Hey, all F generations 3 series are turbocharged now, whether you get a 4 cylinder or a 6. I don't have any personal experience with BMW's inline 4 cylinders, but some of them have known timing chain issues. Personally I'd be looking at either a 335i or 340i, both of which have single turbo inline 6's. F30 335i's have really come down in price, especially early model years (2012, 2013).

Great video and explanation of WHY you need to register your battery- many people have roasted their batteries because they didn't know they were supposed to do that. Also, that specific CTEK Battery Charger is a very good one, I have it too. It even comes as an OEM stock part with many higher-end cars, it's a very good investment.
My original bmw battery lasted 8 years. Amazing. Started getting fault codes on various things because of low amps. Dealership wanted to run diagnostics for 2 days to figure out what's going on. I put my foot down and said change the battery first. Clear all codes and then we will see. I was right.
Got my replacement battery from Walmart for $175. It was a 95 Ah and cheaper than anywhere else by $50-60 bucks. Stealership was around $300 not installed.
94RAGM will also fit these cars. Should be a little smaller but there’s *usually* an adjustment for the bracket that holds the battery in place. All you have to do is register the battery as a lower Amp Hour rating. Won’t affect anything as long as it’s registered to the vehicle. Great video yet again man! I’ll never know why they make these batteries so damn heavy! 🤣
Good info, I'd say though if you are careful you can get really good deals on batteries. A little over a year ago the AGM battery in my 2013 Audi allroad was starting to die over a couple of days (It was dated 08/2012. AGM batteries are really impressive). A matching H8 battery from VW/Audi was > $250. I was on the Audizine forums and found out an H8 Champion battery at my PepBoys was $189 (including core charge). Installed it last January, changed the serial number by 1 letter with VCDS, and returned old battery and payed 171 for a brand new AGM battery. I've had no problems. I'd say do your research and find a good matching spec battery with a discount and you'll win big time. I haven't had any problems with my battery besides the few times I've left my OBDeleven plugged in overnight.
In my research, I found that most car batteries (BMW included) are manufactured by only a handful of suppliers, so I have no doubt they are all among equal quality/ longevity. I just had a hard time finding something locally.
I had issues with autozone and oreilly when looking for mine, too. Even the dealer was out so I ended up finding the exact spec replacement by interstate at Costco! Been running strong since
That's interesting, the stock battery in my 340i is 900CCA and manufactured by Banner of Austria (OEM supplier), I'm guessing the slightly higher CCA on mine is because it's a Canadian spec vehicle- although where you are it gets pretty cold too! ❄️
Better idea than overpaying at the stealership: Get an Odyssey AGM battery from FCP Euro. Less expensive, better quality, and FCP extends the warranty to LIFETIME as they do on all parts they sell. Huge win.
Please note folks - The Carly app in fact doesn't do the battery registration. It says it does, but it doesn't. Plenty feedback from tons of users continue to be ignored by Carly.
My e90s battery was replaced about a year ago by previous ownner. I see on the car log was not register any previous replacement, and the battery currently registered is a 90ahm agm while the battery in the trunk is a 95ahm AGm. What would you say i have to do now?

THANK YOU Justin! Your style of presentation is so clean and concise and your calm friendly manner help remove any intimidation doing a DIY sometimes presents. I've always done whatever work I can myself anyway. On your advise I did pick up a BMW battery at a dealer. Also sent for a Carly which I had considered doing for a year anyway for the coding options. I'm heading outside right now so hopefully armed with your insights it will go seamlessly. Appreciate your great instructions!
I was reading info on battery replacement in my 2016 3X F25 BMW and it said that the power can't be interrupted and to use a tool made to be plug in until the battery is installed so that none of the settings or data will be lost. I noticed you didn't mention that and wondered what your thoughts were.
good tuitorial, only thing I'd say is disconnect the negative first then start pulling out stuff and covering the positive. Only way you'd get the old welding arc is going across the terminals... not speaking from experience or anything
I have never understood the fascination with amp hours. I could be completely wrong but your car either starts or does not. Once it starts the alternator should provide all the power needed to run whatever in the car or they are some crazy voltage paths being taken to charge and discharge a battery at the same time. Amp hours simply refer to how long a battery will supply a certain amperage for how long without a charge. I start my track car with a battery that weighs less than 4 pounds. Of course on a cooler day I need to use a jump box since the oil is thicker but once the car is running and up to temp zero issues for the rest of the day. I saw another video claiming that different things in the car were affected by the battery and its efficiencies. Would love to get an explanation of what and how as once the car is running...again the alternator is doing the work.
Exactly my concern, I’m looking to swap out the battery on my f22 and I could care less if the car can run alternator-free for 5 hours, I just want a lightweight battery that starts the car (maybe not an extremely small one since I’m daily driving it) but not a massive one.

