Deffo done the right thing putting in a new board sake of the price you'll probably get recommended by the customer and potentially more work and more important you've left the electrics safe.
Sod that. Bill them.
@@travoltasbiplane1551 I agree, recommendations are worth nothing, I have done so many jobs for free when its like just change a light bulb or reset a breaker, they all say oh ill recommend you and never do... The customers that pay and are happy to pay whatever it costs are the ones that actually do recommend you..
Issue is explaining to a customer that they need to pay for a consumer unit change, especially when it was (as far as a customer sees it) working before you messed with it.
If you've still got the failed RCD, send it off to Big Clive for a post mortem teardown to see what the failure was
I was just thinking the same 😅
We'd like to see an autopsy!
You did the right thing, as it was fire hazard waiting to happen.
Of course I’ve got a spare Wyler RCD for that CU, been in the electrical trade from the age 15, SIX years apprenticeship ( we even did armature rewinds & motor overhauls ) I’m getting on a little, I’m 84 😂😂😂
Please get Adam a t-shirt that say's "As such". It's his favourite phrase in his own videos 😂😂😂
Definitely done the right thing. No question about it.
Good work Nick. Course your gonna do the right thing. Think CEF should watch the video and chuck in the box along with a couple of extras for similar situations. Wouldn't hurt them, nice bit of publicity. Liking the new video format too
Also a++ for the editing this episode 100% worth the effort
Good Job Nick. When renovating any house I think the very minimum is to consider getting the CU up to present standards and to remove anything that looks dodgy.
It's brilliant to hear that you benefit from using our job management software. Thank you!
Totally the right thing to do changing the board. Makes everyone sleep well at night. And well done for doing it FOC.
And this, guys, is why you get a survey done before buying a property 🙈 Nice one Nick for sorting it out
Well done Sir Nick! Nice to see Ad has found himself a van. Cheers
I've had the exact same type of RCD start smoking when I did an RCD test on it, the customer was watching me do it, and he was the one who first noticed it smoking. Had to put a temporary "site" board on for lights and first floor sockets as it was 1400 and go back and put a proper board up. Poor guy only wanted a socket above his desk in an office.
Nick great job on replacing the fuseboard it had to be done mate, Thats the difference with us who trained to be sparks all them years in college learning testing exams to be competent.
I think some kitchen fitters and other trades who are not certified to competently and safely carry out work should be reported and well in for doing it as its getting worse.
Safety is paramount as you say its peoples lives.
Got me cracking up with that fire starter Adam😂
I think it's awfully nice that you did the board gratis for the young couple who were hit by flooding and so many unexpected expenses. Not many people I know who'd do that.
You're starting to interfere with my less than stellar estimation of humanity.
Excellent ! Love fuse box stuff, class 😂
Love how supportive you are for Adam ❤
youve won life long customers whether they get you back in for additional work on that house or they move house again. a good reputation is earned.
Nothing wrong with Tripping lol …that’s me in a nut shell 🤣🤣🤣
Nice video Nick - loving the flash pictures!
nice vid but the graphics that keep ppopping up are quite annoying. Good of you and much respect for doing the board for free.
Now that Adam has qualified are you going to get another apprentice? What happened to Ben? Just watched the video of Adam
with his new van, he seems very pleased with it. I wished him luck on his up and comming business, I'm sure it will be a great success.
On the subject of fuse board fires. I attended an incident a couple of months back where an electrician carried out a test in one property with a spit supply and the consumer unit in the adjacent terrace exploded and took out a gas line causing an ignited gas leak inside the kitchen cupboard.
That connection between the two boards I think was something called E7 Heatwise where you had a push to make switch if you pushed it would turn the E7 board or immersion heater on for an hour's boost.
Top work and thanks for the video take care
Nick, you are a legend! Enough said.
Very good video, very good electricians. I was laughing a lot at the Adam Firestarter imagery though! 😂
You did the right thing putting on the new board, I couldn’t live with myself if something had happened , ie a fire. I've done the same myself, same situation, but my mates did pay me back after a month or so, so all good there. Another great vid!
You’ve done well there, I’ve never seen one of those old Wylex RCDs fail and I’ve tested hundreds of the bloody things.
Have you tapped it though?
@@travoltasbiplane1551 I usually reserve that for Crabtree Starbreakers to get them to actually work 😂
That’s a bad move replacing the fuseboard for free. It was broken before you touched it, so I would have informed the customer immediately and given them a price and told them they would have limited power on until the DB was changed
Good call nick
Ur a good man doing the right thing
Love the videos and also the Beard coming along nicely 👍
Thanks bud 👍
Can of worms that one lads.
I usually keep the economy 7 old storage heater cables on and put them on their own radial circuits, either as a single socket or keep them as a heater spur.
Assuming they're not in a useless place that they don't want.
💯% the right thing to do! Great video as per usual guys.
Well done Nick. You are doing the right thing reporting them. If they get stopped from your actions, you undoubtedly would have saved lives.
