    I don’t jump start other cars from a BMW, period. Great video. I have an F30, an E37, and an E89. Guys, replace your BMW battery before you think you need to. It’s essential to have a good battery or it will lead to a host of other problems.

    Surprised not to see big Achtung! posted in the area of the battery.
    Battery posts up front in the engine bay super handy for connecting smart charger too 👍🏻
    I do this nightly and I got 10 years life on my previous BMW battery.

      This isn’t the original BMW battery, yeah batteries should last forever if you drive your car regularly and don’t let it dip below the required level 👌🏼

    On an e46 the negative jump terminal is on the same side as the red jump terminal but under that black plastic cover you see between the windshield and the hood strut.

    I charge by car using a CTEK smart charger, I have previously had a terminal to the positive and then connected to a ground point on the chassis to make sure they the flow is charge is registered by the IBS. I will move the wiring connector to the front now and have them in the engine bay just to be sure. Cheers George.

    I have driven BMWs all my adult life and I did not know this 😱
    Thanks for the heads up and warning! I connected a trickle charger to my X6 because it is only driven over weekends - considered installing it at the battery but fortunately decided to install it at the jump terminals under the bonnet - close call!

      Always have your battery on charge whenever doing any sort of coding or programming

    What if I put jumper cables for 5 minutes while the other car engine is running and the Battery gain power then I remove the jumpers and start the car? Is it still wrong? I've been doing that for a while.

    Why not? I have started it more than 10 times directly from others car battery to mine battery, no problem.

    How about if you want to jump start other car from yours? I’ve heard that then you are supposed to use battery terminals instead under bonnet ones?

      Potentially yes, do not do it. You have terminals in your engine bay for a reason👍🏻

    Any tips on how to get in the trunk when your battery cable comes disconnected and the trunk keyhole doesn’t work anymore to open it also for some reason the previous owners took out the trunk release lever inside the car so now it’s really hard to in the Trunk

      Fine to do, if you use the battery terminals in the engine bay

    opps i tried to jump start from the front it didnt work, so then i moved to back and again it didnt work, so now i will just charge it for a day and hopefully it works
    should i be worried ive fried my modules in the attempt of jump starting it from the back though it didnt jump start as expected?

    Good info! From another video, the guy says never to use jumper cables/another vehicle either as that can blow your modules too but to use one of those battery packs you can get e.g. NOCO GB40 etc. What are your thoughts on that?

      Jump starts are generally fine but a jumper pack / charger is the best for your battery

      Okay I am about to jump start my 05 e53 with a dodge truck . It is minus 38 out right now . Is there anything I need to know before hand ? Ie. Postive then negative on my bmw then negative positive on his

    So is it ok to run a trickle charger to the battery directly? Or should this only be done on the terminals under the hood? I’ve heard there isn’t enough juice with them to get it all the way to the battery from the terminals. Thank you so much man!

    Can you get 12v power from the front of the car ,say to operate a oil extraction pump where u need to connect to the positive and negative terminals or do u have to go in the boot to the battery?

      yes you can and you actually should leave it in the car since you will be charging it through the terminals under the bonnet/hood

      Connect to terminals under the bonnet, not on the battery. Doesn’t really matter which you connect first

    Hi. Iv owned my 6 series for the best part of 5 years now and have just recently heard about not jumpstarting from the battery....and have on occasion had to jumpstart the engine. I have done it for the battery but mostly from the engine compartment . Have a good new battery now.. but what I want to know is if I have caused any damage,,,, what should I look out for, as in any indication that I may have caused some damage. Thanks Rob

      You’d probably have failed modules by now if it done some damage but never do it again

    I didnt know this but i have done this many times before to a few bmw's and had no problems. I have tried jump starting them from the front but found that on a really dead battery & diesel engine wont start from front terminals, You have to jump it direct from battery. I must be lucky but will not take a chance again

      Diesels require more power to start due to the larger crankshafts👍🏻
      Can still be jumpstarted if you have a high powered car to jump from.

    I have just watched this and now feel stupid as ran low on my battery and wouldn't quit start so had to get a jump start did try the front but failed so I did jump it from the back but now worried that I have cooked the car
    How can I check to see if I have damaged anything

      Either should work in theory but from experience the battery will be toast and you’ll need a new one

    My battery died like three weeks ago, my mistake used the radio for 2 hours with the engine off, got jumped started directly to the battery, I didn’t know, now three weeks after I’m having a slow starting car, I’m worried, help me guys!       @@GeorgeAusters I have on order a new water pump and a new thermostat which I will be changing by myself, also ordered the kit from darkside (egr) and doing them all at the same time what do you think? I have disconnected the egr for weeks now and no warning lights as of yet! Couple of thousand miles on!!

    This make absolutely no sense, to me. How could connecting another battery to the BMW battery cause any harm? The car is getting power again at the same point it always receives power.

    Hi George.....I need your kind advise please. I am having a BMW E93 (Built Year 2007) I have nit used the car for nearly 3 months and the battery is dead now. I have jump-started and drove for nearly 1 hour on motorway at the speed of 70mph. Even after that the car battery is not charged and the car is not cranking. But, jump-start works.
    Do you think that I can restore the battery using the battery pools in engine bay? The battery is around 5 / 6 years old.

      Hello any tips on how to get in the trunk my battery came disconnected on my 323i 1999 and the key hole doesn’t work for the trunk and there’s no trunk release lever in side the car it’s been sitting since June now I got it up for sale .

    You have failed to explain exactly why it makes any difference. The cable in the hood area goes directly to the battery... What is the logical reason that it makes any difference.

    What you saying doesn't make sense. the only difference besides increasing the capacity is around a volt more from the other cars alternator and that only with your cars alternator is not ru ning. I call bull shit.
