Comparing against's Haute42's products (mainly M16 series) at cheaper price points, I would say going for the steelbox is preference. The only steelbox benefits I see are larger menu buttons, user replaceable artwork, and internals supporting a separate plate + silencing foam (similar to custom keyboards). I do wish Sagaklabs made an XL verison like the Haute42 T16 because Haute42 doesn't have an XL version of their M16 (metal housing). I also think the steelbox could benefit from being another 1-3 inches wider because I find the snackbox micro more manageable on the lap at its compact size. Because of their experience with custom keyboards, it's also a missed opportunity for Sagaklabs to offer different plate/pcb mounting system (like gasket-style mounting).
haute pad T16 also has these buttons, they're literally a life saver (ingame). in T8: 1+3 on left extra, 2+4 on right extra. SF6 they're really usefull for parry and DI. Looks like this controller uses the same GP2040-CE board as the haute pad. Those two buttons would definitely be super useful, I'm seriously considering getting that just for SF6 though my problem with it is that it doesn't support PS5.
I thought about a hitbox, but am most comfortable with pads and have spent a few hundred on them (Razer Wolverine Ultimate version 1 and 2 for XBOX and Victrix BDP for PS5). @enrique7934Honestly, the Victrix Pro BFG is awesome. I currently use that for Tekken and Sf6. I also own the Raion and Commander 4 and hate them both, but to each their own
@enrique7934 The Raion is the biggest piece of garbage according to most reviews, especially the first iteration but people still complain about the new ones, either on youtube or on forums, and all that for the price of two 1st party controller
there are options for larger sized pads - razer kitsune, haute42 t series… i got the haute s series and it looks about the same size as the one in this video. It is a bit small for lap play so I ordered a T … will see which one I like better and return the other one.
Why are these flatbox pre-builds, that are shown by big FG content creators, so expensive? When you can buy them cheap off Aliexpress? This is $140, a Haute42 G Series is as low $35 for the G12 and around $45 for the G16... What's so special about steelbox that it costs two to three times more?
Yeah i left a comment asking him to review the Haute42 controllers. The G series seems to be the exact same thing, but a third the price. I think they just have access to production lines in China allowing them to eat the lunch of these small scale western companies.
@@TheCackling I think its more likely that the wester brands are charging double or triple. Keep in mind that all the electronic parts are produced in China, so the reality is that the western buyers have been ripped off. Haute42 cuts the western middle man and produces its controllers and sell them at affordable prices.
nothing special, is just that the word hasn't gotten around that aliexpress is the way to go. In fact most of these cheaper aliexpress clones only started coming out in the last 12 months. I also guess these expensive brands are sending in units to influencers to get them covered etc

Ugh I reallllly gotta tone it down with the controller purchases but I did buy one of these. The extra buttons are just too useful, my one gripe with leverless so far has been that my pinky is really short and I struggle with the furthest action button. Nice to see people adding this functionality.
Hitboxes are slowly starting to look more and more like MIDI Fighters lol xD (now I'm seriously starting to wonder if a MIDI Fighter could actually be used as a fighting game controller... hmmm)
@@gcole6The controller itself (the PCB) is more important than what kind of buttons are on the outside. If you only want to play on PC, there are utilities that can map MIDI inputs to keyboard inputs. Some Osu!Mania players do this to play the game using MIDI keyboards. For console, it is theoretically possible to convert MIDI to Xinput through software running on a separate device (like a raspberry pi or similar) that then passes Xinput on to the console. But you'd have to write that software and configure the hardware yourself. (Edit: and you'd run into authentication problems with current gen consoles) Or I guess you could rip out the guts of the MIDI Fighter and replace them with a game controller PCB, but then it would just be a (very expensive) game controller.
@@SoundToxin yeah, they also announced 2 more series, one like the G but low profile and another one that's injection molded. having access to Chinese manufacturers gives them a huge edge
Ive been dying for a leverless controller with extra buttons, but that is way too small (and id prefer a left pinky buton as one of the two buttons personally.
