I borrowed this controller, since my leverless controllers are all the typical layout, and it took me 5 minutes to orient and learn the game. I wouldn't change the layout at all, it actually makes more sense. If it's programmed with Arduino it should be possible to make it show up as a Switch controller. I've done that for a custom controller for playing pinball.
When I was young, in my country, Nintendo was not selling their consoles, there where only clones of them. So Nintendo never have any presence in the market. PC and older consoles clones where only choice for years. Some day I got this fighting game, that needed extra app be played. It turned out to be super smash Bros run via N64 emulator. I played it on my keyboard, so buttons only gaming was my default for years. It was so much fun. It's still may favourite fighting games of all time.
I can think about one thing that this thing will probably do better than a gamecube controller. Reliability and consistency. Snapback is a huge issue with gamecube controllers that there's multiple solutions for but for the most part. it's temporary. There is no way you are going to struggle with snap back with this kind of controller
The default layout is actually really good, the pros maybe switch one button (Z and L i think), but for melee it's the best you can come up with. For ultimate it's maybe a bit less important, so you can switch it more. It's definetly hard to get used to, but it's very ergonomic and worth it (at least for melee IMO)
My friends used to call me a cheater for using the C stick for Melee when we were kids, so from then on I’ve always just used A with directional buttons for my smash attacks and I feel like the pro controller accommodates this style really well
it does, but it requires both cables plugged in because the power isnt bridged properly, and firmware has to be updated on the adapter if it's really old. mayflash adapters aren't as good as official adapters sadly
I have a lot of bad luck with snapback inputs with Switch pro controllers (which is when the control stick makes a microscopic input in the opposite direction when flicking back to neutral, which can mess up directional moves in tight situations), so the B0XX-style controller looks really attractive to me right now. Thanks for the review!
14:23 I don't think Bob was using the gc controller wrong, it's just that tilts don't feel good to do consistently on analog stick. Hence devices like these.
I use a stock 8bitdo arcade stick for smash and there is misconception I'd like to point out. You CAN still walk and tilts without a c-stick. Hold down to crouch, then roll into whatever direction input you want. And if doing quarter circles for f-tilt sounds bad to you, the arcade stick was never going to be your thing. Having to re-learn the game on a new control setup really helped me clean up my movement and stop depending on shield/rolling for defence. Short hops are also much easier now, which is massive.
A wired Pro Controller actually has an additional two-ish frames of latency. That’s a big deal when you’re using a fight pad / box, so it makes sense why they went for the GameCube approach, albeit still inconvenient.
Captain Falcon is a character that can utilize dash cancels which cancels running animation and allows to do pretty much any move you wouldn’t normally be able out of running animation but requires C tilt stick to do so
I don’t own a switch, but I’ve wanted to get into fighting games like Smash for a while. Brawlhalla was fun for a bit but ultimately bored me after a few weeks of it being released. Multiversus came out recently (played a bit of the open alpha before it went into beta) and I’m having much more fun on there. My main issue, however, is that the game is quite buggy given that it’s a beta. The default controls use the joystick for up down left right, and while that’s pretty normal, the issue is that when remapping these to the dpad (my preferred way of using the directional controls) it bugs out and doesn’t detect inputs half the time no matter which controller I have connected. I wonder if one of these controllers would help that issue as I could just map the directional buttons to certain inputs on the stick and have the game detect it as a stick input rather than a dpad input
I've seen people using similar controllers to play Tetris and rhythm games. I'd love to try someday, but I'm affraid of the learning curve. My brain is getting stubborn.

as someone who's been playing on b0xx-style layouts for several years now, the modified layout here is truly horrendous. there's a certain level of understanding that should be required before destroying your entire button layout. the modifiers make sense where they are, and you dont need up to jump when you have jump buttons on the right hand. rebinding a in particular was truly heinous, cant believe that one. i will say, though, things like jump + shield being next to each other for wavedashes and jump + z being next to each other for jc grabs aren't needed in ultimate, but the default bindings really do make sense, despite the learning curve.

I'm a "keyboard + mouse" type player, also, I'm preferring the arrow keys instead of WASD. I just can't play effectively with a controller. (I grew up with PC only.)
To be tediously pedantic about this, the history of the word "pad" in videogame hardware naming conventions would suggest a handheld controller (e.g. "joypad", "gamepad"). I'd suggest "fighting board" or "fightboard", since the form factor has more in common with a keyboard.
These controllers were made specifically with competitive melee in mind. The whole layout is specifically designed to be the best competitively and especially ergonomically for melee players. I've played on these style controllers for a few years now and I absolutely love them. Glad to see Wulff Den shining some light on them.
Yeah the confusing layout is made with complicated melee techs in mind. It's confusing as heck for non-melee players but it makes sense when you know what the techs are.
I got unreasonably tilted at him messing up the entire layout, it really is, like he said, something you just gotta get used to. If you're not putting in the effort of learning something different, why even bother with going digital?
D-pads were never good to begin with. Nintendo used those instead of sticks because they were cheaper. It made the NES a much worse experience than it needed to be for a pretty small savings in cost.
I was seriously considering getting this one very recently, after wanting a button controller for rhythm games. I mostly wanted to find something that had large arcade like buttons. But it being detected as a gamecube controller was a huge turnoff for me. If it could be connected directly to the switch or at least flashable, then it would have been an easy buy. Ended up getting the Gamo 2 instead (which funnily enough just came in today).
I'm that weird person who never understood the joycon hate. They work well for me in everything I've played and I'd much rather the smaller form factor of attached to the device (I mostly play portable) than a separate controller. Glad at least one pro gets it can be an option, haha
Well, yes, that's an expensive controller, but ANY Gamecube controller is expensive now, which kinda blows. Excellent video, though. Always a joy to see a new video in the den.

It is a cool video and all, but TAP JUMP STAYS OFF THOUGH
To be tediously pedantic about this, the history of the word "pad" in videogame hardware naming conventions would suggest a handheld controller (e.g. "joypad", "gamepad"). I'd suggest "fighting board" or "fightboard", since the form factor has more in common with a keyboard.
this is internet historian level sponser segment.
The ads give me huge better call saul vibes lol
These controllers were made specifically with competitive melee in mind. The whole layout is specifically designed to be the best competitively and especially ergonomically for melee players. I've played on these style controllers for a few years now and I absolutely love them. Glad to see Wulff Den shining some light on them.
Yeah the confusing layout is made with complicated melee techs in mind. It's confusing as heck for non-melee players but it makes sense when you know what the techs are.
I got unreasonably tilted at him messing up the entire layout, it really is, like he said, something you just gotta get used to. If you're not putting in the effort of learning something different, why even bother with going digital?
i bet the sonic mains would love a bop it controller
"Mayorio maker" lmfao it's "MAR-IO Maker"
Seems like a pad focused on a PC keyboard orientation.
High energy plug Bob is a bit scary. Maybe less coffee before you do these?
I’d love to try playing defender - that LH button arrangement would suit the up/down movement and thumb to reverse direction. Damn I’m old.
D-pads were never good to begin with. Nintendo used those instead of sticks because they were cheaper. It made the NES a much worse experience than it needed to be for a pretty small savings in cost.
Really appreciate the great editing in this video.
If I could guarantee that my joycons wouldn't drift, I would only play joy cons
If they didn’t drift so easily, I’m sure that people wouldn’t hate the Joycons as much.
Best. Ads. Ever. Keep doing you Bob! Love the content dood!
Well, yes, that's an expensive controller, but ANY Gamecube controller is expensive now, which kinda blows. Excellent video, though. Always a joy to see a new video in the den.
where is the copy of your button layout code?!!
