Well, in this case, I have to disagree with you. Those "long, drawn-out ballet scenes" are my favourite part of the movie. Tchaikovsky's music and the ballet dancing is simply absolutely magical. Guess now I know which movie I want to watch for Christmas. Thank you for bringing it back to my attention. Looking forward to more deep movie dives from you.
Yeah, the Barbie movies were part of what got me into ballet in the first place, and that's stuck with me all my life (and Tchaikovsky's still my favourite composer, of course!). They could so easily have just been like 'eh, it's a direct-to-video movie, let's just do what we need to do to sell dolls and call it a day', so it's really nice that they put that bit of extra effort into making it educational!
This Barbie movie in particular is a Christmas tradition every year since I was born (2001 babyyy), and is a must all year around. I genuinely believed as a kid that Barbie created these stories, and other companies had to get the rights to make movies lol. The ballet sequences were never boring to me - in fact, I would try to copy them even to this day.
This was my first ever movie I owned, I remember picking hundreds of dandelions and only ever wishing for a copy the barbie in the nutcracker movie. That year my parents got me the vhs and my godfather bought me the whole set of nutcracker Barbie dolls as a gift, I will never forget the joy that movie brought me and still brings me to this day. I lost all my dolls long ago but I dream of one day getting a new set.
I completely forgot how ham they went on the Barbie Nutcracker doll set. I remember getting the whole set for Christmas and I wish i still had all of it. 🤣 Wouldn't mind if *cough cough* Mattel did a re-release one day.
Oh, I'm crying. I adore the ballet "The Nutcracker", I've seen it in the theater and started cry from first sounds of music. It is fantastic and magic composition. And "Barbie and the Nutcracker" is only one cartoon movie I saw. Yes! I've never seen another cartoons woth barbie. And "The Nutcracker", in my childhood I saw it just... every evening during several months. And I knew all replicas from cartoon by heart ❤.
Barbie in the Nutcracker doll was my most favorite Barbie doll of my childhood. I was in ballet as kid and danced in a yearly nutcracker ballet performance around Christmas, so it made the doll and movie even more special to me.
9:42 Annaliese and Erika : *Hold our Cats* Btw, Clara was also one of my favorite Barbie movie heroine. When I was a child, me and my friends were all shocked with surprise when Clara was revealed to be the Sugarplum Princess, and the fact that she saved the Magical land even though she had no powers to fight was so epic message to everyone. And that dress....! Just timeless fashion.
To this film's credit, I think it's one of the best children's film versions of this story/ballet. I love how it blends the ballet and the story together. Don't even get me started about that 'Nutcracker and the Four Seasons' or whatever its called that Disney did. That film makes me so angry on so many levels! Will watch the Barbie version over that any day!
I wish they would re-release or make original production of the old barbie movie dolls that would be so cool and honestly it would make Mattel more money for people who grew up with these movies
I love to tell people about this fact when addressing this movie but the lady who plays Barbie also plays a mainstay character in a beloved anime, Sango from Inuyasha and funnily enough in the Nutcracker the prince himself is played by her love interest in that show! Also I had a Nutcracker Prince doll and his head wasn’t fabric it was hard plastic, still removable.
you can see the impact that the early 2000's Barbie movies had when there're RUclips channels like Aaron and Jo enjoying and embracing the Barbie Cinematic Universe!!
the uncle being an cool outthere auntie is SO NICE and feminist and on point to the barbie empowerment! also i guess that her being exactly like barbie (or clara) is a metaphor for her being clara's role model for finding her strengh and drive for adventure as her auntie did travelly the world ughh i love it
I know the animation is weird and choppy but it's so of its time that I love it for that, it improved by swan lake but I still love that simplistic vibe
True story: due to this movie and the swan lake movie I almost ended up in a ballet school 😅 (the thing that stopped me was some p*do scandal in that school soon after I got an invitation 🙊🙈) Besides I love Tchaikovsky's music, especially the Nutcracker and for me the Barbie in the Nutcracker along with the ballet music itself is a must during every year's Christmas season 💜🩰🎄
I get that you think something 200 years old is really old, but as fairy tales go, this is a youngling. Other fairy tales are much older. Even if you use the Grimm's stories (from 1812) they are based on even older stories.
