character looks given that their performance is affected by how they act and vice versa. In lower profile films with lower profile actors, you might be right, but when you have a bigger name to put on the poster, naturally they are a bigger element and can sometimes make or break a movie. So it makes sense to cater to them a bit more. But there is a lot of elements to this kind of decision though with a key factor being the contract negotiated and how the actor's manager worked the details in. Another big factor in this decision is the director/producer since the director can also leverage their infamy against the actor depending on the directors personality. I agree to an extent with what you are saying, but I just wanted to add on since it is not so cut and dry.

That's one of the more original comments I have heard about Jared's portrayal. I just pictured a lot of those young rappers who dye their hair and get their whole face tattooed. It could have been what they were going for. However, if so, I would say they misread their audience.

I think he just wasn’t right for the role :/ He tried at least
I actually like Jared Leto as the joker. But I like the Harley Quinn and joker love story more. They should not cancel Jared Leto's joker yet

Interesting how the Joker role has become this generation's Hamlet.
@321Ian123 i think leo can take on the role. just my thoughts though
puffinsunday muffin Leo would be a great Joker. His style of acting is borderline psychologically thrilling & his improv would suit such a role I think.
Damn the actors meltdown to pretend to be him an not even near the comics a part this
The joker isn’t a cursed role. It’s an epic role that over-scared the viewers into believing that you can only play one by being one. People need to study the definition of “acting” more.
in the 1950s, everyone wanted to play Othello or Hamlet. Today, it's the Joker.
Right? I always found the stories of Jared Leto’s pranks and antics pathetic. It comes off as performative and totally unnecessary.
It’s called method acting and i can confirm it is… smh at all these kids
Method acting is about channeling.. "Spirits", it's very real and dark, actors after that really either go to therapy for the rest of their lives, or they don't remember who they are, and stay in character off set as well, heath ledger is a perfect example, their are bjnch of videos talking about his METHOD, he locked hilself in a hotel for four months only dleepi'g two hours a day, meditating on very disturbing images, doung a ritual.
It is one of the reasons why Method acting gets criticized and is generally considered unsafe for actors. Most actors do not know how to turn the intent off once they are done working on a production.
I disagree about Caesar Romero. He loved the role, and he took it seriously. That show was immensely popular
Agreed!
Honestly, Jared Leto's joker wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't go with the punk goth route. Like Joker would never get tattoos wtf.
Jaret leto is good actor in bad writing
Exactly, I don't see him really sitting there letting a tattoo artist up close asking him if he likes font of the damaged tattoo and if he's sure
I agree, people lovee to hate though.
finally someone who understands and isn't hating lmao
I agree
to be fair the Hole movie sucked so even Heath Ledger could not have carried it
@Alexander Rosario the movie sucked so it doesnt matter who and how acted as a Joker thats what everyione is saying
Actually, in Europe pretty much every critics loved the movie...
Yeah, the prick who narrated this, was a moron. Besides the fact that even a 2 year old knows leto was a joke.

Can we be honest about Jared Letos Joker? Jared’s acting wasn’t that bad but what really killed the character was the look they decided to go with.
KatZai23 I actually didn’t hate the smile tattoo on his hand. Had it been done right it could’ve been “joker hiding behind his smile” which is somewhat brilliant. But the rest of the look served no purpose. Which is a damn shame
Frankly, Jared Leto’s everything was laudable, brilliant.
Jack Nicholson embodied the more classic criminal mastermind Joker
Joaquin Phoenix embodied the more humane side and the fall into Darkness that likely leads to the creation of the Joker persona.
Heath and Joaquin both portray Joker well as the unreliable narrator that likes to make his origin multiple choice as well.
Cameron Monaghan did a great job portraying three versions of the Joker. But he had a lot more screentime to refine the character.