Might wanna check your info bud. Carly might advertise that they "register" the batteries but loads of people have gone into ISTA afterward to find out that it isn't actually registered at all.
I just confirmed with ProTool, the most recent battery registration was 87,900 km (~54,600 miles) which was the exact mileage when I recorded this. Have you tested this for yourself?
I find it interesting and annoying that the car adjusts the charging to the battery as it ages but it won’t self adjust when you install a new one. I guess new cars aren’t as smart as they make them out to be…
My theory is they make it more difficult on purpose so people will think they have to go to the dealership for everything. They don’t want you to DIY anything anymore, even something as simple as a battery.
So if you don't have Carly adapter and app , no other way to register the new battery with native built-in options//menu? Are you able to use any of the Bimmerlink or Bimmercode compatible adapters to do this as well? And if so, do you have to pay for the subscription of that app to be able to do this? I myself am a new first time F30 owner and just wondering if this is what the thousands of other BMW owners have to do each time they change batteries. I'm also trying to determine if I should buy this OBD tool or need multiple variations to do coding for mine. Thanks for the info man, I've already learned quite a bit from all your videos..
Hey there is no way to do it through the car’s native menus. Aside from the dealership, any shop that works on European cars will have the capability to do the battery registration, even if you decide to install it yourself. Carly is an annual subscription while Bimmerlink is a one time purchase. Both apps have other diagnostic tools as well. All BMW’s from around 2006 onward need to have the battery registered.
SOOOOO - I went to Advanced Auto Parts to get a Battery, they told me that their "tool to program the electronics" didn't work and nobody would send them a new one and without that the car would stay in "safe mode" and not go over 30 mph. I said well it doesn't do me any good to buy a battery here and even put it in myself if that is the issue. I took it to the BMW place and they told me it would be $500 dollars for a battery. After many choice words from me, he said "it includes reprogramming all the electronics and you HAVE TO DO THAT." not knowing any better I finally agreed as I had to get a new battery. Now I am pissed that they lied (they just registered the battery" and I could have done that myself with that little tool thing! Last BMW I will own!!! Stay away from BMW in Brentwood TN - They Lie!
I supposed it depends on what country - I just called BMW for battery price and it was $560AUD. Comparative Century battery on special at an auto store for $360AUD. I'll take the risk that it is not OEM.

My 2015 X5 just quietly died today in my garage. It has two batteries in the back. I watched your video and it’s helpful. In my case, should I replace both batteries? I searched and only saw people replacing the bigger ones. Thanks for any advices.
Very helpful video Justin. Thanks for the effort. Sometimes the vent plug (that you mention below) is attached to one of the plastic terminal covers found on the new battery.
I own a CTEK 7002 US, 7-amp, charger that I have owned for about 10 years. I use it on just about all of my vehicles. Sooo, the question becomes that someone said you should use a minimum 10-amp charger. Your thoughts? OBTW, I really appreciate your instructive videos!
How has your experience with Carly gone? I am hearing mixed reviews about their battery registering process. I just want to properly register my battery that’s all. Are they 100% a safe source to use for this?
Won't work all the time , I had 3 mechanics try to program the battery and all failed using Maxis scanners , I had to use Topdon phoenix Max to get it to work
My pcv diaphragm went ( has a tear in it ) so white smoke everywhere. Waiting for diaphragm from Ross racing so car is not running for days. Hooked up my black and decker battery charger to red terminal and negative ground under hood and pressed charge. Charged it for about 45 minutes or so. My 340i is a 16 btw….so I will need a battery like you. Assuming the 16 battery is same as 17? I hope you can charge our batteries from under hood terminals! Idk….but I did it. Anyhow how much is that Carly piece you plug into obd?
Hi again, just a note I have talked to a couple mechanics, and they have indicated that its not necessary to register. How can we get the truth on this subject? the thing is that the IBS should track the voltage of any installed battery if it truly is intelligent and no need to tell the IBS or ECU that a new battery has been installed. and how would telling the IBS make it charge differently? some batteries last 4 years and some last over 10 years.
Hi, I had removed my battery and then had a recharged only for the car to basically discharge it. So I had it recharged again and I saw your video about the Carly app, so I’m gonna go ahead and purchase that, but what should I put on the setting because it’s not a brand new battery even though it was recharged. It’s supposed to be 900 cca but after the recharge it’s 521 cca , I wonder if it’ll go back to 900 once I run the car for 30 minutes after doing the procedure from 6:09 . The car had been standing still for a while and I had to remove the battery because I was fixing something.
I like to ad to this if you buying trickle charger and you have AGM battery you must use AGM capable trickle charger. You cannot use regular charger on AGM battery’s

