Bruuuhhhhhh you just saved me!!! I couldn't get in my car for nothing. Tried to find so many videos and nothing then late at night this video popped up ...MY LORD! thanks bro!!!
This is the first comment I've left on a mechanical RUclips video. You saved my butt, thank you so much for this information I would have been completely dead in the water
Thank you!!! I have a 2012 640I.. I need a new battery... I haven't cranked the car in four months.. It's been raining in North Carolina..I also broke the top to my convertible.. it has been manually closed. Everything it rains.. my back seat floor board is covered with a pool of water..I needed to get in their..to access the damage.. my key would make a noise but the car didn't respond. I found you video.. I unlocked me car using the key...mind you I never knew That their was a key to it..sat inside and the trunk still wouldn't open.. I know the battery is located in the back and felt hopeless..but the front would still open.. I jumped the car off from the front. Opened the truck..thank you
So I'm replacing the oil engine hoses and drive belt. My dad and I disconnected the battery and closed the trunk 😅 today we wanted to reconnect the battery but could not open up the trunk because no power. I used the key from the fob on the trunk but still it didn't open. I watched this video, I was able to pop the trunk by opening the middle of the back seat. The latch for the trunk to pull was wayyyy too far for me to reach and I don't fit through the small space in the middle soooo I used a longggg flat head and was able to push the latch for the back seat to come down. I had to crawl to the trunk to reach the latch and boooom it opened. Thanks for the video. If anyone else has questions I can post a video of how I was able to open mine. I have a 2009 535i xdrive

I pulled the battery out and left it in my trunk and left it in there to to get a new one in the morning, I’ve tried the cable option, but didn’t work cause battery is no longer connected. Now the backseat option I tried, but there’s this 3rd flap plastic flap in there that covers it avoiding me from getting into trunk. Can this be removed?
No, no and no again, mine has a plastic plate with 3 vertical splits, I have located the cable that is hide by the plastic plate but the cable is rooted. Any suggestions please as this mechanism is like none I've seen on youtube. The plastic plate is a half circle with the top half cut off, it has plastic clamps that are easily dislodged however still cannot remove the plate, any tips would be very much appreciated 😢

@@motorcarnut well it didn't work. The booster didn't let me choose the "12V AGM/Gel)" option because it would only recognize it as a 6V battery (it was reading 5V from my battery). I'll try with jump-starting it with a running car.
My girlfriend's 2019 330i xdrive didn't have a key insert in the rear. Had to squeeze between back seat to pull that lever. How dumb of a design for an overpriced non M car.
There's no key hole on the outside trunk. Car was parked on a one lane driveway so couldn't get a car to jump the front. Plus don't have a portable jumper. They could had just kept the trunk mechanical instead of electrical. What were they thinking especially battery is in the rear.
Man my 2014 328i does not have that option between the seats. And I tried jumping it with another vehicle and the trunk still won’t open. Battery is dead
If you jump the vehicle with another, did you try the truck release button too? Should open unless your trunk wiring or mechanism is not working. Also leave the vehicle charge for a while if its totally a dead battery.
Hello, what can I do if I just disconnect the ground cable from the battery in the trunk and it closes, can I still do the last procedure with another battery and jumper cables? Because the red cable is still connected to the battery in the trunk that why my concern can u confirm o somebody help me please
We have a 2011 550i. Key fob battery is good but valet key, held inside, broke in the past & I cannot locate it. Car is locked. Car battery needs a jump to run. Any ideas on what I can do??
I’m not sure what’s going on? You need a factory main key fob for the car to start. If the battery needs a jump to start it should be replaced first. These cars rely heavily on a good strong battery.
@@motorcarnut thanks for the reply) The car battery is fairly new but it’s been parked for a while. No worries. I’m calling a locksmith 2moro. Thanks again.
I lost my keys to my 2004 BMW 325i. After looking everywhere I went back and tried the doors and they popped open. Still no keys. I believe they may be in trunk because the doors opened. Sorry to hear that but something must of been wrong with your electrical system because I jump vehicles all the time that way. This information is from BMW as well.