Good on you, well done.........fitting a new board the right thing to do and proves yet again you are a quality tradesman.
One question if I may; did this house have an EICR done prior to purchase?
they didn't even know about EICR's the estate agent, nor solicitor advise them on it which is ridiculous
@@NBundyElectricalhi Nick Do u have a discount code for velocity bags ( idealy the testing bag (£144 on the velocity site )
i once got told if the rcd don't reset after a few mins /trys then it's dead and needs replacing -- well done on sorting out a new board
nick getting his moneys worth out of photoshop in the vid eh LOL
Perfection plus! There was no way I'd walk away from that board. Depending on the customer, we'd either condemn it and have the power company issue a disconnection notice, swap it out.
One of them Wylex main switches went bang and blew the 100 amp when I re set it.
Good job and the right thing to do and I have 2 or 3 of them sort of RCDs there so old
Good to see you’re letting your kids to the video edits over the summer hols.
Love the artisan electric guy in your danger ahead. Couldn’t you remove the RCD circuit for the night? If your coming back anyway?
Is that an earth wire disconnected I see on the smaller fuse boards main earth terminal at 3:13...? Defo done the right thing here Nick!
fab DIY handy man job connector block on the neutral is dangerous, if you loose the natural you will have a high voltage postnatal between ground and active and all water pipe will be live and not currant return path
That was Nice of you Nick
the time i nearly had something electrical engulfed in flames, was in my lap, with lithium batteries. something went wrong with my project (i'm a hobbiest, low voltage stuff) which caused a dead short across some MOSFETs, which caused the voltage rails to glow bright orange and spray smoke literally everywhere. thankfully it didn't catch tho and i ripped the batteries out pretty quick.
Top notch editing. 👌
Such a great product fuse box ! Unfortunately customers don’t understand the the technical improvements in Bs7671. Also related trades who shouldn’t be going anywhere near if their not certified to do so.
Boss told him to hit it. Good on you soaking up the cost of the rcbo board. They’ll be back for more work down the line as the piggy bank re-fills. At a minimum things like the shonky security lights and sockets in conservatory should come your way.
the endless joy of adam + FIRESTARTER.
Top notch mate 👏😎
I suspect what happened with that RCD was that it was in/opperative and when the test button got stuck in, the test resister got energised for far longer than its designed to. Normally it fails safe, the resister burns out and is no more, although sometimes the particles emitted from the burnt carbon film can get into the rest of the device, cause it to flash over and take out the service fuse. I don't think its likely it would have gone on fire, stuff of that age had proper fire retardants in the plastic (later stuff phased them out to comply with environmental directives). I do keep a few RCDs like that for quick fixes (Yes I'm a hoarder :D) but I found out that there is more than one frame size in each rating which is slightly annoying. But if RCD is knackered, you'd have had to do something about it was you were fitting those extra sockets anyway, so if you didnt have one, its a board change regardless. Think you did well to get new board, testing and the additions all done in a day, only a small critism in I'd have pulled those two heating circuits into the back of the new DB, they might later end up being usful for extra socket radials at a later date.
For the RCD you could use a temporary one with 30milli amp protection until it’s replaced
But like walking on egg shells because might be not type tested for that board. Rest of the installation highly risky as well. No choice to replace think.
Only 1 minute in.... Nick enough stock photos already!! 😂😂 Good job changing it, I wouldn't trust that either!! Sketchy!
Your middle name should be 'Integrity'. By far the best sparks channel on YT.
Go Nick! What goes around comes around. Brownie Points to you!
Not a fan of the pop up pictures, presumably they are for comedy effect, but personally I think they only belong on shorts. Only my opinion. Other wise I’m enjoying the content you make, keep it up buddy!
Quality video as always! I was on a plane not too long ago and got talking to the bloke that was sitting next to me & the Mrs, turns out he's an electrician & also watches your videos, I'm from Staffordshire & he's from the lake district and there we were shouting BUNDY10 on a plane to Rome, small world!
Random question but the ear defenders Adams wearing, where are they from?
I’d have probably put an upfront RCD in somewhere (maybe near meter) and then had a discussion with customer about replacing the board
I tried with that to start with just no room anywhere for it mate
@@NBundyElectrical I’ve had practically same as well. Quick site visit for a quote, pressed the trip button and the RCD sticks off 😖🤦♂️ No chance of explaining it to the customer, I’ve touched it it’s my fault 🙄🤣
mate had one of those wylex rcds explode nearly in his face just missed his eyes on switch back on...be very careful with them...
The house that final destination built
What do you do?
You send an email or at least a text to the client and get something in writing back to confirm they want the board replacement or you recommend leaving it switched off as its a fire hazard.
To be honest, repeatedly smacking the RCD and then it smoking probably forced your hand.