The year this move came out my mom bought all pink glass ornaments for our trees and bought me the whole collection wrapped in pink paper under the tree I still remember every detail
So I liked Barbie but my little sister was obsessed with this movie. This movie and Barbie in Swan Lake. She had all the Kelley’s dolls and friends for Christmas, she dresses up as Barbie after this movie came out. She had this movie on repeat. She was so upset because they didn’t have the Ken doll for the movie.
If they were considering sleeping beauty, i wonder if they decided against it because they realized there would literally be nothing for barbie to do lol! I think its good they went with the nutcracker because it really made barbie the main character and actually part of the plot which I don't think could be said for sleeping beauty. This was such a great video! I loved that you provided some actual history and context for the franchise instead of just talking about the surface level elements, I feel like a lot of videos about nostalgic movies do that.
From my understanding, even though they wanted to do Sleeping Beauty to do all 3 Tchaikovsky ballets, Disney wouldn't let them do it. Mattel was making toys for Disney at the time, and since Disney already had a Sleeping Beauty character with blond hair and a pink dress, they worried that the Barbie merchandise would be too similar and didn't want it competing with their own Sleeping Beauty. So they stopped Mattel from doing the movie
I liked all the background you gave, I've always been curious about that Sleeping Beauty animation. I like the film, the animation isn't "technically" good but it has a lovely aesthetic, the colours and designs carry it for me. I love how it kind of introduced a generation of children to some really lovely classic art and culture with the ballet choreography and Tchaikovsky score. Totally agree about the cool aunt, she is what I aspire to be. I think the writing is kind of ehh, when we get to Princess and the Pauper I think the writing is a little more sophisticated and entertaining to older viewers so it holds up a little better, but Nutcracker is charming and earnest and I'll probably rewatch it this Christmas. Can't wait til you get to Princess and the Pauper! Martin Short carries that movie as Preminger.
I think it is a great idea to cover the Barbie movies! My daughter collected them all when she was little. My favorite movie was Barbie- A Perfect Christmas
Watching this tribute to the Barbie In The Nutcracker movie was so nostalgic for me. I was not allowed to have dolls growing up, but my parents allowed me to watch the movies. I watched this movie over and over again. It made me fall in love with classical music as well as ballet (specifically Tchaikovsky ballets). I couldn't wait for the Nutcracker to perform in my hometown at Christmas time. I look back on that time in my life, and I realize I have so many heartwarming memories associated with this movie. I knew of Barbie before this movie, but Barbie as Clara/The Sugar Plum Princess made me fall in love with her. And the dolls themselves? We were so spoiled back then compared to the quality of barbie dolls today. I currently have some modern and vintage barbie dolls, and it almost feels like I am preserving an unofficial legacy that is Barbie. She is truly an icon and household name in our society, and I appreciate channels like this which contribute to that legacy. Fun fact: The voice actors for Clara and Eric are also the voice actors for the lovers Sango and Miroku in the anime Inuyasha. Kirby Morrow, the male voice actor, sadly passed away in 2020. 🙏💙 Both he and Kelly Sheridan shaped my childhood in the Barbie world and in the Inuyasha anime later on. Awesome video as always, Joey! 💖
Strange- i remember seeing ads for the Sleeping Beauty Barbie doll but for some reason when I saw the adds it was a tie-in to do with the anniversary of the Disney's Sleeping Beauty and not an early attempt at a Barbie movie
I had that Barbie, I wish I never sold it at a yard sale (2 decades ago) 😭 Clara’s hair is so beautiful! That woman who acted as her at that Holiday parade That stand came with Barbie only not Ken that I’m aware of
Im so glad you made this video, aside from the debate about bad animations or promotions and stuff, Barbie's first decade defines my childhood and Im sooo happy that they made these movies, so sad how the barbie franchise has downgraded in terms of movies and toys! but none the less im grateful that im a 90s child
I love the 1st era of Barbie movies. I had Genevieve, Elina, and Rapunzel. Always wanted the Barbie diaries doll, princess and the pauper, and I wishhhh I had Barbie in the nutcracker even now. She’s so beautiful!