We have a 2011 328i. There’s no trunk key hole, no rear seat access, and we tried using jumper cables on the spots you suggested. Nothing happened. Any suggestions about what could be wrong? I’m desperate. :(
@@motorcarnut Thanks for replying! :) My husband was able to use a battery and paperclips and go under the glovebox to open the trunk. There had been no battery bc we took it to get it checked. I really don’t want to have to get it towed to a shop if I can help it…
I have a 2010 328i and had the battery in my truck when the grandkid slammed the trunk on the BMW. With no battery hooked up the jumper cable method does not work.
I have an 07 328i that has a flat battery i need to replace. Do you recommend me leaving the car unlocked after removing the bad battery ? I want the same battery specs but not sure I’ll get it done the same day if they don’t have the specific battery I need… I’m scared ill lock myself out by locking up the car after removing the battery.
If you’re not worried about anybody messing with your car then leave it unlocked to be certain. But the car can be energized the way I showed in the video without any battery in the trunk.
@@motorcarnut I hope you are 100% correct because I've been locked out of my trunk for 2 days after putting in my starter breaking in a mission hose looks like a (Y) I am going for the trunk please tell me that this will work without the battery being connected in the trunk I have the positive on but not the negative please let this be
He is absolutely correct I let mention . I was replacing starter with the negative battery terminal disconnected I was going crazy and I was about to pull the back seat then I stumble across the I was amazed to see that the man was telling 100% truth Yes you can unlock your trunk from popping the hood and connecting at the jumping cable terminals under-the-hood to release your trunk even when it's disconnected
I have a parasitic drain, and i jumped my BMW from the front to be able to open the trunk; however, i cannot open it with the key, only the button near the driver's door. Does this mean the lock/switch is bad or stuck and could that cause my battery to drain overnight? Also, not only does the key not work to open the trunk but the buttons on the trunk don't work either.
If you can open the trunk with at least one button I would think the latch electronics are fine but could be the control module and if its bad can cause a parasitic draw.
Most BMWs have power and ground lugs in the engine compartment like I explain in the video as long as you didn’t take the battery terminals apart just unhooked them from the battery posts it should power up the vehicle. There doesn’t even have to be a battery in the vehicle as long as you didn’t mess with the electrical connections on the battery terminals
I question if the "jump start" method (using the positive/red terminal under the hood combined with a ground) will work if there is no battery in the car. I believe the BMW's electrical system requires a battery to be installed in order to complete the circuit which energizes the accessories. I am not saying the battery must have any juice....just that it be hooked up so that when you employ the jump start technique the circuit is completed/closed and the trunk opener will work. By my theory, you also can not jump start a BMW is there is not a battery installed/properly connected. I base my theory on recent practical experience....my 2007 Z4M battery would not hold a charge/five years old.....I remove and close trunk.....go purchase new battery....come home ready to install.....opps. Trunk is locked and no key hole. I raise the hood and hook up jump starter box....I knew I was in trouble when the interior lights did not come on! My car is a coupe so I was eventually able to actuate the manual release "rip cord" to open the trunk. If I had not been able to do that......I would not be writing this post; I would still be trying to figure out how to open the trunk. Lesson learned: don't fully close trunk after removing battery.
@@motorcarnut that's what I figured cars been sitting for about year due to engine problems and finally got a chance to work on it when I tried to unlock it with the key it turns in the tumbler but doesn't do anything
I do have the key, the truck have some issues I wasn't able to repair, so the truck literally sat for over a year. It couldn't move, now I am able to repair and now it is totally dead. The will go in and it will not bulge at all. The truck dead dead.
@GOOD_VIBES-ONLY doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve done it many times. If you have the key then no anti theft will be activated. It’s a vehicle not Fort Knox
@@motorcarnut This also doesn't work for me? e90: They broken in and stole the battery, connecting another battery via the front jump tabs did nothing, ie car still electrically dead. Advice?
@@motorcarnut spot on, turns out there are 2 red high current wires coming from the positive terminal joint under a red plate, if they become disconnected, ie the two red wire aren't electrically joint there is nothing to do via the jump tabs to open the boot/trunk, the only way left is to cut a hole behind the seat or inject 12V into the loom to unlock the solenoid.
No, certainly on an F10 model none of these work. The simple and only answer is to remove the rear seat. Yank up the seat base and remove it. Then, unbolt the three bolts holding the seat rear in place. You can then access the battery.
