Cannot thank you enough for covering the valet lock at the end of the video. Watched 5 videos before this one that were a waste of time. Bought the car used for my wife and am not familiar with it. Trunk full of groceries and apparently when I was feeling around for trunk release button in the glove box in the dark accidentally locked it. Ice cream melted but everything else saved- thank you!!!
Very welcome!
Thank you so much! At the end of the video you talked about that switch in mine was accidentally clicked to lock! My trunk is completely full so I wasn’t able to crawl through the backseat. You save me man!
No problem! Glad to help!

DiY for f10 and If you don't have a starter or anything like that, I used my power drill battery. I put a regular cable on negative and one on positive, then positive to red in car and negative to a screw for grown, worked like a charm!
While we don't support this, if it works, it works... But we didn't say that...

I'm unbelievably frustrated at BMW for this design flaw. Vehicle was in accident, pyroswitch blew and battery went dead. Can't jump-start it. Key obviously doesn't work. Can't get into the trunk through the back seat, there is no way to pull down the middle seat. Battery is in the trunk and there is litterally no way to gain access that I can find, the emergency key doesn't have a slot in the trunk, no physical button in the car to release the trunk, everything is electronic and with the battery dead and in the trunk this makes life extremely difficult, I am shocked BMW came up with this idiotic design. I basically have a 2 ton paperweight.
I’m in the same boat!!! How in the hell do you open it??
Have you opened yet???
@@rosamunoz3743 Yeah I ended up using a angle grinder to cut a hole in the middle of the back seat. Folded down the middle seat, snapped off the cover plastic, cut a 4 inch square hole on 3 sides in the metal back plate, bent it in, and manually released the boot catch from inside the boot. Put it back best I could, hardly notice its been cut but still absolute joke. Tried everything else, completely removed the back seats and everything, tried to use a fibre optic camera and metal wire and hook to release the catch but couldnt do it, so in the end just angle grinded out of frustration really. BMW said they could fix it but would have wanted £2,000 no doubt.
Could be worst I have a m4gts at my work that is still brand new untitled that has sat in the show room for 3 years without starting or moving they finally decided to try and start it and the battery is to dead to jump it has not back seat latch and no manual key home
@@jakekorach7591 as long as the piroswitch hasn't blown you should be able to use a jump starter kit on the terminal under the hood, u can trickle some charge to the battery in the trunk which should be enough to pop the trunk and replace the dead battery. Also replace the battery in the key just to make sure its not that.
@@NichoTBE yeah we had to get new keys made the originals disappeared over the years we tried jumping it and we couldn't get anything out of it for a minute after about 15 minutes we were finally able to get the trunk open
Take the speaker out behind rear passenger head rest feel about and pull seat release this will drop seat, enabling you to get in boot. This works for bmw 1 series coupe 2011. I had fully disconnect the battery and the boot got shut by mistake and found this the easiest way to get in
Hello! have you removed the left or right speaker? how did you manage to unlock the seat? pulling the black cable?

@@bimmer-tech okay but what happens if the doors are locked? And the car obviously isn’t running??? I locked my keys in the trunk

Wow!! I’ve been riding around for three weeks unable to getting into my trunk, but was going out of town and needed to figure out how to get back in there. Never paid attention to the valet switch in the glove box. 🤦🏽♀️ That worked!
Super happy the video was helpful for you! Cheers!
You just saved my life with the lock in the glove box! My trunk's been locked for a few months and I had no idea why. There's nothing in there so I was like screw it🥴Now a brake light went out and I was freaking out. Turns out somehow, someway that switch got locked. Thanks for making a common sense video as opposed to going worst case scenario!!
Glad to know it helped :D
Cheers!
Keys locked in trunk......For buttons that don't work without power......Simply gain access to the wires behind the button, then, using your car battery or even a screw gun battery. Take a single wire, attach it to the positive side of the battery (red side) with tape, then attach the other end of the wire to either wire on the button, wala your trunk will pop open. I use to work for AAA, we did this trick all the time. Takes about 5mins.
then how come the aaa guy i called yesterday was fking useless
@@gabrielchristiansen3858 LOL, no one said ALL aaa guys are smart,
Thank you but I don't understand what button you need to gain access to
so the boost under the hod will still work if the battery is disconnected in the trunk at the terminal (but still plugged din)?