Those do exist check out the keebbrawler and keebfightees from Mavercade. I have one similar to the video except L3 is left of the left direction button (left pinky button) and R3 is on the right side of the jump button. It also has an extra up button above the down direction for a wasd type layout (remap it to touch pad to be tourney legal) all buttons are fully customizable if you connect it to ur pc
For hitbox, I think it as least should have one button on the left or right of the jump button. So two of your thumbs have buttons to press without moving them.
I recently created my own controler based on my layout on a keyboard. That's exactly what I did. But I also added two pinky finger buttons. There's almost zero delay between my reaction and my pressing those buttons, since my thumbs and pinky fingers are constantly resting over their dedicated buttons
hi regarding the extra L3 & R3 buttons.... what is the best place for them down like in this video or above the action buttons i mean above square & triangle add extra L3 & R3 ? what is the best place for them .
I am not left handed but when it comes to fighting games I am a lefty. I wish there are more inverted hitbox layout out there for 6 other people like me.
Hello. I'm one of the six other people. I built a stick using the builder kits for exactly this reason. Those kits can be inverted. Pretty sure you can do that for leverless too
No you're not lefty and may just have realized that those layout weren't right, on guitar right handed people play the rhythm with the right hand and pick the notes with the left one, the logic would thus want that on a controller you do your movements with the dominant hand and actions buttons with the other one. That's why some keyboard users use a layout with movements on the right.
I just got mine today and am so impressed. I have several hitboxes right now and this is my favorite. It's very heavy and solid. Only negative I would say is that the SOC modes always work on the same buttons, so if you map your movement keys to anything else, the original directional keys are going to be effected, and not the remapped keys. Kind of a bummer for me with how I play. Still looking for a way to remap buttons via firmware and can't figure out how on PC. I see the shortcut for config mode but it just takes me to a general raspberry pi website. Wish there was a configuration tool on the website to remap keys. Other than this though, very very good little controller. Definitely not getting rid of this - ever. I'll always find some use for it even if something better comes along later.
I like my pinky to have a button on my left hand, so I move my movement buttons over to the right 1 button, and use the A button as my right dpad button. My pinky button becomes a shift modifier under which I can remap the entire layout to other functions. It feels perfectly natural to play this way, and I don't use the W button for up anyways, so I use that as a Home button. I remap buttons 1234 to the top buttons on the right hand, to emulate the feel of the JKL; keys on a keyboard. The lesser used buttons R/L/RB/LB are the bottom row, but of course, every game is different and I have custom layouts (and custom sticks) for various games @@flodderr
i'm so happy that they're tailoring all these new leverless game controllers to people with tinier hands :D I know it sucks for most people, but for me, smaller is much more comfortable, and I like the pricepoint as well. Too bad it's sold out atm. I never use my flatbox on my lap, but if I did, I'd likely put one of my giant stuffed animals or a pillow on my lap before resting the controller on top for better posture.

sorry for noob question but I dunno how to google it. How am I supposed to do double-quad circles for ults in SF6 with lever controller? Like, it's incredibly hard and slow isn't it? I want to dive into SF6 (bought it and Hori RAP4 arcade stick) but don't want to use Modern controls coz it's make no sense to play fightings like this in my opinion, but hell the stick combos are insane. Do I need to spend like 10 years to muscle memorize it? Or just throw away stick and buy buttons controller?
Lol i used to do it on a beat up xbox 360 pad. If I can do that you can do it on an arcade stick. Just practice, its all muscle memory. It takes time but not 10 years of time. You'll get it in a matter of weeks.
Not a noob question at all. Even after months of playing many people find it difficult. It helps to be conscious that you’re limited by the speed you lift your fingers off the buttons after pressing them. Keeping your wrist raised also helps to prevent undue tension in the fingers and allows you to roll your wrist if necessary.
I would be interested, but I feel like it might be to small for my hands. Btw did you had to put it together by yourself? On their Homepage there is a video for their Keyboard, where the person had to put the keyboard together themselves.