Did you lose all your settings?
I supposed it depends on what country - I just called BMW for battery price and it was $560AUD. Comparative Century battery on special at an auto store for $360AUD. I'll take the risk that it is not OEM.
Just kick once to open your boot
I love your channel and nice contents. I thought you can help me to reset the oil and brake pads lights. I have a BMW 530i, 2021.
Thanks,
J Cesar de Laurentiis
BMW charged me $500 for my battery. I want to look elsewhere for a new one.
I have a problem with my car's alternator
It does not charge strongly, and I replaced it 4 times, but with the same problem
All wires are intact
Also, there is no IBS system on the battery end٠
can you help me؟

Why are the wera tools so satisfying lol 🔥
Why are they so expensive 🥵
It’s a 12v power supply. You think it really needs to be that technical? My F30
N20 doesn’t have an a German fetish.
🙋♂️ If you can change the amp hours when you register it to the car.
Why not just buy one from the auto parts store?
Then pay for the app to change it.🤷🏻♂️
Dealerships screw you over everytime.
Sometimes the vent plug (that you mention below) is attached to one of the plastic terminal covers found on the new battery.
will the iCarly battery registration work on my e90 2011 bmw328i? as well give me all the coding features iCarly gives?
I didn’t know you need to register your battery
Yeah BMW started that around 2006
@@justinbuice never knew that thanks for educating me on that
I own a CTEK 7002 US, 7-amp, charger that I have owned for about 10 years.
Won't work all the time , I had 3 mechanics try to program the battery and all failed using Maxis scanners , I had to use Topdon phoenix Max to get it to work
Autel ap200 obd scanner for 60gbp works well with BMW. You can register new battery and do other stuff. Unlimited license for one car brand.
I’ll be replacing mine with an Antigravity group 94 weighing 20lbs.
Super good job on this video! It's chill, informative, and super good production quality. Also helped me out a ton, so thanks!
So.....why should not replace battery before watching this?
Dealership quoted me nearly $700 to replace and code new battery. I'm having issues with the old battery and didn't recode it when I disconnected it
Hi again, just a note I have talked to a couple mechanics, and they have indicated that its not necessary to register.
Dealer asks for $295 for the labor only, plus $400+ batter itself, haha, go to the dealership for a battery?
@Justinbuice Hi i got a question I'm programming my new battery & I'm using a Autel 906bt but it's asking for the matrix code which it has the barcode how can I get those numbers
Glad you didn’t go to Bloomfield. When Penske bought it they fired about everyone. When Fox bought Farmington they kept everyone.
Regarding the CTEK, i see there are different models, mxs 5, 7, 10. Is there any danger to go for the more powerful charger or does the charger know to not overcharge the battery?
6mm bolts with 10mm heads
Just saying cause if you actually measure the "screws" they are 6mm. It's like when you tell your girl you got 6" when you have 4¾
In Justin's drop down under Tools required:...."Super human strength" hahaha. Yup
Of more INTEREST, what actually determines that it needs replacement? looking to learn
Hey guys I have a question.
Does newer M4’s battery die?
Have you heard of it?
Just had to buy a battery for my 2014 F30. The battery used in this video is the correct one if it helps someone. Currently on sale for 335$ + 18$ + tax in Ottawa, Canada.
Hey Justin for future reference Costco carries the battery for our car so if you have one local I put a H8 agm 900cca in mine and it paired up perfect! Matched up exactly to the factory battery!
I have a 2007 750i and my battery is just now starting to die. It's a stock one too. Count me as surprised.😛 I just don't know if I want to pay dealer prices.
Nice video. My wife's 2014 BMW is still on the original battery.
Literally none of the BMW battery replacements talk about the little black vent tube and the white plug you mentioned lol. And it’s already too late as I’ve got rid of my battery and the white plug
HAHA, If you lived in the AZ desert your battery would be dying after 3 years, not actually dead but on the way.
Hi Justin, That was a great video. I am told that the batteries on most BMW’s sold in India have a 15 volt battery and car’s software is lost w hen you remove the battery. This would mean that the software needs to be re-installed. Would you have a video on the latter?
Good video. I just had to figure out the battery access panel puzzle pieces today on our New to me E93. Very helpful for when I have to actually pull the battery...
If you replace the battery with the BMW exact battery and specs. You do not have to register the battery. At list i didn't have to.
hey have you hear of a weak battery causing chassis malfunction and pedestrian warning malfunction?