That's a big mess for the electrics in what appears to be a fairly modern house
You would of had a field day in my new house I just brought
Outside light connected on a plug outside with a indoor socket on with a piece of gutter weather proofing it
The garage was on a 32amp but on flex across the washing line
I 5 spurs off of 1 plug on the ring
Fridge was wired in through a wall and on one of the 5 spurs
I had some great fun on that one
i think that RCD might be abit low on magic smoke
Id just send the bill with 1-2 year payday lol, I've got plenty of people waiting for me to do free work. Also, I always try to double or triple the panel size to breakers needed, makes your work 2x faster and easier. Also a lot the time the panel is too small in the end even if I did double it and I am doing a rewire.
Never had one of those Wylex rcd's fail times tbh.
Legend!
"Maybe we don't hit it again"... proceeds to hit it again 😂
if I were the customer, you wouldn't have had a very hard job convincing me to pay for a new board. nice of you to offer to absorb some of the cost. you would defo have a customer for life.
I've got 2 replacement rcds for that old board lol
I was booked once for a regular to do a job for her son and girlfriends new house. Gave me the sob story, new house, no money. Did the job and next time I went, a few months later to fit a TV! Sky one!, they also had a new puppy that cost 2k, not to mention I didnt notice, he had a new sporty Merc.
Never give for free or cheap.
that white flex looked like old school butyl
the saddest thing is
artisan signed that off last week ...bish bash bosh home in time for chicken dippers
front the cost give the the benefit of paying back a few bob a month i know its a risk but come on nicky do em a favor and that might work out with future work from their friends ?
If you're adding sockets you couldn't do it and be compliant without a type a RCD anyway. Board would always have needed changing.
A handyman under the sink. OMG, how much adult movies I saw starting this way... Your OF channel is ? 🙃 By the way, Nick's 'dolf mustache is so weird. 🤣
A point or three:
1) I totally agree re. CEF. It was relief when one opened round the corner from where I used to work as it meant I didn't have to use WF any more.
2) How the heck did you fit that new board so quickly??
3) That still of the bikini clad woman is offensive. There needs to be an apostrophe in "ADAM'S MUM".
Just out of interest, why didnt you allow for a new board from the start as the rcd wouldnt of been suitable for additional works being Type AC? I'm constantly questioning myself whether i should be upgrading the rcd on additional works as i see other sparks cracking on & leaving the existing in situ.
To my knowledge a type AC RCD for additional works is absolutely fine mate regarding minor work certificate. I think it only applies to adding new circuits to fuse boards.
@@NBundyElectrical I considered that when the regs changed. But at what point do you decide that the customer will plug in devives that leak DC current or change existing lamps to led. I'm not sure if i'm over thinking it. Maybe a half day wait on hold to the NIC on my next day off may be in order.
@@NBundyElectricalna the reg is fixed loads with no DC only. If you add sockets those new ones don't comply with amendment 2
New editing is brilliant by the way really adds something, class videos as per big lad
Much appreciated mate
Please refrain from using foul language, “s_e_p up” isn’t a word a spark should’ve ever use
Unfortunately, my dyslexia is not helping me realise what you spell, give us a clue please
@@NBundyElectricalhaha I can't understand what he meant either tbh
@@NBundyElectricalfirst word sweep second word up 😂😂
@@leighcaldwell8652 ah lmao
@@NBundyElectrical it's a joke based on electricians not being allowed to sweep up btw
Credit goes to the reply above mine though
Maybe they could pay for the board in instalments.
Can't believe the house was sold in that state.
It is virtually impossible to buy a house or any property in South Africa without an inspection being done, and a COC issued. This has to include a water inspection and a beetle certificate. Is this the case in the UK or...?
Beetle inspection (although masonry bees can be a problem) aside you need an Electrical Inspection if the house is to be rented but if you are purchasing then it's the potential buyers decision if they want an electrical inspection - many will have to have one done as a condition of a mortgage anyway. Many sellers would have one done as a selling point but not - as I understand it - a legal requirement - fortunately we operate a caveat emptor system which I prefer to an over regulated system.
Yeah that board was shot, deffo did the right thing there, smoking RCD maybe one of the coils inside either way very dangerous .
Yeah some DIYer had some fun at that house haha
A drop for a TV Coax over the fireplace is probably needed . Other than that a great video (subliminal intrusions aside)
New consumer unit and charge them...no brainer, and take out all the dodgy stuff!
Top man this video is smoking 😂
Call it a moving in present, do them just an amazing deal on it all, it's not like more work won't come from it anyways down the road
Board change all day long but if you need a replacement rcd for that board I can get it.
I haven't watched the whole video yet. If you fancy a job in Lancs let me know???? Also did you say to Adam you don't need him 5 days or week or has he chosen to do his own bits??
For a Few Dollars More - Smoker scene🚬
Board got to go
We Didn’t Start the Fire - by Billy Joel
And yet somehow these bath fitters get lucky.
Can we have a variety of but(t)s next time? - Adam's Mum is quite fit! 😜🤣
lol ill see what I can do
did just hear a sparky say he was doing something nice
Do you ever hear from DSS electrical?
Pop out and get a BG dual RCD 😂
na
Just remove RCD! Make safe!