Hi man, sorry to ask here but do you prefer the betop c3 or the hori octa ? I feel like there aren't that much choices for fightpads and my stick is too loud, at that state I might just use my keyboard or get a leverless with brown switches
I want to try one of these so bad but man the price.. Just to find out you completely hate it lol. Finding a place with a good return policie is probably a must starting out.

i dont know how much longer i can continue to play fighting games for knowing nearly every person out their is looking for a controller to use to make them better destroying the spirit of the game. screwing up directional inputs is a part of the genre and keyboards and controllers like that ruin the spirit of the game and make it 10x harder and difficult for any one using a stick or a pad and it just sucks. every time i see someone Korean back dash to the end of the screen in like 2 seconds i take a deep sigh and go fckn hit box... then i end up just standing their while they side step and Korean back dash wave dashing all around the place for 2 rounds and think to my self i would be physically dead if i did that for that long on a stick. were as on a keyboard or a hitbox your hitting 3-4 buttons with basically 0 effort. its going to get to the point were you have a hitbox with 60 buttons on it made for a specific character with lines of combos sett in the button configuration so all you will have to do is pick a line of buttons press them all in a line to lay out a massive instant kill combo. we at least need rules and regulation in the competitive lvls
You're exaggerating. Hitbox is just a niche controller and is in no way popular enough to be used by most people. Most that will buy the games would be using a gamepad (or a PC keyboard if they're on PC and have no pad). Hitbox is only used primarily if you're on at least semi high to high level play.

Omg it's been a while one of my favourite RUclipsrs 🙏🏽I haven’t seen you since you reviewed sonic advance 2….4 or 5 years ago and when you moved into Tokyo apartment
Ugh I reallllly gotta tone it down with the controller purchases but I did buy one of these. The extra buttons are just too useful, my one gripe with leverless so far has been that my pinky is really short and I struggle with the furthest action button. Nice to see people adding this functionality.
Hitboxes are slowly starting to look more and more like MIDI Fighters lol xD
(now I'm seriously starting to wonder if a MIDI Fighter could actually be used as a fighting game controller... hmmm)
A midi fighter is just a bunch of arcade buttons in a chassis. So yea it could be used as a fightstick.
(Edit: and you'd run into authentication problems with current gen consoles)
Or I guess you could rip out the guts of the MIDI Fighter and replace them with a game controller PCB, but then it would just be a (very expensive) game controller.
Theres also the huate42 M series for a similar layout and cheap, I've the G16 and they're insanely good for the price. Gp2040 is a great software
Haute42*
thanks for the heads-up. gonna order one. it's way cheaper than the steelbox
Wow, they're moving fast. I didn't even know about the M series coming out.
@@SoundToxin yeah, they also announced 2 more series, one like the G but low profile and another one that's injection molded. having access to Chinese manufacturers gives them a huge edge
What is the name of the low profile one?
I found your channel again I remember watching your new3ds and 3dsxl video after all these years I can finally subscribe 😂🎉
Hitbox has a new product on the way called combo extension buttons that add a new button attached to an existing button slot.
I recently created my own controler based on my layout on a keyboard. That's exactly what I did.
But I also added two pinky finger buttons.
There's almost zero delay between my reaction and my pressing those buttons, since my thumbs and pinky fingers are constantly resting over their dedicated buttons
are u gonna review the haute42
hi regarding the extra L3 & R3 buttons.... what is the best place for them down like in this video or above the action buttons i mean above square & triangle add extra L3 & R3 ? what is the best place for them .
I'll always find some use for it even if something better comes along later.
why would you want to remap movement keys on a hitbox???
I like my pinky to have a button on my left hand, so I move my movement buttons over to the right 1 button, and use the A button as my right dpad button. My pinky button becomes a shift modifier under which I can remap the entire layout to other functions. It feels perfectly natural to play this way, and I don't use the W button for up anyways, so I use that as a Home button. I remap buttons 1234 to the top buttons on the right hand, to emulate the feel of the JKL; keys on a keyboard. The lesser used buttons R/L/RB/LB are the bottom row, but of course, every game is different and I have custom layouts (and custom sticks) for various games

Omg, I may consider this, but I have bought Kitsune a few days ago
i'm so happy that they're tailoring all these new leverless game controllers to people with tinier hands :D
I know it sucks for most people, but for me, smaller is much more comfortable, and I like the pricepoint as well. Too bad it's sold out atm.