@@motorcarnut hey, yep apologies seems I misunderstood. Yes, your right you can start it 👍. The issue I had was my jump starter doesn't have an override button. So had to buy a new one and it worked. Thanks for your video, much appreciated. Liked and Subscribed 👍
They dropped a bmw6401. Convertible , off here in the yard. I know in my heart that it is a gift thank Gigi. But up against these fellas who lie an claim the vehicle I even goty li0 busted attempting to enable it. It's going to be a difficult situation for me to get this to the wrightfull recipient. And they need it badly. The 0ower was on when I opened the door. The radio and screen was in working order but a push-start with no fob uelp me get it going to come to their aid in a timely manner. I would be forever endeaded. Thanks. Kcb
My wife has a 2015 bmw x1 XDRIVE 28i, in my opinion it's a complete pos...constantly needs repairs I'm sick of it. All but the driver door will open and shut correctly. If you open the other doors they will not shut, then you have to spend time smacking the door around the actuators with a ball peen hammer to get them to finally close. Now the trunk won't open, the car has a brand new battery and positive cable due to it failing a few months after getting it form the dealer. The key fob won't charge at all when put in the ignition during the drive cycles. She can't unlock or lock the car with the fob, or start it without putting the fob in the slot. Idk what else to do at this point. She's still making payments on it, and it's a pain to put our child in the car seat when you can't open 3 or the 4 doors. We have to roll the window down, and buckle her in that way.
Well definitely sounds like electrical problems to me, and probably from the battery and cable change. All the codes in the entire car should be cleared then re scanned and see what comes up then. Because anything that is not working should set a code so it can be diagnosed from there.
Eventually , I just changed the battery. #1 and 2 didnt work. I dont have a jumper cable for #3 lol, because it's in the trunk. I just want to say that this was really2 shoddy engineering from bmw. It really makes it hard to do things with this car.
I took my battery out of the car to charge it because im staying at a hotel and running a power cable out to a battery charger wasn't an option. I just tried to pop my trunk to install my battery but without power that didn't work. I don't own jumper cables, if I did they'd probably be on the trunk anyways. But I do keep a jump box in the glove box and its fully charged. So I hook that bad boy up and.....NOTHING. No door open chime. No interior lights, nothing. It was like the car was completely deceased. I checked the jump box and the green ready light and all four blue charged lights were on showing fully charged but again I try. I put my foot on the break and pushed the button. No dash lights came on or anything else for that matter. I can't go thru the back seat because my car doesn't have that door that folds down allowing access to the trunks interior. If it did, my trunk is completely empty so I doubt I'd have any trouble getting to the hand pull cord to open from the inside. Anyone else have any ideas ? Im hoping I can find someone with jumper cables that we can hookup under the hood and get enough power to open the trunk. Im not sure ab this working since the jump box being fully charged and the green light showing it was ready to go and it didn't do anything at all. Anyone with any ideas here ? Thanks.
2011 328i battery isn’t in the trunk I closed it as I went to get a replacement, I don’t have a hole to squeeze through, no key hole in the back, and jumping doesn’t help. I’m out of options and extremely frustrated would love to hear some advice

Thank you bro 😎 open up my trunk 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Glad to help! Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, but if the battery is disconnected, and the trunk is locked, and there is a big plate between the seats. Then what?
Most BMWs have power and ground lugs in the engine compartment like I explain in the video as long as you didn’t take the battery terminals apart just unhooked them from the battery posts it should power up the vehicle. There doesn’t even have to be a battery in the vehicle as long as you didn’t mess with the electrical connections on the battery terminals
Thank you saved my ass
No problem!
Does anyone here know how to close it from the inside? The button works to open but not close ?
What are you trying to do exactly?
I never had a problem with opening the trunk with no battery using the front lugs. Although I never tried it on vehicles lower than 2011.
I also found an ingenious solution. Don’t ever buy a BMW. 😂😂😂
Lol, their good vehicles but just like any other manufacturer they have their own problems as well.
What if the battery is dead and the key doesnt pop the lock on the door?
Then you need a locksmith. Why wouldn’t the physical key open the door?
@@motorcarnut that's what I figured cars been sitting for about year due to engine problems and finally got a chance to work on it when I tried to unlock it with the key it turns in the tumbler but doesn't do anything
I do have the key, the truck have some issues I wasn't able to repair, so the truck literally sat for over a year. It couldn't move, now I am able to repair and now it is totally dead. The will go in and it will not bulge at all. The truck dead dead.