How to open Prius trunk with no power?
@@평정심-j8i soo for anyone who does this I wanna point out some obvious steps soo you don't end up in my position and also some helpful solutions. If your battery is disconnected you will not be able to jump your car. I used a torx 20 and removed the two bolts holding backseat up then maneuvered around seat belt completely removing upper section of backseat. To prevent future issue until battery is installed get a towel stick it within the key latch so trunk does not fully close
Well this is fun. British speck car so no rear folding seats, battery flat, jump leads are in the back under the floor
You guys make it seem easy but don't explain the hard part what about if your battery is dead and you cannot get in the car the trunk is closed the doors are closed the hood is closed everything is closed in the key doesn't work to open the door what you should do once you explain that better that's easy you have your door open your open your hood you jump the car that's easy way but what about when the car is shut completely so you cannot get an in this is when you have to explain to people I do not see this in RUclips
Love the name of the channel! You _almost_ saved me, but the opening is too small to even fit my head in. Plus, there's the canvas-like "bag" in the way of me seeing into the trunk.
Just add the jump leads , even if the battery is not connected it will still send power enough to open the boot .
Very good video, but what if you have a battery in the boot and can’t use a jumpstart pack?
Then you may want to take a look at our blog post for other tips: www.bimmer-tech.net/blog/item/52-howtosolveautomatictailgateproblems or search for other solutions on Bimmernav or Bimmerfest forums.
Let's talk about bmw z4 E89 trunk:) How can one open it when the battery is dead? Should an attempt of jump-start of that dead battery open the trunk? Thankful to everyone for any useful suggestion
if you jump start the car, the alternator will charge the battery a bit, so you'll be able to open the trunk :)
the last thing you said saved me thank you
Glad it helped!
Question: 2017 320i has neither of the first 2 options, and the third option doesnt work. This is after a front end collision with airbag deploy...any ideas?
maybe some kind of wiring issue after the collision happened?
The valet guy can still take your valuables by taking down the rear seat and climbing through like you did?
Theoretically, but they would have to gain access to the inside of the car first. Please note that the Rear seat can be opened like that only from the inside.
I accidentally closed the trunk turning the key counterclockwise so, was left horizontally and the car Toyota Corolla 1998 1.8L at that moment had no power due to starter smoking and negative connector melted. Cannot fold backrest seat of 60/driver/40/passenger and lever does not work. Tomorrow will try again, this time the master key in ignition to ON and will lift the lever inside instead of running out to use the other key and try to open.
Cracking video, heres my problem I got a 2010 plate E93, batteries completely dead no joy with the terminals under the hood, how do I get into the trunk to get acces to the battery??
Clifford, Just like Dylan you will need to open the car with the key blade and later release the center section of the rear seats 0:50

Hello, I disconnected battery on e92 with no keyhole. Closed trunk and the emergency trunk latch is broken/ missing. What do I do?
That’s a tough one. Please see this post, might be of help:

Hi Dylan, Thanks for the video. So by only connecting the wires to another car is not enough, the other car still need to be turn on? Because i connect my car to an external battery and another car's battery without start the engine, neither works. Am i missing the last step of starting the other cars engine? Thank you!
After pulling it how do you get that latch to re tighten and not stay pulled
The emergency release latch should tighten on its own. If it didn’t you can try locking the lock manually with a screwdriver to see if the latch retightens. If it doesn’t please visit local dealership/car repair shop to get it checked.
@@bimmer-tech mine doesnt have an emergency latch? And i took the battery out to have it tested. Now i cant put the battery back in. Trying to put in through the back seat is nearly impossible
I have a base model 2010 328i convertible. Installed a new battery EXACTLY as another video instructed. Had power for about a minute, shut the trunk to start it, then it died and car went totally silent.
My trunk release is on the drivers side, and nothing works. Cant get through the backseat. When I try jumping it, nothing, remains silent and not enough juice to open the trunk with 2 different fobs.

