I got to try the Glyph at The Big House this past weekend and got to have a few conversations with one of the engineers of the project. I've been playing on a rectangle style controller for Melee, Ultimate, Street Fighter, and Guilty Gear since the R1 B0XX came out. This is the best version of the rectangle that I have seen yet. It has an impressively premium feel and the possibilities for customization from the LEDs, to the ease of changing both artwork and layouts (I saw the engineer change to a different set in just 2 minutes!), to the expansion bay and possible retro cables are endless and are very exciting. I also think that the full set is absolutely the way to go. I was worried when I first saw the Glyph that I would lose my hand placement immediately but I played for a bit and it felt natural the entire time coming from a standard rectangle. The people behind the project seem incredibly passionate and competent too. I really can't recommend backing the project enough and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one of my own!
I saw this in one of your videos recently (I think the Nitro Deck one) and was hoping you would cover this controller. I fell in love with the design, so thank you!
I'm glad you mentioned a keyboard at the end of the video. Because that's exactly what I would use instead of this. It's definitely a very cool design and if I didn't already mess with emulators I'd be thinking about it. If it wasn't over half the price of my Steam Deck.
Honestly, the only reason I don't use these types of controllers outside of being a broke bitch is that the buttons have more space between them than what I'm used to with a keyboard. That being said, I like how they angle the layouts, and it'd be interesting to combine that keybox shit with this concept.
We have a the majority Ultimate left stick coordinates mapped out already. When this thing hits the shelves, we'll likely have a program for designing and finding all the coordinates for your modifiers even.
Bob you GOTTA give it up on the "fightpad" dealio, that ALREADY has a meaning in fighting games. A fightpad is a handheld controller, like an Xbone controller, and usually will have six buttons on the face of it to easily support Street Fighter. Look up the "Hori Octa" for an example of what that is. We call controllers like a DS4 "Pads" All Button Controllers, or stickless, or leverless, or rectangle to refer to things like a Hitbox, Smash Box, Frame1, or WASD box or what's in this video. Adore the video, love your work, JUST SAYIN' yur crossing the streams for people not in the know.
I think some other people already said this, but FYI, "pads" in the fighting game community refer to "normal" controllers, like a dualshock4. I don't know the etymology for sure, but I assume it's because these controllers had a dpad instead of an arcade stick, differentiating the two controller types you'd use in classic 2D fighting games. I would also recommend saying "arcade controller" or "arcade stick" instead of "fight stick" because these are used for more than just fighting games. It also makes it less confusing when you change half the name for the stick-less ones. You used a few terms in this video like leverless and all-button (I also hear all-digital sometimes) which are fine of course. These things have a *lot* of names and it's hard to say which ones will stick in the long-term. In the Smash community people also call them "rectangles" sometimes. Other names I would avoid are "hitbox" (because it's a specific brand/controller) and "box controller" (because it sounds like the B0XX which is again a specific branded controller). I had a soft spot for the "rectangle" name, but it's admittedly confusingly generic, so I've been trending more toward saying "leverless arcade controller" recently. It's also pretty safe to just refer to your actual specific controller by its name, like Flatbox, Frame1, LBX or whatever else.
I always appreciate how well all the videos are made. You always make great points that actually matter. It’s very clear you put much effort into making great content. ✌🏻
I def like this and decided to get in on the pre-order for one, dip my toe into this world of craziness. I hope that they end up offering the ability to have custom panels built so we can submit designs and stuff
It's an art case, so you'd be able to just stick a piece of paper under the buttons to make whatever you want if you cut your own holes out. But I'd recommend checking out the website FOCUSATTACK for custom fightstick art printing. It's super cheap, like $15-20 for a print. That's how I got the art on my Snackbox Micro.
These controllers really proof the point when I raged at the best played with a controlelr screen on super meat boy. That game just plays better with a keyboard. The existance of controllers like this shows that.
I mean no, it's definitely more comfortable and intuitive to play games like that with a gamepad until you've transcended to a certain level of nerdiness about games with years of experience that you veer towards things like speedrunning or getting seriously good at fighting games where the sheer accuracy and immediacy of these kinds of pads will be worth it to learn and get used to. And then, maybe, yeah, after MORE years of mastering them it might feel more comfortable than a controller depending on the kind of person you are. But for most people, for most levels of play, for platformers and such, a game pad is absolutely going to feel way more comfortable and intuitive
The advantage to leverless arcade controllers is that you can lay out the buttons in a more ergonomic shape. You can also have them pretend to be a controller (xbox 360, gamecube, etc.), and operate at different voltages (e.g. 3.3V and 5V) for more console compatibility.
I am picking one of these up. Once I saw the fact it has the option for a nunchuck I was sold. On another subject I love 8bitdo. Those guys never miss. I am using their keyboard right now to type this.