Just jump it from the power lugs under the hood, should open the trunk that way
If it’s NO BATTERY JUMPING THE FRONT WONT WORK TRUST ME
Trust you? It will and it does. I’m not asking I’m teaching. If yours doesn’t you have bigger issues than just a battery problem.
I have a 2023 it WONT WORK I CALLED DEALERSHIP AND A MECHANIC THEY WONT OPEN AT ALL WHEN BATTERY GO DEAD ANTI THEFT KICKS IN.
@GOOD_VIBES-ONLY doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve done it many times. If you have the key then no anti theft will be activated. It’s a vehicle not Fort Knox
Nothing works. I can not get the terminals to get any contact. I have tried everything. I will never buy another BMW. How stupid are they?
Not one of those works? You may have a short somewhere which is not common at all
I agree
The manual key that clicks out the fob is how I got in my 2010 bmw 750 li
Yep, that’s one of the ways
I tried this and it did not work, still lock out
Then you probably have other issues.
I tried the jump start method it didn’t work
This is not the jump start the engine, only to get into the trunk.
@@motorcarnut This also doesn't work for me? e90: They broken in and stole the battery, connecting another battery via the front jump tabs did nothing, ie car still electrically dead. Advice?
Idk, it’s supposed to. Maybe they ripped something out when they broke in?
@@motorcarnut spot on, turns out there are 2 red high current wires coming from the positive terminal joint under a red plate, if they become disconnected, ie the two red wire aren't electrically joint there is nothing to do via the jump tabs to open the boot/trunk, the only way left is to cut a hole behind the seat or inject 12V into the loom to unlock the solenoid.
Yep, that’ll do it.
No, certainly on an F10 model none of these work. The simple and only answer is to remove the rear seat. Yank up the seat base and remove it. Then, unbolt the three bolts holding the seat rear in place. You can then access the battery.
One of those should work unless there is something more than the battery wrong with your vehicle. These tips are from BMW
Yeah none of these methods work on an e90 328i 2011 either
Then something else is going on with your car
What if the car is totally dead you can not open at all.
What year and model do you have?
@@motorcarnut 2008
What model?
@@motorcarnut BMWx5
I believe that vehicle has an external key slot. You don’t have the key?
The boot will not open if you try to jump start without a battery inside nor will any electronics come on. Bit of misinformation there.
Information is accurate or it wouldn’t be on my channel. Either your car has problems or you’re not paying attention
@@motorcarnut hey, yep apologies seems I misunderstood. Yes, your right you can start it 👍. The issue I had was my jump starter doesn't have an override button. So had to buy a new one and it worked. Thanks for your video, much appreciated. Liked and Subscribed 👍
Thank you! Very much appreciated! Glad you got it opened!
Thanks. Kcb
Do you have the key for the car?
If you had jumper cables you can open the trunk by hooking up to the 2 positive and negative lugs in the engine compartment.
Thanks.
You'll need to connect the jump box directly to the battery terminals under the hood to have enough power to open the trunk.
BMW X5
.
Not even a battery in the truck... wtf no way yes way
Lol. Yes!
Well those didn't work 😕
Probably something wrong with your vehicle then
So much for German engineering, bmw is terrible to not have a way to open the truck with a key, makes zero sense.
More and more manufacturers don’t want owners fixing their own vehicles, that’s where I come in :-)
Thanks you ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks again! LOL!
2011 328i battery isn’t in the trunk I closed it as I went to get a replacement, I don’t have a hole to squeeze through, no key hole in the back, and jumping doesn’t help. I’m out of options and extremely frustrated would love to hear some advice
What about jumping the lugs under the hood? Doesn’t need battery hooked up
I have the same car and I just bought a new battery while I’m locked out so hopefully I can do this method with the new battery?
@reezyc23 yes you can
It didn’t work for me :/
You tried all three? And even if the old battery is not in the trunk as long as you didn’t take the terminals apart and jump the car from the engine compartment it should work
I tried with jump starter with no car battery did not work at all:/
If you took apart the electronics that connect to the battery it will not work. But if you just disconnected the battery for removal it should work.
@@motorcarnut oh shit I will have to crawl in there to connect the battery😩 well will be fun I never changed done it before