The nutcracker film I grew up with was done with dolls using some sort of stop motion. I found it on RUclips 'The nutcracker and the mouse king', and it still has a magical quality. Definitely worth a look
"There can only be one female lead in a Barbie movie" (My mind goes straight to "Barbie and the Diamond Castle"). And apparently, like the Luxo ball appears in every Pixar film, the Nutcracker makes an Easter egg appearance in every animated Barbie movie of the 2000s. Some examples are in "Magic of Pegasus," hidden among the ice skaters at the ice skating party Annika attends, there is a human-sized Nutcracker, and in "The Diamond Castle," when Melody has a flashback of her origins and how she became stuck inside the mirror, the old lady who Liana and Alexa give bread to has a Nutcracker like the one Clara had. ruclips.net/video/hwm-cXb06dM/видео.html
Darlin' I distinctly remember getting this movie and doll as a combo set (VHS) for my 4th birthday in '01. I may not remember most of that year or even much of that birthday, but I definitely remember this one. Hell, every year on my birthday and x-mas eve I watch this particular movie.
23:17 This was such an interesting video! I loved learning about the actual ballet and the differences between the two. I used to love playing with my Clara barbie doll! I had the light pink dress doll from the end of your video. I loved playing with the stuffed Marzipan pony.
Nice deep dive! The dolls were close to the collector line of Nutcracker dolls being produced at the time. The film does have its charm. While I'd like to own these dolls, I don't know if it will happen. It was nice to see the subsequent sets of Nutcracker dolls. This last offering though, what happened? Nothing about it said 20th Anniversary.
Although it wasn’t branded as a “20th Anniversary” set, was a small Nutcracker line made in 2021, and there was a LOT of backlash due to lack of quality/outfits not being movie accurate. Maybe for the 25th anniversary Mattel Creations will give us a doll with a made-to-move body and Swarovski Crystals on the bodice!
That would look so nice! Swarovski crystals with copious amounts of glitter! (Former dancer showing. 🙂) It'd be great to see how pointe shoes would look with the ankle joint.
Sometimes I hate CGI animated movies (especially the ones from Disney - not Pixar because they are great for that - from Disney because Disney was better with the 2D animation) but for Barbie it worked perfectly because the CGI really make Barbie looking like her dolls ! (well in fact the dolls are always more yassified but you know...)
I had the movie and the Clara doll with the little Nutcracker but I apparently must have given her away but kept her necklace which is on my Rapunzel doll instead. I have the 2 little fairy dolls but that's it sadly.
23:50 these dolls actually also belong to a Barbie in the pink shoes special which I can only find in German on the entire internet so I’m that’s interesting…
Yay I grew up with these movies especially Swan Lake and I had my Swan Lake doll so I'm glad that you are deep dive with these movies they are very fun and the some of the dolls that go with it are very gorgeous.
By the way, this is the only of the Barbie movie's I've seen and I saw it bc a friend wanted to. I wasn't personally into that barbie easthetic anymore at that time, but I ended up respecting the movie for what it was. I love that they made a movie appreciating the classical/ballet aspect on its own terms, didn't try to downplay that or the "girliness" to appeal to a larger audience, and they took their super sparkly soft pink stereotype of a female lead seriously as a heroine with wisdom and strength. Even though the animation was quite plastic-balloony at times, the dancing was animated with such care (I should've realised it was mocapped!) and I just really respect when a movie takes the art it's about so seriously, and especially that it didn't just assume the kids would be too stupid to notice or care. I'd love to see you do videos on other Barbie movies!
FAO Schwarts was the best store in the world for anything Barbie! I remember the one inside the Forum Shops in Las Vegas, where the second floor was dedicated to Barbie and the windows had life-seize Barbie statues wearing togas (Roman style) all over the place. But then again, Vegas always does everything over the top. :)
I started to watch the Barbie movies as an adult, after finding out that the makers of my favorite show, Reboot, were animating the Barbie movies. Reboot, ended on a cliffhanger, and by watching the a Barbie movies I was able to watch the show I missed in an alternate way. 😅
I feel like Barbie's voice acting change is in line with the Disney heroines going from being poised and dignified to varying degrees (depending on the characters) to being more the quirky types over the decades. There's definitely a place for female characters being silly and clumsy etc. instead of just being the classic elegant perfect princesses they've been for centuries, but I do think it's a shame we see so little of that maturity and gravitas now.