"You're gonna need a whole lot of buttons" he looked so done when he said that omfggg ALSO YES JADE SWITCHESSSS I feel like if you've always wanted something like this but never got to buy all the earlier options, then this is great, since you can have those multiple layouts. Won't have to buy anything else xD
I know you're talking a lot about controllers, but I think something like this would be really good for PC gaming. I notice a lot of PC games/ports require a lot more keys than console games do. I usually end up becoming confused so I just plug in my controller to my PC and play that way lol.
Personally, I'm really looking forward to the Superslab from Prong considering its easy to put on custom artwork, looks to be incredibly ergonomic, and most importantly, is very portable due to its size and the controller bag it comes with (can't tell you how big of a deal that last part is). Hopefully it knocks it over the park when it comes out to the general public.
Just a tip, he suggested using an adapter for series s and playstaton. If you intend to use something like this for the xbox series consoles, you should wait awhile. They're currently rolling out updates that prevent unlicensed third party controllers and adapters. This way, you don't end up buying one thats effected.
The modified 8bitdo fightstick you got isn't called a fightpad, fightpads are actually just your normal controller but with 6 face buttons. A fightstick that uses WASD is simply called a mixbox.
"Mixbox" is really a brand name like Hitbox (the biggest name in leverless arcade controllers). I guess the WASD config is still really niche and so doesn't have any other convenient shorthand. There's so many configs that it's only natural that terms like "fightpad" and "fightstick" get applied to controller configs that are similar but not the same as what is actually being referred to. (I'm big on fightsticks for fighting games, but I also love fightpads like the Hori Fighting Commander for 2D platform games.)
“Imagine being at a tournament in pools and you have to switch between the Smash layout and the Guilty Gear layout because you’re cracked at both.” Ahhh so this is for Leffen when he switches full time to boxx controllers. Hahahah
the 8bitdo light thing is cool but doesn't really carry over to a controller with customizable layouts so I can see why it doesn't make it into higher end more customizable products, now it could be possible with an e-ink display but I can see why that would be left at the wayside
i feel like this would be great for some MMO's. combined with a multi button mouse would be great, especially if you can shift some pad button with a mouse key press.
You need it if you want more precise inputs and better shortcut commands that TOTALLY don't give me an unfair edge, I mean just try it out day one against me and you'll see that you aren't instantly as good as me, I basically require these and refuse to play on anything else but they DO NOT GIVE ME AN ADVANTAGE. At all. It's the SAME as a stick! It just ...takes me a lot longer to do everything on a stick as quickly or as consistently as I do it on the Hitbox! That's all! It's NOT unfair, and a simple a coincidence that a more complicated and expensive to produce controller costs $50-250 less than the new Hitboxes. That's speculation!
These leverless arcade controllers also work great for platformers and puzzle games (tetris, panel de pon). Depending on what the game you're playing needs, any of the controllers built with Smash in mind can probably already do a lot, since they already have buttons for both analog sticks out of the box. You use a modifier button to change between run/walk (how far the emulated stick is pushed). It may sound limiting, but really you don't need every granular bit of motion of an analog stick for most games. You can play something like Super Mario Sunshine with a Frame1 pretty well.
Yeah agreed, I actually used leverlless controllers to play beat'em ups. But still prefer the approach being done with the sworl--like the idea of analog stick like controls + arcade style buttons. Just think it opens up more possibilities for game genres.
Is there an adapter out there to just let you use a keyboard for this kinda thing on consoles (to dip one's toes sans $200+)? It would need to let you map these modifier keys correctly, but I feel like a decent keyboard could one up one of these custom built dooders since you can just take out the keys/caps you don't need and select the perfect key comfort from an entire full keyboard with numpad.
Have you ever used a razer nostromo? It's a really unique input device for PC. Might be worth checking out. It's actually nice for things like video editing as well as games.
1:50 Happy to see a cameo appearance from the 8BitDo Retro Keyboard. Best typing experience I've ever had. I'll stick with the GameCube controller for Smash. I get the appeal of an all-button controller for it, but it just looks insanely complex to me. I am interested in a regular Hit Box controller, though. I just wish Hit Box would stop dragging their feet on native PS5 compatibility.
That's a really nice deskmat. As far as the controller, I'm trying to think... Is it possible to configure all 39 buttons to make it playable for an MMO like FFXIV. That way I can play with a controller with a keyboard-like feel to it and have it make sense.
@@CranesLab I'm sorry, I may probably didn't make my point in the question clear. I'm asking someone who knows FFXIV, would 39 buttons be enough to do everything you need to do in the game. Because I would love to try to play it on something like this, but I'm wondering if it's enough buttons, or would it be too overwhelming to attempt something like this with a game that requires so many different hotkeys. I really appreciate your information though. Thanks for replying.
Does the glyph controller have a variant that has buttons to map the sticks anyway? I'd want an option to be able to map all inputs on the controller for general use.