I never use my flatbox on my lap, but if I did, I'd likely put one of my giant stuffed animals or a pillow on my lap before resting the controller on top for better posture.
Where can I find art for this controller? Your review convinced me and so far so good. It's my first leverless but I'm picking it up pretty quickly
since when NihongoGamer become a fighting game controler channel. I miss his old coffee talk video. Now I wonder how many control he has in his collection. Probably have enough to open a controller museum.
Check the links in the description. Separated my topics because fighting game fans were being served videos not relevant to them and talk video fans were skipping the controller videos. It’s easier and feels better for me this way :)
I mod my pxn putting two extra bottons 😂 install an hori ps4 controller motherboard into it. I just need an brook usb 🎉 . I work like a charm
Man Your reviews are nice but you need to make a top 5 now. It's the end of the year, some people are going to buy something and a top 5 would be helpful. By the way did you see the haute42? they even have a aluminum version coming. Would love to see a review of that baby.
Thank you very much.
sorry for noob question but I dunno how to google it. Or just throw away stick and buy buttons controller?
start by practicing hadoken motion, then when you can do it consistently, try doubling for super
Try doing it on a keyboard, they're trivially easy to do with your index and middle finger
WTF 138 DOLLARS!? YO THATS NOT BAD at least for the ones that I've seen.
Haute42 review, when?
maybe it's just me bcs i nver had a console and mainly played mugen games on pc but surprisingly good ol keyboard works for me on fighting games
Any chance you will be doing review of the Haute42 series of leverless controllers?
Nice review :) This controller looks good but the fact that it is so small and not PS5 compatible is a "deal breaker" for me. ;)
I honestly didn't even know what turbo did
GP2040-CE doing work.
I would be interested, but I feel like it might be to small for my hands.
Btw did you had to put it together by yourself?
On their Homepage there is a video for their Keyboard, where the person had to put the keyboard together themselves.
It came fully assembled. I put the art work and plastic cover on myself but it’s not required if you’re fine with just the plain metal
Flatbox wave is nice but patiently waiting for it to end, Some of us actually like actual buttons and just just switches with caps on them :/
Have you tried the Haute 42s?
It is very similar to the Haute42 pads, have you used those?
sadly i cant get my hands on this controller for the life of me T_T truly wish the states had local shops that made stuff like this
Good luck clearing that with EVO.
Must have missed it, what are buttons like? Are they switch based keys? or domes?
Is this a rebranded/reshelled Haute Pad?
Review the slab mini please!
I just purchased this and was wondering if you could share a link to the specific brook wingman converter that will work for ps5?
I'm a really big fan of Granblue Fantasy, and I noticed on their website there wasn't an option to get a Granblue Fantasy version of their controller. How did you do it?
Nice, i have one setup just like that. Its awesome!
When are goin to review haute42 controller?
Can you review the dual sense edge
Which board is it using? Is the software rp-2040 based? If yes, I would love to have this HID KBD option in my future leverless build
I really want a leverless controller but why are they so hard to find? And if I do actually find some they are so expensive...
Turbo would be great for shmups
these types of controllers are not even marketed in eastern europe where i'm from , i can't buy them even if i wanted to and i definitely don't want to order directly from their website and wait god knows how long for the shipment across the planet , i'm waiting for 8bitdo to manufacture one of these things so i can buy it from my local online store, i'm a big fan of 8bitdo
Has anybody noticed a crack on the screen or it's just me? I haven't heard anything from the Nihongo gamer mentioned about what happened to the screen in the video lol
Miss the while making coffee videos
Theyre sold out on the steel box, sad days
This looks like a fun controller. Hopefully I can buy one before they turn into junk food arcade
A keycontroller?
How do you get it to work with a ps5 ?