Sal And if he was written better and prepared for the role like Joaquin and so many actors before him, rather than sending dead rats and used condoms to his co-stars.That’s just f*cked up.
Phoenix's Joker is the best ! i never felt so stressed, frustrated after watching a movie. but his Joker, made me feel that 👏👏
Most underrated joker. Jerome valeska from Gotham. The “joker before the joker” (because fox couldn’t legally name him the joker lmao)
Gotham TV show compared to other DC shows is like that illegitimate child that’s better than most of the children but the parents don’t want to acknowledge them.
@@HUMAN-fq5ff the dc shows are the best bitt about dc

Yeah I didn't really like the show so much. I felt it was a stretch to imagine that all these characters unknowingly interacted with each other so much earlier that required too much suspension of disbelief.
eh...he was just imitating Mark Hamill.
Jared Leto didn't have a chance when he had to play that horrible version of the Joker
Nela no Leto actually had a lot to do with the makeup, costume, and obviously the presentation. Don’t make excuses for Letos god awful performance.
But he is a very bad actor himself without any help
Quick Silver he did a great job in dallas buyers club
Lego joker: it ain’t much but it’s honest work
Jared Leto seeing the title: hold my fake gun.
I still can't stop thinking about Joker almost daily, such a good movie. The last half hour left me with almost constant goosebumps.
Heath Ledger the best of all jokers

Phoenix’s joker had _PseudoBulbar Affect._ I developed it too after a lot of trauma. It’s no joke and not curable. Bi-Polar on steroids, I got the _bursting out crying_ version.

People after the trailer : He was the best

I am still like that. Also like that with Phoenix
I thought, and told my friends and family, I wouldn't have thought of him for the role. And then we saw the film...
I just love joaquins joker how he's so flamboyant and the dancing that's just how I would imagine joker. And the laugh is just the best!!
Yesss! I think his body posture and the flow of his movements are the best, like the way an actual court Jester would move
Agree!! And the fact that there's some sweet in him not just evil. His circumstances also relatable, i think, with alot of people

Jared Leto's joker seems inspired by a lot of modern mumble rappers / thugs. It was a little weird, but Joker is a weird dude. I think his interpretation was interesting
That's one of the more original comments I have heard about Jared's portrayal. I just pictured a lot of those young rappers who dye their hair and get their whole face tattooed. It could have been what they were going for. However, if so, I would say they misread their audience.
It was an interesting idea, but a bad Joker one in my opinion.
Dario CW im 100% it would had be better if that character wasnt the real joker but Jason Todd on his place... i mean, that would explain the change in his styke
Agreed
A GREAT FILM TO WATCH to show his versatility!!! IM STILL HERE.
that and Eslk the line are great examples of how Phoenix can TRULY IMMERSE himself into a role and TRULY become that individual!
He and his brother River are 2 of the greatest of all time! (Bless and rest poor River's soul. The night he passed away at the Viper Room.... Flea from RHCP was there and actually rode in the ambulance tot he hospital with River)
I still remember the night that happened! 💔💔💔💔😔😔😔😇😇
Screen rant: “what’s so funny?”
Joker: “you wouldn’t get it...”
Screen rant: “ trust me we will.”
I honestly don't know how anybody can hate joker from 2019 it's amazing it's a work of art
The Joker is one of the most interesting characters in all of fiction, portraying him *should* carry a certain weight for the actor.
I find it ironic that the people playing as Joker ends up almost like him in real life
I wanna know Who looked at heath ledger and thought to themselves - “this guy would make a great joker”. Visionary
Christoper nolan first wanted him for the role as batman. But couldnt. So he became the joker eventually
@@mikexii13 Whaaaaaat? We could have also had a good Batman in the Nolan movies!
@@marcbraun5342 maybe, just remember if he was Batman who would have been the Joker?
@@mikexii13 I do, but I think it's more important that the main character works, it really hurts an otherwise very good movie if it doesn't. And for the Joker, at least another version. For the Joker, a different version of it, I could think of Ray Wise, Willem Defoe and a few other. At least I was on eof the people believing in him for the part of the Joker because I saw him in Brother's Grimm, where he was awesome, but of course I did not know to that point that he also could be the lead. ;) Maybe they would have written the character a bit different!
@@marcbraun5342 I dont think Christian Bale was a bad Batman choice. After seeing nightcrawler i really think Jake Gyllenheal could pull it off as well. Willem Dafoe is interesting too