I have a 2001 Clara doll, she’s so pretty but her eyes are green (yours looks like she has blue eyes ?). I found her at a yard sale though so she was naked and I’m having trouble finding her complete outfit for a decent price. I had that Sleeping Beauty doll, I still remember the music the cushion made.
I have trouble enjoying the film now that Kirby Morrow is dead. I miss him so much. Kelly Sheridan memorialized him on her Instagram that he was her nutcracker prince 😭😭💔💔
He was more than her Nutcracker Prince too, I’m not sure if you run in anime circles but they have been each other love interests in an anime too and not just side characters either, part of the main group. His passing hurt more because I spent more time with his voice and character
@@indubitablysoyall I was always so fond of his voice, despite what he said in the show to women he always sounded nurturing and warm. He will be missed
Oh my gosh so Drossalmeyer was nutcracker not Swan Lake! My mind is blown… Mind you I had no idea that Drossel Meyer was real to begin with. I just thought he was a character in princess tutu based off of Swan Lake but no, I guess it’s actually based off of the nutcracker very loosely or maybe they just borrowed that name from the nutcracker because I’ve always heard that it was based Off of Swan Lake - the anime, princess tutu. Sorry I’m rambling. Anyway, so Drossel Meyer was an actual character from one of the ballets gotcha❤
I love Barbie in the Nutcracker movie, including the Dolls! Also, I still really wanted to know what happened to Sleepy Beauty and if they or not still have a full version of a full movie ( I would love to see it when it's released soon ), hope it's not a lost media. Thank you for reviewing it, keep it up. 😊🌈💖👏👍
Wow, you send me right back to my childhood with this video! This Barbie used to be my favorite because of all the articulations she had. I also had the prince and the horse and the carriage (sorry, I don't remember the correct word for this in English). It was certainly one of my last Barbie I kept when I grew up. I used her in an art project and after that gave her to my best friend who liked the doll. I almost regret it now lol. It's maybe one of the toy I played the most with. Really good memories. For the movie I watched so many times, this one and Rapunzel where my favorite. If you watch it now, of course the graphic quality may seems not good. But when I was a child it was enough to bring me to this colorful world, and the story was just so great. One of my favorite moment is when the winter fairies come and dance. Also the last dance between Eric and Clara, yes I love those long dance moment. Also thanks to you I remembered I possessed the Sleeping Beauty Barbie and her Prince. Such nice memories I had playing with them. Thank you to allow me to remember all this good moments I have forgotten.
Now I've got to see if I've still got my old Nutcracker DVD. The 2021version is deeply upsetting, but maybe that's how all the new animated stuff is? Either way, thank you for reminding me of this and Happy Holidays!
Really cool idea, I'd love to see more! I didn't know it was motion capture and that Mattel released so many dolls for it. Also, the theory about the live action movie is super interesting. I liked the movie, but tbh it was never one of my favorites. I think the animation looks better than in some of the following films though, because it has like this filter (?) that makes everything look softer.
This was my first Barbie movie. I still have the tape. I remember during the summer holidays on Cartoon Network, it would often advertise and play this movie for girls and advertise some cartoon scarecrow movie for boys.
I remember when this came out!!! I was so excited since the late 90s Barbie would advertise their dolls using 3D animation. When I saw the Jewel Hair Mermaid Barbie had a 3D animation in her commercial, I was always a wish of mine for Barbie to have a full length 3D Barbie movie then this came out! I was soooo excited!!!! 💗💗💗💗💗
Hi I TOTALLY agree Barbie is the best movies and great dolls, My VERY FIRST doll back in 2004, I was born in 2003 in USA NEW YORK. I have watched all Barbie movies from the very first.
hi Joey I am watching on TV RUclips your channel Barbie Life In The Dreamhouse Is Iconic I love it I just washed all my 70's 80's 90's Barbies dolls and Horse Nibbles in the bathtub in warm soapy water and scrubbed them with a sponge and rinsed them off with clean water and drying out them on a clean dry towels
I used to have the entire toy set. I had the SugarLlum Princess Barbie, the Nutcracker Prince and the hand mirror they danced together on. I also had the entire line to the Swan Princess that contained Barbie, the Prince, and all the woodland creature Kelly Dolls with the swan carriage. I also had Barbie Rapunzel. I dont fuqing know why I got rid of all my toys. I shoukd have kept them as modern toy quality has drastically declined. And it would have been nice for my future children to play with the same toys i played with as a kid. EDIT: I used to have the Sleeping Beauty PC video game, and i played it almost daily.