@@WulffDenOk cool thanks. My comment was in response to the "if you want sticks, what are you doing here?" bit. 😁 But I see you were talking about on the controller itself. I just want a good controller with large buttons that can be mapped to all buttons on a console's controller, including sticks. I have a Fanta Palm for playing some rhythm games, but the stick travel is too much for my liking. Jumped onto the Kickstarter as I think this should satisfy my needs.
The Smash layout in the HayBox firmware has left and right sticks mapped, dpad is accessible with a modifier + right stick buttons. So if you need both sticks and the dpad all at once it might not quite do what you want. If you only occasionally need the dpad, like for a taunt in Smash, it should be doable. For anything where you want to use the dpad for basic movement (2d fighters, platformers, etc.) you'd probably want to hop over to the FGC layout, where the dpad replaces the left stick, and analog sticks are not accessible.
How can you play smash without the UP buttons ? Alot of imputs requires UP. These controller looks cool, but they are not for me, to me playing a platformer on a keyboard is the least comfortable position to be IMO. Cool designs nonetheless.
I know it works for PC, but could you try it on the Steam Deck? I wonder if it would just WORK? Seems like a "no-brainer" for building a custom arcade cabinet type setup!
@@MendedPearl Yes, but generally when people say "PC" they mean Windows and some devices don't have Linux support. I just want to verify compatibility with Steam OS before I consider. ^_^
It will definitely work with the Steam Deck. It's running a modified version of the HayBox firmware and using a Pi Pico microcontroller (according to Crane). I have an Open-Frame1 controller which is also Pico-based and running HayBox and it works on my docked Deck. There used to be a bug with the dpad not working, but it was fixed in an update in the last couple months and it all works great now. You may have some issues navigating menus in Melee mode because it's not "pushing" the "stick" as far, but in Ultimate, Rivals, or Project M modes it works fine, and if you use the dpad it also works fine.
@@SoundToxin Love to hear it! Well, I think I might start considering it! I've been debating on getting a second Steam Deck and doing something like what Wulff did a while back for a while. Just need money.. XD
TBH with Controllers like this, I always wonder who is the main audience they're targeting. Cause for Casuals it's kinda overkill and too much money for normal playthroughs where that extra bit of precision wouldn't even really matter all that much. For Pro's it's not really useful cause as far as I know they can't use custom controllers on tournaments cause that could be an unfair advantage, right? So why would they ever train on one. So that leaves a group of people who don't care about tournaments but still are so dedicated to certain games that they buy custom controllers for each of them. Not saying there's anything wrong with that of course. I just wonder what are you're main reasons to get a controller like this and do you use it for a lot of things or mainly for one specific thing?
All button controllers are legal in fighting game tournaments. Now with Nintendo's new tournaments guidelines it may not be the case with Smash anymore, but I've been playing both 2D fighters and Platform fighters in tournament with all button controllers for a few years now.
@@Mufnman64 Aah ok, didn‘t expect that. I thought since they couldn‘t possibly know how they‘re programmed that that‘s not allowed to bring your own. Seems I was wrong. Thanks for answering :)

I really appreciate your information though. Thanks for replying.
Maybe it’s in braille saying “lol you bought this”.
Does the glyph controller have a variant that has buttons to map the sticks anyway? I'd want an option to be able to map all inputs on the controller for general use.
You'll be able to make stick inputs to whatever button you want, if that's what you're asking
Is one of the buttons for Jiggle Physics???
My Warcraft dps is gonna go up by .32%. Thank you.
What's your monitors?
BOB! STILL WAITING ON YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE AYN ODIN 2! PLEASE!
Does anyone have the stl file for his 3d printed concave keycaps???
I called this the mentos arcade controller on twitter
Will the desk mat be available after the holidays in stock? Just can swing it rn but I’ll def swing it once my new job as a sys admin starts 🎉
I'm planning on trying to keep this one in stock for a while, so yes
not enough for salt and sanctuary lmao
SOOO MANY BUTTONS
How can you play smash without the UP buttons ? Alot of imputs requires UP. These controller looks cool, but they are not for me, to me playing a platformer on a keyboard is the least comfortable position to be IMO. Cool designs nonetheless.
I know it works for PC, but could you try it on the Steam Deck? I wonder if it would just WORK? Seems like a "no-brainer" for building a custom arcade cabinet type setup!
steam deck is just a steam machine, if steam can use the controller then steam deck can.
XD
Do you have to go to a Nintendo tailor if you pop a button ? #wulffdendad
har har
The buttons are to keep you occupied
a fidget box
@@WulffDen it's like a fidget spinner for adults who like fighting games
use it for the smash tournament and get banned by nintendo for not using a first party controller!
Oh yeah it’s Thursday
A regular controller has just as many inputs lol