Anyone know how to get into the boot of a 4 series. Changed my indicator wires and lid closed before connecting back into the socket.
Can't you open it from inside?
Hi! I had my battery replaced and realized that I cannot get to the trunk (without a battery). Can you put a charge on a car without a battery just to get the trunk opened?
That's possible, but do not recommend that.
Great thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Cheers!
This video is amazing
I have a 2006 bmw 530i and it doesnt have the latch in the backseat and the key doesn't work to manually open it. I've tried everything. I've used the button on the key, button in the car, and using the key in the keyhole. Any suggestions?
If there is no power at all in the trunk but you’re able to open the trunk, please try using a jumpbox or ask someone to jumpstart your car using the jumper wires. If you cannot open the trunk even if there is power in the car then perhaps the trunk lock is jammed and in that case it’d be best to get a specialist from BMW dealership or any car repair shop specializing in BMWs to take a look at it.
hey I'm stuck tried everything you suggest but I can't just pull down my center seat and crawl through it's a 2010 BMW 528i
Hi, did you try the second option with the jump box or the jumper cables? Maybe it would be easier.
What happens if your battery is dead and the doors are shut and locked? Do you have to break a window?
Don't you have a metal key to open?
I have a 328i 2011 and it doesn't have the back seat latch to get access inside the trunk,, there's NO button and has a metal plate blocking access
So the rear seats doesn't go down or you don't have the safety latch?
@@bimmer-tech nope.... look it up 328i 2011 X-DRIVE , however I do see a emergency pull latch when I open the trunk but once I close it and go to the back seat to try find a button or something to bring the back seats its no where to be found.. so my question why they added a emergency latch if I can't get access from the back seat to do down.... and it has a metal plate in the same area how you went in based on this video.... any suggestion that I don't know about (I saw video that a guy had to take out the back seat and that was a hasselle

U just got subscribe some man
I have a customer who locked his keys in the trunk & he doesn't have an armrest in backrest. Behind the seat is just a big metal plate.
Have u managed to open it anyways?
This is truly a horrible and inconvenient design. I don’t care how fancy your brand is or what year it is, keys should be in every vehicle.
Key production is a massive cost for manufacturers, so no wonder they try to cut it
Hello, what can I do if I just disconnect the ground cable from the battery in the trunk and it closes, can I still do the last procedure with another battery and jumper cables? I ask because is the red cable still connected to the battery in the trunk so u dont knkw if i can have issues somebody can help me is bmw m8 coupe i dont find the way to open 😢
Hello, yes you can still do the the last procedure using an external power source and jumper cables, connect to the jump start terminals under the hood and once connected, the vehicle should have enough power to operate the electronic trunk release button, allowing you to open the trunk.
Number 3 worked for me, I think my son messed with the button lol

Thank you for this video. I own a BMW G20 since 2019 but recently, when I was driving I noticed that the trunk opened spontaneusly. How did it happen? why? When this trunk was not properly closed, it just opened all the way. But in this case, the trunk was closed and it opened one minute after I start driving. Is there any button or control in the car cabin that I may have activated accidentally? I am thankfull in advance for your answer.
There is a button on the driver’s door, close to the storage pocket that opens the trunk when pressed so you might’ve accidentally pressed it when driving. However, if the issue seems to be reoccuring, I’d suggest visiting the dealership or any car repair shop specializing in BMWs to get it checked.
@@bimmer-tech Thank you very much for your answer. It is a good point to check. Regards.
What a legendary video 👍. I'm a first year apprentice vehicle technician and was working on a 730e with my mentor. The boot wouldn't open at all and know one knew what to do. Until I watched this video, I found out that the whole reason was due to the valet switch being on the lock position. 😜. Thanks👍👍

@@bimmer-tech do you know if BMW have a way of fixing this?

How do you get into the trunk of a 320D ? Have a flat battery can't open the bonnet and can't get into the boot 🤔
The bonnet release is fully mechanical, so it shouldn't stop opening just because the battery is down. It sounds like that's the problem you really need to address.
It's possible the release cable is broken or there's a snag somewhere in the mechanism. A mechanic should be able to figure that out for you and replace any broken or damaged parts, if necessary.
To at least get yourself moving, you should be able to pop out the front kidney grille (it's only clipped into place) to gain access to the bonnet lock and manually unlock it. Then you'll be able to charge up the battery. Good luck!
@@bimmer-tech thank you my son m managed to open its all sorted now thank you. It's silly that you can't enter the boot through the inside of the car though 🙄
What about on the 4 series cabriolet ?
There might be a keyhole on the trunk lid to insert your keyfob into and open it this way. To check if that’s possible, please refer to the owner’s manual. If you’re able to open the hood, you might be able to get the power running from the car jumper device or from another car and open the trunk this way.
Fyi, trunk latches are only on us version
true that - it's the US law :)
How do you open the trunk with the key in it? No spare key available. Thanks. It’s for a 2012 520
I’m afraid you will have to either have the car towed to a BMW service or have a locksmith break in.
And this work on all bmw ( X5 2011)
It works on mostly all BMWs, however, not all of them can access the trunk through the back seats but for sure you can use the second method with the external power from either a jump box or another car and jumper cables 1:16 this one applies to any BMW.
How do you open if no latch on 2003