Still better than the rest of the crappy nutcracker movies (that also includes the crappy Disney 2018 Nutcracker). This is the Better nutcracker movie ever made from Barbie (that includes Tom and Jerry X Nutcracker movie that one was also decent too)
YOU SHOULD DO BARBIE AND SWAN LAKE NEXT !!! I just got the original castle and I am waiting for Christmas to open it! There was lots of dolls and promotion for it !!
This wasn't my favourite of the Barbie movies, maybe a rewatch is due. But the original doll is so pretty and would really like to own her someday. Great video though.
Well, in this case, I have to disagree with you. Those "long, drawn-out ballet scenes" are my favourite part of the movie. Tchaikovsky's music and the ballet dancing is simply absolutely magical.

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is set to Tchaikovsky’s score, so maybe some legal reason with that was why Barbie didn’t do one based on the ballet.
This was my first ever movie I owned, I remember picking hundreds of dandelions and only ever wishing for a copy the barbie in the nutcracker movie. I totally agree! Love the hands. So elegant
Kelly Sheridan is Barbie
Also the skirt thing is chiffon probably.

Wait what, the uk English national ballet is literally next to my house😂 I can hear them rehearsing the nutcracker all the time

I had the whole line from this movie and swan lake. Marzipan was my absolute favorite 💕
A new video is just what we need
I have all the movies from the first Era of films. The stories and dolls were beautiful then the quality went downhill
OMG YAS JOEYYYY, MAKE A DEEP DIVE IN PRINCESS N THE PAUPER
I adored the dolls and the movie, I nearly ruined my VHS from how often I watched it.
23:50 these dolls actually also belong to a Barbie in the pink shoes special which I can only find in German on the entire internet so I’m that’s interesting…
I used to watch this movie on repeat in Spanish so it’s kind of crazy learning & hearing the voice actors in English!
I am so happy you mentioned Mainframe entertainment. They were truly CGI pioneer.
I actually love Barbie in The Nutcracker. It holds a special place in my heart because my grandpa (RIP 😔) got it for me for Christmas one year.
You probably already have this lined up. But I just became obsessed with Bride Barbies. So, maybe a video on the history of Barbie as a bride!
The ballet scenes are the best!
@@Theravingranter absolutely especially sango and miroku
Anyway, so Drossel Meyer was an actual character from one of the ballets gotcha❤
i noticed the shoe mistake as a kid in the barbie movie lol
the barbie and the rockers series was released as a feature film in brazil. i still have the vinyl record with the soundtrack.
Going to see the Nutcracker live this month inshallah, this video made me extra excited to go now! thank you
This was my first Barbie movie.
Hi I TOTALLY agree Barbie is the best movies and great dolls,
My VERY FIRST doll back in 2004,
I was born in 2003 in USA NEW YORK.
I have watched all Barbie movies from the very first.
I had the Sugarplum Princess Barbie as a kid! It was my favorite doll of all time! I played with her so much that her head fell off 😅
The polar express uses the same process.
hi Joey I am watching on TV RUclips your channel Barbie Life In The Dreamhouse Is Iconic I love it I just washed all my 70's 80's 90's Barbies dolls and Horse Nibbles in the bathtub in warm soapy water and scrubbed them with a sponge and rinsed them off with clean water and drying out them on a clean dry towels
I let them soak I took your washing advice from your video you showed
The impact this movie had on me-
Love your attention to detail, your sass, and of course your dedication to dolls! Great video as always.
I only have the Happy Meal versions of Nutcracker Barbie and Ken.
You just jogged my memory that I owned a sleeping beauty Barbie and I LOVED her to pieces
Such a nostalgic film😢
This wasn't my favourite of the Barbie movies, maybe a rewatch is due. But the original doll is so pretty and would really like to own her someday. Great video though.
I love these videos you keep making, thank you❤
I don't collect barbie but I love barbie I slay her ❤
A wonderful video! I can't wait for you to talk about Barbie Mariposa 🦋✨
Need barbie movies deep dive
I had this movie, and I watched it so many times my mom complained my brother was getting annoyed. But joke was on her he loved the movie too!
21:45 I think you can remove it so it can look like the nightgown