Tournament legal??
So it was a gift?!
The inclusion of a turbo button would make this not tournament legal wouldn't it?
Turbo buttons are on lots of tournament legal controllers. You just shouldn’t activate it.
no link to the controller?
I started on keyboard before leverless. It's not the same.
Whats the weight of this controller in grams/kilograms?
you can get the same thing by Haute 42 is alot better and £30 shipped to UK. exactly the same!!!
The title makes me laugh
can i use this on tekken 8
watching this with adblocker
Hi bruh pad player here, which dpad do you recommend for tekken i used to play it using the vita as a controller, but now every time i use other controllers i end up hating them i think the vita dpad has forever ruined other controllers for me i ned halp
Sucks it doesn't work on PS5, makes it useless to me
Nothing works on PS5, it's a locked platform, at that point just buy an adapter because when you're buying a playstation licensed controller you keep paying a tax to SONY, at least the adaptor is paid only once although expensive
Would this work on pstv/psvita?
Probably on vita tv,
@@kuroinova2056 Cool! Thanks for the anwser :) i might have look into it

look up "steelbox controller"
for a gp2040 based controller, that's an insane price, i just got a similar controller, same functions, just without the l3 and r3 buttons below, they're on the top with the setting buttons, and it costed me just like $30

Can you please cover what would be best for tekken 8 thanks
i dont know how much longer i can continue to play fighting games for knowing nearly every person out their is looking for a controller to use to make them better destroying the spirit of the game. screwing up directional inputs is a part of the genre and keyboards and controllers like that ruin the spirit of the game and make it 10x harder and difficult for any one using a stick or a pad and it just sucks. every time i see someone Korean back dash to the end of the screen in like 2 seconds i take a deep sigh and go fckn hit box... then i end up just standing their while they side step and Korean back dash wave dashing all around the place for 2 rounds and think to my self i would be physically dead if i did that for that long on a stick. were as on a keyboard or a hitbox your hitting 3-4 buttons with basically 0 effort. its going to get to the point were you have a hitbox with 60 buttons on it made for a specific character with lines of combos sett in the button configuration so all you will have to do is pick a line of buttons press them all in a line to lay out a massive instant kill combo. we at least need rules and regulation in the competitive lvls
You're exaggerating. Hitbox is just a niche controller and is in no way popular enough to be used by most people. Most that will buy the games would be using a gamepad (or a PC keyboard if they're on PC and have no pad). Hitbox is only used primarily if you're on at least semi high to high level play.
@@ZX3000GT1 i guess your a hitbox or keyboard user trying to justify a legitimate reason for using a controller that literally skips inputs because the game was designed around sticks and controllers were you cannot press socd.
@@ZX3000GT1 why do you think capcom pro tour banned specific hitboxes ? wen capcom finally understands what ive been saying i would not be surprised if hitbox and keyboard are banned entirely from a professional setting. as i said you literally skip an input on keyboard or hitbox to do a hadoken or wave dash. its an unfair advantage. separate the control types in tournaments or ban lever less completely pretty simple.
@@roastytoasty8559Capcom only banned controllers that didn't conform to the specific SOCD rules. The rules are very clear about what is allowed and what isn't. You are allowed directional buttons as long as SOCD is neutral for U+D and L+R. And you are allowed the extra buttons - the game let's you map them to all of these macros of course.
@@ZX3000GT1 its not niche i see thousands of comments of people saying i bought one or their going 2.
can I have your Razor Kitsune Since Your Gonna Use The Steelbox?
I have seen your reviews on this controller and the one on the 8Bitdo M30, I do not understand why you place this controller on your table, and on the M30 you persisted to put it on your lap, even though the M30 is clearly designed to be held by both hands, it is strange...
My controller has 104 buttons
I like haptic feedback. I hope they make a leverless pad with them.
The PS5 has been out for 3 years now and they're still making these incompatible to it.
PS5 compatibility costs a lot and a large percentage of users will never use a PS5.
@@IcyTorment There's actually a company making very affordable leverless controllers that are compatible. Thankfully
